“There is no substitute for just getting yourself out there and doing something. You are needed, and your time and talents are invaluable!” I love this encouraging quote from Robbin Merta, a Broomfield local, friend, and philanthropist. I agree with her wholeheartedly, and when I think about what makes up the core of who Broomfield is, that sentiment really captures it! This is a community built of “doers.” From the first individuals and families that settled here to now, we are a community of active citizens. We are people who ask themselves things like “If not me, then who?” On that note, we’ve taken a step toward our community by launching a Giving Campaign, making it easy for you to nominate a person or family to receive an unexpected check in the mail this holiday season. Flip to The Giving Campaign article in this issue to learn more and submit your nomination! Lastly, bringing things close to home, I became a father over 6 years ago. I know, not a long time, but I’ve learned so much in this short period. One of the biggest lessons is this: the most valuable gift I can give my daughters doesn’t come from Amazon. It comes from me, carving out time just for them, every day. It comes from putting down the phone and picking them up. It’s not a gift given once or twice a year, but every single day. And the cost of this gift? It’s actually quite high, which is what makes it so valuable! The cost is TIME. Not one person knows when their individual hourglass will run out. But doesn’t it feel great when you know that someone could have spent their time doing virtually anything they wanted, but they CHOSE to spend some of it with you? Time passes the same for all of us, and nobody knows the remaining balance. Let that sink in, and let it impact you. Time is a gift. You can’t make more of it, but you can make less of it. How you choose to use it is what makes the greatest gift YOU.

Within minutes of chatting with Broomfield resident Robbin Merta, I’d noted the word ‘PASSIONATE’ in all caps. While I expected to first hear about the housing market, the local realtor started talking about holiday traditions, stained glass, and “How are you?”. Robbin is an artist, a mother and wife, a believer in making business enjoyable, and an unsung hero in our community when it comes to lending a hand.

Giving comes naturally to Robbin, especially when it comes to her family. She shares a creative spirit with her two daughters, who are a painter and musician. Robbin herself has been creating panels, mosaics, and jewelry for over 25 years. Several of her pieces can be found in nearby historic buildings and her own home, where you’ll also find a mural painted by one daughter and hints of a love of music throughout. Robbin describes her parenting style as “empowering.” She believes in supporting a child’s interest and letting them see what it can lead to, including creative outlets and hobbies. Her children were also encouraged to volunteer and seek ways to help others from a young age, especially during seasons when our brains are designed to only think of ourselves. “Helping others helps you get out of your own way. It teaches us to stop questioning ourselves and takes away the fear of walking into a new situation,” she says. How is this? “It’s not about you when you’re helping. You are making a difference and that’s what you think about.” Robbin's creative spirit pours over into her career. She believes there is truly no place like home, and finding the right one should be a multi-faceted approach. “Your home should feel like a sanctuary, but also your canvas,” she says. A part of her professional duties, she feels, is to help her clients visualize the potential of a home as they tour it — a look through the “possibilities lens” as she calls it. She loves getting to know her clients and stays in contact long after they close. Robbin will host events

with clients and friends a couple of times a year, which double as toy, coat, and school supply drives for local schools. These get-togethers have brought together neighbors who didn’t know each other before and are fun ways to give to good causes. Robbin’s love for homes started at a young age with LEGO sets followed by a fascination with the process of her parents building a home when she was a teen. She started in the real estate market as an admin before flipping a couple of houses and getting her license. The industry has never felt like tedious work to her, but more of a joy to share. “There is a danger in taking something you love and making it a chore. This way (referring to client relationships and fostering a love for the industry), it never has to!” Being a part of and contributing to the community is a constant for Robbin. This feel-good term ‘community’ is defined by Oxford as “a feeling of fellowship with others, as a result of common attitudes, interests, and goals.” Belonging to a community is more of a call to action than a passive, geographical happenstance, isn’t it? Broomfield and the numerous sub-communities it serves would not be what they are without contributions from its members, no more so than Merta. One of her favorite and most recent areas of contribution is her seat as an ambassador for the Broomfield Chamber, which she took in January of this year. Through the Chamber, she has

been able to meet and partner with heads of different non-profit organizations, such as Broomfield FISH and the Broomfield Community Foundation. She's had the pleasure of being able to volunteer with the latter speed-networking events, which serve to connect local business contacts and try to ignite local collaborations. This journey has introduced local foundations to donate some of her art pieces as Silent Auction items, a recent one being with the Broomfield Council of the Arts & Humanities. Philanthropy, or even the process of finding a place to plug in and help, can be a bit overwhelming, but Merta offers a gentle nudge of encouragement: “There is no substitute for just getting yourself out there and doing something. You are needed, and your time and talents are invaluable!”

Lights dim and the excited chatter of the crowd whispers into silence. In the stillness, the audience holds their breath and anticipation grows thick. Then the first sweet notes of the orchestra’s strings sing through the air. Christmas tree lights glow warm from the stage. Poised dancers release their statuesque holds, and the timeless winter classic begins. The Nutcracker Ballet, a staple tradition for many during the holidays, delights the young and old through the grace and beauty of dance and music. Twists and turns, leaps and tiptoed feet carry observers on an adventure. For some patrons of the show, nostalgia whisks them away in memories of years passed. Other novice attendees delight in the mystery and magic that Clara and her Nutcracker find in the Land of Sweets. To the seasoned and the fresh viewer alike, this ballet offers our community a treat to be savored.

Multiple dance companies in the Denver metro area perform The Nutcracker, but Broomfield’s own Colorado Conservatory of Dance (CCD) offers a new twist on the holiday classic that should not be missed this year. Sandra Shih Parks, Artistic Director of CCD is bringing genuine cultural expertise from across the ocean to make certain dances in The Nutcracker more culturally authentic. Having grown up in Taiwan, Mrs. Parks trained in the art of Classical Chinese Dance under the tutelage of masters in Taipei’s most prestigious dance companies. She’s danced her way around the world, and has been advocating for dance presentations away from stereotypes. Starting this year with the “Tea Dance,” traditionally known as the Chinese Dance, Sandra intends to also recraft the Coffee (Arabian Dance) and Chocolate (Spanish Dance) dances in years to come. Part of CCD’s vision, to be diverse, equitable and inclusive, echoes strongly in Mrs. Parks’ vision for The Nutcracker. The other half of this extraordinary dance

Sandra specifically chose to share her incredible talent and expertise through CCD because her heart beats with this organization’s vision to make dance available to all. “I looked around while teaching at multiple prestigious schools and realized the importance of developing the next generation of dance artists, cultural arts leaders, and to nurture supporters and patrons of dance,” Parks exults. As a non-profit organization, Colorado Conservatory of Dance lives out its dream daily through a multitude of community opportunities. From its signature anti-bully ballet program and after-school ballet classes taught in local K–12 schools to hosting other resident dance companies in their studios for their rehearsals and performances, CCD continues to engage with the community of Broomfield. “It’s like a second home to many,” shares Michelle Bernier, Director of Artistic Operations for CCD. “Our studio is a place to make friends, and

share hopes, goals, and dreams.” One of Bernier’s own dreams is to grow the company beyond excellence in ballet. She completed her Master of Fine Arts at CU and studied dance somatics; teaching dance by how it feels in your body, rather than how it looks. “Dance is a way of knowing.” Bernier loves helping our community grow through the physical knowledge that dance offers. Parks, Bernier, and the rest of the staff and faculty at Colorado Conservatory of Dance masterfully engage all ages in our midst. CCD provides the opportunity to discover the joy of dance by introducing the art form to the novices among us while simultaneously training serious dancers and holding them to the highest of standards of this fine art. “CCD strives to provide the greatest access and opportunity to dance education and performance. We believe in the transformative benefits of the various dance forms that we teach. We understand that dance extends beyond the art, as our students learn structure, time-management, and the cultivation of passion. Principal dancers from Boston Ballet and Pacific Northwest Ballet will also be featured in the roles of Sugar Plum Fairy and her Cavelier throughout the run of the production. The annual City Lifestyle Giving Campaign is in its 4th year. Last holiday season we gave away over $300,000 to help 116 individuals and families in need, but we need your help to make it happen again this year. With nominations flooding in from community members and leaders such as judges, police officers, teachers, nurses, social workers, mentors and readers like you, we were able to reach people who might otherwise go unnoticed. Perhaps you know of a single parent struggling to provide for their family, an elderly person who has experienced loss, someone enduring a health issue, a co-worker suffering a sudden, unexpected tragedy or a neighbor with a financial hardship who has fallen between the cracks of getting assistance. Chances are you know someone with a specific need, even if no one else does. “We believe in giving back and serving the communities where we live in a real and tangible way,” says Steven Schowengerdt, CEO and founder of City Lifestyle. “This Giving Campaign is about personally impacting the lives of people we know with an unexpected check in the mail just to say that someone thought of them during this holiday season.” “We believe God has blessed our company with continued success, so we in turn want to be a blessing to others,” Matthew Perry, President of City Lifestyle adds. City Lifestyle has also enacted an internal giving program whereby every employee in the company receives $100 to give away to someone in the community. “The idea is to encourage our employees to keep giving on their own,” Steven says. “Taking care of one another and blessing others is truly rewarding and it perpetuates a cycle of giving. Tips for creating the perfect board: • Start with the larger items first and build around those. If you are using jars on the board, place those first. • Be sure to have enough to fill the space. It is best to overfill so that the board doesn’t look sparse. Stack, stack and stack some more. • Use a variety of colors and textures when choosing the foods you want to use. Pick cheese with color and patterns, fruits and veggies that come in a variety of textures and colors and a protein that can make a statement. • Be sure to place similar colors in away from each other to help give symmetry.

• Walnuts, Pecans, Pistachios and any favorite nut • Grapes, berries, persimmon • Crackers

Place the jars of sauces and olives on the board first. Next place the cheeses on opposing sides. Add meats and fruits next. Layer in crackers, nuts and seeds and fill in any spots with extra nuts. Use fresh rosemary or fresh greenery to add wreath accent in the center of the charcuterie board. Garnish with fresh cranberries.
