LIFESTYLE LETTER

The Stronger a Man Is, the More Gentle He Can Afford to Be This month it’s all about the men who make our community great. An inspirational man has the incredible power and privilege of shaping and mentoring the young people in their lives to grow and mature in a multitude of ways. Whether they are a father, a coach, an uncle or a boss, being a role model and leading by example can make a lasting impact on those watching. We can all probably think of a man in our life that has had a big impact on us at one time or another. On the cover this month is Akbar and Sheridan Cook of Martinsville, contestants on the 33rd season of reality TV’s “The Amazing Race.” Akbar, a principal at Newark’s West Side High School was a hero long before participating on the reality show. Turn to page 22 to find out why. In a house dominated by strong women—we have four daughters and even our guinea pig, Polly, is a girl—Jake takes his job as the “man of the house” quite seriously. Research shows that daughters who have secure and open relationships with their dads are significantly better placed to succeed both academically and vocationally, have high quality and stable romantic relationships, have positive psychological outcomes—lower rates of depression and higher self-esteem— and are empowered both to avoid negative peer pressure and refuse unwanted advances and emotional coercion in their relationships. For Jake, there’s no job more important than being a good dad to his little ladies. Looking to delight your guests at your Father’s Day BBQ? You’ll want to check out the air-fried wings and mango slaw recipe on page 52. And do you still need to get a gift for dear old dad? The Pro Shop at Raritan Valley Country Club has great options for both the golfers and non-golfers in your life. Page 31 lists their best sellers. On another note, both of our publishers celebrate their birthdays in June, just five days apart. Tiffany is celebrating a milestone birthday. Can you guess which one? Reminder, it’s always best to underestimate rather than overestimate a woman’s age! Happy Father’s Day, Bridgewater! Enjoy the kick-off to summer and the warm weather that comes with it. Amazing Grace AKBAR AND SHERIDAN COOK SHOWED GRIT ON “THE AMAZING RACE”—BUT ARE REAL STARS TO HUNDREDS OF INNER CITY YOUTH ARTICLE BY NANCY A. RUHLING PHOTOGRAPHY BY CBS ENTERTAINMENT

Power couple Akbar and Sheridan Cook became international celebrities when they were contestants on the 33rd season of reality TV’s “The Amazing Race.” But they already were local heroes. Akbar, the innovative principal of Newark’s West Side High School whose fans include Ellen DeGeneres and Oprah, and Sheridan, a Newark public school teacher, live in the Martinsville neighborhood of Bridgewater with their three children. Akbar, author of the 2022 best-selling book Focus on the Love: A Transformative Approach to Organizational Leadership, has set up Friendsof WestSide.org to involve the community in his activities. Akbar and Sheridan may have lost the 2022 race, but they definitely have won our hearts. Akbar talks to Bridgewater City Lifestyle about what drives him as an educator and how he uses the media to help further his cause of helping children in underserved communities.

Q: YOU HAVE GOTTEN A LOT OF PUBLICITY FOR YOUR WORK. SOME ARTICLES HAVE EVEN GONE SO FAR AS TO CALL YOU A ROCK STAR. A: Prior to “The Amazing Race,” I was the rock star of the family, but after “The Amazing Race,” Sheridan became the rock star. She’s afraid of heights, and when everyone got to witness how scared she was scaling the mountain and bungee jumping, she became Wonder Woman.

Q: YOUR PROGRAMS AT WEST SIDE HIGH SCHOOL ARE CONSIDERED GROUND-BREAKING. HOW DID YOU COME UP WITH THE IDEA OF LIGHTS ON!, WHICH KEEPS THE SCHOOL OPEN AFTER HOURS AND DURING THE SUMMER SO STUDENTS CAN USE IT AS A COMMUNITY AND RECREATION CENTER? A: The school year of 2014–15 opened with the death of a young lady, and another boy was then killed. With those two deaths in my first year, it was like “Scary Movie 2”: It seemed everything bad that was happening was happening in the West Ward. I felt helpless. Then, another baby—the toughest kid I ever knew—was killed two weeks before graduation. I grew up going to a Boys Club, and I decided to open the school up that summer. The first day, I had 40 people, and that grew to 150. I don’t know what role Lights On! played, but there were no acts of violence in the West Ward that summer. Now, we also do the program on Fridays throughout the year.

Q: WHAT EFFECT HAS THE PROGRAM HAD ON THE LIVES OF THE STUDENTS AND THE COMMUNITY AT LARGE? CAN YOU GIVE SPECIFIC EXAMPLES OF KIDS WHOSE LIVES HAVE BEEN TURNED AROUND? A: There are several. Alfonzo Anderson, who was gang-related and a great basketball player, is the first one of my babies to come to mind. I love this kid; I had him for three years. When he graduated, I called

a friend and got him on a junior varsity team at a junior college in Cheyenne, Wyoming. When I found out he was getting homesick and thinking of quitting, I hopped on a plane and drove to the campus. He graduated with an associate’s degree in his third year; the school loved him so much it gave him a second scholarship. Now he’s in a historically black college in Oklahoma City, and I’ve got a job waiting for him when he graduates.

Q: MORE RECENTLY, YOU MADE HEADLINES WHEN YOU INSTALLED A WASHER AND DRYER ON CAMPUS AND STARTED STOCKING ESSENTIALS SUCH AS DETERGENT AND TOOTHPASTE FOR STUDENTS. WHAT PROMPTED THIS, AND WHAT FEEDBACK HAVE YOU RECEIVED FROM STUDENTS? A: I found out kids were staying home because their uniforms were dirty. Not only didn’t they have washing machines, they also didn’t even have a bar of soap to clean them by hand. The feedback is in the stats: Our average daily attendance rate is now 90 percent. And I get calls from companies around the world that want to donate detergent to us.

Q: YOU SET UP THE ELLEN DEGENERES URBAN FARM AFTER YOU GOT $110,000 AFTER APPEARING ON HER SHOW THREE TIMES. HOW DID YOU COME UP WITH THE IDEA, AND HOW EXACTLY DOES IT INVOLVE AND HELP STUDENTS? A: It really wasn’t planned. I got 1,500 boxes of fresh produce from Jersey Cares, and I put the word out on social media, and 700 people from all over the state showed up. Now, working with partners, we offer not only produce and dry goods but also hot meals. The babies at the school can access the food any time, and there are specific hours for the public. We’ve set up about two dozen vegetable plots for the babies to take care of, and we’re building a greenhouse.

Q: IN ADDITION TO YOUR PRINCIPAL DUTIES, AKBAR, YOU ALSO COACH THE BASKETBALL TEAM. HOW DOES THAT CHANGE YOUR RELATIONSHIP WITH THE STUDENTS? A: Basketball has always been a part of my life—I met Sheridan on the court when we were students

at Florida Atlantic. And I take this role seriously: I’m the guy who drives the players home three by three in my car so they don’t have to wait at the bus stop late at night after a game. The basketball kids made me cool to the rest of the students.

Q. WHEN YOU AND SHERIDAN PLAY HOOPS, WHO WINS? A: Sheri is a baller—she often outscores people we play against. She’s the athlete of the family, but she can’t beat me, and I’ll never let her beat me.

Q: THIS BRINGS US TO YOUR MOST PUBLIC ATHLETIC EVENT: “THE AMAZING RACE.” WHY DID THE TWO OF YOU DECIDE TO ENTER THIS GRUELING COMPETITION? A: They approached me, and at first, I wanted to take Sheri’s brother, then my son, but they wanted her. We didn’t have to audition because this was supposed to be a season with inspirational people competing. The $1 million prize, of course, was in the back of my mind, but we had never been out of the country. So this was more about showing our babies the world.

Q: YOU ARE VERY BUSY PEOPLE AND PARENTS. HOW DO YOU CARVE OUT TIME TO SPEND TOGETHER AND WHAT DO YOU DO TOGETHER? A: All of the things I do for the community are family affairs that involve Sheri, my mother, my sister and my sons, and yes, it’s a real juggling act, but we do a lot of other things together—we really like to watch movies and play video games.

Q: YOU’VE BEEN ON “ELLEN,” OPRAH HAS VISITED YOU AT THE SCHOOL, YOU’VE BEEN ON “THE AMAZING RACE.” HOW HAS THAT CHANGED YOUR LIFE? A: My city knows me. I’m a son of the city, and the city officials support me. Even the governor has called me a couple of times. What’s’ amazing is that whether I’m in London, England or Springfield, Missouri, people recognize me, and I feel the love. My celebrity has brought me resources I didn’t have before. And that’s what this is all about: I want to take care of my community not just my babies in the high school.

Get Out on the Green! IMPROVE YOUR GOLF GAME WITH PRO TIPS FROM DAMIAN HAMLETT, GOLF PRO AT RARITAN VALLEY COUNTRY CLUB

ARTICLE BY PATTI ZIELINSKI PHOTOGRAPHY BY DONNA GIOIA

This year, Raritan Valley Country Club in Bridgewater is upping its golf game. In February, Damien Hamlett joined its management team as Head Golf Professional. And the country club, which partners with Troon, the leader in premier luxury golf course management, recently approved its Master Plan. This phased project includes improvements to the pool area and clubhouse, upgraded locker rooms, golf course enhancements, housed hitting bays on the driving range and a renovated racquets pavilion with the addition of paddle, a fitness center and golf simulators. Hamlett has been on the links since he was six, when he began playing with his dad and brother. His love for the game led him to his career as a PGA Professional. He is active in the New Jersey Section of the PGA of America and competes regularly in numerous annual tournaments and pro-ams.

“Over the past few years, I’ve put more emphasis on having fun. I will hit some good shots, I will hit some bad shots, but I don’t worry as much about my score as that plays into that mental aspect and can get in the way of focusing on technique. Stuff will happen. Just laugh it off and move on to the next shot.” — Damien Hamlet t

Although Hamlett is a professional, he still feels the same highs and lows that come with the game as recreational golfers. “Golf is a very mental game; it is really played within the six inches between your ears,” he says. “We get frustrated. We have to find a way to relax on the golf course and not let one bad shot wreck the rest of our game.” Hamlett says one of the biggest benefits of golf is that it gets you outdoors and your body moving. “It’s pure exercise. If you walk and play 18 holes, depending on the course, you could be walking 6.5 to 7 miles on average,” he says. “When you swing the club, you use muscles you don’t normally use.” Hamlett advises beginning golfers take time to learn how to play the game well. “The only way that you can learn the game is to get out on the golf course. You're not going to get a full understanding of the game if you’re playing from the tee box. Play from the middle of the fairway, where you’re going to get the ball on the green so you learn the game properly,” he says. While golf is often thought of as primarily a sport for men, Hamlett encourages wives, girlfriends and daughters to join the men they love on the links. One of his initiatives is promoting golf to women, which includes creating an advanced teaching program, from clinics to private lessons, with a social aspect. One example is Drinks on the Links, during which women can sip a specialty cocktail while learning. “If businesswomen get invited to go on a golf outing, never say no, even if you are a beginner,” he advises. “Because once you say no, you will be moved down the asking list.”

30

AT H LE T E LIF E | HEALTH + W E LLNE S S

Golf, Hamlett says, can be a family affair. To get children out on the links, the country club offers a children’s clinic on Saturdays, junior golf academy in the summer and a PGA Junior League golf team, which Hamlett explains is like a baseball Little League. “It's a fun team and a social environment to help kids learn the game,” he says. The biggest mistake he sees golfers make is trying to see how far they can hit the ball. “I’ve done this myself. After all, the object is to get the ball in the hole in the fewest number of strokes as possible,” he admits. “So, golfers will hit 500 yards in two shots and then it will take them six shots to get the ball in the hole from 20 yards. That's what frustrates golfers: They will hit the ball very well, but then they can’t figure out why they are not scoring well. They may be taking 50 percent of their shots from inside 50 yards. They should practice the short game: hitting inside 50 yards from the hole.” This is where the mental aspect comes in. “I feel like golf pros should be psychologists since it’s such a mental game. In fact, the best players are the best mentally,” Hamlett says. “Over the past few years, I’ve put more emphasis on having fun. I will hit some good shots, I will hit some bad shots, but I don’t worry as much about my score as that plays into that mental aspect and can get in the way of focusing on technique. Stuff will happen. Just laugh it off and move on to the next shot.” Find out more about Raritan Valley Country Club at rvcc1911.org.

In the Spirit BELLEMARA DISTILLERY SERVES UP TRADITION WITH A TWIST ARTICLE BY LAUREN JOHNSON PHOTOGRAPHY BY DONNA GIOIA VOLPE PHOTOGRAPHY

A well-crafted cocktail speaks for itself, and for Camden Winkelstein of Bellemara Distillery in Hillsborough, the backbone of any good drink starts with the main ingredient: the spirit. “I’ve always been into home brewing,” says Winkelstein. “After serving several years in the Navy, I wanted to open a brewery.” He moved to Scotland after finding a master program in brewing and distilling at Heriot-Watt University in Edinburgh. “At the time, I believe it was the only English-speaking master degree you could get in brewing and distilling,” he says. “I loved it. It was like all the stages of brewing beer, but there was more technology and equipment with distilling, which piqued my interest.” Winkelstein, who co-owns the distillery with his wife, Christina Lee, who manages their social media and marketing, opened Bellemara Distillery in December 2021. The name “Bellemara” is a word they created that translates to “beauty of the sea” in French and Scottish Gaelic. They currently have two spirit offerings, with more on the way. “We have a Single Malt Spirit, which is a double-distilled, clear spirit that gets a carbon filter similar to vodka, so it comes out tasting clean but still has a lot of that malt flavor. We also have a Single Malt Gin,

which is a clear spirit distilled a third time with juniper, coriander, orange peel and other botanicals,” says Winkelstein, who adds they’re also working on their first batch of American Single Malt Whisky, which will be ready in two years. Winkelstein explains that their goal is to showcase what craft distilling can be from a production standpoint as well as how people can enjoy craft spirits in cocktails. The beautiful, gleaming copper stills— constructed to be reminiscent of the stills in Scotland—can be seen from the lounge and tasting bar where guests can relax and enjoy seated service. “We’re one of only a few distilleries in New Jersey that produce all of their own ethanol in house, so every drop you drink here is made in the stills you’re looking at,” he says. Bellemara offers cocktail classes and in the not-so-distant future, Winkelstein hopes to share his love of distilling with the public through a distillers’ hour during which he will discuss the distilling process and give tours and tastings. “It’s so wonderful to finally have Bellemara come to life,” he says. “Seeing people enjoy what we’re doing is really amazing, and we couldn’t be more grateful.” Discover Bellemara’s offerings at bellemaradistillery.com.

Diamonds Are a Girl’s Best Friend Kayla Holguin, Bridgewater-Raritan High School Class of 2022 and Varsity Softball Player, Prepares for Her Next Inning ARTICLE BY PATTI ZIELINSKI | PHOTOGRAPHY BY HELEN LAWLER, INSPIORMX

KAYLA, WHAT DO YOU LOVE ABOUT SOFTBALL? I have been interested in softball since I was 5. My father is a state trooper, and I went to their annual softball tournaments. I played club softball growing up and made the varsity team at Bridgewater-Raritan in my freshman year. Since 2018, I’ve also played in the summer, fall and winter with the NJ Inferno, which plays showcase tournaments along the East Coast.

40

I NSP IR E D BY | ED U CATION

I am a utility player, which means I play every position, but primarily I play third base and outfield. The sport gets very exciting, but it can also be relaxing. You can just be in the moment with your teammates who become your close friends. I started training at Zoned Sports Academy in my freshman year with my school team, and I started individual lessons in my junior year to improve my skills. It really boosted my confidence and kept me motivated.

WHAT ARE YOUR BIGGEST ACCOMPLISHMENTS? Last year I made the Skyland Conference’s All-Conference Second Team for Bridgewater-Raritan. Since the conference is very competitive, this honor is a big deal. I also was accepted into the National Honor Society last year.

WILL YOU PLAY SOFTBALL IN COLLEGE? Yes! I was recruited by Susquehanna University in Pennsylvania to play on their team. I’ll be studying neuroscience.

WHO INSPIRED YOU GROWING UP? My parents were my biggest inspiration. My mom pushed me to succeed but reminded me to always stay humble. She told me that if I did not make varsity, I would just have to work harder to get that spot.

WHAT WILL YOU MISS WHEN YOU LEAVE FOR COLLEGE? I'm going to miss our football games. I vividly remember our playoff game this past fall. We had a full student section and almost every senior showed up.

“My advice for students is: Savor every day. High school is the fastest four years of your life. Freshman year feels like yesterday—and before I knew it, I’m graduating. ”

WHAT DO YOU LOVE ABOUT BRIDGEWATER-RARITAN HIGH SCHOOL? I love the community, which is so big I still meet new people. Even as a senior, I can walk the hallways and meet someone I have never seen before. My favorite memory was when I made the varsity team as a freshman and got to meet the older girls. I thought, “That will be me one day.” They became role models.

There’s nothing like a good batch of wings, but this version of the classic guys’ night food is as unexpected as it is delicious. Lightened up and crispier thanks to a bake in the air-fryer and sweetened with an easy homemade hoisin sauce, these have just the right amount of tang and umami. Pair the wings with a creamy mango slaw. Recipe developer Marisa Brahney is a New Jersey–based TV host and on-air lifestyle expert regularly seen on QVC, NBC, ABC, CBS and more.
