Artificial lawns aren’t what they used to be. Contractor Michael Stampfler sees them firsthand as he and his team are able to produce a low-maintenance, tranquil and eco-friendly lawn — made of synthetic grass. “It’s changed a lot in the last 10 to 15 years,” says Stampfler. Artificial lawns are among several trends Stampfler has noticed in the area since he launched his general contracting company Transblue Boulder in March 2022. He also has had many requests for pergolas, decks, and electric vehicle charging stations. “One of our favorite requests is a full landscape design,” he says. “We’ll go to the nurseries with you to help you pick out your ideal plants and flowers based on what's best for your design and location.” After a successful first year with more than 40 clients and around 100 projects, Stampfler is eager for another year of transforming homes and businesses.

“My background is in the Navy,” he says. Stampfler, who is still a reservist, spent eight of his 15 Naval years in active duty in San Diego, Guatemala, Columbia, and Trinidad and Tobago — mainly as a Naval diplomat. Stampfler then spent some time in the corporate world before he decided to start his own company. He researched over 100 different business ideas and landed on contract work. He and his wife chose Colorado as a starting point, and moved to Frederick. He chose Broomfield for his business’ headquarters. “Colorado was a no-brainer,” he says. “There’s a lot of growth opportunities.” Stampfler hired Erick Kennedy, who was born and raised in Broomfield and had an extensive construction background, as his director of operations. “Our value proposition is to bring tailored solutions to our customers,” says Stampfler. “Anything a customer asks about, Erick’s got those answers.”

Transblue is best for people who have a list of projects they’d like done for their home or business, Stampfler says. “If someone only wants a new driveway, there’s plenty of companies to call for that,” he says. “But if someone wants multiple projects, we can make it all come together in a package deal. We’re going to be talking to our customer every day.” Many of Stampfler’s customers often come to Transblue seeking help for projects that are halfway completed and need a fix. “People have heard all these horror stories of bad contractors,” he says. “We are trying to fight against that trend and do really well for our customers.” Last summer, Jill Ring of Westminster had Transblue manage the complete renovation of her outside property to help save money on her water bill. The teams xeriscaped her entire front yard after tearing out the existing lawn. In the backyard, Transblue helped facilitate the rebuilding of two decks, the removal of grass, the installation of artificial grass and the rebuilding and restabilizing of the property gates. The entire process was complete in three weeks, Ring says. “Every team member was so friendly and honestly went above and beyond for us,” she says. “Their staff has followed up via email, text messages, and phone calls even post-installation.”

Ring now saves the money she wanted on water, and enjoys her new yard. “The deck is beautiful and we love sitting outside to enjoy our beautiful low maintenance yard,” she says. Rikki Gilbert had her entire Boulder yard redone by Transblue in 2022. “I’ve been working with Transblue for about a month and they have done about seven years of work on my house,” she says in a video testimonial. The unknown aspects of a project — from long permitting processes, engineering hurdles and supply issues — are what people need to be most aware of when planning outdoor construction, says Stampfler. And having expectations that things with your project will change. “It can be 50% longer and 50% more expensive than what you really think,” he says. “Getting the right information up front from someone you trust is very useful.” As spring picks up, Stampfler expects things to book quickly, especially in the Broomfield area. “Get your name on a list now.”

When Michelle Lewis’s kids showed her TikTok videos touting amazing garage makeovers, she asked her husband about doing their own. “We were tired of our garage always being a mess,” says Lewis, who lives in western Arvada. A co-worker connected her with Travis Sagrillo in May 2022, who had launched his company, Hello Garage, with his wife, Lee Strickler, in December of 2021. “Travis came and gave us a no-pressure bid, and we decided to have him do the work right then and there,” says Lewis.

After Lewis and her family purged junk in their garage and stored the rest of their things in a neighbor’s enclosed trailer, Sagrillo and his Hello Garage team got to work installing a polyaspartic floor coating, which treats and protects the concrete floor in addition to making it look clean and fresh. “When I first saw it, I didn’t want to park any cars on it,” says Lewis. “My husband loves that he can just squeegee out the snow.” Often clients start with getting their floor redone, then decide it’s time for a new storage system for all of their gear and tools. “Not only are we showing up at someone's home to provide a service, but I help them find the places to put things — whether it’s the garden tools, the skis, the kayaks,” says Sagrillo, who decided to launch the Broomfield-based franchise after organizing his own garage. Sagrillo and his team specialize in the polyaspartic flooring, but also offer organization advice and install cabinets, hanging racks, shelving and slat walls. Everything is done in a day or two on average, Sagrillo says. “The garage is often the first place a person goes before entering their home, but the last place that ever gets thought of,” he says. Customers are often so grateful for help in a space that becomes a giant catch-all for sports equipment, tools and holiday boxes, he explains. “They find out that they have more room than they ever had,” says Sagrillo. “They have this energy of ‘I’m going to keep this clean.’”

Spirit week at BSLS. Mrs. Acker and student matched on crazy hat day

Why families love BSLS… On March 11, Beautiful Savior Lutheran School and Early Learning Center (BSLS) — which opened in 1980 and is located near 120th Ave. and Main Street in Broomfield — will hold its 19th-annual auction to raise $25,000 for the school and its students, who range from infants to sixth grade. In preparation for the big event, Sonya Acker, principal, director and kindergarten teacher, and Sami White, assistant director and pre-kindergarten teacher, talk here about their school and what makes their BSLS community a family.

WHAT ARE BOTH OF YOUR HISTORIES WITH BSLS? Sonya Acker: I have been here for 15 years, which is my entire teaching career. I have taught from preschool all the way up to second grade at very different levels. Sami White: I’m actually a product of Beautiful Savior. I started going here when I was in second grade. I started volunteering in 2014, and I’ve been working here since.

WHAT’S YOUR FAVORITE TIME OF DAY WHILE AT WORK?

WHAT WOULD YOU SAY IS THE BEST ASPECT OF BSLS? SW: We create relationships with our families. Being able to support everyone and, in turn, our families try their best to support us too.

WHAT IS UNIQUE ABOUT BSLS? SA: The low student-to-teacher ratios. The kids are getting more one-on-one support which is — in this day and age — huge. We may have, say, a third grader who is really strong at math and sciences so they may be working up with our fifth and sixth graders. But maybe they’re not quite there with their reading, so they’ll either stay with their reading group or maybe they’ll go down a little bit with their reading. We try to push our kiddos where they’re at.

SW: It is our biggest fundraiser of the year that we do for our school. We seek donations and help from businesses in our community, in our state and some out of state. Our auction items include a lot of great experiences or things like gift cards. We include our students in everything we do. Every classroom will collect items for a themed basket to donate to the auction, and the kids in each class will make a class art project.

HOW DO THE PROCEEDS BENEFIT BSLS? SW: The auction itself usually goes towards our annual budget so we can provide quality Christian education for our students. Another thing we do in our auction is a special appeal — every year we’ll have something very specific and very special that we’re trying to raise money for. That’s gone towards technology throughout the school for teachers and students for instance. One year we completely re-floored the entire school.

SA: Because I wear a lot of different hats here, for me it’s being in the classroom and working one on one with the kids. That’s what takes me into the building. SW: One of my favorite things is being able to work in a school where we can teach about Jesus and faith.

Where’s Your Place In the World? My favorite freelance assignments involve hearing stories from those who have spent a lifetime in their communities. Still relatively new to Broomfield, I had yet to meet Linda Deland and couldn’t have fathomed the experience that was about to unfold. We scheduled a meeting at Ziggi’s, one of her favorite local coffee shops. She immediately hugged me like we’d been friends for years. It was one of those hugs that makes you feel like you belong… like you’re a part of something. As we walked together to the

counter her countenance struck me with warmth. Her eyes were kind as she looked directly at me and asked how I was doing. It wasn’t chit chat. I could tell she meant it. She really wanted to know. She insisted on buying me breakfast and sincerely engaged the barista by name. I was transported back in time to the feel of a small town. We grab a table. Our conversation starts by acknowledging her husband Tom, whom I had read about and researched to be ready for our meeting.

As the wife of a highly visible hometown hero she gracefully told their story. It had been one year since his unexpected passing, an event that not only upended her world, but the community around her. Her face lights up as she talks with deep, authentic love about the Broomfield that first welcomed her back in 1975. She remembers arriving. The mountains. The blue sky. The original, iconic “Heart of Broomfield” sign posted just off 287 as you pulled into the city. The years would show just how much this community would become her home. We move on to talk more about her. Linda has had two careers as a real estate agent. Her first stint began when she was in her 30’s. Her strength and success, rooted in her love for Broomfield, helped people not just find homes, but find their place in a unique, growing and fast-changing city. Her husband's promotion to Chief of Police intercepted Linda’s career and placed her into roles that would unknowingly plant the seeds for her current season in life. Linda put a pause on real estate and pointed her passion home toward her husband, her family, and her community. Alongside Tom, she became deeply involved in making Broomfield a truly special place. When Tom retired after 37 years of service to his community (23 of those years as Chief

of Police), Linda knew she had unfinished business in real estate. In 2014 she got her second real estate license and jumped back in with a big splash, embracing the tag line, “Broomfield’s Realtor.” For years people had been calling her to see if she was still in the business. Why? Because her clients had become her hometown friends. “Broomfield is a very loyal community,” she says, “but it’s an earned loyalty. When real estate goes beyond the transaction, it draws you into a relationship.” With this approach, everybody wins. I can tell as we are talking that, like many in her profession, Linda leads with excellence, but what makes her unique is the way she also leads with her whole heart. More than 90% of Linda’s real estate transactions happen in Broomfield for a reason. She is serving the community she loves. I peek over at her web site and scroll through pages of reviews supporting just how much Linda understands each of her client’s stories, touted as always being willing to listen and take the reins. As she continues to speak, Linda’s face lights up again, now narrating her readiness to live large, be more, and serve more. She is the proof that shows not only is your home your safe haven, your community is. A season that forced her to find her new place in the world unleashed a passion to help others truly know the same. Ready to be vulnerable, she wants to give people the opportunity to know who she really is. Just Linda. “The way real estate trends are heading with all of the technology, everything has become so automated and transactional. I don’t like that..” she sighs. “I enjoy investing myself in others, intentionally listening to their stories and discovering what’s important to them. It encourages people to relax and it gives me the opportunity to learn how I can best help.”

What’s next? Taking the helm, Linda has a vision for bringing people together, starting conversations, and embracing new seasons. She’s ready to put herself out there. “Broomfield is growing,” she says. “It is an interesting time here. The old is established, and the new is expanding… fast. I want to be here for it all, drawing in people from both sides. I want to use my roots and connections to preserve our small town feel while creating a welcoming space and place for the people who haven’t grown up here.” We wrap up our interview with another hug and a commitment for our paths to cross again. Our engagement left me feeling like I’m now not only a part of her circle, but an important part of what is happening here in Broomfield. The truth is, to Linda, we all are.
