Jumping Right In!
August 2022 PUBLISHER
Justin Schierkolk | justin.schierkolk@citylifestyle.com EDITOR IAL COOR DINATOR
Sarah Schierkolk | sarah.schierkolk@citylifestyle.com
In the spirit of Warrior Challenge Arena (WCA), our cover story, let’s jump in head-first! I stand humbled in awe of the athleticism and skill of the athletes and coaches at WCA. How great is it that we are blessed with the drive and passion of Michael Homan, the founder and one of the lead coaches, to bring such a unique offering to Broomfield’s youth? They have plenty to offer us grown-ups too, and it’s definitely worth your time to pay them a visit, no-matter your athletic ability. In addition to Warrior Challenge Arena, here are a few other things we highlight in this issue: • The Tom Deland Memorial Golf Tournament on July 11th was a huge success. Broomfield really pulled together to show support for our first-responder community. • We teamed up with CASA of Broomfield and Adams Counties to run a volunteer spotlight and learn more about what makes being a CASA so fulfilling. • Dr. Hogan of Hogan Health & Chiropractic shares with us how effective chiropractic care can be for youth athletes. Since this issue is focused on both kids AND pets, don’t miss some great bits of advice from our local pet food expert, Sharon Hodge! Sharon is the owner of Pet Wants Broomfield, and she shared her personal story about how switching to high-quality, fresh dog food has helped her pups live their best lives! Finally, a shout out to Christine, the winner of our Easter Egg challenge from the June issue! She won a $50 Visa gift card and a few other goodies from Broomfield Lifestyle. See if you can find the Easter Egg in this issue… send me a message on Instagram or Facebook with the codeword and be entered for a chance to win. Good luck! As always, a huge THANK YOU to all of our partners and readers! I hope you enjoy this issue as we close out the summer and look ahead to fall. In gratitude,

FOR PETEY’S SAKE
Sharon Hodge-Owner of Pet Wants Broomfield
HOW A PET OWNER IMPROVED HER BEST FRIENDS’ QUALITY OF LIFE THROUGH PROPER NUTRITION
Siblings Petey and Olive are Staffordshire terrier mixes who love to spend their days in the Colorado sun, hiking or playing fetch with their best friend and human, Sharon Hodge. Petey is a loyal and distinguished gentleman, while Olive is a social butterfly who enjoys modeling new outfits that she wears to keep her skin safe from sun exposure. Sharon has always wanted what was best for her furry sidekicks, and has faced some difficult health challenges along the way.

You see, both Petey and Olive are cancer survivors, and both have severe allergy problems. Sharon spent years trying different medications and short lived solutions for Petey, her first fur baby, and his allergies, but nothing seemed to alleviate the strain it put on his health. She felt even more hopeless watching his happy demeanor dwindle and overall personality shadowed by his sickness. The love that Sharon had for Petey motivated her to educate herself and seek

the help she needed to restore her best friend’s quality of life. She knew that there had to be answers and solutions, and was determined to find them. By fate, Sharon came across a mobile pet store that was knowledgeable about what they were going through, and provided both a beacon of hope for Petey’s cancer and so many answers that she had been seeking. They provided individualized care, and helped Petey find a new food- the only kibble he could completely digest, which also eliminated his allergies. Victory! Today Olive and Petey are living their best lives, in spite of their history of
allergies and cancer. Sharon credits this happy ending to Pet Wants, the company who shed light on an unknown time for her and her pups. Due to Sharon’s experience, she decided to dedicate the next chapter in her life to helping others figure out the best solutions for their own pets’ nutritional needs. Pet Wants Broomfield is fresh, nutritious pet food made with the best ingredients possible and delivered to your doorstep. So you might see Olive riding shotgun, with her head out of the window on your next delivery. If you see her, be sure to give her a wave!

PET FOOD MYTHS 1. Myth: All pet food was created equal. Truth: Avoid products with corn, soy, wheat, by-products or rawhide, and these are not good for digestive health. 2. Myth: You know what is in your pet’s food. Truth: Pet food is not regulated like human food. Harmful fillers are often added that may lead to serious health issues. 3. Myth: My pet isn’t food motivated. Truth: Likely, they are bored or have a sensitivity. Rotating proper food formulas can help keep their interest and add extra nutrients. 4. Myth: Pet treats are junk food. Truth: This depends on the treat. Choose all natural and single ingredient options for health benefits that might not be included in their food.

TOUCHDOWN! DR. JEFF HOGAN AND YOUTH SPORTS GO HAND IN HAND
As a parent, there are countless things you can do for your child’s health other than the daily glass of milk and multivitamin, especially if they are into athletics. Early chiropractic care in youth sports is one of those many things. Children involved in athletics are prone to various injuries. That's why chiropractic care helps them perform in sports and ensure that injuries don’t damage those growing bodies.

Dr. Jeff ’s health advice for kids: • Maintain flexibility and strength by being active consistently • Remember the body is not invincible (Don’t be afraid to take breaks) • Be proactive about recovery if injured (rest time, chiropractic care) • Take time to learn about nutrition and health

FAM ILY CA R E | HEA LTH + W E LLNE S S
Dr. Jeff Hogan, of Hogan Health & Chiropractic (and iCome2U Chiropractic!), provides chiropractic treatment for children because he himself received life-altering chiropractic care as a child athlete. Growing up, he played hockey and, as a natural result of shoulder checks and spills on skates, he sustained some injuries. His love for the ice spurred his ‘sports focus’ when he eventually studied medicine in college. Fast forward to today, and Dr. Jeff is paying it forward by seeing patients of all ages (as young as 10 days old!), especially young athletes. Dr. Jeff is a big advocate for children’s health, and encourages people of all ages to be proactive about the care that their bodies need–whether it’s nutrition, flexibility, recovery, or strength training. He sees anyone from collision athletes (like hockey players) to mixed martial arts understudies, to all to all the outdoor explorers of Colorado (skiers, climbers, hikers, trail runners)... and young football players like Logan!
Having your kid’s back! Logan is a promising young local football player, as well as a loyal patient of Dr. Jeff. And not only is he a big fan of football, Logan is a big fan of his chiropractic care! Logan started seeing Dr. Jeff about five years ago, which made him feel “so much better.” Logan plays for both the Broomfield Bearcats, as well as the Broomfield Football Club! He is a versatile player on the football field. Playing offensive guard one minute and middle linebacker on defense the next. Logan prefers the latter because tackling is his favorite thing about his favorite sport! “I’m relieved my child is being taken care of while playing a sport that is rough on the body” said Sherrie, Logan’s mother, who is sure to have the same feelings as any other parent on the sidelines of a football field! It’s never easy watching your kids tackle (and get tackled)! But, nevertheless, parents support their dreams from the sidelines–and one of the most important ways to support their dreams is to support their entire skeletal structure. To look into pediatric chiropractic is to have your kid’s back (all 33 vertebrae).

Calling All Warriors
BUILDING CONFIDENCE AND CHARACTER IN A FUN AND CHALLENGING ENVIRONMENT ARTICLE BY SHAY BRASE PHOTOGRAPHY BY RANDY ELLIS PHOTOGRAPHY
Warrior Challenge Arena is set out to inspire and motivate those of varying skill levels through interactive play. All ages, from preschool-aged to adult, are encouraged to challenge themselves physically and mentally in an uplifting environment of obstacle courses and games. WCA coaches encourage “can do” attitudes and building resilience and growth mindsets in their students. Owner Michael Homan is passionate about the WCA youth program. He says that the most fulfilling part of this program is watching “I’ll try” become “I did it!” when a child finds inner strength they weren’t aware of before. The opportunity to feel this joy comes often, with 22 weekly classes being offered for ages 3-18, including a thriving homeschool program with a curriculum that incorporates science and biology. One family started in Warrior homeschool class three years ago and have found community in the WCA family. Leo and Luna Wood are not only highly-trained athletes in ninja and parkour, but are also coaches at the gym. Their mother, Linda, has watched them gain body awareness and life skills during their tenure, including coordination, personal limits, spatial awareness, and how to be supportive teammates.

“Seeing yourself (or your kids) improve and get stronger feels amazing, and gives such a great sense of achievement.”
Linda’s goal for her kids is first and foremost to have fun and enjoy life. She believes that when you’re having fun you learn the most, so discovering and honoring the things that drive us become win-win situations. As a family who enjoys an active lifestyle, warrior training is one of those situations. “Seeing yourself (or your kids) improve and get stronger feels amazing, and gives such a great sense of achievement,” she says. Linda mentions how competition is not pushed in their household. Both of her kids have had time on the winners’ podium, but are also well-rounded teens with encouraging stories to tell. We had the chance to interview both Leo and Luna so that they could share their thoughts and stories. CONTINUED > AUGUST 2 0 2 2 | C I TYL I FE STYL E . C OM/BR O O M F I E L D

Leo Wood, age 17 Leo is more accomplished than your average teenager. He recently won 3rd place in state through the Colorado Ninja League (CNL), ran a Spartan Race, and joined a tricking class, and has years of training under his belt. He has also been coaching at WCA for nearly three years- a job that he takes seriously and enjoys, serving as a mentor for the up-and-coming warriors at the gym. You won’t, however, see Leo’s stripes getting to his head. “I’m still a normal teenager!” Wood says. He loves spending time with his family and friends, reading, video games, and being active outdoors. Leo’s journey into training began at the age of six, after being mesmerized by a parkour class taking place at a park. The group was double his age and the coach was skeptical to let him try it out. After weeks of his mom’s persistence, the coach agreed to give Leo a shot, and he kept updespite his size. By the end of the class it was the coach who was asking Linda to let him join the class officially. Persistence paid off! Leo finds balance between challenging himself and self-preservation. “Some days I’m tired from a long week, but I get out there and train,” he says. “Some days I really need a break, and that’s okay too. You need to find ways to enjoy what you’re doing, even on the harder days.” Leo is thankful for the opportunities he has coaching and training at Warrior Challenge Arena and says they will serve him well in the future. He is on track to join the pros next year and would like to continue coaching as an adult.

Luna Wood, age 14
Luna’s gentle and patient nature is a breath of fresh air in a sometimes intense competitive environment, and is a great attribute of WCA’s Wee Warrior program. Luna also started her warrior training three years ago at the age of 11, and became an assistant coach the following year. She loves being able to help the younger ninja crew and the responsibility of having a job at such a young age. “It’s amazing!” she says. “You have to keep [the children] safe and happy, and you want them to learn and have fun. I never make them do anything if they feel scared so I can gain their trust, but I always encourage them to do more and go further.” Luna seems to live by the same mantra. She has earned first place rankings in both a CNL competition and an Ultimate Ninja Athlete Association (UNAA) state competition, but has learned that competing is not what drives her. She now finds joy taking pictures at the meets and cheering her gym mates and brother on from the sidelines, as well as teaching herself all she can about a new passionaerial acrobatics.
Luna, Linda, Leo with Dudley the gym mascot Stepping outside of one’s comfort zone helps build resilience and problem solving skills that can be adapted to physical, mental, and emotional challenges in life. Early childhood is a great time to be introduced to such challenges. This type of environment will be more controlled than it will be once “real life” comes into play during adolescence and into adulthood. Of her own children, Linda Wood says that being involved in such sports and activities has kept them busy and helped them develop self-discipline. “When they are training for an upcoming competition, they’ve trained themselves to take the time to practice at home and at the gym, make sure they get enough sleep, and eat healthier foods,” she says. Such habits help build the foundation for a healthy and fulfilling adult life. Warrior Challenge Arena aims to serve as a safe stepping stone toward teaching all ages to get excited, rather than frightened, of something different. Their resolve is to build warriors of character who are F.E.A.R.L.E.S.S.- through Focus, Effort, Attitude, Respect, Love, Enthusiasm, Strength, and Smarter Habits. SOO BAHK DO ARTICLE BY NINA BALDACCI-SLOAN PHOTOGRAPHY BY SARAH DAWN PHOTOGRAPHY
More Than a Martial Art!
Students and families engaging their first martial arts class with any given studio often begin with expectations of gaining discipline, confidence, and athleticism. They are seeking something that offers connection between physical activity and character development. The instructors at Rocky Mountain Martial Arts – Front Range, a non-profit Soo Bahk Do Moo Duk Kwan school here in Broomfield, are ready to meet this challenge, knowing Soo Bahk Do offers so much more. Founded in 1945, Soo Bahk Do is a traditional, Korean, defensive martial art. Students are trained to be effective not just through their technique, or their personal character development, but in how one is to carry themselves in dealing with adversity. Successful training is not measured simply by winning or losing, but in how students use their training as they engage in real life circumstances. Students are challenged to pursue their own personal best while learning their increased effectiveness through empathizing and connecting with others. This holistic approach to martial arts training honoring technique, scholarship, tradition, and harmony with others has created a powerfully unique and diverse community at Rocky Mountain Martial Arts. Covering a broad range of ages, abilities, backgrounds, and overall walks of life, students find deep connection through the hardship of training together (especially through the pandemic!), and it is through this connection that they can make a greater impact in their community.

Arik Brum and his two daughters began their training in early 2020 to simply encourage them to try something new, and with the hopes of bringing their oldest daughter out of her shell. He was quickly surprised how deeply rewarding it was to do something like this together and how rare it was to participate in something that did not always bring immediate gratification. At about the same time, the Amaria family was seeking a martial arts experience that offered activity and movement and were expecting a transactional experience where the kids would go to class and practice at home. Soo Bahk Do surprised them, offering connections between physical training and life, encouraging that the mastery of anything takes practice, practice creates effectiveness, and effectiveness creates meaningful connection with others. The Farner family has seen positive leadership traits in their son, leading from a place of humility and empathy rather than superiority. More than success stories, lives are truly impacted for the long haul. It is this path of training that makes Soo Bahk Do much more than a martial art and the families at Rocky Mountain Martial Arts – Front Range extraordinary. Confidence: In the program since its inception, orange belts Mason and Ada are having fun with their instructors and friends while focusing on power and confidence in their technique. Connection: Families, individuals, young, senior, and everything in between, there is a place in Soo Bahk Do for everyone.

When Charlene Campbell retired from teaching, her coworker suggested she would make a great CASA. Charlene had never heard of the CASA organization and mistakenly believed her coworker was speaking Spanish, saying she would make a wonderful house. After her friend elaborated, Charlene went home and researched the nonprofit for herself. “Without a doubt, I knew I wanted to be a CASA and immediately started the process. I began training in June of 2011, was appointed to my first case in July, and there’s been no looking back since.” CASA stands for Court Appointed Special Advocates and is a national nonprofit organization with almost 1000 programs across the country. Abbie Foley, Development Director of CASA of Adams & Broomfield Counties, shares, “Our mission is to provide court-appointed volunteer advocacy for children and youth from the child welfare system, so every child can be safe, have a permanent home, and the opportunity to thrive.” Each year, there are approximately 1600 children with open abuse and neglect cases in Adams and Broomfield Counties, and currently, CASA is only able to serve 600 of those kids. Therefore, the organization welcomes new volunteers in order to serve more children. Charlene is now in her eleventh year as a CASA volunteer and has advocated for nine children on seven cases. Prior to becoming a CASA, Charlene had never been to court or dealt with social services and had no idea about this difficult and important work. Charlene finds it extremely rewarding to make a difference in children's lives. “I can use my gifts, talents and skills to make one child’s experience a little easier. It’s very fulfilling to be the constant, familiar presence in their case, and to keep showing up. To see their relief when I arrive, and hear them say, ‘She’s here, my CASA is here.’” Charlene shares for anyone considering becoming a CASA volunteer that “It’s the hardest, most rewarding work I’ve ever done in my life. By being a CASA, I feel a deep sense of pride as I become part of the child’s professional team.” Charlene appreciates that CASAs are not set apart as volunteers, but are respected by the court and considered part of the team, along with the child’s Guardian Ad Litem and Caseworker. Standing next to a child and telling them “This is tough, but we’ll get through it together,” is something Charlene does often. Although she says being a CASA can be difficult and emotional at times, she remembers in those moments, “If not me, then who?” For more information on CASA or becoming a volunteer, please visit casa17th.org.

ESTATE PLANNING FOR YOU AND YOUR FAMILY. ARTICLE BY DAVE MANLEY & AARON RASK PHOTOGRAPHY BY SARAH DAWN PHOTOGRAPHY
Aaron Rask & Dave Manley - Summit Financial Solutions, Broomfield
An estate plan is not just for high-networth individuals, it’s for everyone who is single, has a spouse, has a partner, has dependents, owns a business, has investments, has retirement funds, owns property, or has material possessions of value such as a car. An estate plan may reduce estate taxes and shield your beneficiaries from having to go through probate. It means your last wishes will be heard. You can name a guardian for any young children and can even direct how you wish a beloved pet to be cared for after you are gone. Having an estate plan can also prevent a mess by bringing clarity to your beneficiaries, and it can protect assets from unforeseen creditors.1 The estate plan 2 may contain a will or living trust, the names of your beneficiaries, the appointment of an executor, a letter of intent that tells a beneficiary or executor what you wish to be done with specific assets, funeral details, and special requests. It should contain a healthcare

directive with a power of attorney appointing a trusted person to make medical decisions for you when you can no longer voice your opinion, and a durable power of attorney appointing a trusted friend or relative to make financial and legal decisions for you, if you become incapacitated. It may also contain a trust or trusts for passing on assets to your beneficiaries. Life insurance can be an important component in the overall estate plan. You should update your estate plan whenever a major change occurs in your life, such as purchasing a home, moving in with a significant other, getting married, having or adopting a baby, selling your business, getting a divorce, retiring, or having a beneficiary die before you do. Review your plan when federal and state laws on estate taxes change. If you should die without a will (which is called “intestate”), 3 the state and federal governments will have standard procedures for distributing your assets, and they may not be in line with your wishes. Your beneficiaries may have to pay more in estate taxes, and probate may take considerably longer than it would if you had a will in place. Consult a professional financial advisor on tax and estate planning. Trusts can be complicated to set up, so consult a professional trusts and estates attorney or certified public account before you begin.

5-YEAR-OLD ESME HOLMES TOOK THE GRAND PRIZE!
TINY TOT TOWN COLORING CONTEST WINNER! 40
A RT IST ’S PA LE T T E | ARTS + CULTURE
In April of this year, Bal Swan Children's Center held the inaugural Tiny Tot Town event at the Broomfield High School Gymnasium. It was a huge success, and we were thrilled to participate! Hundreds of families had a great time experiencing a tot-sized version of a town, including a variety of Broomfield businesses, from photography to banking to restaurants and more. They had a blast teaching kids about the services they provide while having a ton of fun! Speaking of fun, Broomfield Lifestyle hosted a coloring contest featuring an illustration of Josh's Pond, a local landmark of deep sentimental meaning. The colorful approach of 5-yearold Esme Holmes captured the essence of Josh's Pond. She received a brand new coloring kit, including a gift card to Rails End Beer Company for mom and dad. A big THANK YOU to all who participated!
