LIFESTYLE LETTER
Thankful for Brookfield There’s something about November that brings an appreciation for the people and places that make our community feel like home. As another busy holiday season begins, it feels like the perfect time to celebrate some of them. This month’s cover story celebrates a remarkable milestone for Uptown Motors: 80 years in business. We enjoyed looking back with them on the people, relationships, and commitment to community that have helped shape the dealership over the years. We also sat down with Dawn Zehren of the Zonta Club of Milwaukee as the organization celebrates 100 years of service. Dawn shared more about the club’s advocacy for women and girls and its newest initiative, Project Wellspring. Her story is a reminder of the good happening in our community, thanks to those who generously give their time and talents. And, because November also means gathering around the table, we also have some holiday inspiration for you. Dave Hess, owner of Graze Craze, shares tips for effortless holiday entertaining. If you haven’t tried one of his charcuterie boards yet, you must. They’re perfect for any gathering and they make an excellent host gift. Finally, we’re thankful for you, our readers. We always love hearing from you, so keep sending us your story ideas, community tidbits, and feedback. And if you’ve captured a great photo while you’re out and about in Brookfield, send it our way. We’d love to feature more reader-submitted photos in our City Scene pages. Wishing you and your family a happy Thanksgiving!

A CENTURY OF Service FOR Women Zonta Club of Milwaukee marks 100 years of creating opportunities for women and girls ARTICLE BY ERIN TREDER | PHOTOGRAPHY PROVIDED
For 100 years, the Zonta Club of Milwaukee has been committed to improving the lives of women and girls through service and advocacy, creating opportunities locally and around the world. With a diverse group of members, the club raises funds for scholarships and other projects, supports local organizations that benefit women and girls, and gives members opportunities to make a difference through hands-on service. Zonta Club of Milwaukee is part of Zonta International, founded in Buffalo, New York, in 1919. Today, the organization includes more than 25,000 members in over 1,000 clubs across 65 countries, working to advance the rights, opportunities, education and well-being of women and girls worldwide.
DRAWN TO THE MISSION
Dawn Zehren, a club member and treasurer of the foundation, joined just over three years ago after learning about Zonta through another professional in her network. Its mission immediately resonated with her. “I believe that if women and girls have a better world, everybody has a better world,” Zehren says. She is now one of four co-chairs of the club’s centennial gala, which will be held Saturday, November 7, at the Harley-Davidson Garage. The theme, “Strong Foundation, Stronger Future,” celebrates the club’s history while looking ahead. “We are celebrating what we and the women before us have achieved,” Zehren says. “But we are not here to rest on our laurels. We are looking at the next 100 years.”
PROJECT WELLSPRING TAKES SHAPE
That future begins with Project Wellspring, a signature centennial project created in partnership with Community Advocates, which is celebrating its 50th anniversary. The initiative will help

“I believe that if women and girls have a better world, everybody has a better world.” survivors of domestic violence and human trafficking transition into safe, stable housing while giving them greater autonomy in creating their new homes. Project Wellspring will assist at least 12 households with essential furnishings and household items, while allowing participants to make choices about what they need and how to use available resources. Participants will also have access to an emergency fund for unexpected expenses that could otherwise threaten their financial stability. For Zehren, the ability to make those choices is an important part of rebuilding. “These funds are there for the women and their children to, with dignity, claim their own space,” she says. The larger goal is to strengthen housing stability and long-term self-sufficiency while helping families begin a new chapter. “The children see, ‘Mom can do this. I can do this,’” Zehren says. “We are breaking the cycle, one family at a time.”
THE WORK CONTINUES
Project Wellspring joins a long list of service efforts for the Milwaukee club. Members have helped with community gardens and organized diaper and feminine hygiene product drives, while also raising money for organizations and programs benefiting women and girls. The club’s annual fashion show has become another important fundraiser, netting more than $30,000 in each of the past several years through ticket sales, silent auctions, raffles and community support. As Zonta Club of Milwaukee celebrates its first century, those ongoing efforts reflect a mission that extends well beyond the anniversary—and a commitment to continue serving women, girls, and the community for years to come.
“We need greater exposure, and we need new people involved,” Zehren says. “We need women and men of every age who are interested in contributing to their community.” Those interested in joining can submit an application through the club’s website. Meetings typically take place on the fourth Wednesday of each month, with November’s meeting held on the third Wednesday because of Thanksgiving. The club also sponsors a Z Club for high school students and hopes to develop more youth groups. For more information about the club, ways to get involved or membership, contact Zehren at dawnzontamke@gmail.com or visit zontamilwaukee.org.

UPTOWN MOTORS CELEBRATES 80 YEARS OF SERVING THE COMMUNITY
At Uptown Motors, you’ll find plenty of beautiful vehicles, but the real story isn’t sitting on the showroom floor. It’s in the relationships built over the years, the customers who return generation after generation, and the longevity of employees who understand that a successful dealership is about far more than putting someone behind the wheel. “We take care of individual needs,” says John Pentler, president of the Wauwatosa dealership, now in its 80th year of business. “I can’t tell you how many calls I get from people asking, ‘Can you help me?’ Many of our best customers over the decades started their relationship with us because of an issue. That’s how you earn customer loyalty.” Pentler is a third-generation owner who has been at the Mayfair Road store for 22 years, carrying on a family business with deep roots in Wauwatosa and a history of growth. Here are some of the significant milestones along the way: • 1946: Uptown Motors began when brothers Irv and Ray Pentler opened a used-car lot on Center Street. Irv sold a Mercury convertible he had put away when he was in World War II and bought three used cars to start the business. The business took its name from the surrounding Uptown neighborhood. • 1965: The dealership moved to its current Mayfair Road location. • 1991: The family opened a dealership in Slinger, where John’s brother, Mark, serves as president. The operation offers Chevrolet, Chrysler, and Jeep models. • 1996: The Mayfair Road store underwent a full renovation. • 2023: The family expanded its Ford operations with the addition of Uptown Lincoln at 2001 N. Mayfair Rd., along with a truck service center farther down the street. The Lincoln dealership is highly visible from the freeway. CONTINUED >

The truck service center is just one example of how Uptown responds to the needs of the market. Companies such as Amazon and FedEx rely on the dedicated service space in the 14-bay building to keep their fleets running efficiently. Across both campuses, Uptown employs 200 people, both fulland part-time. “We invest heavily in our people,” Pentler says. “Management leads by example. The result is longevity. Our service manager has been here for 46 years. Our controller has been here for 50 years.” Pentler remembers a time when car salesmen were often viewed as fast-talking and pushy. He never liked that stigma. Instead, Uptown has embraced a laid-back, comfortable approach to customer service. “Our business is a people business,” he explains. “It’s amazing how you can catch up on life during a customer’s oil change.” While the dealership is consistently busy, business typically peaks in the summer and again in December, when year-end deals attract buyers. For Pentler, though, there’s another special part of the season. “I love the surprise part of it when it’s a gift,” he says. For some customers, it’s their first car. For others, it’s another vehicle from a favorite brand. Pentler says those cars often become part of a family’s history. Children remember road trips, family vacations, and everyday moments spent in the family car, creating associations that can last for generations. While the basics of car sales remain much the same, today’s consumers are more informed. Buyers arrive with more knowledge about vehicles, pricing, and options, leaving less room for negotiation and putting an even greater emphasis on trust and relationships.

GIVING BACK
Uptown is also known as a supportive community partner, sponsoring sports teams and local events, including the recent Oktoberfest in Elm Grove. “We are part of a small community. People come to us for help, so it’s nice to give back,” Pentler says. That spirit of gratitude has been passed down through the generations. “My biggest blessing was being able to work with my dad,” Pentler says, reflecting on his father and mentor, Glenn, the dealership’s previous president, who passed away in 2024. “Not many people get to spend time with their dad like I did. He was genuine. He would help the most powerful people in the community, as well as those who were struggling, all with the same level of respect. Plus, he would be as close with the car wash guy here as with the general manager.” That same appreciation for customers, employees and the community has become part of the culture at Uptown, as the dealership celebrates its 80th anniversary with gratitude and pride.

GIVING TOGETHER A Community That Shows Up
Every year, City Lifestyle sends checks to hundreds of families in need across the country through our annual Giving Campaign and our nonprofit arm, Kingdom Building Foundation. But none of it would be possible without you. We can only help the people we know about, and

that’s where our readers come in. If you know someone quietly struggling, whether it’s a single parent, a senior citizen, or a family facing something they never saw coming, we want to hear their story. Nominations are what make this whole campaign possible.
We provided a chair lift for a teenager paralyzed in a gymnastics accident so she could move freely through her own home again. We helped a child who lost an eye to cancer get the prosthetic because insurance wouldn’t cover it. We covered dental work for a man who needed his smile back just to walk into a job interview. We got heat turned back on for a family who had spent part of the winter without it. We helped a family keep up with bills while a husband and father fought pancreatic cancer, and we helped another family cover medical expenses after the unimaginable loss of a child. These are just a few examples of some of the hundreds of individuals that have been helped through nominations from readers like you. None of it happens without someone noticing first and speaking up. "We don't just send checks," says Steven Schowengerdt, CEO and founder of City Lifestyle.
“We send a message: You are seen, you are loved, and you are not forgotten.” Together with City Lifestyle President Matthew Perry, Steven has helped shape this into a tradition that goes far beyond the holiday season. "This is about community," Matthew says. "We believe we've been blessed, so now we get to be a blessing." Often, the person making the nomination gets just as much out of the experience as the recipient. There's something powerful about being part of the reason someone else's burden got lighter, especially when that need might have otherwise gone unnoticed. The campaign is completely confidential. No names are ever shared or publicized, and nominating someone is as simple as telling us their story. We are looking for those in our communities who fall between the cracks of getting help, and together as a community, we can meet those needs.
Nominations open November 1st and close December 3rd. To nominate someone in your community, follow @CityLifestyle on Instagram and find the form in our bio, or visit KingdomBuildingFoundation.org.
This season, giving starts with you. Let's do it together. Nominate someone in need today.

A Beautiful THANKSGIVING TABLE, Made Easy ARTICLE BY ANGELA BROOCKERD STYLE AND TIPS BY MARY CAROL GARRITY AND REBECCA WOOD PHOTOGRAPHY BY JANIE JONES There is something about a beautifully set Thanksgiving table that makes the holiday feel a little more special. With a few smart choices, you can pull together a table that looks like it took all week when really it came down to picking the right pieces and letting them work together.
START WITH YOUR TABLECLOTH AND CENTERPIECE Before you worry about napkins, place cards or which fork goes where, pick your tablecloth and centerpiece first. Those two choices set the tone for everything else and make the rest of your decisions so much easier. If you are hosting a larger crowd, don’t be afraid to push a couple of tables together and use a single long tablecloth to unify the space.
MIX YOUR PATTERNS AND TEXTURES One of the easiest ways to make a table feel curated instead of too matchy-matchy is to mix your dish patterns. Layer in a few different china patterns, add texture with rattan chargers, and let a mix of materials do the work.
LET THE CENTERPIECE TELL A STORY Your centerpiece does not need to be complicated to make an impact. Mixing botanicals with a touch of nature such as branches, greenery or seasonal produce, is almost always a win.

“ WITH A FEW smart choices, YOU CAN PULL together A TABLE THAT looks like IT TOOK ALL WEEK WHEN really IT CAME DOWN TO PICKING THE right pieces AND LETTING THEM work together.” If your table is full and space is tight, think about height instead of spreading out. A single showstopping serving piece, like a large tureen, can act as the centerpiece on its own, especially when you are seating a big group and need the extra room for food.
DO NOT SKIP THE SMALL DETAILS A few simple additions go a long way toward making guests feel like the evening was planned just for them. Place cards and printed menus are an easy way to elevate the table and give guests a little anticipation for what is coming. Candlelight is non-negotiable too. If you only have time for three things, make it these: • Linens • A centerpiece with fresh florals or seasonal produce • Candlelight Those three alone can take a table from everyday to holiday ready.
EXTEND THE TABLE WITH A DESSERT STATION
CONTINUED >
Setting up a small coffee and dessert station just off the main table gives guests a reason to get up and mingle a little before settling in for something sweet. If baking is not your thing, a pie from your favorite local bakery, displayed on a pretty stand with the packaging removed and a few fresh garnishes like sliced apples or greenery, will look just as elevated as something homemade.
THE REAL SECRET TO A GREAT THANKSGIVING TABLE At the end of the day, the details matter, but the host matters more. Prep as much as you can ahead of time so you are not scrambling on the day of. Greet guests with a cocktail or a few small bites to kick off the evening, and give yourself permission to actually enjoy the people you invited. One last tip: before you start decorating, take a walk around your yard. Branches, leaves and greenery you already have on hand can be some of the prettiest and most personal additions to your table, and they cost nothing at all. NOVEMBER 2 0 2 6 | C I TYL I FE STYL E . The holiday season is all about bringing people together, and nothing gets a gathering started like a beautifully arranged charcuterie board. PLAN YOUR PERFECT SPREAD
When choosing a board, consider your guest count and whether charcuterie will serve as an appetizer or a larger part of the meal, says Hess. Graze Craze offers sizes ranging from individual portions to larger boards serving up to 20 guests as appetizers. Premium boards feature double the meat and cheese for a heartier spread, while sweet boards offer a delicious dessert option. The team can also accommodate ingredient substitutions and certain dietary restrictions with advance notice.
SPEND LESS TIME PREPARING, MORE TIME CELEBRATING
Graze Craze uses Boar’s Head meats and cheeses, fresh produce, and house-made dips and sauces to create colorful, flavorful arrangements. Hess recommends placing holiday orders early, ideally at least 24 hours in advance. With convenient pickup and delivery options, hosts can spend less time preparing and more time enjoying family and friends. Explore the full menu and place your holiday order at grazecraze.com.
