Cupid's Chronicle: A Letter from the Publishers Ah, February—the month that makes January look like the awkward third wheel of winter. As comedian Jim Gaffigan once said, “Without Valentine’s Day, February would be…well, January.” This February 14th marks our 15th wedding anniversary and a whopping 21 years since our first date. If someone were to ask if we’ve changed, we’d boldly declare, “Not at all!” However, the photo to the right suggests otherwise. Yes, I’ve added a few extra pounds, and Jake, well, let’s just say he’s been cultivating a more aerodynamic hairstyle. But who needs washboard abs and a full head of hair when you’ve got the secret weapon of a shared history? Now, while the world wonders if we’re planning something special for this milestone (spoiler alert: we’re not), we’d like to set the record straight. Our entire life is already one big, extraordinary celebration. We don’t wait for anniversaries or the planets aligning in some cosmic dance to have a good time. Just a few weeks ago, we were living our best lives in Cancun, rubbing shoulders with the crème de la crème of publishers at City Lifestyle’s President’s Club. Why bother with a romantic candlelit dinner when you can trade it for cocktails, laughs and the company of a wild bunch on a tropical beach, am I right? Speaking of celebrations, drumroll, please! In this issue, we’re thrilled to unveil the winners of our Annual Readers’ Choice Awards. Bridgewater spoke, and we listened as the community crowned the champions of local business glory. The Artful Brunch In the heart of Downtown Somerville, Brunch by De Martino—and its irresistible Latin-inspired menu—has become the go-to spot for foodies. Born into a family with deep culinary roots, chef-owner Martino Linares’ journey began when he started working in his late father’s beloved Somerville establishment, which was open for 25 years. And here, while you’ll find American breakfast and lunch dishes, it’s the Latin-inspired dishes where Linares shines. Linares’ decision to transition from dinner service to brunch hours was a bold move, especially in a town where Sunday often sees restaurants closing their doors for a well-earned break. However, Chef Martino embraced the challenge, driven by a commitment to quality and a desire to foster a better work-life balance. With the stakes so high, he knew his brunch offering had to be perfect. Those who have been following my appetite know that this is one of my favorite spots where everything is made from scratch. As plates glide through the room, awe-struck guests stop their servers to ask about each beautiful dish that just passed by. “It happens all the time,” Linares says. “Customers see the Blueberry Buttermilk Ricotta Pancakes or the Chicken and Waffles and start conversing with the table next to them about the plates and end up having hour-long conversations. That’s the power of food and what I love the most.” A standout is Linares’ take on the classic Chicken and Waffles, with the perfect combination of sweet and savory. Crispy buttermilk fried chicken thighs

find a cozy home between scallion-cheddar-buttermilk waffles, drizzled with his signature hot honey. And if you are up for it, add a sunny-side-up egg for the ultimate indulgence. This creation stands tall and is a real eye-catching masterpiece. Linares’ creativity extends beyond traditional American brunch fare. Long before birria became a culinary craze, it had a home on his dinner menu. The four-hour braised beef birria, boasting over 30 ingredients, creates undeniably rich and bold flavors, earning Brunch by De Martino the title of serving the best birria tacos in perhaps all of New Jersey. Linares doubles-down: “You haven’t truly experienced a birria taco until you’ve tried mine.” Another Latin-inspired favorite dish is the tres leches French toast, which is an homage to the tres leches cake introduced to Somerville by his father. Blueberry Ricotta Pancakes

8–10 servings

IN GR E D I E N T S • 2 c all-purpose flour • 2 tbsp granulated sugar • 1½ tsp baking powder • ¾ tsp baking soda • ½ tsp salt • 2 c buttermilk • 2 large eggs, beaten • 2 tbsp melted butter • 1 tsp vanilla extract • 1 tsp canola oil • Whole milk to thin batter whipped ricotta topping • 1 c fresh ricotta • 1 tbsp honey • 1 tsp lemon juice In a mixing bowl, combine all ingredients and whisk together until smooth. blueberry compote • 2 c blueberries • 3 tbsp water • 1/4 c sugar • 2 tbsp honey • 2 tsp lemon juice Combine 1 c of the blueberries, water, sugar, honey and lemon juice in a small saucepan. Cook over a medium heat for about 10 minutes. Add the rest of the blueberries and cook for 8 minutes more, stirring frequently.

ME THOD 1. Mix dry ingredients in large bowl. 2. Combine wet ingredients and mix until just wet. Don’t over-mix the batter. 3. Add milk if necessary a little at a time until batter is still thick, but pourable. 4. Use a ¼ cup measuring cup to scoop batter and pour on hot buttered griddle, Add 4 to 6 blueberries per pancake. 5. Cook pancakes until bubbles appear on the surface, then flip once. Remove pancakes and transfer to plate. Top off with whipped ricotta and blueberry compote. Add warm maple syrup as an option.

When Dulce Bakery & Café opened in Downtown Somerville last February, it became the “Instagrammable” spot where patrons could sample a diverse menu of Vietnamese influence and Latin flare. It took me much longer than I had hoped to make my official visit, but I finally had the pleasure of meeting Belle Mateo, a Dominican baker who co-owns Dulce with Mydung Ha, who is Vietnamese.

When you walk through the doors, Mateo’s vision and the décor sets a tone like no other. While the space itself is basic—an open-concept shell, wood flooring, white walls and an exposed brick accent wall—it’s the color pops makes this café so unique. From the brightpink accent sofa under a neon light that urges “Take a Seat Sweet Cheeks” to a staged piano and a mural portrait of Mateo with greenery as hair, each pocket has its own vibe and makes you feel like you’re in a different space, depending on where you sit. What I had expected to be a quick visit with some bites and a beverage turned into quite the tasting experience. I tried menu staples, fan favorites and weekly specials. Fast-forward hours later: I left with a full belly and feeling like part of the family. My taste buds were not prepared for this menu; many flavors and textures were new to me. The first thing that caught my eye was Dulce’s drink menu. As an iced coffee fan, I opted for the iced Vietnamese coffee, which is traditionally served cold and was impressively strong by way of a drip technique, incorporating rich flavor and mixed with a condensed milk for some sweetness. After this, I was fired up and ready to take on any pastry that came my way. I went down the counter window and basically tried one of everything. The Chicharron de Guava (Guava Cinnamon Stick) is a traditional Colombian sweet puff pastry. I had tried one of these for the first time earlier this year while traveling in Medellín, Colombia, and my gosh, this brought me right back with its buttery layers of flakes permeated with guava paste. This pastry set the tone for the rest of my experience as I moved on the Pandebono, one baked with

I have never tried something so magical with the recoil of a Tempur-Pedic pillow. This pastry got bonus points for being gluten-free. Next, I transitioned to one of the Vietnamese pastries with a flaky exterior and filled with veggies, ground pork or cheese. I selected the pork and found it sensational. CONTINUED >

And how could I resist the empanadas? You can see the crunch on the shell of these chicken- and beeffilled delicacies from their display. I chose the beef empanada and probably could have had three, but then I would have needed a nap there in the kitchen. For the finale, I had a visually and tastefully pleasing dessert: an airy cake layered with pistachio and ricotta creams separated by sponge cake with a crust decorated with crushed pistachios for added texture and dusted with powder sugar. I washed it down a cup of café con leche, a Spanish drink made with local beans and equal parts milk. I encourage you to visit—and better yet, bring a date for cute photos. Keep an eye out for Dulce’s pop-up events—they’ve hosted salsa dancing and a Barbie-themed night—or host your own private event. 2 c all-purpose flour 2 tsp baking soda 1/2 tsp salt 2 tsp ground cinnamon 3 large eggs 2 c sugar 3/4 c buttermilk 3/4 c vegetable oil 2 tsp vanilla extract 2 c grated carrots 1 (8 oz) can crushed pineapple, drained 1 (3 1/2 oz) can flaked coconut 1 c chopped pecans or walnuts

Preheat the oven to 350° F. Combine the first four ingredients in a dry bowl and set aside. In another bowl, mix the next five ingredients. Carefully blend both mixtures. Gradually incorporate the last four ingredients until fully blended. Pour the batter into two nine-inch pans and bake for 25 to 30 minutes. Enjoy the delightful aroma of homemade carrot goodness as it bakes. Que rico!

Curly Girls, listen up: You can go from work day to date night in five minutes flat. When Bridgewater City Lifestyle asked Dawn Coffin, owner of Beverly Hills Hair Studio in Martinsville, to create an easy weekday date night hairstyle, she immediately thought of a look that addresses challenges specific to women with naturally curly hair. “Women with curly hair have done their shampoo and conditioning. Their curls are already set in place,” she says. “When they go home, they can just twist it up and pin it in a way that gives them their desired look. It allows them to work with the hair they woke up with.” Updos are an easy way to get a romantic look without much effort. “Add a glitzy clip and let your curls cascade a bit in the front, and you’re ready for a night out,” she says. Coffin might not have curly hair herself, but she certainly understands it. “Both my children have curly hair, and I feel that embracing natural curls sometimes gets forgotten,” she says. Having fallen in love with the nuances of curls, Coffin went on to become Ouidad Certified for cutting and styling curly hair. Women can maintain the beauty of their spirals in the dry winter months by keeping their hair hydrated, shampooing only once or twice a week and using a little bit of curl cream to keep hair in place. Coffin recommends Motion. Lotion or Killer.Curls by Kevin Murphy. Her daughter, Amber, 22, is a fan of the updo. “When she goes out, she works with her natural curl pattern, twists it back or puts it up,” Coffin says. “She doesn’t have to rewash it after working all day and blow it out. She just kind of goes with it.”
