Prepping Your Garden for Spring Planting

BROOMFIELD’S ACME HYDROPONICS & ORGANICS GIVES EXPERT TIPS FOR A SUCCESSFUL HARVEST.

Map out your available space with pen and paper. This will help you plant each variety in the most ideal spot and help you decide what to grow where (we recommend growing what you like to eat).

Consider your plant hardiness zone. This will increase your ability to create a garden that can flourish from year to year and make gardening less frustrating. In the Broomfield area, most of us are in zones 5b-6a.

Clean your garden beds by removing debris, old plant labels, etc. Prepare your soil by adding a thin layer of organic compost or organic amendments to your beds. Try a no-till method to keep your soil alive.

3. Check your inventory for gardening supplies and seeds, then stock up at ACME Hydroponics & Organics. Start seeds indoors by working backward from your average last frost date, which is typically around May 7th.

Begin the hardening-off process seven to 14 days before planting your seedlings outdoors, slowly acclimating your plants to outdoor conditions. This helps prevent transplant shock and prepares your plants to thrive outside.

ing from 1 to 93 years old), we needed space for entertainment,” Christina explained. “I love being outside. We knew we wanted a backyard for family games, dining, and shared moments.”

In fact, family gatherings were so important to them that they chose a house based on the backyard—a large, blank canvas that they designed with patios and landscaping. Christina stated, “Having large patios and an outside kitchen were a must. I love to cook and have dinner parties.”

There was just one problem: it was hot. The sun is potent in a western-facing backyard. “Nothing is worse than watching your friends and family sweat and compete for what little shade your backyard provides,” winced Christina. “It didn’t take long to realize we needed to cover the main patio.”

And so, outdoor gatherings came to a halt as the couple began looking at patio-covering solutions. Christina and

quest to find a solution, they looked at wood gazebos, sails, rooflines and more.

Meanwhile, the beautiful backyard rarely experienced people enjoying it for two years. It was depressing all around.

And then, things clicked. At a home show, Christina and Tony explored various companies offering gazebos, sunrooms, and outdoor design elements. While admiring a display, Christina overheard Tony chatting with someone. To her surprise, it was Travis from Green Gable Roofing, a company that they had used before. The meeting sparked a conversation about their needs, preferences and the decision to avoid wood options due to maintenance concerns with an existing deck. Travis showed them some alternative material samples, which led to an in-home appointment. Travis and Christina reviewed materials, sizes, colors and roof options. By the end of the consult, Christina was sold.

They extensively reviewed the size and placement of the gazebo on the stone patio before Travis ordered materials. Christina emphasized the significance, stating, "Proper placement is crucial, and not all companies prioritize it." With ample space and minimal foliage, positioning the gazebo was key to optimizing shade coverage and patio usage.

Once the gazebo was installed in October 2023, Christina and Tony spent some quiet evenings enjoying wine by their outdoor fireplace under the gazebo. Since the gazebo is an extension of their home and can be used yearround, “We’re going to get together with family and friends a lot more. And from now on, we expect them not to wilt from the heat!” laughed Christina. “I’m so excited that this space will now be usable whenever the sun is out, which is most days! The gazebo is beautiful, and it’s not typical or common.”

The story isn’t quite over though— Christina and Tony plan to do more. The gazebo was wired for electricity, which means a ceiling fan and lighting are in short order, and the family energetically debates where to put a TV! With other additional backyard improvements in the works, such as a water fixture, this family will surely enjoy the outdoor space for years to come—all in the comfort of the shade.

DESIGNING FOR DELIGHT

Practical Design Tips for Making a House a Haven

Transforming a house into a home is an art.

“Designing a home is more than a materialistic display,” local interior decorator, Peggy Haddad, shares. “How your home feels, and how you feel about your home, influences how much time you actually want to spend there and if you want to invite others into your space.” A well-designed home offers rest, delight, refreshment, and a place to make and keep memories.

Most of us aren’t accomplished artists in this kind of tapestry. We find ourselves needing some practical tools when designing the interiors of our home. Lucky for us, creating a welcoming, beautiful, restful home requires some transferable “science” in addition to innate artistry. Peggy, an accountant turned decorator, offers some practical tips for creating a delightful home.

Deciding on your personal style preference comes first, followed by selecting your statement pieces. Peggy suggests, “When choosing art, you must first consider the size of the room and the contents of other walls. You don’t want two large paintings in

one room.” For a big wall, it’s best to have one large work of art or a pair of stackable or side-by-side pieces. A gallery wall, made of multiple frames arranged together, is another great option, as is an art ledge. An art ledge utilizes one or two larger pieces of art and then compliments them with a few other pieces that vary in texture, size, content, and framing.

Personal budget also necessitates important consideration when choosing art. You might be willing to pay top dollar for a unique, one-of-a-kind piece. If having an original piece is less of a priority, and your budget is less flexible, consider an artist-enhanced print. Though replications of original pieces, artist-enhanced prints are still one of a kind, because the artist manually

adds unique touches to each print. Art prints found at home goods stores or print shops are an excellent option for decorating your home if budget trumps originality.

Once you’ve chosen your main pieces of art, it’s best to be aware of some frequent mistakes made during installation. “The most common error I see is art hung too high,” remarks Peggy. “The center of the piece should hang 60 inches above the ground.” There are a few exceptions to this rule. Large art hung above furniture should leave about 4-6 inches between the top of the furniture and the bottom edge of the art. The piece should be about ²/3 the width of the furniture.

should be hung so they barely touch, or ‘kiss’ the floor. Their rods must be at least 8-10 inches above the window frame and extend 6 inches on either side of the window,” Peggy expounds. Rugs are often too small for their space, and furniture should not be pushed up against a wall. Peggy says, “Pieces need a little room to breathe.”

These design hints are just the tip of the home decor iceberg. Though it may be initially overwhelming, cultivating a design for your home can be managed by following some clear guidelines. A little extra intentionality and effort transforms a mediocre, utilitarian space into a haven of rest, peace, and enjoyment.

A BATHROOM OASIS IN A BROOMFIELD HOME.

This is exactly the experience Paul and Michelle Economakos had in mind when it came time to renovate their bathroom, nestled in the lower level of their Broomfield home of 35 years.

They wanted to elevate the master bath to be a retreat where they could unwind and relax after a long day. “While Paul dreamt of a steam shower, I wanted to escape to the beach,” Michelle shares.

Paul is an accomplished master builder, but after the physical toll the upstairs renovation took on him, he decided to enlist the help of his apprentice, Jarred Thompson, owner of J & P Builds, to make their bathroom oasis dreams come true.

Early in his woodworking career, Paul took Jarred under his wing to show him exactly what quality workmanship looked like so he could pass down the same high standard of work.

Eventually, Jarred took over the family owned business, J & P Services, and has kept the caliber of work he came to value, with goals to expand to Arizona by 2025.

With confidence in her nephew, Michelle praised the work and added, “The bathroom turned out better than we could have hoped.”
