Local love begins with noticing. It is the decision to look closer at the people, places, and passions that make our community feel like home, and to recognize that when talent and heart come together, something lasting is built. This issue is rooted in gratitude for the gifts God has placed within our community and for those who steward them with intention, creativity, and care. Broomfield is rich with people who show up faith fully, often quietly, shaping a future grounded in growth.

Our cover invites us to slow down and witness creation through the eyes of Tim Seibert of Tim Seibert Photography. His devotion to light and landscape reveals beauty most of us never see, reminding us that wonder is always present when we take the time to look.

That same sense of care appears in the joy of a child opening a book for the first time. Through the Dolly Parton Imagination Library, locally led by the Broomfield Rotary, families are building rhythms of reading, connection, and growth. These early moments, rooted in love and learning, are shaping the future of our community one story at a time.

Intentional investment is also at the heart of Bal Swan Children’s Center as they step into building a new school designed to serve more children with greater purpose. For more than sixty years, Bal Swan has placed children at the center of everything they do. This next chapter reflects a belief that thoughtfully designed spaces can nurture confidence, growth, and possibility for generations to come.

We close with a Valentine’s mocktail crafted by Chris Rice, owner of Cool as a Cucumber, a local business dedicated to redefining alcohol-free beverages with creativity and intention. It is a reminder that celebration can be meaningful, balanced, and beautifully made.

As you turn these pages, you will encounter stories and local businesses rooted in integrity, craftsmanship, and care. Each one represents people who have faithfully planted seeds in our community. By choosing local first, we tend these roots together—supporting families, strengthening bonds, and helping the community flourish with promise and hope.

With gratitude,

February 2026

That Finally Puts

Opening Doors To Imagination

How free monthly books help Broomfield children grow language skills, confidence, and connection.

A young boy reaches for the mailbox door, excitedly pulling it open. His eyes widen as he spots a book inside. “Mommy, look! A new book! It has whales on it!” he exclaims, waving it in the air as he races back into the house to show his family.

Scenes like this are made possible by the Dolly Parton Imagination Library, locally led by the Broomfield Rotary. The program delivers one free, age-appropriate book to children from birth to age five each month. If a child is registered at birth, they will have their own library of 60 books by the time they turn five.

Broomfield Rotary leader Dennis Kennedy and his wife Linda are deeply committed to education and early literacy. As former educators, they have a deep passion for this program. “Over 80 percent of brain development happens before age five, Dennis explained. “If we don’t engage kids during that window, it can affect their future learning. This program helps children.”

Reading is a powerful activity that parents or caregivers can do with children. Hearing a parent’s voice, learning how to hold a book and turn pages, and exploring the pictures can spark a lifelong love of reading while strengthening family bonds. These early experiences help build language skills, confidence and school readiness.

“Reading with young children is an investment in our community’s future,” Linda shared. “We’re helping develop high school graduates and good citizens, one book at a time.”

A common misconception is that the program is funded entirely by the Dolly Parton Foundation or intended only for lower-income families. In reality, the books are free for every child, regardless of income. In Broomfield, the program is funded through a partnership between the State of Colorado and the Broomfield Rotary, while the Dolly Parton Foundation selects and mails the books each month.

One exciting aspect of the program is that all books are now available in a bilingual English-Spanish option. In addition, each book includes simple reading tips on the inside cover, offering parents easy ways to engage with their child during story time.

Enrolling is as simple as registering online at imaginationlibrary.com from birth.

The program’s impact is deeply personal. Dennis recalls how a little girl began crying when she learned that she had “aged out” of the program. She was reluctant to say goodbye to something that had become part of their family routine. “That reaction tells us everything,” he says.

The Bal Swan Blueprint

Every great build begins with a blueprint. Not the kind rolled up under an arm or smudged with graphite, but the kind that lives in imagination first, a belief that something better is possible and worth designing with intention. At Bal Swan Children’s Center, the blueprint has never been about walls or windows. It has always been about children.

For more than sixty years , Bal Swan has followed a plan rooted in child-centered well-being. Their blueprint maps out how young learners come to understand themselves, connect with others, and grow in confidence. Like any thoughtfully designed plan, it balances structure with flexibility, leaving room for inspiration and curiosity to flourish.

No blueprint comes to life without the right team. In construction, a general contractor orchestrates specialists, electricians, plumbers, painters, each indispensable in bringing a vision to life. At Bal Swan, that same orchestration exists among administrators, teachers, and therapists, professionals whose combined expertise builds something far more meaningful than walls. And like any ambitious project, it requires the belief and support of a community invested in what truly matters.

Today, that collective belief is being called upon for a capital campaign to build a new campus designed to serve more children with greater intention.

This shared vision takes center stage at Blueprints of Brilliance, the Bal Swan Ball, on March 7 at the Omni Interlocken. The evening is less about celebration and more of an invitation to see how intentional planning shapes a space where children thrive, how this next phase of building will make that vision feasible and to imagine what’s possible when a community builds together.

Blueprints, however, are only the beginning. What matters most is how a space feels once it is lived in, how it supports growth, builds confidence, and allows each child to be fully seen. At Bal Swan, the results of intentional design are not counted in bricks and beams, but in the way children come to understand themselves and their place in the world. Those outcomes ripple outward as children grow, learn, and inspire a Broomfield that is better because they were here, grounded in the simple truths they carry with them every day.

I AM CONNECTED:

A Bal Swan experience builds a child’s connection with themselves and with others. A child’s ability to identify their feelings, interests and strengths builds confidence in making friends and being part of a group, which is essential for social creatures like us.

I AM WELL-KNOWN:

Young children especially benefit from being accepted and appreciated by their friends, family, and adults. Having their unique attributes and talents recognized by others builds their self-confidence and helps them reach their full potential. It’s been said that the sweetest sound is hearing someone else say your name.

I AM CAPABLE:

At Bal Swan, all children learn that they have potential and are endowed with natural talents and attributes. Imagine how empowering that is. Visual, auditory, and kinesthetic teaching methods create an environment in which each child has the best opportunity to succeed.

I AM CREATIVE:

If a child is encouraged to try new ways of doing things or making things, their creativity is sparked and rewarded. At Bal Swan, they learn the value of the process, not just the product, and that true innovation comes from both trial and error, and taking risks. Success builds confidence.

I HAVE VALUE:

When children are publicly and privately supported and celebrated for who they are, they learn that they don’t need to fit a certain mold to be valued or be important. The Bal Swan experience lets them know that they matter very much.

I CHERISH MY FRIENDS:

Bal Swan’s classrooms are fully inclusive, meaning that children of all abilities learn together in a strength-based environment. When children are not categorized by ability, they learn to value all their friends. The emphasis on social-emotional learning also helps children navigate social relationships and see each other as friends. They learn the value of both having and being a friend.

A VALENTINE’S DAY MOCKTAIL BY COOL AS A CUCUMBER

BLUSHING PETALS

This Valentine’s Day mocktail is a study in balance, creativity, and intention. Crafted by Chris Rice, owner of Cool as a Cucumber in Broomfield, this alcohol-free creation reflects his signature approach. Thoughtful, experimental, and rooted in fresh ingredients. Often described as a beverage scientist, Chris designs mocktails that feel layered and indulgent, proving that flavor and experience never require alcohol.

VALENTINE’S DAY MOCKTAIL

Blushing Petals captures romance through contrast. Bright blood orange juice brings depth and color, while rose petal tea softens the profile with delicate floral notes. A house-made vanilla and orange peel syrup adds warmth and complexity, finished with a sparkling lift that keeps each sip light and refined. The final touch, fresh mint and a dusting of fennel pollen, offers an unexpected Colorado-inspired finish that lingers beautifully.

Elegant yet playful, this mocktail is perfect for celebrating love, friendship, or a quiet moment worth savoring.

Ingredients

Mocktail

• 1.5 oz fresh blood orange juice

• 1 oz rose petal tea

• 0.75 oz vanilla and orange peel syrup

• 2 oz seltzer water

Garnish

• Fresh mint

• Fennel pollen

Instructions

Prepare the rose petal tea by steeping rose petals in hot water for five minutes. Strain and allow to cool.

To make the vanilla and orange peel syrup, combine the zest of three oranges and one teaspoon of vanilla with one liter of simple syrup made from equal parts cane sugar and water. Let it sit overnight, then strain.

Add blood orange juice, rose petal tea, and vanilla and orange peel syrup to a shaker filled with ice. Shake until chilled. Double strain over a large ice cube in a rocks glass. Top with seltzer water.

Garnish with two mint leaves and a light dusting of fennel pollen before serving.

Date Night

AT HOME

THREE CREATIVE IDEAS TO CELEBRATE LOVE

Not every date night needs to involve reservations or an elaborate itinerary. With a little creativity, you can create magical moments right at home. Whether you’re celebrating Valentine’s Day or just want to reconnect, here are three ideas for unforgettable at-home date nights.

ROMANTIC PICNIC UNDER THE STARS

Transform your backyard or balcony into a dreamy picnic spot! Spread out a cozy blanket, add a few fluffy pillows, and hang string lights or fairy lights for ambiance. A small fire pit or lanterns can also add a romantic glow.

Pack a picnic basket with finger foods and a bottle of wine or sparkling water. Don’t forget a decadent dessert like chocolate-dipped strawberries.

Lay back and stargaze, identifying constellations or making wishes on shooting stars. To make it extra romantic, bring a bluetooth speaker and play soft music.

PAINT AND CREATE TOGETHER

Unleash your inner artists with one of these three fun and interactive dates. Grab some inexpensive canvases, brushes, and acrylic paints from the craft store. Don’t forget aprons or old clothes to protect against spills!

• Paint each other’s portraits for a mix of laughter and creativity.

• Work on a collaborative paintingeach person adds their own touch to a single canvas.

• Try a themed painting challenge, like recreating your favorite memory together.      Pair this date with a cheese platter and wine and don’t worry about being “good’ at painting - it’s all about enjoying the process together.

BREAKFAST IN BED

Start the day with love by turning breakfast into an indulgent experience. Prepare a tray with a DIY breakfast charcuterie board. Include mini pancakes, waffles, fresh fruit, yogurt, granola, bacon, and pastries. Add small bowls of toppings like syrup, Nutella, or whipped cream.

Mix up mimosas or serve coffee with flavored syrups and whipped cream for a café vibe. Then, snuggle up in bed and watch a favorite movie or TV series.

VALENTINE’S DAY CHEESECAKE

ARTICLE AND PHOTOGRAPHY BY CASSIE SUPPES

Valentine’s Day is all about showing your loved one just how much you care. Rather than opting for the predictable chocolates and flowers, why not showcase your culinary prowess and create a one-of-a-kind cheesecake? Not only will this delectable treat demonstrate your affection, but it will also add a personal and luxurious touch to the holiday celebration. Make this Valentine’s Day truly memorable by going above and beyond with a heartfelt, homemade gift. Cheesecake is the perfect dessert for two because it’s both rich and indulgent, but not too heavy. Plus, it can be easily customized to fit your own personal taste and it’s much easier than you think!

TO MAKE THE PERFECT CHEESECAKE, YOU’LL NEED:

• 1 pound cream cheese, softened

• 1 cup sugar

• 3 eggs

• 1 teaspoon vanilla extract

• 1/2 cup sour cream

• 1/2 cup heavy cream

• 1 prepared graham cracker crust

Start by preheating your oven to 350 degrees. In a large bowl, mix together the cream cheese and sugar until smooth. Beat in the eggs, one at a time, then stir in the vanilla extract. Next, add in the sour cream and heavy cream and mix until everything is well combined. Pour the mixture into the prepared graham cracker crust and bake for 45 minutes to 1 hour, or until the cheesecake is set. Let cool completely before serving.   For this recipe, we decided to add berries and honey to the top of our cheesecake. Take the time to make yours special to your relationship. With toppings such as chocolate, jelly, whipped cream, berries, fruit, or whatever your partner’s favorite is, you’re sure to make them smile. Make things colorful by adding food coloring to the mix, it can even be made in their favorite color. You can also change things up by making your own crust with Oreos or cinnamon crackers.

To elevate this recipe to the next level, consider using high-quality ingredients such as grass-fed cream cheese and locally sourced honey. For added luxury, try using a blend of different types of berries, or even substituting the graham cracker crust with a crust made of crushed pistachios or hazelnuts.

In addition to adding a variety of toppings, you can also get creative with the presentation. For example, try using a springform pan to create a heart-shaped cheesecake, or using cookie cutters to create fun shapes out of the cheesecake slices. You can also garnish the cheesecake with edible flowers or a sprinkle of edible gold dust for a truly indulgent experience.
