The Nature of Exploration “We don’t inherit the earth from our ancestors, we borrow it from our children. -Chief Seattle Pondering this bit of wisdom, I realize the gravity of the responsibility we have to be great stewards of our planet. Chief Seattle’s perspective transcends small, linear thinking, taking a much grander view that enables us to see how no one really “owns” the Earth. The humility driving this perspective really hit home, no pun intended. If we view the Earth as a treasure that has been borrowed from our own children, what influence could that have on how we treat it? I’ve heard people say things like “treat this space as if it were yours” in reference to public land use. But I’ve also seen how people use their own property, so I’m not sure that’s the best advice. Chief Seattle’s perspective forces us to think beyond ourselves, and consider future generations enjoying land and resources they could not have earned. Yet, these things have been cherished, thus inspiring them to “pay it forward” as well. With that humble mindset, exploration could lead to a healthy level of respect, inspiring responsible use and conservation of resources we have been blessed with. I hope that this fun and unique issue of Broomfield Lifestyle inspires you to get out, explore, and find ways to pay it forward. Now get outside!

“Mom, are we there yet?” “Dad, I can’t get cell service!” “Uh, did we just miss our turn?” Ah, summertime in Colorado! So many things to explore (and complaints to hear). The time is near! You also know how stressful it can be to pull all the gear together, get on the road and make it to your destination, all in one piece and with minimal yelling and stress. And possibly without cell reception to have a map guide the way. To make things a little less stressful, have your vehicle serviced before you head out on your first trip exploring or to the first soccer tournament of the summer. Eric and Erika Gibson, owners of 5th Gear Automotive, explore Colorado in the summer and also shuttle kids to soccer and dance, so they understand the stress. “We may not be able to prevent all fights, but if you have your vehicle serviced before you head out, we can at least prevent fighting about the vehicle,” Eric laughs. Eric and Erika, their 13-year-old daughter and 16-year-old son, and the family’s boxers, Todd and Stella, enjoy getting out as much as they can. This usually means camping in their camper trailer in Colorado or Nebraska at least once, if not twice a month. Their

favorite spot is Blue Mesa Reservoir west of Gunnison. They enjoy renting boats, watching the dogs swim and star gazing at night. Eric and Erika, both from northern California, grew up camping, and oftentimes a boat was included. Erika camped with her grandparents, and Eric’s parents were members of a boat club on an island that was only accessible by boat. Given that they both had outdoor experiences growing up, Eric and Erika wanted their kids to experience camping too. And part of that experience is preparation— food, clothing, water and your vehicle (and camper, ATV, etc.). Just like preparing your vehicle for winter conditions, you also need to prepare it for summer conditions. While you may not want to spend the money or time to have a pre-trip inspection done, it’s not a lot of money and hassle compared to having a problem in the middle of nowhere with no cell service. “A pre-trip inspection is really important.” Eric said. He added, “At the beginning of summer, everyone is excited to get out and enjoy the mountains or get to that soccer tournament early to explore. But you may not be going anywhere if your vehicle isn’t prepared.” CONTINUED >

This is especially true for “lot rots”—vehicles that sit outside for extended periods of time without being driven. “You can’t expect to attach a lot rot to your camper and take off for your first summer outing. The tires may have rotted or you may have a family of rabbits that chewed through your wire compartment (now made of soy—an animal’s dream).” Eric continues, “So leave your vehicle maintenance worries to us—you have enough stress trying to remember enough hamburger buns and dog food for your outing or getting your child to the game on time with their shin guards. Leave your vehicle to us, so you can focus on the good times.”

ERIC’S TIPS FOR A STRESS-FREE SUMMER... EXPLORING

Pre-trip inspection recommendations for vehicles that will be towing or on remote or rugged roads in summer (lot rots included): • Inspect tires and wheels • Inspect belts and hoses • Check all your fluids – the engine, coolant, oil and rear differential (for pickups to tow). Eric calls this the “drive-line service” • Brakes and rotors

AROUND TOWN Inspection recommendations for vehicles around town, getting you to work, soccer games, etc.: • Oil change • General inspection (belts, tires, hoses and brakes) • General maintenance Eric adds some helpful tips before you have your vehicle serviced. “If possible, please run your car through the wash before you bring it in.” He adds, “And clean off any spaces that we might need to access, like in the back of your vehicle. We’d rather not rummage through your belongings looking for a wheel lock, and we’re sure you’d agree,” he laughs.

THE INSIDE What can you do to take care of your vehicle’s insides? They can take a beating with sun, heat, sand, wet towels, firewood, forgotten food and smelly soccer socks: • Wash your car every 1-2 weeks (Yes! This helps the inside!) • Add an air freshener to combat summer smells • Cleaning your cabin air filter, given that mold spores, dust and pollution collect in the filter • Cleaning your air ducts (which is often done when you have the air filter cleaned) to optimize your HVAC’s system, increasing its efficiency and air flow And his #1 tip? “Get rid of your carpet floor mats and get ones made with thermoplastic, like WeatherTech. They’ll protect your car much better than carpet.” He adds, “And clean them every time you wash your car.” Now that you know to include a pre-trip inspection before you head out this summer, have fun exploring!

As the world slowly begins to open up after the pandemic, people are itching if not outright catapulting themselves back into the world of travel. “Bon Voyage!”, our hearts cry as we search up exotic locations, fine foods, and infinity pools. For many, travel is not only a way to escape the monotony of everyday life but also an opportunity to experience new cultures, meet new people, and create lifelong memories. Planning For Pollinators Pollinators are animals that transport pollen from one flowering plant to another of the same species, supporting successful seed and fruit production. There are thousands of pollinators in Colorado from bumblebees to soldier beetles to butterflies. Many pollinators, such as honeybees, are key parts of our food system, bringing us delicious food such as chocolate and fruit. Our wild pollinators ensure that our meadows, wetlands, and forests support the processes that keep these ecosystems (and us!) alive. Yet, a staggering forty percent of pollinators in North America are at risk of extinction. With declines in global insect populations, protecting pollinators, and all invertebrates, animals without backbones, is even more critical today. Now it is our turn to help them, so they can continue to help us. This is where Butterfly Pavilion plays a key role. As the first Association of Zoos and Aquariums-accredited, stand-alone, non-profit invertebrate zoo in the world, and a leader in invertebrate research, conservation, and education, Butterfly Pavilion is uniquely positioned to apply our expertise on pollinators to help protect these incredibly important creatures. Our science team works all over the world to improve pollinator habitat, from Sumatran rainforests to the dry coasts of Turks and Caicos to the prairies and mountains of Colorado. Butterfly Pavilion’s Pollinator District program works with communities to conserve and improve pollinator habitat. Our first Pollinator District, located in the home development of Baseline in Broomfield, is where Butterfly Pavilion’s new stateof-the-art facility will be built. The Pollinator District has already shown an increase of pollinators where new habitat was planted just three years ago. Flower-rich pollinator landscapes support greater biodiversity and climate resilience, supporting pollinators and other beneficial animals. No matter who you are, you benefit from the work of pollinators, and no matter who you are, you can make sure that these animals survive. CREATE A POLLINATOR HABITAT WHERE YOU LIVE. If you plant it, they will come! Including native flowering plants in your existing garden or removing unused turf to plant a pollinator meadow provides food for pollinators. Even adding a few blooming pots to your patio can connect smaller flowering patches to larger habitats. Many pollinators also require plants that provide shelter and space to raise their young, so planting swaths of native grasses and shrubs adds the protection they need. Finally, reducing your chemical use results in healthier spaces for these vulnerable animals. And once you have transformed your own landscape, why not get your neighbors on board?

Many assume that they cater exclusively to people interested in growing their own marijuana plants at home. On the contrary, their primary focus is enhancing overall wellness and lifestyle by growing nutrient-dense organic produce. Acme Hydroponics is locally owned/operated by Jason and Kristen Pozzi. Jason grew up with a corporate background in food service and produce, while Kristen grew up on a farm, seeing the process of where her food was coming from. Together, they have owned/operated Acme Hydroponics for 13 years. The business and gardening has become something enjoyable for the whole family. “Our kids love gardening,” Kristen says. “There is something about them being a part of the entire process, then eating that first tomato straight from the plant they grew. I think the idea applies just as much to adults when they first get started, which is what makes our job so fun.” Starting a garden indoors and then transplanting outside is a very popular and beneficial option here in Colorado, where the prime growing months aren’t as long as they are in other areas of the country. Giving plants a strong beginning with rich soil and proper temperatures can help them thrive later. Hydroponics, a process done entirely indoors, refers to growing without soil through nutrient-treated water and a process of cycling oxygen through a plant’s root system. Though the concept may sound foreign, it is actually very simple- providing plants exactly what they need and when they need them. If you’re curious, yet perhaps overwhelmed with the idea, starting with a small kitchen herb garden is a great way to dip your toes into hydroponics. Whether it be indoors or outdoors, using soil or water only, the Pozzis are readily available to help answer questions and help others grow healthy foods for themselves and their families. They grow the seedlings that are sold in their store with the same seeds they use in their own garden, which is also tended to by their children.

Where do I begin? Four tips for those hoping to try out their own green thumbs:

1 | Where did your plants or seeds originate? Asking this question is similar to checking the labels on the foods you buy. Non-GMO, organic, and heirloom seeds will ensure a healthier, more flavorful harvest. Start with growing crops that you and your family enjoy eating.

2 | Invest in your soil The ideal environment for plants to thrive includes a nutrient-rich organic soil. For existing garden beds, opt for enhancing your soil further with dry amendments like compost and worm castings. Healthy soil= healthy plants.

3 | Location, location, location The placement is crucial, as the amount of sun a plant gets will determine its fate. South-facing gardens are optimal, and raised garden beds are an easier way to go with Colorado’s dense, clay-like soil.

4 | Water as needed Drip systems can be helpful to avoid overwatering or underwatering. An organic mulch around plants will help prevent soil from drying out quickly, suppress weeds, and help maintain more consistent soil temperatures.
