Broomfield has some unique treasures, but it’s hard to get more “local” than Don Woodard. This Broomfield High School graduate has called Broomfield “home” since 1959. Don is one of the most authentic people you will find in this community, and getting to know him is as easy as walking into Life in the West Art Gallery. Not only will you experience his vision of beautiful art, but also the expertly crafted work of many other local artists. As the name of his article on this issue suggests, when you visit Don, be ready for a great story or two ;O) Just minutes from Life in the West Art Gallery, find more “local vibes” when you walk into Monkton Guitars and say hi to Dave Williams. He opened his shop in Broomfield’s former post office in 2019. Playing music is a very personal, creative experience, so getting hands-on is the best way to find the perfect instrument. Williams has created the ideal environment for visitors to learn and connect with instruments by trying them out right there in the store. Check out the whole story in this issue! Loving your community means knowing your community, which is why anyone that calls this place “home” should know something about the very first non-profit to be established in Broomfield; Bal Swan Children’s Center. A core belief of the families and leaders who were forming Broomfield back in the 1960s was that all people have value, regardless of their ability. Bal Swan Children’s Center exists to help instill that core value in our youngest citizens. A key event supporting that mission is Broomfield’s longest-standing black tie event, the Bal Swan Ball. This year, the event takes place on February 25th at the Omni Interlocken hotel. Read the full story in this issue to learn more about the mission and impact they have on our local community. One of Broomfield’s newest local businesses has teamed up with us this month for a special promo. Keep an eye out for a “downward dog” hidden somewhere in the pages of this issue. Spot him, scan the corresponding QR code, and enjoy a fun video message from one of our partners. Now let’s show Broomfield some local love this month (and every month)! GOING OLD SCHOOL AT MONKTON GUITARS
DAVID WILLIAMS HELPS CUSTOMERS EXPERIENCE A 1970S-LIKE FEEL WHEN SHOPPING FOR AN INSTRUMENT. When professional drummer Christian Teele needed a hobby to help him escape his daily grind, he turned to guitar. “Guitar has filled that need for me to be able to enjoy music purely for the fun and joy of it,” said Teele, who, in addition to recording specialized songs for people around the world, serves as the house drummer for Boulder’s eTown band for about 25 years. Eager to find a used guitar, he recalled an eTown acquaintance of his, David Williams, who had opened a guitar shop in Broomfield called Monkton Guitars. “I got in my car and headed over to Monkton, thankful for the existence of a good local shop,” said Teele, who lives in Lafayette. “I arrived and was immediately taken in with the relaxed, casual atmosphere at the shop.” He’s since bought three guitars and a few pedals from Monkton stating, "I'm grateful to have Dave and other experts so close to home."

Teele’s experience at Monkton Guitars is exactly what Williams hopes for. “I want it to be like the stores I used to go in in the 1970s,” said Williams, who grew up on Long Island, New York, and whose interest for collecting guitars began in high school. Williams went to concerts nearly every weekend as a teenager and reveled in visiting the New York guitar store Sam Ash. “At 15 years old I walked into the door and walked right into [Led Zeppelin’s] Jimmy Page and Robert Plant,” he said. “That got me addicted to the whole thing.” Williams first started buying and selling used guitars with a friend as a side business in the late 1980s when he lived in Monkton, Maryland. He worked in engineering full-time. When he moved to Boulder in 1997 to work at Ball Aerospace, he ran his guitar business out of his home. He started volunteering with eTown to get connected to the local music scene, a gig that’s lasted for 25 years.

“For me, a guitar is not a piece of hardware with specs that you view and purchase online,” he said. “It is an instrument that funnels a person’s creative energy and is a very personal buying experience.”

In 2017, Williams and his wife lost their son to suicide. Williams decided it was time to take his life in a new direction. In 2019 he retired from his director position at CenturyLink, and opened his brick-andmortar guitar store in the old post office, off of 1st Ave. and Marble Street in Broomfield. He hoped people would feel comfortable and welcome in such a historical building while visiting Monkton. “For me, a guitar is not a piece of hardware with specs that you view and purchase online,” he said. “It is an instrument that funnels a person’s creative energy and is a very personal buying experience.” Williams’ shop sells more than 200 vintage, used and new guitars, along with amps, effects and accessories, as well as some bass guitars, mandolins, ukuleles and banjos. Guitar lessons and repairs also occur in his shop, which has gained a strong following of customers eager for a local experience. He also helps refurbish and donate guitars and basses to donate to local schools and other nonprofit music groups. Mostly, Williams is hoping to create a memorable experience for each person that walks into his shop. “My goal is to find the customer the right instrument, so they are motivated to play and enjoy it,” he said. Williams recalled a set of parents who brought their son in on Christmas Eve last year to pick out a guitar as a gift. The whole family listened to him play a variety of guitars as he narrowed down his perfect instrument. They laughed and had a wonderful time, he said. Williams added: “He got the one he wanted.” Monkton Guitars is located at 1505 W 1st Ave, STE A in Broomfield. The shop is a strong supporter of the nonprofit RISE Against Suicide, which helps young people financially and socially who at risk for suicide. Visit monktonguitars.com for more information.

Don Woodard Carves a Story into Every Work of Art

It was early in the morning on the second day of the International Sportsmen's Expo in Denver. The exhibit hall wasn’t open to the public yet. A woman waited quietly, alone in the artist’s booth whom she had met the day before. She had been here, carefully examining the wood carvings, admiring their intricacies, 3-dimensional nature, and all the stories they told. It was the small sign that caught her eye. Art could be commissioned.
Could this medium be the perfect piece for her project? She left with no further discussion, excited. With thought of what was possible in her head, she had a hard time sleeping and returned the next day with her vision and her request. Unaware, the artist made his way back through the exhibit hall, ready for another full day of customers and conversations. As he approached his booth he saw the familiar woman waiting for him.
She explained her admiration for his art, her restless night, and her request… a four-foot wide carving of The Last Supper to adorn the entryway of her new home. Could he do it? Don Woodard moved away from Indiana with his family in December of 1959, and was one of the first 1000 families to settle in the small, budding community of Broomfield, Colorado. After graduating from Broomfield High School, he began his collegiate CONTINUED > FEB R UARY 2 0 2 3 | C I TYL I FE STYL E . C OM/BR O O M F I E L D

studies at CU Boulder. Don found art as a form of expression his Junior year in college, finding a particular passion for commercial art, long before the days of CAD. He enjoyed hand drawing each intricate detail of a commercial or architectural design. Unfortunately, CU didn’t offer degrees in commercial design, so he took the art-focused coursework available to him and graduated with a degree in fine art. After college, he couldn’t find a job. Resourceful, he began racing cars during the summer as a way to make money. Don remembers a day racing when he paused to watch the sign painters lettering the race cars. He figured, “I can do that!” and began to practice lettering the cars in the local junkyard to perfect this new trade and open his own sign company, a moment that launched Don into a lifetime career of leadership and entrepreneurship, all with a common thread of art and design. Don was first intrigued by wood carving during a visit to Silver Dollar City, an amusement park in southern Missouri. While exploring the theme park he happened upon a wood carving studio. The detail and skill on display was impressive to him, so much so that after a short conversation with the artist, he decided to purchase a set of tools to try his hand at the craft. He returned home, back to his busy life and those wood carving tools sat, unused on a closet shelf. Twenty-five years later, as Don was unwinding in front of the TV, he became bored. Often drawn toward the process of creating and creativity, Don dusted off his wood carving tools and headed off to the garage determined to, “try and carve some wood”. Picking a photo from one of his passions, the backcountry pack-horse trips he would lead, Don began to carve. Happy with this first attempt, and recognizing the path of mastery, Don dedicated himself to the practice of carving, and for about twelve years he carved many pieces that pleased his audiences. From landscapes to wildlife to the challenge of carving faces and the emotions that go with them, Don’s used the details of his carvings to tell stories, bringing to life his adventures of getting lost deep in the wilderness with his horses surrounded by nature's canvas. Which brings us full circle to the moment in the art booth, and the commissioned work, The Last Supper. “Her request set me back for a moment,” said Don, “could I actually carve The Last Supper?” At that moment, he just didn’t know. He went home to research as much as he could about Da

Vinci's original painting and found many many creations by a great number of artists all with their own versions. He found himself ready to make his own interpretation of the piece, and accepted the project. Slowly and with great detail, Don carved, sculpting his version of one of the most famous stories ever told. “I have to admit however, that I was a bit nervous when finishing the carving, because the last person I carved was Jesus, and I was praying that I wouldn’t make the mistake of cutting off his nose!” One of his most labor intensive and significant works, his client was very pleased with the outcome. So was Don. Life in the West Art Gallery is Don Woodard’s career capstone. In retirement, his focus has now turned not only to his passion for telling his own stories through woodcarving, but giving a voice for other artists to tell their stories as well.
Don’s newest carving project is a set of miniature pieces he calls the “Critter Series”, to include a grizzly, a mountain lion, and the famous Colorado mountain goat. His one-of-a-kind gallery opened in Broomfield in January of 2022 with the goal of showcasing nationally recognized artists, and equally amazing local artists, to the Front Range community. In addition to his own work, Life in the West Art Gallery highlights many different styles and mediums of artwork from Traditional to Contemporary with a focus on telling the story of what “Life in the West” is all about. With the hopes of hosting 3-4 national shows in 2023, Don looks forward to bringing people together to share their experiences. “Every piece of art has a story behind it, and the story is often more exciting than the art.”

Miss Marlene sharing the Love with a Bal Swan Student

EDU CAT ION COR N E R | LI F E + CULTURE
1970s Bal Swan classroom
Bal Swan Children’s Center is a nationally recognized early childhood center in Broomfield. As the first non-profit in Broomfield, established in 1963, the children’s center allowed Broomfield residents to rally behind a cause for which they cared deeply. Bal Swan Children’s Center led the way in nonprofit leadership and philanthropy in Broomfield, allowing the community to pour their hearts and pocketbooks into supporting a place that celebrates the dignity, value and worth of ALL children. In the early 1960s, when Broomfield was a burgeoning community, families were working to create a community culture that reflected their beliefs. One of the shared beliefs was that all people in our community have value, regardless of their ability. Nothing reflects this shared belief more than the origin of Bal Swan Children’s Center. Five Broomfield couples became parents to children with disabilities. Their children were denied a public preschool education. With passion and purpose, these Broomfield families created a foundation to support education for children with disabilities, hired a teacher, and found a space for their schooling. With the help of the community, the Boulder Valley School District and a wonderful woman who agreed to be their teacher, Miss Marlene, the foundation created an educational home for young children with disabilities. During the schooling, Miss Marlene discovered something profound at that time–children with disabilities achieved greater developmental progress when learning together with their neurotypical peers. When the world dismissed them, their same-aged friends said “We want to be your friend.”
Miss Marlene and a Bal Swan Alum
What Miss Marlene discovered anecdotally, the world now knows empirically–children are highly motivated by one another and have the inherent empathy and compassion to be accepting and encouraging friends to people of all abilities. By the late 1960s, Miss Marlene was advocating for a permanent location to be built to serve her young students. Two community philanthropists–Mr. Bal Swan and Mr. Fred Spallone, graciously gave money and land to build the current Bal Swan Children’s Center building. The school is a cornerstone in the Northmoor Park neighborhood, bringing stability, accessibility and children’s joy and exuberance to the neighborhood. As Bal Swan Children’s Center became rooted in the community, they also created innovative ways to raise money for the center and raise awareness of the value of educating children in an inclusive environment. The annual Bal Swan Ball, now in its 59th year, was the first black tie fundraising event in Broomfield and remains a beloved evening out for adults in the community today. Through the years, Broomfield businesses such as Sill Terhar Motors, Varra Companies, A-One Chipseal, Hunter Douglas and the Spallone family have been presenting sponsors for the Bal Swan Ball. Other local businesses have purchased tables and raised their paddles in support of Bal Swan Children’s Center’s mission. The 2023 Bal Swan Ball, “Our Future in Bloom,” will showcase the high quality work occurring at Bal Swan and also share the vision for growth. The Bal Swan Board of Directors has voted to raise funds to modernize the building to adapt to 21st century learning needs and licensing regulations. Bal Swan Children’s Center will serve children and families beginning at birth and will stay with them through the child’s completion of the 5th grade.
Seating for Success: Classroom Circle Time at Bal Swan

When the world dismissed them, their sameaged friends said “We want to be your friend.”
Inclusive classrooms will be the center of the new school, along with robust pediatric therapy offerings and parent education. Bal Swan Children’s Center will be a beacon of hope for families–a place where they feel supported and loved and cherished as people with potential–not defined by their ability but defined by their belonging to a supportive, nurturing community. Every Business Owner Needs A Team Of Trusted Advisors ARTICLE BY AARON RASK & DAVE MANLEY | PHOTOGRAPHY BY SARAH DAWN PHOTOGRAPHY

F IN A N CIA L BU Z Z | FIN ANCE + LE GAL S E RVI CE S
If you’re a business owner, you are used to wearing a lot of hats. Still, you can’t be an expert at everything, which is why it’s important to build a network of trusted professionals that you can turn to for help whenever the need arises. No matter how successful you are, there are plenty of reasons to establish a professional network. In addition to exchanging contacts and referrals, there’s also the opportunity to share ideas and receive free advice from specialists in their field. And, much like getting a second opinion on a medical procedure, your network can act as a system of checks and balances by making sure you weigh all your options.
ASK YOURSELF: Whom should you invite to be part of your network? While the members may vary depending on your strengths and weaknesses, your team should probably include some or all of the following professionals*:
ATTORNEY: Unless you have in-house council or a legal background yourself, an attorney-especially one with some experience in your industry is almost a necessity. Among other things, an attorney can help defend you and your company from potential lawsuits, review contracts, and help with succession planning. ACCOUNTANT: While most people only use their accountant during tax season, business
owners will find that an ongoing relationship can save them money in the long run. Not only can an accountant keep you from running afoul of the IRS, they can also show you how to structure your business and become a more tax-efficient operation.
BANKER/FINANCIER: As we all know, cash flow is the lifeblood of any business. And in today’s restrictive lending environment, having a banker in your corner can be a real boon. By providing easy access to credit, or letting you hear about the most favorable rates, a banker can be an invaluable addition to your team. INSURANCE AGENT: A professional insurance agent can help you prepare for a number of critical business issues. Specifically, an insurance agent can help your business overcome the loss of a key employee, enhance your executive benefit package, fund a buysell agreement, and protect your family’s future by insuring your business interests. As you can see, there are a host of advantages to creating a network of professionals with expertise in their field. Best of all, it’s a winwin for all parties, so setting one up may be easier than you think. *NEITHER NEW YORK LIFE INSURANCE COMPANY, NOR ITS AGENTS, PROVIDES TAX, LEGAL, OR ACCOUNTING ADVICE.

ELEVATE YOUR CLOSET 8 WAYS TO O R G A N I Z E A N D
Every woman dreams of an organized and beautiful closet space, but it often comes last on the list of places that get their time and attention. Follow our eight tips for transforming and elevating your closet as you Spring clean and declutter for a more peaceful, inspired space you absolutely love. A sneak peek inside the closet of active mom and entrepreneur Keri Tarantino of Leawood, KS reveals a dressing room that rivals celebrity homes in Beverly Hills. But it didn’t come easily. Keri painstakingly planned, designed and curated the space with care. When we first stepped inside, we gasped as our eyes beheld the glory. No detail went unnoticed in this dreamy dressing room. Here are some guiding principles that can be drawn from her exquisite taste and vision. How you organize your closet will of course differ based on the size of your space, the size of your wardrobe, and the kind of life you lead. But applying the guidelines Keri used in her space will result in a much more organized and aesthetically pleasing space.
USE R EAL ESTATE W ISELY Reserve the front and middle of the closet for clothes worn most often. For someone who gets dressed for work each morning at 6 a.m., work clothes should be at the front of the closet. Store lesser-worn items like formal wear and out-of-season clothes toward the back and on the upper shelves. The large mirror and counter with chair provides the perfect spot to select jewelry and finalize finishing outfit touches. While every closet is different, the key here is everything has a home.

Group clothes by kind first and color second. This ensures quick location of that favorite shirt when it’s needed. Bonus - it’s easy on the eye. Group like with like: Gather belts, sweaters, long-sleeve shirts, work pants, dresses, button-down shirts, jeans, shorts, etc., and decide the best place to store each item as a group (e.g., hang pants in the closet, fold and stack sweaters in a bureau). Working with groupings will help you figure out how much space you need and the best way to store each type of item.
03 04 NEGATIVE SPACE
Using space efficiently is important, but keep in mind every good design includes some negative space. For instance, consider adding built-ins on the long wall of your closet but keep the short wall open with a mirror.
FACE CLOTHES THE SA ME DIR ECTION
It may seem silly, but when dealing with a small space, little things count. Hanging all clothes the same direction is a no-brainer for continuity in your closet.
BAG & SHOE STOR AGE Alternate the way shoes are facing. This ultimately helps fit more on each row and provide a visually appealing way to display those prized possessions. Everyone understands the frustration of searching for that one clutch when rushing out for the evening. Bags benefit from a space all their own. Get clear container storage for small bags and purses so you can locate and access them easily. CONTINUED > FEB R UARY 2 0 2 3 | C I TYL I FE STYL E . C OM/BR O O M F I E L D

UPGR ADED HA NGERS The simplest and fastest way to make a BIG difference in your closet organization is to get matching hangers that go beyond the traditional plastic or wire hangers. And for sure ditch any with paper from the dry cleaner! Here’s a few of our favorite elevated hangers:
07 08 LIGHTING
Lighting is everything in a closet. Gone are the days of dim recessed lighting being sufficient. Consider adding a statement lighting fixture like a chandelier or pendant that provides ample bright lighting to your space, no matter how big or small.
M AK E A STATEMENT
Why use an armchair when you have room for a sofa? Slide up a stool and colorful area rug to complete the look. If you have excessive wall space, consider a mini gallery wall or a statement wall with wallpaper to polish things off.
