When most people hear the word investment, they immediately think of money. Stocks. Retirement accounts. Market returns. But some of the most meaningful investments we make in life have nothing to do with our bank accounts.
They show up in where we spend our time, who we pour into, and the communities we choose to build.

Our cover story with Tim Tebow is a powerful reminder of that truth. Around Colorado, many of us remember the era of “Tebowing,” when he’d drop to one knee after a play, a quiet moment of faith that somehow became a national phenomenon. But what stands out even more than the football moments is the purpose behind them. As Tebow shares in our conversation, “I realized God was calling me to pursue a different kind of MVP, not ‘Most Valuable Player,’ but ‘Most Vulnerable People.” His story reminds us that the greatest investments we make are often in people.
We also meet James Anderson, founder of Better Everyday, who is investing in lives through fitness programs designed for individuals with disabilities. His belief is simple: small actions repeated consistently create lasting change.
Of course, wise financial planning is also part of building a strong future. In this issue, the team at The Lavelle Group walks us through practical conversations around money, protection and long-term growth, reminding us that while the best time to start may have been years ago, today is still a powerful place to begin.
Sometimes investment also means protecting what you’ve worked so hard to build. In When the IRS Comes Calling, one local business owner shares the stress of discovering a costly tax mistake and how the experts at El Dorado Tax Solutions helped turn panic into a clear path forward.
Supporting businesses like these around town is more than a transaction. It’s an investment in your neighbors, their families, and the people working every day to keep our community thriving.
At the end of the day, the most valuable investments aren’t always measured in dollars, but in impact. They’re the quiet choices we make to pour into our families, our faith, our health, our passions, and the people God has placed in our lives.
Thank you for investing a few moments of your time with us this month.

An exclusive Q&A with City Lifestyle

ARTICLE BY ANGELA BROOCKERD

From championship trophies to global humanitarian impact, Tim Tebow’s journey has defied every standard playbook. In an exclusive conversation for the Share the Lifestyle podcast, Tebow pulls back the curtain on the moments that truly defined him, from a humbling middle school church retreat to the life-altering shift of fatherhood. This isn’t just a look back at a career; it’s an invitation into the heart of a man driven by purpose. Read the highlights below, then join us for the full, unfiltered experience by scanning the QR code at the end.

Q: WE ALL KNOW YOUR ACCOMPLISHMENTS ON THE FOOTBALL FIELD, BUT TELL US ABOUT THE CURL CONTEST.
A: I was competing for my future high school team (my brother’s team), and I pushed myself way past what was smart. I ended up collapsing and needing medical attention. But what stayed with me wasn’t the pain, it was the lesson. Would I be willing to do something that others aren’t? For much of my life, I strived to bring my best for a game, but I hope that I can say at the end of my life I was willing to do that for things that actually matter.
Q: YOU’VE ACHIEVED SO MUCH IN SPORTS. WHAT WOULD YOU SAY IS YOUR GREATEST ACCOMPLISHMENT NOW?
A: Becoming a dad. Nothing compares. From the moment I knew my wife was pregnant, I felt a new depth of love for our child, but when you bring your baby home, the responsibility hits you like nothing else. Suddenly, everything you see, every decision you make, you’re asking, “Is this corner too sharp? What happens if she reaches that drawer?” It changes how you see the world and how you see other people.
Q: YOU’VE SPOKEN OPENLY ABOUT DISAPPOINTMENT, ESPECIALLY AROUND FOOTBALL. HOW DID THAT SEASON OF LIFE SHAPE YOU?
A: I talked a lot about that very thing in my book Shaken . We all go through moments where our faith in our abilities and purpose feels rattled, but I believe it’s often in those storms when God can show us who we could become.
Q: YOU TALK A LOT ABOUT COMPARISON CULTURE. WHY DO YOU BELIEVE COMPARISON HAS BECOME SUCH A TRAP TODAY?
A: Because we’re comparing our real, everyday lives to someone else’s highlight reel. Social media shows people’s “best day,” often filtered and staged, and then we measure our reality against that. There’s a reason filters are so popular—it’s not real. We end up scrolling through images that don’t tell the full story, and without realizing it, comparison starts to steal our joy and our gratitude.
“We’re comparing our real, everyday lives to someone else’s highlight reel... comparison starts to steal our joy.”
Q: YOUR FOUNDATION FOCUSES ON THE “MOST VULNERABLE.” WHERE DID THAT CALLING BEGIN?
A: When I was 15, I met a boy in the Philippines who was treated as a throwaway because he was born with physical differences. That moment changed me. I realized God was calling me to pursue a different kind of MVP, not “Most Valuable Player,” but “Most Vulnerable People.”
Q: FINALLY, WHAT’S ONE THING PEOPLE MIGHT BE SURPRISED TO KNOW ABOUT YOU?
A: I have some weird coffee habits, which include protein powder, collagen, and cream all mixed together. I love golf dates with my wife. And every night, I bring snacks to bed to share with our dogs. It brings me more joy than it probably should.
This conversation barely scratches the surface. Tim goes deeper into the moments that rattled him, the joys of fatherhood, and one story he has never shared publicly until now. Scan the QR code for the full, exclusive City Lifestyle interview on Share the Lifestyle Podcast.

Smart money conversations with The Lavelle Group, chocolate included.
You’ve probably heard the saying, “The best time to plant a tree was 20 years ago. The second-best time is today.”
When it comes to money, let's adjust that slightly, “The best time to start saving was at two weeks old. The second-best time is today!”
And here’s the good news. While we may not have had a brokerage account in the nursery, we can start that early for our children. And since most of us didn’t open a Roth IRA in between diaper changes, or even decades later, we can focus on what we can control now.
Think of the following as a conversation with a trusted advisor. In this interview-style Q&A, experts Kristin and Patrick Lavelle of the The Lavelle Group, answer the financial questions many households think about and a few they often avoid.
Q: Let's get to the good stuff. What’s the financial question most people avoid?
A: Money and anything to do with it!
Q: Okay, what’s the second financial question most people avoid?
A: “If I retired tomorrow, how much of my money would be taxed?”
It’s not exciting. It won’t trend on social media. But it may be one of the most important questions you ever ask. Many households have faithfully contributed to pre-tax 401(k)s and Traditional IRAs for years. That’s disciplined and smart. The catch? That money is tax-deferred, meaning taxes haven’t disappeared. They’ve been postponed.
In retirement, withdrawals are taxable. Required Minimum Distributions can increase income, whether you need the money or not. And suddenly, the IRS becomes a larger partner in your future than you expected.
That doesn’t mean you did it wrong. It just means the plan may need balance.
Q: What’s one simple thing I can do this week?
A: Do a 15-minute “tax bucket” check.
Divide your assets into three categories:
1. Taxable
2. Tax-deferred
3. Tax-free
If most of your savings sit in tax-deferred accounts, future tax rates will matter a lot.
Q: Investing feels overwhelming. Is there a simpler way to think about it?
A: Yes. Stop thinking in products. Start thinking in layers. Every strong financial household has three: protection, stability and growth. In that order.
Q: Why protection first?
A: Because life doesn’t send calendar invites before it changes your plans. Before focusing on returns, ask: “If something major affected my health or income, how would I survive that financially?”
Living Benefits life insurance is designed with that reality in mind. In addition to a traditional death benefit, Living Benefits allow access to funds during qualifying critical illnesses. That can help protect retirement savings and long-term investments from being depleted during a difficult season. Protection isn’t pessimistic. It’s practical.

“Smart money decisions aren’t about being perfect. They’re about starting today.”

Q: What about stability?
A: Not every dollar needs to ride the stock market roller coaster.
There are tools designed to provide growth potential tied to market performance while protecting against market losses. When markets decline, your money isn’t reduced. For many families, that stability provides breathing room. It’s easier to stay invested for long-term growth when part of your plan is anchored.
Q: And growth?
A: Growth still matters.
401(k)s, IRAs, and brokerage accounts: these build long-term wealth. But growth works best when it isn’t responsible for everything: emergency protection, income guarantees, and future flexibility. When protection and stability are in place, growth can compound with less pressure.
Q: And about that “Two Weeks Old” idea…
A: Here’s something powerful: While you can’t go back and start your own savings at two weeks old, you can start your child’s or grandchild’s financial future early.
Small, consistent contributions into long-term vehicles, whether education-focused accounts or ones that are more versatile, can create decades of compounding. Time becomes the greatest asset in this strategy. Starting early doesn’t just build money. It builds future options.
Q: What does “smart money” really mean?
A: It doesn’t mean being perfect from the beginning. It means starting now. The best time may have been at two weeks old. But today? Today is still a very powerful place to begin.
Q: I heard you host free money education classes… with chocolate?
A: We do! And yes, chocolate is absolutely included. We host free money education classes that cover the fundamentals of saving, growing, and protecting money in a practical, easy-to-understand way. No jargon. No pressure. Just real conversations.
The path to financial confidence isn’t about chasing trends. It’s about building the right foundation, and that’s exactly where The Lavelle Group helps families begin, often over practical conversations and a little chocolate.

One business owner’s tax nightmare and the expert guidance that turned panic into a plan.
ARTICLE BY KEVIN GETZ PHOTOGRAPHY BY SARAH DAWN PHOTOGRAPHY
It’s all fun and games until you get a letter from the IRS.
Just ask Dale, the owner of A-Action Automotive. He thought his accounting software had everything under control, including the withholding taxes for all his employees. And although the quarterly tax forms were completed and sent to the IRS on time, no one was checking whether the payments were being sent. Nobody, that is, except the IRS.
Dale had a problem. “I was so stressed out it made me sick. I didn’t know what to do.”
It was a common mistake, one he swore to learn from, but the damage was already done. The amount he owed, including penalties and interest, seemed overwhelming. How was he going to come up with the money to pay off the IRS? He needed help, and fast.

“Our goal has always been simple: help people understand their situation clearly and give them a path forward with dignity and confidence. We believe knowledge replaces fear, and clarity creates momentum. When clients finally understand their options, you can almost see the weight lift. That moment, when panic turns into a plan, is why we do this work every day.”
— ROLLIE KERSCH
“I was in a panic, so I hired the first company I could find,” admits Dale. “They quickly quoted me a price to fix my problem, and I sent them a deposit. Their communication pretty much stopped at that point,” he explains with a sigh. “I could never get a hold of them. It seemed like they didn’t care and took forever to return my calls.” That is not the kind of help you need when the IRS is breathing down your neck.
Dale went back online and happened upon El Dorado Tax Solutions, located at 11080 Circle Point Rd in Westminster. Their approach was markedly different.
Nicolette, a tax resolution expert at El Dorado, advises tax-stressed clients every day, and she has some pointers for businesses and individuals who find themselves in debt to the IRS.
First, be wary of any firm that quotes you a onesize-fits-all price. Each case is different, and the pricing should reflect that. “Imagine phoning an auto mechanic and telling him that your car is making a terrible sound, and without taking your car for a test drive, or even popping open the hood, the mechanic gives you a price to fix the problem. You can bet the price will change once he starts the repairs, but by then it’s too late,” explains Nicolette. After an initial conversation, you are better off paying a small fee for the firm to do a thorough investigation of your tax situation. Only then do they have enough information to present you with a plan, along with their price, to make it happen.
Eligibility for most resolution programs is based on a taxpayer’s current financial standing, specifically evaluating asset equity and monthly disposable income.
At this point, many clients realize they need help creating a budget, either personally or for their business, and oftentimes for both. “We were using QuickBooks, but we weren’t taking full advantage of the software. I was busy working on cars and managing my mechanics. Bookkeeping isn’t my strong suit,” admits Dale.
That’s why getting help from a skilled accountant can be just as important as finding the right tax resolution specialist. Again, pick one that takes the time to learn about your situation before quoting you a price. Sara, the bookkeeping manager at El Dorado, explains, “Without accurate financials like profit and loss statements, balance sheets, and payroll ledgers, it’s impossible to determine how well, or poorly, your business is doing. We started a bookkeeping division after realizing just how many of our resolution clients needed help with that.”
And it’s not just for business clients. Individuals with income tax problems can also benefit from an accountant's guidance. El Dorado counsels their clients on spending habits and budgeting, giving them newfound control over their finances. “It’s impossible to negotiate a realistic payment plan for our clients without evidence of their financial condition,” says Nicolette. That’s important because the bargaining

position for someone with no assets or disposable income is very different from that of someone with assets that can be sold and a lot of disposable income. Sara adds, “That’s the great part of having both services under the same roof. It allows us to quickly and easily share information between the two.”
But there’s still the pesky job of completing a yearly income tax return. If you are making scheduled payments to the IRS for unpaid taxes, you are on their radar. Keeping current is the best way to stay on their good side, so find a good CPA by using the same process. El Dorado has one on staff, making the income tax process seamless and complete.
“I was totally stressed out and at the end of my rope,” remarks Dale, “but thanks to El Dorado Tax Solutions, I have a manageable payment plan in place, and I feel confident about my bookkeeping. Now I can concentrate on what I do best, keeping my clients on the road.”
Back to that letter from the IRS: It’s not going to read, “Congratulations! Thank you for submitting all your returns and payments accurately and on time. You are a model citizen and truly a role model for all of us to emulate.” So take a deep breath, try to relax, and know that by doing a bit of research and asking the right questions, you can find professionals to see you through your tax debt nightmare.

A
“Most people who walk through our doors aren’t careless—they’re overwhelmed. Tax problems rarely begin with one big mistake but with small issues that go unnoticed over time. By the time someone reaches out for help, stress and uncertainty have usually taken a heavy toll, not just financially, but emotionally as well.”

“I would give Kelsi and her team my highest recommendation. Under very difficult circumstances, she was calm, professional, kind and compassionate. She was on top of every detail, and communicated extremely well. In short, her services were flawless. Our family is most grateful and will never forget her kindness.” ~Cathy Babington

Small actions repeated consistently until they become habits. That’s where James Anderson believes real change begins. Working closely with individuals with disabilities and neurodivergence, he has seen firsthand how steady effort from both clients and parents leads to lasting transformation. For James, progress isn’t defined by dramatic breakthroughs but by intentional investment, showing up day after day in ways that quietly build resilience, confidence and independence.
That mindset traces back to middle school, where James volunteered to coach students with special needs through the City of Boulder program known as EXPAND, as part of his school curriculum. What began as a way to earn credit became something more after a teacher told him he had a natural ability to connect with the kids. The comment stayed with him, and a passion grew.
Years later, while working at an adult day program and earning a certification as a registered behavior technician, that passion resurfaced in a defining moment. One afternoon, a teenage boy was struggling with anger, and James took him outside to throw

rocks into a lake. The boy’s mood shifted immediately as the tension eased. It became clear that movement regulates emotions.
From that moment, James saw a future that blended his love of sports with working with special needs individuals. As an NSCA Certified Strength & Conditioning Specialist, James began designing individualized fitness programs for the clients and tracking improvements in mood, behavior and physical health After seeing the undeniable results, James saw that this underserved population needed more attention in the health and fitness space, and Better Everyday was born.
Today, James focuses on building resilience as much as strength, believing lasting change begins with the family. “As parents, you are the number one role model in your kid’s life,” he says. “They observe your actions more than your words.” Even small choices, like a 10-minute walk instead of screen time, compound over time.
That philosophy comes to life in his work with Erin Conroy, who has cerebral palsy and uses a powerchair. After COVID disrupted

her community activities, such as swimming, it was difficult to regain momentum. At home, online fitness videos weren’t designed for Erin’s specific physical limitations, including limited use of one arm and her legs. Local gyms proved inaccessible, reinforcing what her mom, Melinda, calls a difficult truth: “The disability community is one of the most underserved groups in the fitness business.”
While searching for alternatives, Melinda found James on social media. Nearly two years later, their partnership has reshaped Erin’s routine. James created a plan tailored to Erin’s abilities, building strength that supports everyday independence. For example, she can now lift her legs high enough to help with pants and shoes—a small victory that makes her feel more independent and helps Melinda out too. Erin’s stamina in the pool has also improved, so the gains extend well beyond their sessions.
“She feels more relaxed and less anxious after exercising, and she sleeps well,” Melinda shared. Erin also sees James in a group setting at FRIENDS of Broomfield (her day program), which adds to the social benefit. Her best friend works out with James, too, so they can compare notes, like who has the bigger biceps.”
Erin’s competitive streak now shows up at home. She challenges her family to get their steps in. “She roasts her stepdad and me if we don’t keep up with her,” Melinda laughed. “Fitness doesn’t feel like something we each do on our own; it’s part of our weekly routine.” Erin also proudly invites arm-wrestling matches. “She can beat me. James is still out of reach, but not for long!”
Consistency isn’t always easy. “Erin has a busy life, and some days she’s tired,” Melinda said. “But showing up is half the battle.”
James is good at reading how the day is going, so he uses what motivates Erin, like music, to switch it up a bit.”
Melinda encourages other parents to take that first step. Families of children with special needs spend countless hours in therapies. These are vital services that support development, but siblings and peers often experience sports and fitness in community settings. Now, Erin can share stories about her workouts with her sister and friends, strengthening those social bonds. “And she has fun,” Melinda added.
For James, stories like Erin’s affirm what he’s always believed: meaningful change doesn’t happen all at once. It happens through steady, intentional investment, one step at a time.
