Quick poll: What characterizes the “Broomfield lifestyle”?
If you said “family” or “enjoying the outdoors,” you’re likely in the majority opinion!
Truth be told, when it comes to enjoying the outdoors, children and pets exude a level of enthusiasm and drive to explore that’s hard to rival. Ask me how I know! In my household, there are two 5-year-olds and a 4-year-old. One of them is a Labrador Retriever.
So, since enjoying the outdoors with family is a key characteristic of the Broomfield lifestyle, I invite you to reflect on some of the experiences and memories you’ve made so far this summer with your family and friends. What has been the highlight of your summer? Did you enjoy a hike or camping trip that was unforgettable? Did you try something new? Did you meet anyone new, or make a new friend? If not, there is still time to make a plan, block out some time on your calendar, and squeeze the best out of what’s left of summer before the fall season arrives.
Maybe a story in this “Kids & Pets” issue will spark something, or inspire you to get out and enjoy the beautiful community we call “home.” We covered a wide variety of topics, from tips on selecting the best four-legged-friend for your family, to enjoying one of the many trails we have right here in our backyard. If you have younger children in your household, you’ll definitely want to read about our local Cub Scout Pack 545 and the positive impact they have on our community.
In closing, I want to express my gratitude to our loyal readers and committed advertisers. Broomfield Lifestyle is so much more than a publication. Over the past two years, it has become what I hoped it would become — a way for people that treasure and value this community to find and connect with each other, to learn, share, and be inspired to do more and live the best life possible.

ARE YOU THINKING ABOUT GETTING A DOG? THEN READ ON!
ARTICLE BY JULIE WALKER
PHOTOGRAPHY BY SARAH DAWN PHOTOGRAPHY
Oh, the thrill of getting a dog! The sloppy kisses, tail wags, and snuggles on the couch. And don’t forget about all the outdoor adventures! From long walks to splashing in puddles to chasing squirrels (the dog, not you), you can foresee many wonderful days ahead with a new furry member in your household.
There’s just something so exciting about getting a four-legged friend. To help our readers, we reached out to the experts at Animal Oasis of the Rockies in Broomfield to provide some advice on what to expect when you’re expecting a dog. Dr. Stacey Huber shared the following tips.
To determine what type of dog to consider, think about what would be the best fit for your personality and lifestyle:
• Are you an active person or family? Or are you more laid-back?
• Are you financially prepared to afford a dog, specifically certain breeds that may need more attention and vet visits?
• Do you already have a pet(s)?
• Do you have children or are you thinking of having children?
• Do you plan on training your dog?
• What is your work/life balance? Will you be gone for long periods of time throughout the day?
If you’re an active person or family, consider a younger dog and/or an active breed so they can join in on your activities. Weimaraners, Dalmatians, Vizslas, German Shorthaired Pointers, Rhodesian Ridgebacks and more are some breeds to consider.
If you have or are planning to have children, some great family-friendly breeds include Beagles, Poodles, King Charles Cavaliers, Retrievers, Collies and many more.
When you find yourself debating between breeds, there are organizations that do temperament testing to observe a dog before considering a breed or rescue. Either way, you should definitely consider other pets in the household, and if possible, let the new addition meet the other pets before making a final decision. Answering these questions as well as reviewing the following tips will help guide you to the perfect pooch for you and your family.
Dr. Stacey HuberIdentify a centrally located space for the dogs belongings so they can feel included. Don’t forget to puppy-proof your home (whether you’re getting a puppy or an older dog)! A new pet will be very curious and possibly teething, so put things away like exposed cords and anything you don’t want to get chewed up.
Be prepared to welcome your new dog home by having the right supplies! On day one, have the following items:
• A crate—make sure the crate size will be enough space for your dog to grow.
• Water and dog food bowls.
• Choose a healthy, high-quality, AAFCOapproved food for puppies or all life stages, and slowly transition your pet from the original food to the new high-quality food. Also, make sure you get enough food from the breeder or rescue for at least 14 days. Please note that it’s not recommended to feed dogs a grain-free diet.
• Dog treats for training.
• A collar and leash.
• A bed.
• Dog toys.
When you bring your dog home, it’s time to bond! Here are some fun ways to show your dog some love:
• Use your dog voice! It may seem a little silly at first, but studies show that dogs actually understand human language better than previously thought.
• Cuddle or nap with your dog. Most dogs enjoy physical contact, so a cuddle provides comfort and connection.
• Pet your dog. A lot! The simple act of petting your dog releases oxytocin (a hormone that helps reduce stress) in you and your dog, so while you’re cuddling, give your dog some extra pets. Rub your dog’s ears too—their ears are full of feeling receptors.
• Last but not least, take lots of picturesof your new addition! And enjoy those sloppy kisses and snuggles for all the days to come!
Just like humans, dogs need regular wellness exams, especially when you first bring a dog home. All dogs need vaccines to keep them safe and healthy and prevent them from getting diseases.
If you don’t have a veterinarian already, Dr. Stacey Huber of Animal Oasis of the Rockies recommends contacting one before you bring your dog home. That way, you can bring your dog in to see a vet shortly after settling in.
Dr. Huber also recommends considering pet insurance, as a company like Pawlicy.com could save you thousands of dollars over your pet’s life.

As the summer comes to a close, we are reminded of outdoor festivities with friends and family, basking in the sun, sleeping under the stars, and the copious amounts of smiles captured and housed in the photo albums of our smartphones. With such a fun-filled season under our belts, what better way to send off summer and make a few more lasting memories than by attending a spectacular soiree?
Those who know, know, but if you’re one of the select few that missed out on last year’s gala debut, let’s put it this way: if art speaks words that cannot be explained, the Broomfield Council of Arts & Humanities Annual Gala will transport you into a live canvas of creativity. Expect to be absorbed into a world where you, as the guest, are both viewer and participant. Enjoy signature cocktails and hors d’oeuvres al Fresca as stilt walkers sashay through the crowd and music provided by the Broomfield Symphony Orchestra and Colorado Repertory Singers serenade the event. Discover the surreal and unusual within the signature Creative Immersion Room whose motif this year, is an exploration of the senses (spoiler alert: expect dessert by A Spice of Life Catering).
Carrying over a fan-favorite dress code of Creative Black Tie, get innovative through attire. (For reference, the decadent masquerade masks, light-up ball gowns, and handmade haute fascinators from last year’s event make the Royal Wedding look like casual date night.)
With hands-on creative stations, storytellers, aerialists, circus art performers and SO much more, peppered throughout the evening’s agenda, this highly anticipated affair is nothing short of inspirational—and all in
support of the Broomfield Council of Arts & Humanities (BCAH).
Since its inception in 1973, BCAH, a registered 501(c)3 nonprofit organization, has made a transformative difference in support of the arts having board leaders opening the first dance studio and art guild in Broomfield among other accomplishments to enhance this small but growing community. Established by a conglomerate of local leaders, artists, and a board of forward thinkers, these members have been the head and heart of the BCAH organization. Their dedication and tireless efforts make these programs possible and accessible to everyone.
“Not everyone has access to art. Location and finances are just a few reasons why many Colorado residents lack the chance to participate in art programs or cultural events. To BCAH, creativity is essential to a healthy, well-balanced life and the driving force behind what we do,” Executive Director, Keri Dillingham explains. “From the beginning, the founders of the organization recognized a dire need to interweave arts and culture into the fabric of the Broomfield community. Since then, we are constantly asking ourselves, ‘What does the community need and how do we deliver’”?
Serving over 30,000 Broomfield residents and visitors in 2022 alone, through staff-presented programs, performances, and events (90% of which are free to attend) BCAH is on a constant mission to continue its vision to create a more “vibrant, engaging and inclusive community” by offering programs that introduce us to diverse cultures and explore intriguing topics like space science.
“Our family moved to Broomfield right before the pandemic. Our finances became an issue because of it and we couldn't get to know our new community being stuck at home,” one family shares. “(BCAH's) Summer Saturday (Drive-thru) events gave us a chance to love where we live…The
events were free, too…We can pay our bills but not much else, so (BCAH) has been a blessing for us.”
If you are interested in attending this year’s spectacular evening of inspiration in support of BCAH and the arts, tickets are available at: ArtsinBroomfield.org.
And don’t forget to make room on your smartphones for more memories.
BCAH is on a constant mission to continue their vision to create a more “vibrant, engaging and inclusive community.”

The Kids Protection Plan® offers an extraordinary level of protection that goes beyond simply naming guardians. It shields children from becoming wards of the state, even before a court ruling, bridging the gap between tragedy and legal proceedings. With this plan, families can rest assured that their children will be cared for according to their wishes, regardless of the circumstances.
Taking a comprehensive and holistic approach to family protection, the Kids Protection Plan® empowers parents to provide detailed instructions on their children's upbringing in unforeseen circumstances. It covers short-term guardianship, long-term care arrangements, and considers every aspect of the children's well-being. Additionally, the plan includes essential provisions such as instructions to caregivers, a custom ID card for parents to carry, and medical powers of attorney for trusted individuals. With the Kids Protection Plan®, families have the necessary tools to protect their children's physical, emotional, and financial well-being, ensuring they are in the best hands possible.
According to Ben, "The Kinney Law office is different because it was built with the needs of growing families in mind." He continues, "We understand the demands of a busy life, as you are raising children and caring for elderly parents while also striving to build your own nest egg for a lifetime of support."
Ease, convenience, and efficiency are important to families, and people want to make the best decisions for their family's future. Ensuring that minor children are raised by family or friends is a priority. They also want to ensure that teens and adult children are properly prepared to handle unforeseen and challenging circumstances that can come with the loss of their parents.

PHOTOGRAPHY BY CUB SCOUT PACK 545
Founded in 2001, Pack 545's mission is to promote character development, citizenship training, personal fitness, and leadership.
In addition to those core values, Pack 545 places special emphasis on family participation, honoring veterans and first responders, and healthy competition. They pride themselves in including every child in activities and events.
Meet Sylas Boyle, leader, Pack 545 “I am one of many leaders and parents that help lead Pack 545 in Broomfield,” says Sylas. “Like many others in our pack leadership, I was a Boy Scout in my youth. While I started late and couldn’t reach Eagle by the time I aged out (the deadline is your 18th birthday), I learned so many invaluable skills and had so many amazing experiences. I was so positively changed by my short time in Scouts that I swore if I ever had kids I would start them early and do everything I could to support them.”
Now, many years after Sylas made that promise to himself, he and his wife,
Elizabeth, have three sons who are all involved in Scouting. Their 2nd grade son is part of a den that he and Elizabeth co-lead.
All (dis)abilities welcome “One of the remarkable qualities of Scouting that attracted me from my first meeting as a teen was the unflinching support of children of all abilities and disabilities,” said Sylas. “I myself was born with only one hand and got to experience firsthand (pun intended, I can’t help myself) the love and support of my fellow Scouts and leaders as I learned a new skill, or worked towards advancement, or tried to complete an obstacle course at summer camp.”
Over the years, Sylas has worked alongside Scouts with a wide variety of disabilities. He has helped deaf, blind, amputees, and a host of other Scouts with disabilities. All were undeterred by their apparent limitations and everyone was enriched by their unique perspectives, personalities and work ethic. It's a quality he sees thriving
more than ever in the Scouting community and especially in Pack 545 today.
All three of Sylas and Elizabeth's sons are impacted to various degrees by either Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) or Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD). While challenging, they see it as a blessing to use unique life experiences to help them navigate their own challenges. As a den leader for their oldest son, they happened to have several kids working through their own challenges caused by ASD. Undeterred by these challenges, they adapted meetings to meet the needs of the kids. Parents worked alongside their children to give them the extra support they needed, and the kids in the den all rallied around them. Friendships formed and personal growth in all of the kids was truly inspiring for all involved. Even for kids without physical or developmental disabilities, there is no better education than surrounding yourself with those who are different from you.
Not just for boys For Sylas, Scouting has always been a family ordeal. His friend’s sisters always tagged along with the family to meetings, and participated in troop activities. However, they weren’t allowed to officially be a Scout, and therefore couldn’t be recognized for their achievements alongside their male counterparts. This all changed in 2018 when the Boy Scouts reorganized themselves to Scouts BSA and opened the door for girls to join.
Pack 545, like many, has fully integrated dens with both boys and girls, and it’s nothing but positive for all involved. Elizabeth is a huge advocate and supporter of girls in Scouting. As a child, joining Boy Scouts and earning Eagle Scout would have been a welcomed opportunity for her. She is thankful that young girls today have this amazing opportunity open to them.
From the parent of a girl in Wolves, a 2nd grade den in Pack 545: “Eveline has really enjoyed her first year in Cub Scouts, especially hiking, camping, and putting on a magic show with her den. We are both looking forward to more opportunities to get outdoors next year. I was in the Scouting program growing up and am thrilled that these opportunities are now available to her. We appreciate Elizabeth and Sylas's leadership of the den and its activities, and the efforts they made to ensure that Eveline felt welcome and included despite being the only girl in the den when she joined.”
Thinking about giving it a shot? Here’s what to expect: Camping, hiking, model rockets, community service projects, fire station visits, crafts, games, summer camps, and of course the iconic Pinewood Derby (gravity-powered blocks of pinewood the kids fashion into race cars limited only by their imaginations). These are just a sampling of activities and adventures kids from kindergarten through 5th grade experience in a single year in Cub Scouts. Every school year builds upon previous years’ skills and experiences to build up boys and girls, teaching them the principles of the Scout Oath and Law along the way. Parents participate alongside their children, helping them learn and creating new memories and friendships that last a lifetime. Kids are recognized and awarded for their hard work, which they proudly display on their uniforms.
Parents have opportunities to lead, network with other leaders in the area, and learn new skills through the organization’s many training opportunities.
If any of this is resonating with you, Sylas, Elizabeth, and Pack 545 want you to know that the door is open. Your entire family is welcome to experience what Scouting has to offer, and they'd love to take the next step on a grand adventure with you! Visit www.Pack545.com for more information.
