This August marks the three-year anniversary of Bridgewater City Lifestyle. Where has the time gone? In fact, I completely forgot it was our anniversary issue until I sat down to write this letter and I took a peek at last year’s publisher letter. A lot has changed in three years. We survived a pandemic and have gone on to launch a second successful publication, Somerset Hills City Lifestyle, serving Basking Ridge, Bedminster, Bernardsville and Far Hills. What you may not realize is that we are actually franchise owners. When we first began publishing, there was only one other magazine in New Jersey. Now, there are seven of us! If you’re interested in learning more about the opportunity, shoot me a line. Speaking of changes, some of you may have noticed, back in January we changed the name of our publication! We are all about being on-brand and being part of City Lifestyle sets us apart from the various lifestyle magazines in existence. We’ve also had changes on the homefront, as we welcomed a fourth child into our home, but not in the traditional way. Our oldest daughter, who is 13, joined our family two years ago. We like to jokingly say that we adopted a babysitter. In addition to another child, we also added a pet to our family. Polly, the most well-behaved guinea pig on earth—hopefully I’m not jinxing myself here—has become a constant companion to our 11-year-old daughter. This issue is dedicated to all of your furry friends in Bridgewater. Our doggie cover model contest on social media was a huge hit and Rocco stole the show with the most votes. Somerset County Commissioners recently recognized staff members who worked diligently throughout COVID to help residents obtain Emergency Rental Assistance. Collectively, their efforts prevented the eviction of more than 2,000 residents in 877 households. Somerset County's ERAP team allocated approximately $9 million in rental support. Nothing says “lazy days of summer” like ice cream. Taking that first lick of ice cream can instantly transport us back to our childhood, whether it be an early memory of rescuing a dripping scoop from landing onto a hot pool deck or the sweet sensation felt when sharing a cone with a teenage love. We ate it after winning awards, dove into it after failing a test and savored it before bed on balmy summer nights on the front porch, watching the fireflies twinkle.

Although the flavors presented today can seem novel, there’s truly nothing new. “When you look at recipes of early chefs who worked for the nobility, you’ll see avocado, lavender, chocolate—which was exotic then—and pinecone. Fast-forward to 21st century artisanal ice cream shops, and they are making the same things,” says Laura Weiss, author of Ice Cream: A Global History. “Ice cream is a blank culinary palate: It’s cream, sugar and maybe eggs. pretty much any flavoring you want—savory, sweet it doesn’t matter.” But the main ingredient is love. When we asked our social media followers to name their favorite local ice cream parlors, two rose to the fore: Blue Sheep Bake Shop and Fresh Tiki Bar, both on Division Street in Somerville. Also noted was Gabriel’s Fountain in Bridgewater, As You Like It in Raritan and Summer Ville Homemade Ice Cream in Somerville. At Blue Sheep, Karin Giamella serves up artisan ice cream, which is made in-house. “The recipes are curated by our pastry chefs whose goal is to create unique, from-scratch recipes using only the highest quality, all-natural ingredients,” she says. “The Roasted Pistachio Cannoli ice cream is a great example of our strategy: We use actual cannoli cream ingredients to flavor the ice cream instead of using an extract or flavor, which is the industry norm.” At Fresh Tiki Bar, a few doors down from Blue Sheep, owners Matt Lewis and Aimee Suprenant invite guests to their corner of the tropics, including the outdoor dining area they have dubbed “The Fresh Tiki Beach Club.” Inspired by a family trip to Hawaii in her youth, Suprenant envisioned a restaurant with an island vibe and a community feel. Its fresh, made-to-order artisan ice cream with up to 30 rotating flavors has established a fervent following. On our Facebook post asking about our readers’ favorite area ice cream locations, Stephanie Avrutskiy commented, “Fresh Tiki Bar has the best ice cream we ever had—the strawberry shortcake sundae is heavenly” and Jerry Carollo called it “to die for.” Kaitlin Horvath gave a nod to its “amazing” Italian cookie ice cream, Kim Kredatus recommended the crumb cake and Amanda DeAlmeida gave a shout out to “Aimee’s butter pecan.” “New to the menu is our Fresh Baked Warm Sundaes: Your choice of ice cream sits atop your choice of fresh baked brownies, cookies or waffles, which are warmed and topped with fresh caramel sauce, dark chocolate sauce, our signature pink sprinkles and fresh whipped cream,” says Suprenant. Even More Epic, which opened this spring in Somerville, offers rolled ice cream. Never heard of this? Neither did we—so of course we had to stop in and try it! “We actually make homemade ice cream from scratch in front of you,” explains Kevin Trimarchi, who also owns Epic Cookies, also on Main Street. “We put the ice cream base liquid on a freezer plate while you watch, so you are getting the freshest ice cream possible.” Following is a roadmap for some of the area’s other beloved locations. This list is just a taste— pardon the pun—of what our county has to offer, so we encourage you to explore and make your own discoveries.

As You Like It, Raritan: This little corner ice cream store that has been operating for close to 40 years has a neighborhood feel—and often lines out the door. With 24 flavors of hard ice cream—get a blue tongue with Cookie Monster Chunk—vanilla and chocolate softserve and sugar-free, nonfat ice cream, you’ll be hardpressed to pick. But magazine follower Sophie Belkin says, “Its Jersey Shore is the best ice cream flavor ever.” Ava’s Homemade Ice Cream, Basking Ridge: Ava’s is truly a family affair: The parents develop the flavors and make the ice cream and the kids work at the shop. Our favorite: Goodness Gracious, which is named after Grace Eline, an area child who was diagnosed with a rare brain cancer. DIRECTIONS 1. Using an electric mixer, carefully and slowly on a low setting whip together heavy cream, cocoa powder, vanilla extract and Nutella until thick and creamy. 2. Using a spatula or spoon, fold in the crushed Oreos. 3. Place in a freezer-safe container for 6 to 8 hours.

DIRECTIONS 1. Combine sugar, ricotta and mascarpone until combined (approx. 1 minute).

Cover the mixture and chill for 1 hour. 3. Remove the cannoli ice cream mixture from the refrigerator and freeze it in your ice cream maker as per the manufacturer’s instructions. When you are about 5 minutes away from the ice cream being done, add cannoli shell pieces, pistachios and chocolate chunks. 4. Scoop ice cream into containers and freeze until solid (about 3 hours).

Rocco is a one-year-old American Field Lab, who lives in Basking Ridge with his loving family. His family describes him as a fun and obedient dog. Although this is the family’s first dog, he has been so wonderful with the kids that they say they might just want another! The family’s favorite memory with Rocco—or “Rock Man” as they call him—was when he first arrived from a long trip from S&S Kennels in South Dakota, where he was born. Mina’s vision was to bring activities to New Jersey that focused on technology, interaction, heightened user experience and safety. The Arc of Somerset County Celebrates 50 Years of Being a Champion for People With Intellectual and Developmental Disabilities

This year, the Arc of Somerset County celebrates its 50th anniversary of serving people with intellectual and developmental disabilities and the larger Somerset County community. From its humble beginning in 1972 with just 16 service recipients and two employees, The Arc has since grown to serving more than 1,400 people with intellectual and developmental disabilities and their families each year. The agency provides a lifetime of comprehensive services, advocacy and support to this population to promote growth, achievement and ongoing involvement in the community. The Arc movement and The Arc of Somerset County have seen many advancements locally and nationally in the past half-decade. In 1973, the federal government passed Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act, which prohibited discrimination against people with disabilities in federally funded public spaces and programs. In 1978, The National Council on Disability within the U.S. Department of Education was founded to promote policies and programs that increase opportunity and inclusion for individuals with disabilities. In 1986, it recommended enactment of an Americans with Disabilities Act and drafted the first version of the bill. Former Arc of New Jersey and Arc of Somerset County board member and parent advocate Fred Patterson was present at the signing of this landmark law in 1990.

In June, the agency celebrated its Golden Anniversary during its annual Arc Angel Gala. In addition to the people who it serves, among those in attendance were longtime supporters Jack Ciattarelli and Arc of New Jersey executive director Tom Baffuto, along with the agency’s staff, partners and volunteers past and present who have worked together to advance a mission 50 years in the making. “It has been an honor to serve this outstanding organization. With the support of the board and our leadership team, we have made significant progress in driving positive change for the individuals we serve in our communities,” says Lauren Frary, who served as executive director for the past 15 years. “Lauren’s work on behalf of our consumers, families, staff and boards has been a constant presence. During our 50th anniversary year, I am grateful and humbled to continue the conversation in service and advocacy that Lauren has led. The example she has set will remain our benchmark long into the future,” says Christopher Corvino, who became executive director in July. “We are excited to welcome Chris to his new position. He will play a key role in the future of The Arc and our services for children, adolescents and adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities,” says Michael Stefani, president of the board of directors.

“I’m a running nerd,” says Alexia Mitchko, a recent Bridgewater-Raritan graduate who will be studying nursing this fall at Messiah University in Mechanicsburg, Pa. “My dad was a runner, and I’ve been running most of my life.” Mitchko, who earned a varsity letter her freshman year, ran track as a freshman and started cross country as a sophomore, advancing to become captain. Desiree Mazzarese grew up in a house full of creativity. “My mom is very artistic. She gave us little projects, and we would often move furniture and decorative objects around the house to give it a fresh look. So, I always loved interior decorating,” she says. In 2021, she channeled that passion by opening Guest House, a home and gift boutique in Basking Ridge. “I wanted to own a place where people could shop a curated collection and find items with an eclectic flair,” she says. Soon, as she did with her mom growing up, Mazzarese and her sister, Stephanie Ossorio, started tinkering with a concept, adding unique children’s clothing and accessories as a pop-up store in the back of Guest House. The idea caught on, and they launched LULU Kids Style. “Stephanie and I both have four-year-old daughters. Her son is nine and mine is two. We had been toying around with the idea of opening a store since we saw a need for one in the area. Whether we’re looking for clothes for our kids or for fun, thoughtful gifts for a classmate’s birthday, we struggled to find options,” she says. LULU Kids Style—an online boutique, with a pop-up shop at Guest House—offers fashion-forward looks for toddlers to tweens. The name is a homage to their mom, who would sing “Skip to My Lou” to her children. “She still addresses my brother, sister and I as ‘Lu’ or ‘Lulu’ and it has extended to our kids. We wanted to include our mom somehow with the store and what better way than with something that brings us warm memories of our childhood,” Ossorio says. To keep their pulse on what kids want, the sisters poll family, friends and visitors to the store. “We have a large family and will send them pictures and ask their kids, ‘Would you wear this? Are your friends wearing this?’” The looks for the start of the school season are vibrant and uplifting. “My sister and I always dressed our kids in fun styles with bright colors and sequins and paired them with sneakers. Comfort is important when dressing kids, so why not make it fun and stylish,” Ossorio says. “That's what we’re seeing now: bright, rainbow colors and smiley faces like we saw growing up.” Comfort is key. “They like to wear what we adults wear—sweatshirts and jogger pants—but we tailor it to them,” Mazzarese says. For girls, the hot look is tank tops and shorts sets as well as denim jackets with sequins or patches—lots of patches. “But there is also a girly-girl trend with dresses that look like a tutu,” she notes.

For boys, all things casual-comfortable are flying off the site, along with fun button-down shirts with nautical or skull themes. Tweens love sweatshirts with inspirational and environmental sayings or images from ’70s and ’80s musicians like The Beatles and David Bowie. “A light lilac sweatshirt that says Be Kind in small print on the upper-left shoulder sold out within days of it being posted on the site,” Mazzarese says. “Tweens like crop tops, but parents do not want them to show too much of their middle, so we advise them to order one size larger—and everyone wins!”
