LIFESTYLE LETTER

The Year is Yours. Now What Will You Do With It? For many of us, this time of year presents an opportunity to reset. I’ve personally never been a fan of New Year’s resolutions. We get all excited about a new idea and by the second week of January it’s fallen by the wayside. Instead, I like to challenge myself all year long as needed. One of my favorite sayings is “A goal without a plan is a dream.” Make sure you put action steps behind those goals! I approach goal setting from a mindset of not supplying quick fixes to check boxes in the short term but valuing what is sustainable over the long haul. In this issue, we wanted to provide inspiration for making lasting, realistic, longterm improvements to your physical, emotional and mental health. When it comes to anything in life — business, finance, food, home and personal health — it’s not what you do some days that moves the needle. It’s what you do MOST days. For better or worse! For instance, taking a vacation every week would be financially and practically unfeasible, but taking a trip a few times a year is good for the soul. In fact, later this month we are headed to Cabo San Lucas with a group of publisher friends to celebrate our success over the past year. While vacation is fun, it would certainly lose its luster if we never returned to the real world. Here’s another example: having a beautiful steak dinner with a few cocktails and crème brulée every night for dinner isn’t the best for your health, but doing so once in a while is perfectly fine! It’s not the "sometimes" choices you make, it’s the "most of the time" choices that shape you. So plan the vacation AND work to establish more regular rest in your work week. Join a fitness community or gym AND enjoy that dessert you’ve been wanting to try at Blue Sheep Bake Shop. It’s not what you do some days — it’s what you do most days that will lead to a more peaceful, filling and fabulous 2023. Here’s to you! We’re rooting for you.

Conquering the Sea BRIDGEWATER COMPETITIVE SWIMMER LEE EVANS DISCUSSES WHAT IT TOOK TO SWIM FROM ASIA TO EUROPE — WHILE DODGING JELLYFISH

20

AT H LE T E LIF E | FITNESS

Although Lee Evans has been a swimmer his entire life, he never dreamed that he would compete in one of the world’s most famous races. Evans, who just turned 50, swam the annual 4-mile Bosphorus Cross-Continental Swimming Race between Asia and Europe in 1:02:54 in August 2022, placing 14th in his age group and 179th among the 1,502 men entered. The Liverpool native has lived in Bridgewater since he moved to New Jersey 12 years ago for a job promotion. Evans, who leads the global regulatory team for the medical technology health care company Philips, his wife, Anita, and their three children — 13-year-old Rhia, 12-year-old Jayen and 7-year-old Lotti — all like to swim.

YOU GREW UP, SURROUNDED BY WATER, IN A MARITIME CITY. WHEN DID YOU LEARN TO SWIM?

I READ THAT IT WAS BECAUSE OF YOUR FATHER THAT YOU ENTERED THE BOSPHORUS RACE.

It was my father who started me. My earliest memory was from when I was 3. He put me in the water and told me to swim to him. He kept walking backwards, away from me, so I had to keep swimming. When I was 7, I got a place in swim clubs, and I began practicing before and after school and on weekends, too. For a short period of time, I was one of the best swimmers in the north of England.

He had mentioned the race a couple of times, and I kept telling him that I would enter it, but I never got around to it. After he died in April 2021, I decided to do it.

DID YOU ENVISION YOURSELF AS A PROFESSIONAL COMPETITIVE SWIMMER? No, because I was average height and size for my age, but as I got older, others grew taller and bigger than me, and I eventually stopped racing competitively to focus on my studies. In fact, I stopped swimming from my late teens until I was out of college, and since then, aside from competing in some triathlons, I’ve been swimming only for fun and exercise.

IT MUST HAVE TAKEN A LOT OF RIGOROUS TRAINING. I’d love to say that I was diligent, but I wasn’t. I swam 200 laps after work each night at Life Time in Bridgewater, and in the summer I got up early and swam 200 to 300 laps. When we went on vacation, I swam in the sea to keep myself in touch with the salt water.

WHAT WAS IT LIKE SWIMMING IN THE SEA? The Bosphorus is one of the busiest maritime passages in the world. They close it for two hours every year to hold the race. When I looked at the water, I thought that it would take me two hours, which would be a problem because you literally have to be out of the water in two hours so they can open the channel again. But then I read that there’s a current working in your favor that takes you approximately a mile an hour.

IT MUST HAVE BEEN A VERY EMOTIONAL AND EXCITING EXPERIENCE. We rode to the starting point on Istanbul’s Asian side on a ship, where we waited for about an hour-and-a-half for two other ships of swimmers to join us. I had a lot of time to study the water, and what I saw scared me: It was filled with jellyfish. And I thought, I don’t want to do this. I don’t want to get stung. And there was nobody to talk to because most of the other swimmers on my ship only spoke Turkish. But I finally found someone who said that they’d been doing this race for several years, and it had never been an issue.

WHAT WAS IT LIKE ACTUALLY BEING IN THE WATER WITH ALL THOSE OTHER SWIMMERS? It wasn’t difficult swimming — and dodging all those jellyfish took my mind off of things. I had read that there were a lot of swimmers through the years who had been disqualified, and I couldn’t figure out why until I saw the platform that marked the end of the race. It looks like a pool ladder, but you have to have stay in the middle to reach it. If you go too far out to the side, the current will carry you beyond it, and you can’t turn back because the same current will keep you going forward, which is where many disqualifications came from. It was a relief — and a little luck — that I reached it.

22

AT H LE T E LIF E | FITNESS

YOU USED THE RACE TO RAISE MONEY FOR RURAL COMMUNITIES DEVELOPMENT INTERNATIONAL. It’s a new nonprofit — I’m now on the board — and I’m excited to say that the $4,032 I raised is going to supply books, desks and chairs for a school that the group funded to be built in Ghana.

YOU MAKE COMPETITIVE SWIMMING SOUND EASY. DO YOU HAVE ANY TIPS FOR PEOPLE WHO WANT TO GET STARTED? It’s all about perfecting technique. Once you have the technique down, your energy output is less, and you can swim longer. The best advice I have is to take some lessons with a stroke coach.

SPEAKING OF LESSONS, WHAT DID YOU LEARN ABOUT YOURSELF DURING THE RACE? I used to consider 50 as old — that’s when you start looking for things to go wrong, and you start to slow down. I realized that is far from the truth and there are no limits. I don’t feel old, and the race gave me confidence that all goals are still attainable.

NOW THAT YOU’VE CONQUERED THE BOSPHORUS, WHAT OTHER COMPETITIONS ARE ON YOUR RADAR? I’m planning to do the race again next year. I also recently investigated the challenge of swimming the English Channel. There’s a threeyear waiting list for it, so I’m contemplating — not planning on — doing it, too.

New Year, Healthier New You! CONQUER YOUR NEW YEAR’S RESOLUTION TO GET HEALTHY WITH THESE EASY DAILY ROUTINES The most important thing you can do each day is to move. We all sit too much. The American Heart Association recommends people get 150 minutes of moderate exercise each week. “Moderate” exercise is when you can still hold a conversation. An easy way to get moderate exercise is with brisk walks. One of the simplest things I do is park far away from a store when I go shopping. That helps me reach my targeted 10,000 steps a day. You’d be amazed at how fast it adds up. Walking with a friend — or while talking on the phone with a friend — is a great way to socialize. I schedule walks on my calendar with friends instead of coffee or lunches. Pilates is another low-impact, moderate activity that works for all ages and abilities. I recommend taking three Pilates classes a week as part of your weekly movement. At Club Pilates, we

have a variety of classes that can help you reach your goals. Some classes focus specifically on strength training, which is important to keep bones strong as we age — especially for women. Many of our class types at the studio incorporate free weights into your routine, upping the weight and spring resistance as you grow stronger. Strength training at home can be as simple as holding a two-minute plank using your own body weight. I do this after I brush my teeth. Throughout the day, stay hydrated and eat lots of protein. My goal is to drink 64 ounces of water daily. My children will eat eggs or a protein shake before school. I do not believe any food is bad, but my children know they need to eat their five fruits and vegetables before reaching for a bag of chips, and we save dessert for the weekends. Sleep is important. I try my best to get at least eight hours a night and stick to a routine. I tell my kids my mom clock-out time is 8:45 p.m. At that time, I read or listen to the Calm meditation app and go to bed by 10 p.m. I also love naps. A 20-minute nap during that low-energy point after lunch will refresh you better than a cup of coffee. Karen Spidare is a co-owner of Club Pilates, Bridgewater, with her husband, Todd. COSMETIC SOLU TIONS NEW YEA R’S RESOLUTION S N E E D A L ITTL E HEL P? W HAT TO EXP E CT AT E D B ME D SPA

Dr. Edward D. Buch

EDB Med Spa, which recently opened in Hillsborough, offers a variety of cosmetic medical procedures ranging from blepharoplasty (the removal of excess skin from the eyelids) to liposuction in a resort-like setting. The medical spa is owned and operated by Dr. Edward D. Buch, the NJ Top Docs surgeon whose monogram is in its name. Dr. Buch, who specializes in laser hair removal, laser facial resurfacing, laser liposuction and platelet-rich plasma procedures, tells us all about the latest anti-aging techniques and technologies that will make us look and feel better about ourselves for years to come.

I’VE NEVER HAD A COSMETIC MEDICAL PROCEDURE BEFORE, SO I’M A LITTLE NERVOUS. WHAT CAN I EXPECT WHEN I COME TO YOUR OFFICE? This is an inviting space that’s meant to put you at ease. I conduct free consultations, where I give you an honest evaluation of how the procedure will work on you and tell you if another modality would be better.

DESPITE THE “SPA” NAME, THESE ARE MEDICAL PROCEDURES. We use the latest technologies so that the procedures are minimally invasive with minimal to no recovery time. I personally test all the devices on myself to see how they feel so I can be honest with my patients. While patients can expect minor discomfort with these procedures, they should not experience pain.

YOU MENTIONED MINIMAL RECOVERY TIME. HOW MINIMAL IS MINIMAL? It depends on the procedure. With liposuction, for instance, which takes about two to two-and-a-half-hours, you can return to work after one to three days. Many of the procedures require no recovery time and are performed in about a half hour with some requiring more than one treatment for optimal results.

HOW MUCH DO THE PROCEDURES COST? It depends on the procedure, of course, and because they are medically cosmetic, insurance doesn’t cover the cost. However, nothing we do requires anesthesia, which is a substantial saving in the overall cost of the service.

WHY DO YOU THINK MORE PEOPLE ARE OPTING FOR COSMETIC MEDICAL PROCEDURES? ARTICLE BY NANCY A. RUHLING PHOTOGRAPHY BY HELEN LAWLER, INSPIORMX

People want to look better and younger without any major setbacks or downtime. Many of the current modalities allow people to achieve this goal as they continue their active lives.

WHAT’S THE MOST POPULAR TREATMENT AT EDB MED SPA? Botox injections, because they are quick, and there’s no downtime involved.

YOU ALSO OFFER AESTHETIC FACIALS AND HORMONE REPLACEMENT. HOW DO THEY WORK? Our experienced esthetician performs medical-grade facials, peels, micro-needling and dermaplaning as well as acne treatments. Hormone replacement allows women to restore their youthfulness, manage hot flashes, ignite their sex drive and treat bone loss that typically occurs as they age. Men who have this procedure can maintain muscle mass and bone strength. This is performed by inserting hormone pellets under the skin with natural plant-based material. This procedure can last for several months as compared to daily hormone injections or pills that do not maintain consistent hormone levels.

WHAT ARE SOME OF THE NEWER PROCEDURES AND TREATMENTS THAT YOU OFFER? Technology has changed the way we perform some of our procedures. With liposuction, for instance, we often transfer fat from places where it is not wanted to other parts of the body, usually the breasts and the buttocks. There’s a new laser

device called BeautiFill that makes the fat more saturated so when it is transferred there is minimal tissue loss, which yields longer-lasting results. This procedure is conducted under local anesthetics, which avoids risks traditionally associated with general anesthesia. Additionally, the old CO2 laser has been replaced by the Opus Plasma device, which is used to treat sun damage, wrinkles and scars with minimal downtime as compared to the older technology. Patients can expect some redness in the treatment area for 24 to 48 hours, none of which should prevent the patient from resuming daily activities the next day.

CAN YOU EXPLAIN EDB MED SPA'S MOTTO? EDB Med Spa’s motto is “Growing old is obligatory but looking older is optional.” To look your best, I recommend that people do routine maintenance, which varies depending on your age. Every patient receives an individual treatment plan, including routine follow-up visits, because I want them to have a positive outcome and to be happy with their results. LEGGINGS 3 WAY S ARTICLE BY HALEY WILLIAMS

Our suggestions for styling faux leather leggings As we move through the season of spandex when most of us feel we’d rather not leave our stretchy pants, we wanted to feature three distinct looks using the same pair of Foil Snake Print Faux Leather leggings from Spanx. Whether you’re brunching with the babes or getting ready for date night, these versatile leggings can carry you through from casual to chic. While there are endless ways to wear them, we’re going to show you three ways to start styling them today.

BRUNCH A FTER BA R R E

Snag some of the key details of the outfits here!

34

T R E N D SE T T E R | SHOPPI NG

Who doesn’t love a good brunch with the girls after your workout complete with mimosas to celebrate? Our suggestion is to layer your tank with loose layers and a light jacket to swiftly transition you from the barre to breakfast. A hat is always a good option to have on hand in case you worked too hard and that hair is showing it. We opted for easy-to-slip-on sockless sneakers that breathe. Lastly, don’t forget a cute tote or bag. Consider throwing in a clean tank and any makeup or face wipes you may need for freshening up on your way.

Whether you want a bit of a boost, a hint of a lift, or just a little tuck, you won’t go wrong with this versatile shapewear. And with these styling tips, you’re ready to throw them on for any occasion!

MOTO MAMA What we love about Spanx is their inherent ability to elevate your look, regardless of the occasion. Stretchy pants in a faux leather snake design? Say no more. Pair them with edgy booties or colorful pumps for a more elegant aesthetic. Playing with different textures is a good way to add interest and intrigue. Consider a chunky sweater with some unexpected details like the bare shoulder shown here, a thick boucle or intricate detailing. We love a good leather jacket with hardware details draped over the shoulder(s) for chilly evenings as you traverse the town. Pair this look with a gorgeous sparkly clutch and chunky bracelet.

SAT U R DAY SPORTS CH IC Whether you’re headed to a child’s sports game or a bar to watch the big game with your friends, leggings offer the structure and flexibility you’ll want as you find your spot among the fans in the bleachers or indulge in some lovely libations. Layers are life for this look. We tied a button-down around the waist which is so nice through the colder winter months as both an outfit accessory and a layering piece. Fur-lined high tops provide practical footwear for this look — because who doesn’t love some killer sneaks? A shacket and crossover bag complete the look. JANUARY 2 0 2 3 | C I TYL I FE STYL E . The Golden Remedy HOMEMADE CHICKEN SOUP WARMS YOUR BODY, FEEDS YOUR SOUL AND PERHAPS CURES SOME ILLS

ingredients: • 1 lb boneless chicken breast, diced • 1 onion, diced • 3 carrots, diced • 3 celery stalks, diced • 1 clove garlic, minced • 1 tbsp extra virgin olive oil • 1/4 tsp salt • 1/8 tsp pepper • 48 oz chicken or vegetable broth • 2 c water • 1/2 lb small pasta • Fresh parsley, chopped (optional, for garnish) • Parmesan cheese, shaved (optional, for garnish and added flavor)

method:

When the temperatures dip, I’m all about soup season, aren’t you? My family loves my recipe for chicken soup the best. It’s my favorite go-to recipe for winter because it is easy to make, tastes amazing and can be tweaked by changing up some of the staple ingredients. Chicken soup has many health benefits because the broth soothes the body with lots of nutrients, hydration and warmth. Packed with vitamins and minerals, chicken broth nourishes people who are sick with common illnesses. Plus, homemade chicken soup is easy to digest. It packs a nutrition power-punch of vitamins, minerals, protein and fiber, and contains cysteine, an amino acid known for its healing properties. Homemade chicken soup is also great because you can control the ingredients. When I’m trying to shed a few pounds, I substitute beans for pasta to increase my protein intake. When I want to get in some extra iron, I’ll sauté fresh spinach with the other base ingredients. Sometimes, I’ll use tortellini instead of small pieces of pasta. You get the idea.

1. Dice all of the veggies and chicken. 2. Mince the garlic. 3. Heat extra virgin olive oil over medium-high heat 4. Add the veggies and cook down for about 8 minutes until they are soft. 5. Add the garlic, salt and pepper, mix well and cook for another 30–60 seconds until the garlic releases its odor. 6. Add the broth and water. Bring to boil. 7. Add uncooked chicken and cook for 10 minutes until the chicken is no longer pink. 8. Add pasta and cook according to directions. 9. Garnish with shaved parmesan and parsley if desired.
