OPEN HOUSE (CONTINUED) Along with enriching activities and family visits for residents, Villagio provides residents with healthy, nourishing meals focusing on nutritious options like superfoods. For October, the menu centered around foods like pumpkin and seafood. Villagio’s concept of support extends to family members of residents. They offer respite care for individuals who need a place for their loved ones to stay if they’re going out of town. Often, Carisa says, this service has a 90% conversion rate. “While they were doing just fine at home, they do even better in this community,” she explains. “Then the family member sees that and says ‘wow, this could be so much better.’” The community also strives to maintain strong relationships with families with the safe and supportive environment it provides for residents. That includes strict adherence to COVID protocols and an open environment where everyone feels welcome, Carisa states. “I’ve worked in communities where residents in memory support never saw their families, and that’s just not how it is here,” Carisa says. “Families always talk about how caring the staff is. They know that their loved one is at home when they’re here.” It’s that kind of care that makes Villagio a vital place for residents and members of the larger Broomfield community.

I OU S F O OD . DO YOU PLAN ON HOSTING A GATHERING OF FAMILY OR FRIENDS OVER THE HOLIDAYS? Whether it be a game night with close friends or Christmas Eve with extended family, you can wow your guests with a homemade charcuterie board on the table. Want to attempt your own work of culinary art but don’t know where to start? Base your board around 2-3 meats (Genoa salami, prosciutto and sopressata are easy-to-find and popular options) and 2-3 cheeses. Brie or camembert are good choices for something creamy and without overwhelming flavor. From here, would you prefer something strong or mild? Perhaps something with herbs, pepper, some spice? What about something with a fruity lemon flavor, or one that has a hint of red wine? Have fun with your cheeses. Explore new tastes and appearances. Some stores will let you sample a cheese before making a purchase. After your meats and cheeses are selected, let creativity flow as you fill in the rest of your board with a selection of the ingredients on the next page…

FINANCIAL BUZZ

every business ow n e r n e e d s a team of trusted advisors

IF YOU’RE A BUSINESS OWNER, YOU ARE USED TO WEARING A LOT OF HATS. Still, you can’t be an expert at everything, which is why it’s important to build a network of trusted professionals that you can turn to for help whenever the need arises. No matter how successful you are, there are plenty of reasons to establish a professional network. In addition to exchanging contacts and referrals, there’s also the opportunity to share ideas and receive free advice from specialists in their field. And, much like getting a second opinion on a medical procedure, your network can act as a system of checks and balances by making sure you weigh all your options. ASK YOURSELF: Whom should you invite to be part of your network? While the members may vary depending on your strengths and weaknesses, your team should probably

include some-or all-of the following professionals*:

FINANCIAL SOLUTIONS ATTORNEY: Unless you have in-house council or a legal background yourself, an attorney-especially one with some experience in your industry-is almost a necessity. Among other things, an attorney can help defend you and your company from potential lawsuits, review contracts, and help with succession planning. ACCOUNTANT: While most people only use their accountant during tax season, business owners will find that an ongoing relationship can save them money in the long run. Not only can an accountant keep you from running afoul of the IRS, they can also show you how to structure your business and become a more tax-efficient operation. BANKER/FINANCIER: As we all know, cash flow is the lifeblood of any business. And in today’s restrictive lending environment, having a banker in your corner can be a real boon. By providing easy access to credit, or letting you hear about the most favorable rates, a banker can be an invaluable addition to your team. GIVING BACK

ARTICLE ALLISON GIBESON PHOTOGRAPHY JANIE JONES

GIVING AWAY AFTER A SUCCESSFUL CAMPAIGN LAST YEAR, LIFESTYLE PUBLICATIONS IS GIVING $300,000 TO RECIPIENTS IN NEED THIS CHRISTMAS SEASON AND BEYOND... AND WE NEED YOUR HELP!

ABOUT SIX YEARS AGO ANNA SAROL, THE DAUGHTER OF A SINGLE MOTHER, WAS PARALYZED IN A GYMNASTICS ACCIDENT WHEN SHE WAS A FRESHMAN IN HIGH SCHOOL, BUT UNTIL LAST YEAR SHE DID NOT HAVE A STAIRLIFT IN HER HOME. The stairlift was made possible when Lifestyle Publications gave her family $10,000. “I watched my community come together to help me get this equipment to my house, and words can’t explain how appreciative my

family and I are,” Anna says. The money for Anna’s stairlift was part of a giveaway campaign from the company during the 2020 Christmas season that benefited more than 80 recipients across the country with a final distribution of $250,000 throughout the year. When the company opened nominations, they were flooded with submissions. Community leaders such as judges, police officers, teachers, nurses, social workers, mentors and readers like you nominated people that were in need of assistance. As the eyes and ears of the community, these readers were able to help identify people who might have

otherwise gone unnoticed or unrecognized. One such nominee was Kathy*, an aunt who is raising her three young relatives. The children came from an abusive situation, and Kathy, a single guardian, works tirelessly to provide for them. Nevertheless, the family was already living in poverty despite her working seven days a week when Kathy lost her job during the pandemic. She resorted to selling tamales to help pay the rent. When a case manager with a Big Brothers Big Sisters foster youth mentoring program heard about Lifestyle’s campaign and call for nominations, she quickly thought of Kathy. “When I shared the news that Kathy was selected and would be receiving $3,000, she cried, screamed, and was in disbelief,” the case manager said. “She immediately wanted to give back to me and the donor by providing endless tamales. This funding allowed the children to have a small Christmas tree for the first time ever. Kathy was able to pay her rent and utilities for three months, and the children were able to experience a holiday season in peace without financial stressors.” In yet another case, Emily* who worked as a janitor at a school, was a recipient and was struggling to afford simply buying groceries for her children. Before the ongoing difficulties of the pandemic even started, a tornado destroyed the school she worked at just a couple weeks before the initial shutdown in March 2020 which resulted in a loss of income for her. Emily was incredibly surprised and grateful to receive assistance from the giveaway. *Names changed for privacy
