The Beauty of Spring in Bridgewater Spring officially begins this month, but let’s be honest, did we even really have a winter? As we bid farewell to the warmer-than-usual season, we welcome a new season of growth, renewal and, of course, exploration. There’s something special about the arrival of spring — the longer days, the blooming flowers and the promise of new beginnings. It’s a time to shake off the winter blues, dust off our hiking boots and hit the trails to explore the beauty of Bridgewater. As a mom of four daughters, I have always been passionate about finding ways to explore the town we call home. Whether we’re hiking a new trail or discovering a hidden gem of a café, the possibilities for exploration are endless, and it’s always exciting to see what we’ll discover next. As I reflect on my own experiences exploring Bridgewater, I am reminded of the importance of creating these moments with my family. It’s easy to get caught up in the hustle and bustle of daily life and the lure of our electronics, but taking the time to appreciate the beauty and charm of our town can be incredibly rewarding. And what better way to do that than with the people I love most in this world? In this issue, we feature an article on the Nature at Heart School, which is dedicated to fostering a love for nature and the outdoors in young children. It’s a reminder that exploring doesn’t have to be a grand adventure — it can be as simple as taking a walk in the park or observing the birds in our own backyard. We also offer tips on how to save money on your business tax returns, because let’s face it, we all need to save a few bucks from time to time. And last but not least, we’re excited to announce the winner of our “Exploring Bridgewater” photo contest. The winning photo perfectly captures the essence of this issue: the joy of exploration and the beauty of our town. Somerville Gets Even More Charming Somerville’s courthouse lawn got surreal with the new public art display “Charm Field.” The installation was created by Chiaozza, the award-winning, Brooklyn-based artist duo Adam Frezza and Terri Chiao, who explains the art represents “whimsical or magical tokens that have been placed upon the ground as if they were curious game pieces from the satchel of a mythical giant.” The installation was sponsored by the Downtown Somerville Alliance and the Somerset County Board of Commissioners. NATURE AT HEART SCHOOL TEACHES CHILDREN HOW TO TAKE HEALTHY RISKS

Remember those days when you would fling open your back door and race to join your friends exploring the woods, meadow, creeks and hills — never mind the weather — and just get yourself lost in nature until the dinner bell rang? Nature at Heart School is on a mission to ignite this passion for exploration in children. Founded in 2020 by Melissa Ferrao and Ruth Denys, teachers who loved to do outdoor activities with their kids, the school is a shared dream of inspiring children to connect with nature. “Over the years, I noticed how students in my class were having issues regulating emotions and I started to delve into the benefits of nature-based learning and outdoor play,” Denys says.

“Now, more than ever, this type of education is critical,” Ferrao says. “As teachers, we both noticed the more time children spent on technology and devices, the less engaged they were in with the world around them — people included — which can affect how they develop empathy.” Based at Chimney Rock Park in Bridgewater, the school offers a variety of weekly classes throughout the year for children 2 to 10 years old; during the summer, week-long camp classes are part of their programming. Younger children attend classes with their grown-ups and older children are dropped off at class. Supported by teacher Julie Jay and controller Devon Benavente, Ferrao and Denys provide a curriculum that balances unstructured exploration in a structured framework. “There’s a routine: The classes begin with time for exploration, followed by a gathering of grateful hearts during which we circle up and show our gratitude and start the lesson or introduce an idea or concept,” says Ferrao. “Then, a large portion of the time is spent engaging in an activity, like hiking in the forest. Next, we gather together and journal — whether through pictures or written words or both — to reflect on what was experienced in that class. We end with a final closing song.” The teachers focus on local plants, animals and elements so the children can take their knowledge from class to wherever they are — in town or in their backyard. The activities are designed to build resilience and confidence. Children are empowered by using their bodies for movement and balancing. They practice problem-solving and team-building while playing the games and improve their literacy with journaling. School takes place regardless of weather. “There’s no such thing as bad weather, only bad clothing,” Denys says. “You just need to make sure children have the right gear. They don’t get as cold as quickly as we assume.” “Parents should trust their children’s curiosity,” Ferrao says. “As adults, we should trust their ability to navigate situations. Maybe instead of being so quick to say ‘Be careful,’ say ‘How's your balance? You know, the rocks are a bit slippery, so be mindful as you're walking across them.’” Get out and explore at natureatheartschool.com.

There is something dynamic about working in the heart of a bustling, walkable downtown and being in an office with other dedicated professionals — even if they work for different companies. Welcome to the world of Office Evolution Somerville, a business center that has provided dedicated furnished office space, virtual offices and coworking space in downtown Somerville since 2014. “When I was looking for a location, I just fell in love with Somerville,” says owner Ulka Bhavsar. “I loved the whole downtown aspect. You have the train station, post office and courthouse in close proximity, making it a very convenient location. Plus, it’s so vibrant. The Downtown Somerville Alliance has been so great coordinating events in town.” Bhavsar, who has a master’s degree in commercial real estate, knows the importance of location for successful business operations. “I have always been passionate about real estate and entrepreneurship. I wanted to create a space that could foster creativity for all types of businesses, whether it’s a solo entrepreneur starting out or a larger business entity needing additional meeting space,” she says. There are several membership tiers, which allow people to use Office Evolution for their individual needs. “Members sign an agreement, not a lease,” says Bhavsar, who also is the business center manager at the Somerville location. “Some members just use our

mailing address. Maybe they are launching a business and don’t want their home address or a P.O. Box to show up when clients Google them. Or maybe they want to increase their geographical presence. If they have a location in Morristown, for example, they can use our Somerville address to show they also have a presence in Somerville, which helps them appeal to a broader base. Other members need a private, dedicated office for themselves or their teams. The offices come ready to go with furniture, internet, phone, phone number and a front office presence so it’s easy to get started.” Office Evolution also offers coworking plans in which members have 24/7 access to the business lounge (communal coworking area). “This plan appeals to people who are self-employed or whose companies have gone fully remote and want to work somewhere other than home,” she says. “Members can opt for only coworking or combine with the mailing address plan for their business.” The facility’s spacious conference rooms are perfect for companies seeking to have off-site meetings. Non-members can also rent a conference room by the hour or the day. “Large companies often use the conference room for business meetings, whether they are fully remote or just desire an offsite location. Both our conference rooms come equipped with large monitors and whiteboards, which is very conducive to presentations and brainstorming sessions,” Bhavsar says. “Our conference rooms offer benefits that hotels cannot.

size due to remote work. “They use our business spaces like a hub, where employees will rotate using our offices, but not at the same time,” she says. “People are getting tired of working in their homes. As someone who loves to cook — and loves empanadas — I had to check out The Bridgewater Café, which has been creating a buzz since it opened last year. Chef Arnold Hines has developed a following for his empanadas, and I knew I needed to get the tips from the pro himself, while respecting his family’s secret recipe. He invited me to come experience a crash course in empanada-making that I could share with Bridgewater City Lifestyle readers. 3 lbs ground beef 3 yellow onions 1 red bell pepper 3 garlic cloves 1 handful fresh parsley 3 packages Goya sofrito seasoning Premade empanada discos dough

directions: 1. Cook ground beef in skillet. 2. Sauté onions and garlic until brown, then added diced bell peppers. Sauté for an additional 15 minutes. 3. Add Goya sofrito seasoning to the vegetables. Mix well. Continue sautéing for another 3 minutes.

Forget take-out Chicken Tikka Masala! Akanksha Behari, owner of custom-art bakery CakeOholic in Basking Ridge, shares her recipe for this popular Indian dish. Visit her at facebook.com/aksbehari.

Chicken Tikka Masala (Butter Chicken) Serves 4

INGREDIENTS • • • • • • • • • • •

2 lb chicken thighs or breasts, cut into cubes* 1 tsp turmeric 1 tsp cumin powder Salt 2 tbsp minced ginger 3 tbsp minced garlic 1 tbsp Greek yogurt 2 tbsp vegetable oil 1 c tomato purée 1 c heavy cream ½-1 c whole milk (depending on desired consistency) • 2 tsp garam masala (curry powder) • Chili powder (to taste) • 1 tbsp dried fenugreek leaves (optional) • Fresh cilantro, chopped, for garnish • 1 c basmati rice * Vegetarians can substitute paneer or tofu for chicken

DIRECTIONS Marinate chicken with turmeric, cumin, salt, ginger, garlic and Greek yogurt for at least 30 minutes to 1 hour (overnight is best). In a pot, heat oil, add 2 tbsp minced garlic and 1 tbsp minced ginger and fry until it turns slightly golden brown. Add tomato purée and cook until oil separates out. Add cream and milk, bring to a boil and then simmer for at least 10 minutes. Add salt, garam masala and chili powder. Cover and simmer on low. In another pan, cook/braise the chicken (you also can do this in the oven or grill to char just the outer crust), keeping it slightly underdone. Add chicken to the gravy. Optional: Add dry fenugreek for a wonderful aroma and taste, cook for another 5 to 7 minutes until all the oil separates and the gravy tastes like heaven.

RICE Soak rice in water for at least 30 minutes. Fill pot with water and 1 cup rice. Once the rice and water comes to a boil, lower the heat and simmer for 5 minutes. Drain the rice using a strainer then cover the rice in the pot with a lid to allow it to cook in the steam. Serve over rice and garnish with fresh chopped cilantro. WHAT KIND OF SERVICES DO YOU OFFER BEYOND FILING THE RETURN? I teach my clients to live tax deductively by creating a lifetime tax strategy to save them money. By doing this, I save them a minimum, on average, of $15,000 per year or $75,000 over five years. With some clients who have bigger businesses, I’m able to save them $100,000 or more per year.

WOW! THAT’S AMAZING. HOW DO I GET ON YOUR SCHEDULE? I work with small-business owners who have at least $100,000 in annual salary and profits. The people who come to me are not neutral about taxes. They hate the very idea of paying taxes, and they come to me for a game plan to save them money. Of course, I not only prepare their business tax returns but also their personal tax returns.

IS IT TOO LATE TO GET YOUR HELP WITH 2022 RETURNS? It’s never too late. Ideally, I want to talk to my clients during the year so we can plan for the next tax year. Optimally, I take on new clients from April 16 to December 31 of every year. But if it’s close to deadline, we file an extension, do a deep dive on finances and come up with a plan.
