Idyllic Summer
On two occasions, I have had the privilege of working with Steve Sorensen on a cover story for Broomfield Lifestyle. Steve is an award-winning photographer, and thanks to his willingness to share his experiences, we get to learn a bit about parts of the world outside of the treasured bubble we call “Broomfield.” Steve brings color and flavor to our lives, and without artists like him, our world would be dull. I’m using my publication to give him the opportunity to brighten your world, and if his story and photography in this special issue of Broomfield Lifestyle brings a smile to your face or sparks a desire to get out and explore, would you take a moment to follow him on social media? Search for EarthReflected on Facebook and Instagram. His beautiful content is sure to stand out in your daily feed. You can also view his stunning galleries on EarthReflected.com.
With that, I invite you to reflect on some of your favorite summer memories. What is your “idyllic summer?” Summer has meant many different things to me in different phases of my life. As I watch my two beautiful daughters light up with excitement over simple things like playing in the grass, collecting rollie pollies, riding bikes, face painting, ice cream and mud pies, I’m reminded to “be where my feet are.” Maybe I’ve long-forgotten the pure joy of running through the sprinklers and playing hide-andseek long past sundown, but my kids are living every moment to its fullest. As their father, I have plenty of things to teach them.
But what are they teaching me?
Friends, stay present. Enjoy each moment. Be kind, and enjoy this season we call summer!

Because of their voracious appetite for insects, praying mantis are sometimes considered a friend to farmers and gardeners, since they work well as a natural form of pest control. They keep the bad bugs under control in your garden, such as aphids and grasshoppers.

A FOOT ON THE GROUND, CAMERA IN HAND: ENJOY THIS SERIAL TRAVELER’S EXPERIENCE IN THE ANDES.
While my wife, Carol, and I love to travel for leisure, adventure, education, and relaxation, this time was different. We were on a mission. That mission was to run the Patagonia Marathon in Torres del Paine National Park. For us, it was a dream to run 26.2 miles in what may be the most beautiful National Park in the world! We realize that running a marathon like this is not for everyone. However, Chile, Patagonia, and Torre del Paine National Park CAN be for everyone. That is if you gravitate to wild, raw untamed places, majestic mountains, and abundant wildlife.
Our adventure began in Peru, and after ten days exploring there, it was time to head south to Chile and Patagonia. We flew from Cuzco, Peru to Santiago, Chile, overnighted, and caught an early morning flight to Porto Natales, Chile.
As any traveler knows, it’s often the luck of the draw on which side of the plane you get. We happened to get the left side, the proper side in this case. During a 3.5-hour flight, I had my face pressed

I am Steve Sorensen, a Colorado Native, international award-winning professional photographer and serial traveler. I love exploring the world for the sake of my art and how it fills up my soul. into the window, marveling at the magnificence of the Andes Mountains. I have seen a lot of mountain ranges, but nothing compares to the Andes. Neither of us had visited Chile before, and halfway through the flight (having yet to set foot on Chilean soil), I told Carol we’d be coming back. And as fate would have it, we will be returning in March of 2024 to cruise Chilean fjords and the coast of Argentina.
I'm thrilled to share a bit of this grand and challenging adventure, starting with Porto Natales, which is the jump off point to Torres del Panie National Park. Not unlike our mountain towns in Colorado, it is a combination of grungy and upscale boutique. The food was spectacular everywhere. Porto Natales fronts the Señoret Channel, (more like a lake, than a channel), then as you look up, there’s the imposing front range of Torres del Paine/Andes Mountains.
From there, we headed to the Eco-Lodge which was our home for the next week. This is "glamping" at its finest. Nestled snugly at the foot of the Paine Massif are cabins taking the form of geodesic domes that are warm and cozy. Each footstep outside created a gawking moment, and even more so a humbling moment, with the Massif rising like a skyscraper looming overhead.
When we booked the Eco-Lodge we didn’t know what to expect. We found it through a referral from another running friend. It looked interesting, but interesting can swing both ways. What we found was five-star guest service, a chef that could whip up a five-star meal in minutes, and exceptional staff — genuinely helpful with great attitudes that loved their jobs.
The Eco-Camp provided numerous adventure activities, mostly hikes geared toward finding wildlife, majestic scenery, and car safaris. Discovering more moments of awe and grandeur was easy! I was taken by the variety of birds and was thrilled to be high enough on a mountain during a hike to look out directly upon an Andean Condor, with a massive wingspan of eight to ten feet! On this same hike we saw them nesting… fabulous!

As I mentioned at the beginning, we were on a mission, and I'm happy to share that we completed this once-in-a-lifetime marathon. It was as grueling as it was beautiful. That said, the reward for each hill climbed was a new vista of Torre del Paine. Snow-capped peaks, mountain lions and numerous guanacos (a camelid indigenous to South America that look like llamas, only wild) all watching a parade of runners trudging along.
I’ll close with some practical advice for those that may be interested in a journey such as this: because of the race, we visited in
“This is a place that left me speechless, and if you lean to the adventurous, go!”
September, which is early spring in this part of the world. The upside is that it’s not as crowded, room availability is better and the wild things are blooming. The downside is that it can be rainy, colder and one thing infamous about Torre del Paine is the wind. It’s the first time I’ve seen a wind warning gauge on the hiking trail. Just be prepared. During one particular stretch, I have no doubt that I could have opened my jacket and easily taken a one-way flight to Antarctica.
All said, Torres del Paine is one of the most beautiful places on earth. This is where I often cite the greatest traveler of all time, “Travel, it makes you speechless, then turns you into a storyteller”! ~ Ibn Batuta.
This is a place that left me speechless, and if you lean to the adventurous, go!

Safe, natural techniques for removing resistance and blocks around living a life free from limiting thoughts and behaviors.
“Carolyn’s hypnotherapy is amazing! We had our session through Zoom and it was like she was sitting right in front of me. I tend to be an over-thinker and was worried that I couldn’t be hypnotized, or would at least resist, but she was able to gently guide me under in just a few minutes. The results of just one session have been profound and I have a knowing that the results are permanent. I highly recommend her and am looking forward to more sessions!” -Client, Samuel H 720-480-8426
Summer is here! Long days filled with sun, kids running around in the sprinklers, teenagers sleeping in until noon, evenings having dinner outside, vacations, camping—all kinds of fun!
And on the flip side—kids hyped up on sugar and “so bored,” arguments about curfew, struggling to get kids to do their chores, parents juggling kids and work, and lack of a routine—these are just some of the not-so-fun parts of summer.
Summer may bring additional layers of obstacles for adolescents or teens with mental health challenges due to a lack of routine, not seeing friends regularly, missing key teachers or using school as an escape.
Mental health issues have carried a stigma throughout history, but fortunately, things have changed in the last several years. From public figures talking about their mental health to much more attention during the pandemic, people are now a lot more aware and accepting of the importance of mental health.
“People went through so much during the pandemic—even those who normally don’t believe in mental health challenges were tested,” said Matt Lakin, Director of Business Development at Centennial Peaks Hospital. “It affected everyone, and people became more aware of and understanding of it. It’s one of the silver linings of the pandemic.”
YOU’RE NOT ALONE: HELP IS HEREARTICLE BY JULIE WALKER PHOTOGRAPHY BY SARAH DAWN PHOTOGRAPHY
If your child is struggling and you’re unsure what to do, know there’s help available. “Navigating through the mental health space can be overwhelming. Many people don’t know what they need,” Matt said. “Centennial Peaks offers free level-of-care assessments so we can make a recommendation. Not everyone needs an inpatient stay, but kids could benefit from an Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP) or Partial Hospital Program (PHP) to start living a fulfilling life.”
The parents of a 15-year-old realized their child (referred to as “Jesse” here to protect the patient’s privacy) needed mental health help when Jesse began struggling in school and expressed thoughts of suicide and selfharm. They turned to Centennial Peaks for help, and Jesse entered the PHP program.
While Jesse was resistant at first, she made great strides. In the program, she learned new coping skills, including listening to music. As a result, Jesse’s communication with her parents really improved, and she can talk about her needs more openly now. “I’ve used my new skills a lot, especially with how to communicate with my mom,” said Jesse.
Matt said, “The IOP and PHP programs are great options for struggling teenagers but don’t necessarily need to be in an inpatient setting. Especially in the summer, this offers structure and skill development to help them manage their mental health symptoms.”
Jesse expressed that transitioning back to school was difficult, but the skills she learned made the process easier. Jesse said, “I know what I needed to do. I was even helping my friends with mental health issues too. People need to know that it’s okay not to be okay and that there’s help out there.”
Jesse said if people don’t want to be hospitalized or on a unit, they must put in the work. Many teenagers are struggling right now, and it’s nice to know that people care and want to help. “I’ve benefited from my stay here.”
If you think your teen needs help, know that going to an ER isn’t the only option. Matt explains, “ERs can be expensive, and the environment there isn’t conducive for people in a mental health crisis. Instead, you can call Centennial Peaks directly, and licensed clinicians can help you with next steps. And if we’re not the right fit, they can recommend other programs in the area.”
One of the things that makes Centennial Peaks unique is that they’re an accredited school. Amelia Mandell, Sunlight Academy School teacher, helps keep students updated on their school work and has classes for multiple subjects, so your student shouldn’t fall behind.
In addition, art, music and recreation therapy is an option for inpatient units. Keegan Fike, MM, MTBC, explained, “Music therapy is amazing because it reaches individuals on a different level and allows them to express emotions that words can’t. We see people really improve expressing emotions through music.”
Matt concludes, “At Centennial Peaks, every staff member is passionate about helping others, and we really believe in our mission and core values. Reach greater heights in your recovery with Centennial Peaks!”
1.Maintain a schedule. Whether it’s waking up at a certain time, activities or free time, create a schedule and stick to it.
2.Create healthy living habits. Habits include exercise, balanced eating, sleep hygiene and positive social engagement.
3.Listen to understand—not to respond. When your teen shares something, actively listen to understand their perspective rather than defend your own.
4.Celebrate accomplishments. Your teen put away the dishes today—acknowledge it! The more you reinforce positive behavior, the less time you’ll spend redirecting negative behaviors.
“Our goal is to help as many people as we can and get the word out that you can call or seek help at any time during the year. Mental health does not discriminate—it affects everyone. Also, navigating through the mental health space can be overwhelming. Many people don’t know what they need or what could be helpful. Centennial Peaks offers free level of care assessments so that we can make a recommendation based on what’s going on for the individual. Not everyone needs an inpatient stay, but several could benefit from an IOP or PHP, and start living a fulfilling life. Every staff member here is passionate about helping others, and we really believe in our mission and core values.”
One of Broomfield’s treasures, this is a place where your child will learn, connect, and grow!

The Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) has a list of 14 common fraud schemes on its "Scams and Safety" 1 web page, including credit card theft. The thief makes small purchases with your stolen credit card number and sees if they go through; if they do, then they hit your account for bigger purchases. You should have an email, text message, or phone alert set up with your credit card company, so that the bank will contact you if there are any unusual spending items. If there are illegitimate charges, you must report to the bank as soon as possible so you won't be charged for those items. The bank will lock your account and send you a new card in the mail. This can be frustrating when you have set up monthly withdrawals to be charged against your card. You'll have to go to those companies' websites and change the card numbers you use for those charges.
The FBI says protect your computer2 by keeping systems and software up to date and install a strong reputable anti-virus program. Also, keep your operating system up to date, and turn your computer off when it's not in use. You will pay a yearly fee for antivirus, antispyware, and firewall software services, but the safety they provide makes it well worth the cost. Be careful when connecting to a public Wi-Fi network and create a strong and unique passphrase for each online account you hold and change them regularly. If you've been the victim of a scam, file a complaint with your local/state police department's cybercrime unit and file a complaint with the FBI's Internet Crime Complaint Center (IC3).3
The more you know about e-scams and fraudulent schemes, the safer you will feel. Another way to protect yourself is by going to the Federal Trade Commission's (FTC's) 4 website. Its function is to protect America's consumers by educating and taking consumer complaints on everything from identity theft to unwanted telemarketing solicitations by phone or by email. It runs the National Do Not Call Registry,5 which you should sign up for. Once you are on the do-not-call list for at least 31 days, the calls/emails should stop, and if they don't, then you can file a complaint with the FTC. You can register each phone number that you have, and your registration won't expire. You can check the FTC's website to see if your phone number is still registered.5 Remember, it's not OK for companies to leave recorded voicemails on your phone, so you can file a complaint if you receive unwanted telemarketing robocalls. Once you are registered on the do-not-call list, it's illegal for those telemarketers to continue to call you. Use your common sense. If you don't recognize the area code or the phone number on your caller ID, chances are it's a telemarketing call. Don't answer it, or if you do, insist that they take you off their call list.
To keep up to date on current scams that are plaguing consumers, the FTC has an email alert system that you can sign up for.6

INSTRUCTIONS:

MATERIALS:
• 10 drops lemon essential oil
• 10 drops lemongrass essential oil
• 4 drops lavender essential oil
• 1.5 ounces distilled water
(minus 1 teaspoon to make room for the essential oils in the bottle)
• .5 ounce 95% proof grain alcohol*
INSTRUCTIONS:
In a 2-ounce spray bottle, add the grain alcohol (or Solubol) and drop in essential oils. Swirl to combine. Place the cap back on the bottle. Allow the oils to disperse in the alcohol for about 1 hour, then add distilled water, swirling again to combine.
*The grain alcohol is used as a preservative as well as a carrier for the oils, but you can also use a product like this instead of grain alcohol at a 1:4 ratio (1 drop essential oil to 4 drops Solubol) if you’d rather and then just fill the rest with water to fill the 2-ounce spray bottle.
While there can be concern about citrus oils on the skin when exposed to sunlight, lemongrass isn’t a photosensitive oil, and if lemon essential oil is steam-distilled rather than cold-pressed (Oui Fresh essential oils are cold-pressed) it can be used on the skin. So just make sure to note which one your lemon oil is and only spray on clothes if you don’t have a skin-safe lemon oil (which is an application method a lot of people prefer anyway if they are more sensitive to oils).

Nothing describes summer better than a good cookout! And what is a cookout without a good, quality steak and the perfect grilling recipe?
1. Thaw and acclimate the steak. For searing to occur, the proteins in steak need to be heated to at least 310°F. Tossing cold meat onto a hot grill lowers the temperature and can prevent a crust from forming, so it’s important that any frozen steaks are thawed completely before cooking.
2. Salt your steak 30-45 minutes before grilling. This causes the salt to draw moisture from within the steak up to the surface, where it dissolves the salt and creates a brine that gets reabsorbed into the steak where it breaks down tough connective tissues.
3. Oil the grate on the grill, not the steak. Use tongs and a paper towel dipped in vegetable oil to lube your grates.
4. Manage your heat well. Remember that your grill needs to be hot for your steak to get a good sear. But if it’s hot enough to cause your oil to smoke, it’s too hot.
5. Use the 60/40 rule. The best-tasting steaks are seared on both sides and cooked evenly in the middle. The simplest way to do that is to only flip your steak once. The 60/40 rule suggests that 60% of your cook time should be spent on one side, and 40% on the other.
6. Keep the lid closed. It may be tempting to peek, but trust the experts and keep it shut! Opening the lid makes your grill lose heat, which makes steaks cook unevenly.
7. Check for doneness. A meat thermometer will give you the most accurate temperature reading:
• Rare: 120°F
• Medium Rare: 130°F
• Medium: 140°F
• Medium Well: 150°F
• Well: 160°F
8. Let your steak rest. Pull your steaks from the grill once they’re cooked to 5-10 degrees below your target temperature and rest for 10-15 minutes.
