LIFESTYLE LETTER
Starting the Year with Intention Happy New Year, Bridgewater! This time of year always makes me pause and take stock of where I am and what I want for the months ahead. For a lot of people, that means resolutions. For me? Not so much. I’ve learned I’m better off skipping the sweeping declarations and sticking to small, steady choices—the kind that feel realistic in a house with four daughters, a busy home and a to-do list that somehow multiplies overnight. That idea of choosing well—not perfectly, not dramatically, just intentionally—feels especially fitting as we dive into our Health & Wellness Issue. January can be a tough month: it’s cold, it’s dark and we’re all trying to find our rhythm again after the holidays. So this issue is designed to feel grounding, supportive and, hopefully, encouraging. We’re starting with a story that embodies that spirit beautifully. Turn to page 18 for The Frequency of Gratitude, our cover feature on Christina Flanagan Bistis, whose work blends mindfulness, movement and genuine connection. Christina reminds us that wellness isn’t about checking boxes—it’s about presence, gratitude and creating space to breathe. When winter wellness feels like a moving target, we’ve got you covered. Turn to page 26 for Winter Wellness Toolkit, where holistic health coach Cara Zamorski shares practical ways to stay healthy through the cold-and-flu stretch. Simple shifts, not overhauls. That’s the theme this month. And because confidence can be its own form of self-care, we’re spotlighting a local favorite making a big impact. Turn to page 14 for Where Confidence Meets Skin Health, featuring Energy Wax Spa and their thoughtful approach to skincare, confidence and long-term skin wellness. You’ll also find this month’s Bridgewater City Lifestyle Readers’ Choice Awards, celebrating our community’s top picks in health and wellness. Categories include Best Boutique Fitness, Best Dental Practice, Best Gym, Best Medical Spa, Best Mental Health Provider, Best Optometrist, Best Orthodontist and Best Physical Therapist. Turn to page 10 to see who our readers selected. And don’t forget to follow @bridgewater_somerset_hills to vote in the categories coming up each month. As we step into this new year, I’m wishing you moments of clarity, pockets of calm and choices that feel good—one steady step at a time. Thanks for starting 2026 with us.

WHERE CONFIDENCE MEETS SKIN HEALTH ENERGY WAX SPA ELEVATES WAXING INTO A LUXURIOUS, RESULTS-DRIVEN SKINCARE EXPERIENCE.

S ELF CA R E | BEAUTY
At Energy Wax Spa in Somerville, co-founders Miranda Gilbert and Bresha Marvray have transformed waxing into a luxurious, skin-focused experience. Their philosophy is simple yet powerful: everyone deserves to feel amazing in their skin. By elevating waxing beyond routine hair removal, the spa delivers lasting smoothness, healthy exfoliation, and renewed confidence. After a decade in the beauty industry, Gilbert saw a need for more personalized, results-driven waxing. Marvray, once a loyal client, shared her passion and partnered with Gilbert to create a haven where clients enjoy
tailored treatments designed for their unique skin types. The result is Energy Wax Spa’s signature five-step “Spa Glow Treatment,” a rejuvenating service that combines comfort, cleanliness and long-term skin health—especially popular for bikini and underarm areas. The spa’s specialties include facial and full-body waxing, with standout services such as eyebrow shaping, Brazilian waxes, and full-leg treatments. Their proprietary hard wax blend is hydrating and gentle, minimizing irritation while effectively removing hair from the root to promote finer regrowth. Every preand post-wax product is dermatologist- and gynecologist-tested and hand-selected by the owners to ensure a seamless experience. Education and empowerment are central to the Energy Wax Spa approach. Technicians provide custom skin analyses and teach clients about aftercare and long-term maintenance. “Waxing is more than just removing hair—it’s a self-care ritual,” says Gilbert. Exfoliation is key, helping prevent ingrown hairs and improving product absorption. The spa’s curated line of cruelty-free aftercare products supports this philosophy, featuring clean, professional brands like Fur and Browcode. Staff favorites include Fur’s KP Scrub, which uses both physical and chemical exfoliation for radiant skin, and the Ingrown Concentrate Oil and Ingrown Serum, which soothe and brighten even the most sensitive areas. All technicians are Fur Pros Studio-certified, trained in addressing hyperpigmentation, ingrown prevention and post-wax rejuvenation.
Energy Wax Spa also takes sanitation seriously. Each technician follows strict Barbicide-certified protocols, using sanitized tools and fresh implements for every client. Their private treatment rooms are designed for comfort, making even first-timers feel at ease. “We want every client to feel safe, confident, and celebrated,” says Marvray. “Our mission is to make waxing feel like an act of self-love.” For new clients, the spa recommends allowing two to three weeks of hair growth before a session and scheduling regular appointments every three to six weeks to maintain results. Avoiding lotions, shaving and sun exposure before waxing, and exfoliating afterward, helps achieve smoother, longer-lasting results. With its commitment to excellence, cleanliness and care, Energy Wax Spa has become a standout in the local beauty scene—a place where waxing meets wellness, and every client leaves glowing from the inside out. The Frequency of Gratitude How Christina Flanagan Bistis shares Holistic Wellness through Senior Care and beyond For Christina Flanagan Bistis, health and wellness are more than a professional pursuit— they are her way of life. As the Community Outreach Coordinator for Avalon Assisted Living and Bridgeway Care at Home, she has built a career blending compassion, connection, and holistic wellness. Christina’s journey made an intentional pivot in 2017, when she returned to school to study Integrative Wellness. “I wanted to learn holistic modalities that could provide tranquility for the mind, body, and soul,” she says. What started as curiosity soon became her calling. She immersed herself in meditation, yoga, and ancient therapeutic practices—finding her purpose in helping others create a practice to sustain balance in a fast-paced world. Her professional journey became even more inspired once she began working at Life Time Bridgewater, where she joined as a Concierge in 2019 and quickly became known for her positive and authentic energy. As she grew into an event coordinator and then a certified yoga teacher, she began sharing meditation, aromatherapy, and sound therapy with Life Time members. Parallel to this time in her unfolding, she found a deep fulfillment working with older adults, leading meditation sessions in senior care settings throughout Hunterdon and Somerset county. “Spending time with older adults became one of the most profound influences on my life. I learned how deeply seniors crave connection,
presence, and purpose—and I saw how therapeutic holistic practices were for them in the later years of their life,” she says. That realization led her to Bridgeway Senior Healthcare, where she now merges her love for wellness with community outreach. “Bridgeway and Avalon are family-owned/operated and mission-driven as a Continuum of Care which aligns with my mission as well,” Christina says. Through her work, Christina shares chair and mat yoga classes, breathwork, and sound therapy—or “guided instrument meditation,” as she calls it for her senior groups—to residents and the wider community. “I adapt the pace, but the essence is the same,” she says. “We focus on breath, intention, and gratitude, providing internal self-care for the whole person.” Her programs—such as Holistic Happy Hours and Community Meditation events—encourage connection through gentle movement, aromatherapy, and mindful discussion. She has also began sharing recordings of meditations through Bridgeway’s Holistic

Wellness online library, expanding access to therapeutic resources for the entire community as she shares the benefits of “Conscious Stillness” with anyone who tunes in. Christina believes Gratitude is the foundation of well-being. “We must be grateful first, and the rest will follow,” she says. Her personal brand, Live and Feel Gratitude, was born from that philosophy back in 2017 from her son’s initials and continues to shape her work, life, and energetic presence. Looking ahead to 2026, Christina plans to deepen her outreach by introducing Grief Preparation classes. At 36 years old, she sees people quietly struggling with grief in different ways—from the various chapters of loss, life transitions, identity shifts, and even the slow ache of watching a loved one’s health decline. She says that she has realized, “grief is inevitable, and it does not avoid anyone. With all the advancement in humanity, through psychology, technology, AI, and beyond- the emotional wellness within the chapter of loss has yet to be cultivated, or so that [she] has seen.” She wants to create a positive change within that realm and so Christina’s goal is to empower the community with the ability to strengthen their emotional fitness and learn how to, “hold gratitude and grief at the same time.” Her message for the new year is simple yet powerful: “Prioritize protein, whole foods, and laughter. Let the sun warm your cheeks, move your body, meditate, and stay connected. Wellness isn’t just what we eat or how we exercise—it’s who we share our time with and how we live and feel gratitude.” If you are interested to attend one of Christina's upcoming Yoga/Sound Baths or workshops, please visit https://www.bshcare.com/holistic-senior-care.html email her at Cflanaganbistis@bshcare.com, or follow Christina on Instagram @liveandfeelgratitude.

PLAY, PROGRESS, REPEAT
Walking into KidPT in Raritan, New Jersey, feels different from walking into a typical medical office. Instead of exam tables and sterile walls, families find swings, climbing structures, and play spaces filled with laughter and motion. One child rolls in with a bright smile, another skips toward the swings, and another greets their therapist using an AAC device. However a child moves or communicates, they’re met with warmth, curiosity, and respect. Here, therapy feels like exploration— because play is how children learn, grow, and connect.
WHERE MOVEMENT MEETS MEANING
Founded by Dr. Joni Redlich, a pediatric physical therapist with more than 25 years of experience, KidPT offers physical, occupational, speech, and feeding therapy for children with a wide range of developmental needs. But what truly sets KidPT apart is its philosophy—one that looks beyond what a child can’t do to discover their strengths and deeper potential. “I wanted to create a place where families could see their child’s strengths—not just the challenges,” Redlich says. “When we look deeper at behavior through the body’s lens, we start to understand how a child experiences the world. That understanding opens the door to growth, connection, and confidence—for the child and for the whole family.” As a neurodivergent person, Redlich brings both professional expertise and personal insight to her work. “I wanted to build a place where every child and every parent feels seen, understood, and included—where differences are celebrated and therapy is grounded in respect and joy,” she says.

INSIDE KIDPT’S JOYFUL APPROACH TO CHILD DEVELOPMENT
A TEAM BUILT ON SHARED VALUES
Alongside Redlich is a multidisciplinary team united by shared purpose. “We’ve built a team of like-minded professionals—people who are passionate about their fields and share the same values of neuro-affirming care,” Redlich says. “We focus on child-led sessions, play-based learning, and presuming competence—really valuing every child’s communication abilities, whatever form that takes. Our goal is to support the entire family.” Nina Britz, occupational therapy team lead at KidPT, oversees a team of four OTs. “Occupational therapy helps children build the skills they need for everyday life,” Britz explains. “That might mean developing the motor and sensory foundations for play, supporting focus and self-regulation, or learning to handle routines like getting dressed, writing, or joining in at school. We look at the whole child—their body, emotions, and environment—to help them participate more fully and confidently in the world around them.”
COLLABORATION BEYOND THE CLINIC
Britz emphasizes that progress doesn’t happen in isolation. “We really believe in involving parents, families, and even teachers in the treatment process,” she says. “It’s not a ‘once-a-week and everything’s better’ kind of situation. The more collaboration and reinforcement there is, the more progress the child will make.”
FROM WORRY TO HOPE
A FAMILY-CENTERED START
Each family begins with a Discovery Visit—a free, 30-minute session focused on what matters most to the parent. During that time, a therapist listens, screens, and offers guidance, which might include a full evaluation or a referral to another specialist. “We work with children from infancy through the teen years,” Redlich says. “That might mean helping a baby learn to lift their head or roll, supporting a child’s coordination or sensory needs, or guiding a teen toward more confidence and independence. Each child’s journey is different, and we meet them where they are.”
For Redlich, the ultimate goal of KidPT is to be a trusted space— one where families find not just therapy, but hope. “My hope is that the kids leave feeling more confident and empowered in their daily lives,” she says. “And that families move from worry to hope—that they see a path forward and feel reassured that things can get better. So many parents come to us feeling scared and uncertain, and it’s incredible to watch their confidence grow alongside their children’s.” At KidPT, every milestone—big or small—is celebrated. Because when a child grows in confidence, connection, and independence, their whole family grows too.

TRANSFORMATION THROUGH PLAY
Every day at KidPT, families see what’s possible when movement, connection, and understanding come together. A baby who once yelled in frustration because they could sit but not crawl is now happily exploring their world. A child who couldn’t express their needs is now using an AAC device to ask for what they want. A child who used to have stressful, tear-filled mornings with their parent is now getting dressed independently with the help of a visual schedule—bringing calm and confidence to the start of the day. These moments capture what KidPT is all about—helping children and families find confidence, connection, and hope through play and body-based learning. Progress isn’t just physical; it’s emotional and relational too. Every new skill is a step toward a more joyful, empowered life for both the child and their family. Winter Wellness Toolkit SIMPLE WAYS TO BOOST IMMUNITY
The cold, dark days of a New Jersey winter bring more than snow— they also bring peak cold and flu season. While we can’t control every germ we encounter, we can strengthen the body’s natural defenses. Holistic wellness reminds us that prevention isn’t perfection; it’s about helping the body stay strong, resilient and balanced. Think of your health like a toolkit. The more supportive tools you keep inside, the better equipped you are to handle what comes your way. This winter wellness toolkit is built on three pillars: immune-supporting supplements, nourishing foods and daily lifestyle habits. Together, they offer a well-rounded approach to meeting winter’s challenges.
IMMUNE-SUPPORTING SUPPLEMENTS
Supplements can’t replace healthy habits, but they can add support when your immune system is under pressure. Consider: Vitamin D3. Often called the sunshine vitamin, vitamin D plays a key role in immune defense. Levels tend to drop in winter when sun exposure is low, making supplementation helpful for many people. Vitamin C (acerola or camu camu). This antioxidant supports the production and protection of white blood cells. Natural sources from acerola cherries or camu camu are particularly concentrated. Quercetin + bromelain. Quercetin is a plant compound with anti-inflammatory and antiviral properties; bromelain (an enzyme from pineapple) may enhance absorption. Together, they can help modulate immune response. Zinc. Important for immune cell function and may help shorten cold duration when taken at the first sign of symptoms. Bovine colostrum. Rich in antibodies, growth factors and nutrients; sometimes used to prime immune defenses. Not suggested for those with milk or dairy allergies. Collagen. About 70% of the immune system resides in the gut. A quality collagen supplement may help support the gut lining, reduce systemic inflammation and aid joint and tissue repair. Before starting new supplements, check with a health care professional for proper dosing and safety.

NOURISHING FOODS FOR RESILIENCE
Food is the foundation of immune health. What you eat daily either strengthens defenses or leaves you more vulnerable. This season, focus on: Bone broth. Rich in minerals, amino acids and collagen; deeply nourishing for the gut. Colorful vegetables. Carrots, kale, peppers and beets are packed with phytonutrients that help fight oxidative stress. Citrus fruits and berries. Oranges, grapefruits and berries supply vitamin C and antioxidants that fuel immune response. Fermented foods. Sauerkraut, kimchi and yogurt support a healthy gut microbiome, which in turn supports immunity. Garlic and onions. Natural antimicrobials with compounds that help the body fight infection. Even small shifts—swapping a processed snack for an orange or adding a side of sautéed greens—can make a difference over time. A simple rule of thumb: if it comes in a box or bag, it’s likely processed and not ideal for optimal health.
LIFESTYLE HABITS THAT PROTECT YOUR HEALTH
Wellness isn’t only about what you take or eat—it’s also about how you live each day. These habits are simple and effective: Prioritize sleep. Aim for 7 to 9 hours of quality rest. During sleep, the body produces infection-fighting cells and repairs tissues. Wash hands frequently. A basic, powerful defense against germs. Pair with mindful hygiene, such as avoiding touching your face. Stay hydrated. Water helps flush waste and keeps mucous membranes moist, making it harder for viruses to take hold. Manage stress. Chronic stress can suppress immune function. Try meditation, gentle yoga or a few minutes of mindful breathing daily. Get fresh air and movement. A brisk walk outside boosts circulation, supports mood and strengthens immunity.

GETTING STARTED
Your winter wellness toolkit doesn’t have to be complicated. Start with one or two small changes—adding vitamin D or committing to an earlier bedtime. Over time, simple practices build resilience and confidence, helping you move through the season with strength. This winter, let your health be a gift you give yourself: steady energy, fewer sick days and the peace of mind that you’re actively supporting your body.

Every
STRETCH Inside the Pilates practice transforming bodies, minds and the Bridgewater community. As more people embrace sustainable, balanced lifestyles, physical and mental wellness continue to take center stage. Among the practices supporting this shift, Pilates has emerged as a standout — known not just for sculpting the body but for elevating overall well-being. Pilates offers a refreshing antidote to today’s sedentary routines. Its thoughtful blend of mobility, strength and mindful movement creates a gentle yet highly effective approach to wellness. Beyond the physical benefits, the practice provides mental clarity and stress relief, thanks to its emphasis on breathwork and a deeply supportive community environment. We spoke with Club Pilates Bridgewater owner Karen Spidare and Regional Director Mary-Kate Baulier to learn how their studio has shaped the local community and why Pilates remains such a powerful and beloved practice. Mary-Kate described learning Pilates as similar to “discovering a new language” — one that instructors help members understand step-by-step. Although classes are held in a group setting, Pilates remains a deeply personal practice, and listening to your body is essential. Every movement can be modified, ensuring members meet their personal best in every class. Club Pilates brings this philosophy to life through six diverse class formats designed to keep routines engaging and tailored. Karen highlighted options such as Center & Balance, a slow,

controlled stretch class, and Cardio Sculpt, a lively but low-impact jumpboard workout. Their most popular offering, Reformer Flow, blends reformer exercises with additional equipment to strengthen the mind-body connection. With four class levels available, members choose the guidance or challenge that best fits their needs. One-on-one private training sessions and personalized fitness planning through the front desk team offer additional customization. The Bridgewater studio has witnessed countless transformations, including a longtime member, Donna Lazartic, who recently celebrated her 2,000th class. The milestone was marked with a heartfelt studio celebration recognizing improvements in her overall health and stamina — including her ability to enjoy activities like pickleball. Her dedication has inspired both members and staff. Amid life’s fluctuations, connecting with members, celebrating milestones and hosting community events keeps the Club Pilates team grounded and energized. The studio offers more than a workout — it provides a community that enhances every aspect of life. Karen and Mary-Kate encourage locals to try a free Intro Class to experience firsthand how Pilates can strengthen both body and mind.

Dr. Vince Sferra
Unlocking the “Why” Behind Chronic Symptoms Inside NMR’s Functional Medicine Approach When patients walk into Natural Medicine & Rehabilitation (NMR) in Somerset, they’re often carrying more than symptoms—they’re carrying years of unanswered questions. Many have visited multiple specialists, completed standard labs and imaging, and still been told their results are “normal,” despite feeling anything but. That gap between traditional findings and lived experience is exactly where NMR’s functional medicine team steps in—led by Dr. Vince Sferra, founder and clinic director. A chiropractor with extensive training in functional and integrative medicine, Dr. Sferra has spent decades helping patients uncover the root causes of chronic, unresolved health concerns. His approach blends clinical
expertise, compassion and deeper investigative testing to reveal what standard evaluations often miss. “At its core, functional medicine is about uncovering the mechanisms driving a person’s dysfunction or disease,” Dr. Sferra explains. “Instead of stopping at symptoms, we ask why they’re happening—and what processes are fueling them.”
SEEING WHAT CONVENTIONAL LABS MISS
Patients who seek functional medicine care often struggle with long-standing issues: fatigue, digestive distress, joint aches, autoimmune reactivity, hormone imbalance or brain fog. These concerns aren’t always captured in routine bloodwork.

“Conventional labs diagnose pathology, which is critical,” Dr. Sferra notes. “But when those tests come back normal, patients are often told it’s genetics or stress—without any real testing or deeper evaluation. That’s not enough.” NMR uses specialized lab panels to identify underlying dysfunction, including stool analysis, adrenal and hormone profiling, micronutrient testing, inflammatory markers, gut and blood–brain barrier integrity and food immune-reactivity—not to be confused with allergy testing. “These labs, combined with detailed histories and lifestyle diaries, give us a fuller picture of what the body is struggling with and why,” he adds.

A THOUGHTFUL, THOROUGH FIRST VISIT
NMR begins with a modest-fee consultation designed to help patients experience the practice firsthand. “We learn enough to determine whether a functional medicine workup is truly the right path,” Dr. Sferra explains. From there, the team conducts a comprehensive review of medical history, questionnaires, previous labs and lifestyle patterns before ordering additional tests. When results arrive, patients receive a complete explanation of what the numbers mean—and how they connect to their symptoms. “Education is central,” Dr. Sferra emphasizes. “People deserve to understand what’s happening in their own bodies.”
THE “TRIAD OF HEALTH”
Once patterns are identified, NMR builds personalized care plans centered on what they call the Triad of Health: nutrition, movement and mindset. “The overwhelming majority of our recommendations are rooted in diet, nutritional support, physical activity, rest and stress-tempering lifestyle habits,” Dr. Sferra shares. “We like to say: you are what you eat, think and do.” Follow-up lab testing happens between two and six months later to measure progress and refine the plan.

COLLABORATION—AND INDEPENDENCE
While Dr. Sferra hopes for greater collaboration between functional and conventional medicine in the future, he believes most chronic cases can be effectively managed at NMR. “We don’t replace primary care, but we can handle the majority of issues patients come to us for,” he notes. “When needed, we absolutely consult specialists to ensure comprehensive care.”
THE REWARD: ANSWERS, CLARITY AND HOPE
For many patients, NMR represents the first time their concerns are heard in full—and the first time they see data that aligns with how they feel. “To help someone who has searched for answers for years is incredibly rewarding,” Dr. Sferra reflects. “Functional medicine isn’t alternative. It’s simply a deeper level of investigation—especially for the chronic issues conventional testing hasn’t explained.” Natural Medicine & Rehabilitation Address: 399 Campus Drive, Somerset Phone: 908-252-0242 Website: nmrnj.com

SEEING the Future CLEARLY How Dr. Sam Lee and Hillsborough Eye Care Are Redefining Vision, Wellness, and Community Connection in Somerset County ARTICLE BY CARLY MAC MANUS | PHOTOGRAPHY BY ELIZABETH POLO - HAVANNA PHOTOGRAPHY
For more than 40 years, Hillsborough Eye Care has been a cornerstone of the community—blending trusted expertise, advanced technology and a deep commitment to patient wellness. Now under the leadership of Dr. Sam Lee, the practice continues to evolve while honoring its long-standing reputation for personal, relationship-based care. Dr. Lee’s path to optometry was anything but ordinary. After years in finance and banking, he made the life-changing decision to pivot toward health care. “When the financial crash hit in 2008, I realized I wanted to do something more meaningful—something that allowed me to work directly with people,” Dr. Lee recalls. “Optometry gave me that opportunity to combine science, precision and human connection.” Since taking ownership of Hillsborough Eye Care, Dr. Lee has focused on maintaining the practice’s welcoming, community-oriented culture while expanding its scope of services. One key differentiator is the in-house optical lab, which allows the team to cut and finish lenses onsite. “Our in-house lab gives us full control over quality and speed,” he explains. “Patients appreciate knowing their glasses are crafted right here by people they know and trust.”

Hillsborough Eye Care also offers a thoughtfully selected range of exclusive frames not typically found in larger retail settings— reflecting the team’s belief that eyewear should blend comfort, function and personal style. But it’s their medical expertise that truly sets them apart. Dr. Lee and associate optometrist Dr. Janna Teytel specialize in dry eye treatment, medical eye care and low-vision therapy, using cutting-edge diagnostic tools and evidence-based treatment plans. “Eye health goes far beyond vision correction,” Dr. Lee emphasizes. “We’re seeing more patients struggling with dryness, inflammation and ocular surface issues that can impact daily comfort and long-term health. Our goal is to treat the cause, not just the symptoms.” Looking ahead, Dr. Lee and his team aim to strengthen Hillsborough Eye Care’s presence in both the eye care and skincare spheres, with a focus on expanding services like dry eye IPL (intense pulsed light) treatment. “There’s a natural overlap between eye care and skincare,” he notes. “Our mission is to provide comprehensive care that enhances both comfort and confidence.” Beyond the office, Hillsborough Eye Care remains deeply engaged in the community, sponsoring Hillsborough High School sports teams and supporting local events. “We’re proud to give back to the same community that has supported this practice for over four decades,” Dr. Lee adds. “We see generations of families here—grandparents, parents and now their kids. That continuity is what makes it special.” With longtime team members like Nicole Brezin, office manager, who has been part of the practice for more than 15 years; Raquel, an optician with over 40 years of experience; and Adrienne, returning to the office after two decades, the sense of family runs deep. “Our patients know us by name,” Dr. Lee reflects. “They know we’ll take the time to listen, to educate and to make sure they’re truly seeing their best.” As Hillsborough Eye Care looks to the future, its mission remains clear: to blend innovation with heart—and to help every patient see life more fully. AQUATICS: SAFE, SUPPORTIVE AND ACCESSIBLE
In Aquatics, Director Stephanie Johnson oversees programming for swimmers of every level. “We provide lessons and opportunities for all ages and abilities,” Johnson explains. With American Red Cross–certified staff and one of the lowest student-to-instructor ratios in Somerset County, safety remains central to every class. The aquatics center offers adaptive lessons, private and semi-private instruction, lap swimming and recreational swim opportunities. Saltwater pools, UV filtration and zero-entry access create a comfortable and inclusive environment. “Swimming can be the

FITNESS: A WHOLE-PERSON APPROACH
Programs include small-group training, specialty classes, personal training and community fitness events. Personal training continues to grow as members seek deeper guidance and accountability. “Training gives us the ability to meet members exactly where they are and build plans that strengthen confidence and long-term success,” Kichura notes. “It remains one of the most effective ways to develop healthy, lasting habits.” JFit’s class lineup features Barre and a robust selection of Les Mills programs. Group fitness also offers a supportive entry point for those who want to get moving and meet others. “Group classes give people a feel for our community, especially if the weight room feels intimidating,” Kichura adds.

As the new year begins, the JCC invites the community to discover a wellness journey that extends far beyond the gym — one built on care, connection and programs for every age and ability. Each January brings renewed motivation to build healthier habits and seek greater balance. At the Shimon and Sara Birnbaum Jewish Community Center, health and wellness are rooted in a shared commitment that unites people across all backgrounds. “Our goal is to provide a welcoming and inclusive environment where members can thrive,” explains Sarah Pollak, membership director. “We are here to help people become the best versions of themselves inside and out.” To kick off 2026, the JCC introduces a special New Year promotion: a $26 joiner fee for January. New members also receive a complimentary fitness orientation to help them navigate equipment, meet staff and explore the center’s offerings. “Our staff and members create a community that celebrates every milestone,” Pollak notes.

The JCC hosts the annual Somerset County Special Olympics swim competition and supports the Bridgewater Rising Tide Special Olympics Swim Team. “This partnership allows us to open our doors and give back,” Johnson adds. “Many of our swimmers volunteer as coaches and mentors — that’s what community is all about.”
SPORTS: MOVEMENT, TEAMWORK AND CONNECTION
The Sports Department strengthens JCC wellness offerings by promoting movement, skill development and teamwork. Adult basketball leagues bring players together in a competitive but friendly environment, while pickleball lessons and open sessions continue to grow. Youth tennis introduces children to foundational skills and coordination while building confidence. Together, these programs give members of all ages meaningful ways to stay active and connected.
A UNIFIED APPROACH TO WELLNESS
Collectively, the Fitness, Aquatics and Sports teams create pathways that support the whole person. Whether through structured training, a water fitness class or family-centered

activities, members can access tools that strengthen physical, mental and social well-being. “When fitness, aquatics and sports intersect, the result is balance,” Kichura reflects. “Through movement, mindfulness and connection, our members experience a deeper level of wellness.”
STAYING ACTIVE THROUGH WINTER
The directors encourage members to stay active throughout winter by focusing on small, attainable habits. Short walks, unplugged evening routines and family outings like holiday light walks help reduce stress. Johnson recommends indoor swim time for a peaceful break from the winter rush, while Pollak encourages families to join JCC holiday programs to stay engaged.
LOOKING AHEAD
Each department has clear goals for early 2026. Johnson plans to expand adaptive aquatics; Kichura aims to grow group fitness offerings and training options to fit varied schedules; and Pollak continues strengthening relationships with current members while welcoming new ones into the community. The JCC’s message for the new year is simple: Wellness thrives where people support one another. It’s found in the friendships formed between sets in the fitness center, the encouragement shared at the pool and the energy that fills the gym during group classes or sports leagues. This winter, the invitation is open: Come experience a community that moves with purpose, grows together and celebrates every step of the wellness journey. JANUARY 2 0 2 6 | C I TYL I FE STYL E .
