Getting Involved, Giving Back How can Guys Who Give raise $10,000 in less than an hour? According to Arik Brum, Guys Who Give (GWG) Broomfield founding member, “Our objective is to bring 100 local guys together for an hour every quarter at Wonderland Brewing Co. It’s a great way to enjoy a beer and get to know other local guys that care about giving back, all for the common goal of combining our efforts to raise at least $10,000 for a local nonprofit.” Moreover, every guy has a say in the matter. All are encouraged to nominate a cause that speaks to their heart, and everyone has a vote. One winner is chosen by a popular, anonymous vote to receive the entire gift. They’re falling short of the $10k goal, but participation is growing! For me personally, Guys Who Give is a non-negotiable, must-attend event. I love the camaraderie and friendships that have grown from this, and I learn something new every time I go. Here are a few of the recent beneficiaries of GWG: iEmpathize, Broomfield FISH, and Daniel the Lion Day. In the spirit of gratitude for this special “Thankful” edition of Broomfield Lifestyle, I’m thankful for the community of Broomfield and for people like Arik Brum and many of the other fine gentlemen that I’ve come to know through Guys Who Give. Sometimes things hit too close to home. For Don Woodard, AKA “Moke,” that moment came with the tragic burning of Lahaina, Maui in August. “I feel a deep depth of gratitude to the people and the state of Hawaii,” said Don. “Both my family and I have been fortunate to spend many days enjoying the people, customs, friendliness, and the many activities the islands offer.” In 1968-1969, Don was a student at the University of Hawaii on Oahu. In the spring of 1969, with a group of friends, he attended the Lahaina Whaling Spree. Although he expected this event to provide some historical whaling and cultural information, it was really more of a beer-drinking festival. Consequently, he partied at The Pioneer Inn and the Whales Tale Bar, directly across the street from the famous 150-year-old Banyan Tree, originally planted in 1873. Just a few years ago, Don once again sat at The Pioneer Inn during the first week of May, toasting his 50-year reunion and celebrating cherished memories in Lahaina. The Whales Tale was originally on the ground level of the building, but a number of years ago it closed, and the building was remodeled. The second floor became The Front Street Grill & Bar, a favorite establishment for locals and tourists alike. He celebrated his 50-year reunion there as well, in memory of the Whales Tale! Tragically, on August 9th, as the world watched with great sadness, news of the burning of Lahaina, Maui spread across the globe. The loss of life was heart-wrenching, and many people in Hawaii will be dealing with unbelievably sad situations for the foreseeable future.

“LAHAINA WAS ONCE THE BUSIEST WHALING PORT IN THE PACIFIC OCEAN. MANY OF THE WHALERS WERE NOT KEEN ON HAWAIIAN’S PRIMARY DIET OF POI AND FISH. SO ENTERPRISING HAWAIIANS BEGAN GROWING POTATOES AND RAISING CATTLE FOR BEEF, WHICH INCREASED ITS OVERALL FARM PRODUCTION TODAY. DUE TO THE WASTEFUL AND CRUDE PRACTICE, THERE IS NO WHALING IN LAHAINA ANYMORE. BUT VISITORS WILL HOPEFULLY ONCE AGAIN, ENJOY SOME OF THE BEST WHALE WATCHING IN THE WORLD FROM THIS HISTORIC TOWN.” Lahaina Whaling Spree Parade in 1969.
The Pioneer Inn was built in 1901 and was the first accommodation open for travelers passing through the island of Maui and is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. In the early part of the past century, whalers who docked their ships in Lahaina would eat and drink at the saloon, and for decades the inn was a favorite spot for locals to gather. Unfortunately, this historic building was completely destroyed in the fire. Additionally, the aforementioned Banyan Tree was engulfed in flames. By some miracle, it was spared, and thanks to the love and hard work of volunteers, it seems that the Banyan Tree will be a silver lining amongst the devastation. In mid-September, new leaves were seen sprouting from the otherwise scorched local treasure—an enduring reminder of hope and resilience.

HOW BROOMFIELD CAN HELP REBUILD Sadly, the town of Lahaina and much of its rich history went up in flames. In addition to the large loss of life, the tragic fire burnt down most of the historical structures, sacred grounds, and artifacts from the past. This includes the Lahaina Heritage Museum, located in the historic Old Lahaina Courthouse. “With this total devastation, I feel like I have lost an old friend,” said Don. “After thinking of how I can help, I have decided to create a three-piece collection of high relief, mixed media artworks

depicting scenes of Lahaina and the Hawaiian Islands.” The first artwork will be titled, The Pioneer Inn, and the artwork collection will be donated to raise funds for the people of Lahaina. Metal print reproductions will be available, and the profits will be donated to the Hawaii Community Foundation. Don’s artwork is described as “Fine Art in Wood” and it is created by first drawing the image on paper, then transferring the image onto select woods with carbon paper, then hand carving the image. He creates both high and low relief images, then finishes them with fine detailed painting, using watercolor paints and stains. When completed, the artwork receives a coat of clear matte finish to seal the wood and protect the painting.

A mom’s love grows into a community, invaluable in the journey of acceptance and education regarding Microtia and Atresia.
Imagine yourself in the first few moments of your child’s life, counting tiny fingers and toes and admiring those first innocent cries. Now imagine the emotions that would come with discovering that something is “off” with this innocent life in your arms. When Melissa Tumblin gave birth to her daughter, Ally, she and her husband discovered something unexpected and unseen on any pregnancy scans. Ally was born in 2009 without her right ear, stirring up emotions and bringing up a number of questions between Melissa and her husband. What caused this? Is our baby going to be okay? Sadly, the Tumblins soon found there was not much information readily available for them regarding their baby’s condition, Microtia and Atresia (missing or underdeveloped ears and absent or underdeveloped ear canals resulting in hearing loss, respectively). Feeling alone and without answers, Melissa started a Facebook group to see if there were others out there in the same situation seeking comfort and guidance. Within a year, her small support group had over one thousand global followers, and in 2012, she was led to start the Ear Community, a 501(c)(3) nonprofit to advocate and bring light to children and adults born with Microtia and Atresia. The Ear Community provides emotional support, education about options, resources for IEPs, and financial assistance for hearing devices and surgeries for Microtia and Atresia. In addition, the Ear Community has brought together over 15 thousand people for picnics across the

globe, donated over 150 bone-anchored hearing systems (BAHS), and is responsible for founding National Microtia and Atresia Awareness Day, now recognized on November 9. Melissa is grateful to the organization’s members, as well as those who support the cause. “I couldn’t do any of this on my own,” she says. “We have picnic hosts in different states and countries who lead events that I cannot attend. We’ve had surgeons and audiologists attend our events who are sources of comfort and knowledge. Also, those who donate to our nonprofit… They’re the reason we’ve been able to do so much.” In 2019, Ally’s Act was introduced to Congress, which would ensure coverage of BAHS and cochlear implant systems (CI) by private insurance companies for children and adults to age 64, including associated services and costs. Melissa has, along her journey, helped launch the first all options Microtia and Atresia Clinic at Vanderbilt University Medical Center, and collaborated on the discovery of new genetic information that has led to a better understanding of the chromosome and genes involved with this condition. “This finding will be life-changing for parents across the globe. There are so many mothers out there who think they ate, drank, or did something during pregnancy that caused this to happen to their children,” said Melissa. “Now we know the cause, which is so important for mothers to know so they do not blame themselves."

The most wonderful time of the year can quickly turn into weeks or months of pain and unexpected hospital bills. “Most people think holiday lighting installation is a very simple DIY project,” cautions Anthony Rivera, owner of NoCo Window Cleaning. “The fact of the matter is, that it’s not only difficult but dangerous.”

The sincere, blue-eyed, twenty-something takes his profession seriously. Anthony brings training, experience and expertise to holiday lighting and decorating services. He also specializes in window, solar panel and gutter cleaning, and all kinds of pressure washing. Rivera loves working outside and finds customers’ satisfied reactions to be the most gratifying part of his job. “I like being the magician, hearing people say, ‘Wow! I’ve never seen [my windows] that clear before!’” Rivera dreamed of owning his own business for years. His father immigrated from Juarez and achieved citizenship when Rivera was in high school. Mr. Rivera, a truck driver, modeled a strong work ethic to Anthony and his six younger siblings. Their mother also demonstrated hard work as a manager at Wendy’s. Rivera’s drive for a different experience started at Costco, overseeing national inventory operations from his office in Seattle. Outside of work, Rivera had lots of time on his hands, having left all his friends and family in Colorado, so he picked up a second job in window cleaning. Rivera’s supervisor took him under his wing, mentored him in the art of window magic, and set Anthony up to run his own business.

COVID prompted Anothony’s move back to Northglenn to be near family. Shortly thereafter, the Marshall Fire ravaged our community and big contracted companies came in to clean up. However, a few days after that washing, residents felt frustrated as ash continued to fall into the tracks while opening their windows. Wanting to offer his skill set to those affected by the fires, Rivera creatively developed a new deep cleaning method. He removed the entire window to scour every possible surface and groove. His thorough job recommended him to others, and quickly Anthony had more business than he ever anticipated.

Though Rivera doesn’t want NoCo Window Cleaning to grow huge, as he loves building and keeping relationships with his customers, he has and will hire a few more people. Anthony exudes warmth and integrity, and values the same qualities in those he employs. If he could choose to work with anyone, Anthony said he would pick, “My current employee, Noe. He is heartfelt, genuine, and a hard worker who inspires me to be a better person.” Rivera then elaborated, “Noe treats everyone with respect and care and has a drive to grow and learn.”
Anthony Rivera might as well be describing himself. This local businessman cares deeply for others and takes pride in a job well done. However, he is most proud of, “Being a role model to my younger family members and giving them a vision of what might be possible for their lives.” Perhaps this holiday season, you’ll let Anthony give you a vision of how your home could shine, decked out for the holidays.
