Home – Where Our Feet May Leave, but Not Our Hearts Home. So much is contained in that little four-letter word. Home is our grounding. Our base. Our launchpad. It’s where we start and end each day. And while the particulars look different for each of us, the meaning and value it holds for all of us is undeniable. Author Wendy Wunder said, “The magic thing about home is that it feels good to leave, and it feels even better to come back.” As we thought about home, we wanted to highlight what makes it special to our readers. That, of course, includes the aesthetic and design, but most importantly the people. It was three years ago this month that the world as we knew it completely changed. During the lockdown we were forced to spend more time in our homes than ever before, and many of us saw the value in upgrading our houses — in both small and big ways — to reflect exactly the environment we wanted to be in. To limit contact with the world, we also had to make decisions about who would be allowed in our homes. This had the amazing side effect of making families and small groups of friends closer than ever before. We had the chance to slow down and be intentional about who we spent our time with. Every month, we hear from readers who keep this magazine for longer than just the month labeled on the cover. It’s always fun to walk into someone’s house and see old issues sitting on the coffee table. They say they hold onto it for months as an accessory in their homes. Elevate Your Curb Appeal WHY HAVING THE RIGHT ROOF MATTERS

You could say Daniel Alte, owner of Alte Exteriors in Somerville, literally grew up on houses. His father, Jeff, who is now retired, founded the company in 1970. Today, Alte is a leading local expert in residential roof replacement and repair, as well as siding, gutter and skylight installation. He takes pride in guiding clients to the best products for their home — as well as educating them to keep them from making costly mistakes.

“If it has been 15 to 20 years since you have replaced your roof, it’s probably time to start thinking about scheduling a roofing contractor to talk about replacement,” he says. “When selecting roofing and siding, you want to consider the age and style of your home and neighborhood. You don’t want to select anything that might seem out of place.” Alte specializes in cedar shake, copper, slate, metal, flat and asphalt shingle roofs. And while asphalt is most common, he encourages homeowners to consider alternatives such as standing seam metal accents to give their home up-to-date curb appeal. “Standing seam can be steel, aluminum or copper. Each choice is durable, long-lasting and has a unique beauty that can add to your home’s value and curb appeal,” he says. “Standing seam roofs can easily last for 50 years, compared to asphalt shingles that last between 10 and 30 years. It resists high winds,

hail, rot, mold and mildew. It can also save you money on upkeep since it is maintenance free.” Cedar shake is a classic and timeless look that offers a rustic, high-end feel to the exterior of your home. This will set your home apart from others in your area. There are a variety of cedar shakes that can range from a uniformed look to a very rustic, hand-split look. Alte notes that homeowners are gravitating toward dark siding, such as charcoal gray and dark blue. “You should consider your home’s resale value when selecting colors,” he advises. The board and batten look and Cedar Impressions are popular exterior styles. Alte finishes the look with AZEK trim board. He uses a 3D visualizer that allows homeowners to see what different products and colors will look like on their home. Another way that homeowners can save is by looking at solar-powered products, which offer a 30 percent federal tax credit, he notes.

Finally, Alte warns to watch out for gutter guard schemes and scams, which he says have been on the rise over the past decade. He has seen scams that go beyond the obvious “too good to be true” schemes that can cause homeowners to pause before signing a contract. Red flags are people who knock on your door after storms, offer an extremely low bid, require payment upfront or a large down payment, tell you that a deal is only good “today,” ask you to buy the permits or to sign over the insurance check, or cannot produce proof of insurance. “Gutter guards are not a one-size-fits-all. We carry several different types of gutter guards because what is needed depends on the scenario,” Alte says. “If someone is offering you only one product, that’s a sign to walk away.” Slate Roof

The Owner of Barry’s Appliance Gives Expert Tips on Selecting an Appliance That Is Best for You

Purchasing an appliance is one of the greatest commitments you can make in your home. “It’s the beginning of a long relationship — sometimes 10 to 20 years,” says Jason Goldan, owner of Barry’s Appliance in Bridgewater. Goldan, whose grandfather started the family in the appliance business and who took over when his father, Barry, retired, has been raised on the art of helping homeowners select the right appliances for their unique needs and providing exceptional service after their purchase. For a half-century, Goldan and four generations of his family have prided themselves on educating customers so they make the right decisions for their unique situations. Here, Goldan discusses what you should consider when purchasing an appliance. Where You Buy. You want to purchase your appliance from a business that will educate you and ask the appropriate qualifying questions to help you narrow your choices to what will work best for you. The business should offer a competitive price and exceptional customer service. They should want to build a relationship with you that extends

Our customers know if there is an issue, they only need to make one call and we work to resolve it. What Fits Your Needs. With so many options available, selecting an appliance can be overwhelming. Professionals can help you narrow your choices to two or three appliances from which you can select whichever works in terms of cost, style and quality. I tell customers that how an appliance looks is also very important because they will be looking at the appliance far more than they will be using it. Cost and Quality. Most people buy an appliance somewhere in the middle of the price range. They might not be able to afford the $15,000 sub-zero refrigerator that will last 30 years, but they also often don’t want the entrylevel product that might last only five years. So, more often than not, customers will pay a little more for an appliance that is better quality and will last 10 to 15 years on average. Energy Efficiency. Appliances are already much more efficient than they were in prior years and must meet strict Department of Energy standards. Dishwashers, washing machines and refrigerators are rated on energy efficiency. The most efficient are Energy Star rated. However, consider this: An Energy Star refrigerator might cost $62 a year to run, versus only $72 for a refrigerator without the rating. That extra $10 a year is usually not a customer’s deciding factor. How Appliances Work. This is where working with professionals who can educate you is important. For example, people will come into the store with the thought of buying a top-loading washing machine without an agitator. However, washing machines need agitation and water to clean clothing. Many of these machines only use enough water to saturate the clothing. Clothes will not get as clean because they can’t get as agitated as a machine with an agitator that fills with water. People think these types of washers have a gigantic capacity when in reality if you were to fill that machine all the way to the top with clothes, it really won’t clean them as well as an agitator-based machine. What Bells and Whistles You Really Need. Remember: the more features an appliance has, the more likely it will need service. Trends. Stainless steel remains the most popular style, but otherwise the trend has moved from glossy, textured black or white to flat, matte black or white. People are customizing color and hardware on models that allow it. CONTINUED >

They also are putting custom wooden panels on appliances or ordering custom colors to match their décor. For example, Samsung offers the Bespoke line of refrigerators, which allows you to interchange the panels to a desired pattern or color. It even has an option that you can draw on with a dry erase marker. Maintenance Will Make Appliances Last Longer. Clean the filters on your dishwasher. If your dishwasher has a water softener option, use it to reduce the minerals that can do damage to internal components. Vacuum the coil on your refrigerator to allow proper ventilation. Clean your oven twice a year and keep the cooktop surface clean from debris and grease buildup, which is ultimately the demise of igniters on gas cooktop surfaces. DIRECTIONS Preheat grill to 375° F. In a food processor, add marinade ingredients and pulse to form a paste. Rub on chicken until well-coated. Grill for 12 minutes. Serve with rice or pita bread.

When Pravin and Anju Wilfred built their Hillsborough house, they selected the standard builder’s kitchen, knowing that they were going to design one of their dreams once they got settled in. Through the years, as they cooked and baked together, they concocted a mental list — a recipe if you will — that included the elements they wanted to incorporate into the new kitchen, which they envisioned as a gathering spot for themselves and their three daughters and as an entertainment center for friends and family.

The existing kitchen, which had brown cabinetry and a small window, was dull, dark and not large enough to accommodate all the functions the family desired. “My wife and I both do a lot of ethnic cooking with Indian spices and garnishes, and we like to experiment with baking and roasting,” Pravin says. Anju adds that they also wanted a place where everyone could sit down every day to share meals together. The couple — Pravin’s in health-care technology and Anju works for a health-care

insurance provider — commissioned Somerset-based Heart Kitchens to do the custom redesign, which encompassed the kitchen, the adjoining sunroom and the laundry room. Because the Wilfreds have a lot of small appliances — everything from mixers and kettles to can openers — the Heart Kitchens team designed five “garages” that allow these items to be discretely housed behind retractable pocket doors when not in use. “I spent more time in design, laying out the cabinets and garages than I’ve done on any other project,” says Steve Niedzielski, Heart Kitchens’ owner and lead designer. “The garages provide incredible storage.” To make the space lighter and brighter, the custom maple cabinets that reach to the ceiling were painted white, and the room’s small window was replaced by a picture window.

“It really opens the space,” Pravin says. “We don’t even use curtains or shades on it.” He notes that the lighting system is automated; individual lights can be dimmed or set on timers to turn off and on. The focal point of the kitchen is the large central island, which seats six. “We have every meal there,” Anju says. “We can sit and face each other, and we play family games there.” The island is notable for another reason: Its top, a double-thick slab of quartz, weighs 2,200 pounds. “It took eleven men to install,” Niedzielski says. “It took us three hours just to get it into the house.” The extra-large sink, complete with a wooden cutting board, does double duty as a workstation,

a necessity when the Wilfreds are trying out new recipes. (Their collection of spices numbers more than 100.) The sunroom, now outfitted with a beverage bar that has a wine cooler, a sink and a faucet that dispenses water from a basement-mounted reverse osmosis filter, functions as a lounge. “It’s where we have coffee and drinks,” Pravin says. The Wilfreds are so happy with their new kitchen that it’s where they spend most of their time – even when they’re not cooking or dining. “This kitchen takes my breath away every time I walk into it,” Anju says. “I love how form and function came together so exquisitely.” Explore designs for a new kitchen at heartkitchensnj.com.

Why the Right Floors Make a Difference in How Your House Feels

Your floors set the tone for your home. Consider: They welcome people inside, guide them to the kitchen, elevate the mood in the living room and create a cozy environment in the bedroom. Often the unsung heroes of residential décor, well-selected floors can enhance the environment of your living space. “Selecting the right floor for your lifestyle and the specific room is key,” says Steven Dipollina, owner of Floor Coverings International of Somerset, who operates a mobile showroom that allows him to bring over 3,000 flooring options directly to clients’ homes. Hardwood is the most popular product — but it’s not for every home. “People find hardwood beautiful and since it’s considered a permanent floor, it adds value. However, it is not as resilient to water and scuffs as other products,” he says. “If you want a wood look for an area where there might be moisture or high traffic, consider luxury vinyl or laminate products, which give the best of both worlds: They have a realistic wood look and are resilient, resist scuffs and, depending on the product you select, can be moisture- and water-resistant.” In addition, these products are more budget-friendly than hardwood and are easy to install over an existing floor. If you are looking to add value to your home with a permanent floor that is waterproof and durable, check out tile options. “You would not select tile in an area where children are going to be actively playing, but it is great in high

traffic areas like the entry way, kitchen and bathroom,” Dipollina says. “Since tile is hard and cold, you might consider radiant heat flooring.” Alternatively, you can opt for a warm, soft and cozy feel underfoot with carpet. “Carpet offers so many colors and styles,” he says. “People worry about carpets getting dirty, but that is not necessarily true. Many are stain-resistant and can be cleaned multiple times without ruining the product. Homeowners just need to be vigilant and maintain their carpets.” It depends on your preference, of course. Dipollina is seeing some clients replacing existing carpet with hard surfaces, even in bedrooms. “For example, they want to run the hardwood, vinyl or laminate from the hallway into the bedroom,” he says. “If you want to soften the look in the bedroom, you can add an area rug on top of the hard surface.” Once you have your floors installed, proper maintenance will keep them looking their best. Dipollina recommends using cleaners specific to hardwood to maintain their luster. Carpets should be regularly vacuumed and can be steam cleaned as needed to remove stains. Maintenance of laminates and vinyl depends on the product. “You can use wet mops or steam mops on some, and you can also sweep and use spray cleaners,” he says.
