Dad-venture Awaits: June Edition Hot Off the Press!
Dear Readers,
With summer knocking on our doors, it’s time to crank up the fun-o-meter in Bridgewater and dive headfirst into the sunshine season! But before we embark on our sunny adventures, let’s take a moment to celebrate the unsung heroes of the family realm – dads! It’s Father’s Day this month, and this special occasion gives us the perfect opportunity to celebrate both the dads and father figures in our lives.
Personally speaking, witnessing my husband, Jake, embrace his role as a dad to our four amazing daughters fills my heart with even more love and admiration for him. He may not be perfect, but he’s perfect for our family.
Dads are the ultimate architects of summertime shenanigans, infusing our days with laughter. Who can resist a good dad joke? Here are a few classics to brighten your day:
1. Why did the golfer bring two pairs of pants? In case he got a hole in one!
2. What do you call fake spaghetti? An impasta.
3. Why couldn’t the bicycle stand up by itself? It was two-tired.
4. Why don’t scientists trust atoms? Because they make up everything!
5. I only know 25 letters of the alphabet. I don’t know Y.
6. Why don’t some couples go to the gym? Because some relationships don’t work out.
7. What do you call cheese that isn’t yours? Nacho cheese!
Now that we’ve had our fill of cheesy jokes, let’s raise a toast to the dads who make every moment brighter. To all the dads out there: Thank you for being the sunshine in our lives, the laughter in our days and the true heroes of summertime fun.
Here’s to you, dads! Happy Father’s Day, and let’s make this summer one for the books!
With laughter and sunshine,
June 2024

T H I NK PINK!
Danny Gregoire, owner of JayDan Services, always believed in giving back to the community his company serves. Whether it is small donations to local organizations or his annual contribution to The Frances Foundation for Kids Fighting Cancer, Gregoire seeks ways to make life better for people in need.

But last October, he added a creative twist. Enter the pink Dumpster.
JayDan Services provides full demolition services to businesses and residences and also rents Dumpsters as part of their operations. “I learned about the great work being done by Dance for the Cure, a volunteer organization that supports breast cancer patients in Hunterdon, Mercer, Middlesex and Somerset counties,” Gregoire says. “And I decided to paint one of my Dumpsters pink and donate $25 each time it was rented to Dance for the Cure.”
Gregoire launched the campaign last October and is collecting funds from rentals through October 2024, when he will make a lump-sum donation. “People can request this Dumpster, but we will continuously rent it out to keep the donations going,” he says. “It will always be onsite somewhere, whether it is residential, commercial or industrial.”
“We are so grateful for this partnership, which was brought about by Melanie Dare of Salon Dare in Hillsborough, as she had been a long-time supporter of Dance for the Cure,” says Joanne Liscovitz of Dance for the Cure. “Danny loved the idea of helping a local, 100 percent volunteer charity. All the money we raise helps breast cancer patients in need in Somerset, Hunterdon, Middlesex and Mercer counties.”

Danny, his wife, Melissa, and daughter, Isabella
JayDan Services began in 2010 as a small clean-up business that grew. “I had a truck and was doing work like cleaning out sheds, garages and basements,” Gregoire says. “Then, I started taking down people’s pools, sheds and decks. From there, it grew to a full line of interior and exterior demolition services, from residential to commercial buildings. We’ll strip the whole house or do the whole demo and take down the entire building.”
The work is not limited to structures: JayDan also clears properties of trees and landscaping. Their service area includes North New Jersey, from Bergen and Passaic counties, down to Somerset, Middlesex and Hunterdon counties.
“People doing their own demolition can rent our Dumpsters,” he notes. “But remember to ask for the pink one.”

Traditional Mexican Food, Innovative Tex-Mex and Ebullient Dining Await at Casa Luna

The sun is shining. The weather is warm. You’ve resurrected your shorts and sunglasses. You’re ready to celebrate the heralding of the summer season.
The best way to experience the foodie town of Somerville is sitting outside on an expansive patio, laughing with those you love, people-watching and savoring fresh, innovative food.
A perfect vantage point is the wrap-around patio at Casa Luna, where you can dine surrounded by greenery and exotic lilies. If you have not been to the restaurant in a while, you’re in for a surprise.
Over the past year, there have been a number of changes—décor, menu, vibe—but one thing remains the same: its unique spin on an eclectic mix of traditional Mexican food and Tex-Mex favorites.
Established in 2012 by Raziel Gonzalez and his wife, Marie, the family-run BYOB is taking their business to the next level with the expertise of general manager Chad Landsberg, who tracks food trends and has introduced ideas such as bar-style mocktails inspired by traditional Mexican cocktails like a Mojito or Sangria.
At its heart, the menu is authentic. Gonzalez grew up on a dairy farm in Mexico and immigrated to the United States after graduating high school.
He began his restaurant journey as a kitchen manager at Charlie Brown’s Fresh Grill, where he rose to head chef in two years. This is where he met his “future wife”—he says that was his thought when he first saw Marie—and where the couple began dreaming of owning a restaurant themselves.
Today, with over 50 years of experience between them, the couple prides themselves on excellent customer service when hiring staff and consistency in experience. They continue to evolve and expand.
Together, Gonzalez and Landsberg have elevated the dining experience through new décor. There is a vibrancy when you walk through the restaurant doors, with color radiating from the ceiling to the walls, which are adorned by larger-than-life depictions of sugar skulls, a traditional folk art from
southern Mexico. “Mexican culture is all about life and color,” says Landsberg. “I’m a huge fan of sugar skulls, so I wanted to incorporate them into the new design. People walk in and are just blown away.”
Although menu favorites remain—don’t worry!— Landsberg has been innovating. “I wanted to take classical Mexican dishes and give them a twist or use them as inspiration for something new,” he says. “For example, Southwest Smash Tacos is a play on a Tex-Mex–style burger. I played with fresh chilis and a great aioli.” (Note: You can make this dish gluten-free by opting for the corn tortilla.)
Another popular addition is the Poblanos Ranchero. “Poblanos are absolutely delicious when cooked properly, and I wanted to create a dish that would make them shine,” says Landsberg. “This was a dish that I would make on the fly when I was hungry and wanted something healthy. One day, I made it and shared it with the owners to see what they thought. They cleaned the plate. They loved it. We put it on the menu, and it really took off. It is very popular especially with our vegetarian customers.”
The menu will slightly shift with the seasons: Expect lighter dishes in the summer and heartier fare in the winter.
The restaurant also is boosting its catering business, especially for corporate customers, and growing its presence on social media. “I love having new guests come in and say they are there because they saw a dish on Facebook or Instagram and it looked so good they had to try it,” Landsberg says.
Casa Luna is capitalizing on its patio space by planning events; one planned for this summer is with local artist Chad Fandel who will display his art.
“I think we have the best patio downtown—it’s perfect for special events,” says Landsberg. “It’s great that we can collaborate with other business owners in the community and help each other out.”

FOR DECADES, THE MARTINSVILLE RESCUE SQUAD HAS SAVED— AND CHANGED—LIVES
ARTICLE BY BY NANCY A. RUHLING

LIZ POLO, HAVANA PHOTOGRAPHY
For nearly seven decades, the Martinsville Rescue Squad has been coming to the aid of residents in crisis.
Now, the 20-member squad is sending out its own 911 call to the community asking for help. Established in 1957, the nonprofit squad, which delivers its services for free, is in dire need of donations and of volunteers to do everything from driving ambulances to keeping the books and making out the schedules.

“There’s no payroll, and we all donate our time,” says Chief George Nowakowski, who joined the squad 11 years ago as a volunteer driver. “Right now, we need to replace one of our three ambulances.”
Nowakowski, a longtime Martinsville resident who has a full-time job as a software engineer, got interested in the squad when his mother was ill.
“I was taking her to doctors and the emergency room,” he says. “I felt useless because I couldn’t help her.”
But it wasn’t until the Martinsville Rescue Squad showed up at his church that he decided to sign on.
“They brought an ambulance and were asking for volunteers,” he says. “My three kids thought it would be cool if I did it. I’ve found that it’s nice to give back and offer some service to the community.”
He started out driving the ambulances, which required him to learn CPR.
“I was a little concerned because as a child I got queasy when I was around blood,” he says. “But I surprised myself because I learned to handle it well in person.”
Later, he spent a semester earning his EMT certification. Although the squad paid for the costly course, it was a challenge.
“I had three young kids and a full-time job,” he says. “It was an accelerated course—it only took three months—so it was really intense.”
For the last four years, Nowakowski has been the squad’s chief, the organization’s top position.
In addition to running the squad’s operations, Nowakowski works four 12-hour night shifts, from 6 p.m. to 6 a.m., every week.
“When I see the look of relief on people’s faces, that in itself is rewarding.”
“It’s not always busy every shift,” he says, adding that he stays at home until his pager sends him into action. “I live about two miles from the station.”
And then there are times that he immediately drives from one call to another, hardly able to catch his breath. Recently, he calmed a woman who was having a panic attack and hyperventilating. And he’s come to the aid of car accident victims.

“Part of what keeps me motivated is the fact that there’s somebody in need in a desperate situation,” he says. “When I see the look of relief on people’s faces, that in itself is rewarding.”
And then there are the people who don’t make it.
“We can’t save everyone,” he says. “Statistically, if we’re performing CPR, it’s serious and the odds are against you. But at least we were there for them and tried to revive them.”
Through the years, generations of the same families have served as volunteers in various capacities, and some of the current members of the Martinsville Rescue Squad have been donating their time and expertise for decades.
John Mopper, a licensed psychotherapist and with his wife, licensed psychotherapist Michele Mopper, is the co-owner of Blueprint Mental Health in Somerville, joined in the summer of 2022.
He’s on duty every Friday from 6 a.m. to 6 p.m.
“I don’t have a ton of extra time on my hands, but I made time because I wanted to do something to give back to the community,” he says, adding that he has lived in Bridgewater for most of his life. “I’m the type of guy who likes to get out and help people.”
During his short tenure, he has dealt with every kind of emergency: from helping an elderly fall victim to trying to revive people and aiding those injured in car crashes.
“The squad is about local people caring about the community,” he says. “We arrive on the scene at what can be the worst day of someone’s life and we impact change in some positive way. There’s no reward better than that.”
Calling it an honor to be part of the squad, Mopper says that the work is “rewarding and can also be extremely exciting. You get a surge of adrenaline rushing to the call. The huge wins make you feel like you’re on top of the world.”
Like Nowakowski, Mopper started out driving ambulances, learned CPR, earned his EMT certification and has no intention of quitting.
Although Nowakowski recently turned 60, he has no plans to cut his shifts on the squad. In fact, when he does retire, he’s probably going to make it his full-time job.
“It’s rewarding,” he says. “I get direct feedback and I see the direct impact I have on people’s lives.”

TO VOLUNTEER OR DONATE:
The Martinsville Rescue Squad is seeking more volunteer ambulance drivers and first-aid assistants to respond to 911 calls. No medical experience is necessary; the squad provides free training. There also are a number of business administration positions available.
Volunteers are not paid, but they are eligible for a retirement plan and tuition reimbursement. In addition, certain township fees are waived.
The Martinsville Rescue Squad is financed solely by donations. The squad’s most urgent need is the replacement of an ambulance, a $300,000 expense. To apply as a volunteer or to make a tax-deductible donation, call 732-469-1505 or visit BridgewaterEMS.org

Vincent Oliveri with his wife, Kaylie, and dogs Enzo and Phoebe
“
“We are so happy living here. And doing what I love.”
If there’s one thing that Vincent Oliveri loves more than fixing appliances, it’s seeing the relief on his customers’ faces when they can get back to their daily lives.
Let’s face it: When an appliance breaks, our lives stop. Laundry piles up. Take-out dishes and Uber Eats replace home-cooked meals. Water pools on the floor. And perhaps worst of all, food is at risk of spoiling.
Oliveri, owner of Elite Appliance Repair in Branchburg, takes a customer-oriented approach to getting everything back in working order.
“Before I even come out, I set up a virtual video consultation so the homeowner can show me the issue they are having with their appliance. This is a unique service that allows me to diagnose the problem virtually. Sometimes, I can even fix it without ever going out and without a charge to the homeowner,” he says. “By understanding the problem before I go onsite, I can make sure I have the correct parts. This saves clients time and the possibility that they may have to take more than one day off of work to accommodate a consultation and a repair. It’s the experience I give to the customer that drives me. I love solving problems.”
Don’t let Oliveri’s youth fool you. He has been fixing appliances for almost 20 years, starting when he was 16. “When I was a teen and looking for work, my baseball coach hired me to help him with his appliance repair company. I started learning then and also spent two years as a service technician at PC Richard & Sons and serviced a large portion of New Jersey,” he says.
After sustaining a baseball injury at college, Oliveri returned to work with his former coach at his company full time. “Soon, I was pretty much running his company,” he says. “In 2021, I decided to start my own business and have been working for myself full time since last year.”
At Elite, if your appliance breaks, Oliveri will fix it and guarantee the parts for a year.
The biggest issues he sees are squeaky dryers, ovens and microwaves that won’t heat, refrigerators and dishwashers that leak and clogged washing machines that won’t drain since homeowners do not know to change the filter. “We also see issues like mold build up on the rubber boot around front load washing machine doors,” he says.
When a job is complete, Oliveri leaves customers with advice to keep their appliance in working order. “I show them how to maintain the appliance to prevent the problem in the future,” he says. “It’s important that people do not wait to call for a repair—even if the issue is small, like a little water on the floor. Often, something that may appear insignificant can cost you hundreds of dollars in repairs if you let it go too long.”
Oliveri, who runs Elite with his wife, Kaylie, moved to the area from Denville last June. “We love the community, going into downtown Somerville and taking our dogs, Enzo and Phoebe, to the local parks,” he says. You can often find the couple dining at Masa Sushi in North Branch or Vinnie’s Pizza and Pasta in Branchburg.
“We are so happy living here,” he says. “And doing what I love.”

Zoned Sports Academy Trains Ballplayers and Their Coaches, Too
ARTICLE BY AMANDA CASTLEMAN PHOTOGRAPHY BY LIZ POLO (HAVANA PHOTOGRAPHY)
Sometimes the heart is willing, but the learning curve is steep. Enter Zoned Sports Academy, which not only helps young athletes excel, but also the relatives and guardians who coach them.
“About 20 percent have never even played the game,” explains Zoned’s CEO and co-founder Malcom “Duke” Baxter III. “And around 38 percent haven’t coached before. It’s amazing they’re donating their time. So we’re trying to help people volunteer for something they may not be good at or have never done.”

“We’re educating, motivating and inspiring players of all ages and skill levels every day.”
Baxter is well-poised to coach the coaches. He was a pre-season All-American at what is now Florida Community College at Jacksonville, where he tied the all-time-hits record with 172 across two years. He then played at the University of North Florida, setting the NCAA record with 31 doubles in a single season.
Next, he spent three years in the minor leagues, first with a now-defunct Wisconsin team (Madison Black Wolf, where he was 1997’s rookie of the year) and then as a utility infielder for the Somerset Patriots. “Since I was six years old, I had a dream to make it to the big leagues,” he says. “While that dream passed me by, I have dedicated my personal and professional life to helping players of all ages, skill levels and body types reach their ultimate potential.”
He holds patents for baseball and softball training aids and co-wrote the book Taking on the Title of COACH Baxter also teaches through Zoned’s online program Dominate the Diamond. Its app conveys skills like how to create practice plans, run those sessions and teach throwing, hitting and fielding.
The advice stretches from the physical to the psychological, “the stuff no one ever talks about” like dealing with irate parents and kids throwing their helmets. And sometimes it even means overriding interjections screamed from the stands. “That’s the kind of stuff that makes coaching fun, but very challenging,” he notes.
Recently, Baxter and his team began traveling to teach hands-on workshops for rookie coaches, including some in Maryland and Virginia.
For in-person clinics and training sessions back home, Zoned has welcomed kids to its baseball and softball training ground in Bridgewater since 2002. It boasts a 28,000-squarefoot facility, including two full-sized playing fields, nine batting cages and a pro shop. It acquired a Proteus workout machine that tests balance, strength and power. Launched in 2018, this system allows athletes to train and rehabilitate with “3D” resistance, instead of less fluid and integrated movements like squats or bench presses.

Each winter, the academy does pre-season training for 32 high school softball and baseball teams. “That’s always super fun,” Baxter says. It has also launched Baseball Buddies, a program that lets Little Leaguers trod the turf of pro fields and get autographs from superstar players. Last year, the kids visited the Somerset Patriots’ dugout before the team faced off against the New York Yankees, welcomed the players to the field and stood beside them during the national anthem.
Zoned doesn’t stop when the school year does. Instead it welcomes sports fans to summer camps, running Monday to Thursday, 9 a.m. to 1:30 p.m., from the last week in June until the first week of August. “We have baseball and softball programs in different locations,” Baxter explains. “We give motivational talks, bring out special guests and run drills and skills. Then there’s competitions, challenges like water balloons and home run derbies, lunch and all that good stuff. Some weeks are outside and some are inside.” Students can sign up on a weekly basis, though the academy offers discounts for enrolling in multiple sessions.
Baxter is also proud of their new nonprofit, which launched in 2023: the Diamond Dreams Foundation. It now funds scholarships for college-bound players, as well as helping underfunded Little League programs and kids who can’t afford to join the academy’s teams.
“We’re working hard here,” he says. “We’re educating, motivating and inspiring players of all ages and skill levels every day.”
