Home. It is meant to be a place of retreat, rest, love and a shelter from the outside world—a place where you can let your guard down and just be. Home really is where the heart is. We enjoy spending time with other people, so for us, our home feels most like home when we are entertaining. March is our Home and Design issue. Creating a home that you want to spend all of your time in isn’t easy. The memories that are made within the walls of our home are what lasts regardless if our home has the latest trends or if it hasn’t been updated in years. While it is fun to look at beautiful homes and dream about renovations, we all know that the love we share in our homes is truly what matters most. But for those of you who are ready for an update, in this month’s issue, we talk to local professionals and provide tips on how to update both the inside and outside of your homes. Some homes feel tranquil, and other homes—like ours—feel chaotic and look like a bomb went off in them. Such is life when you are a family of six. If your house is like ours and could use a little help in the organization department, then turn to page 26. Lauren Salaterski of Tucked & Tidy gives us tips on how to “Marie Kondo” our houses. March comes in like a lion and goes out like a lamb. As the month (hopefully) begins to warm up, it will be time to start grilling again. If the pandemic has brought about anything, it’s certainly an increased appreciation for the great outdoors and a love of fresh air. On page 42 Evan B. Pomeranz of Empire BBQ Cleaning gives us advice on how to properly clean our grills so that they are ready for grilling season. Confession: We can’t even remember the last time we thoroughly cleaned our own grill. He then shares his favorite baby back rib recipe so you can put those clean grills back to work. Bridgewater, from our home to yours, we wish you love, peace and happiness this March.

HEARTBEAT OF THE HOME A BRIDGEWATER FAMILY GETS A FLEXIBLE KITCHEN MAKEOVER WITH ROOM FOR GROWTH For over three decades, Larry Hopkins, owner of Five Star Home Remodeling in Bridgewater, has been helping families redefine their spaces to suit their changing needs. He was recently approached by a neighbor to reimagine their kitchen with a more open floorplan and bathed in natural light. “They had three adult children, two of whom were still at home, and a large, extended family they often entertained,” Hopkins says. “This couple, like many residents today, were looking for an open
20

concept and a kitchen anchored by an island around which people could gather.” To open the space, Hopkins removed a wall and expanded the window above the sink to provide a sweeping view of the backyard, which includes 150 acres of preserved land and an in-ground pool. He also expanded an existing walkthrough from the dining room into the living room to create more openness and to allow for a barn door, if the homeowner later desired some separation.

“The biggest challenge is you don’t know what you will find after a demolition—and that is where experience comes in,” Hopkins says. He cut open the walls before ordering cabinets—a practice he recommends to all homeowners. “If you order cabinets and then find that you can’t move what is behind the wall, you’re stuck with a custom cabinet that will not fit.” Hopkins recommended the family consider a larger island for entertaining. To see if the size worked, he moved a table into the space where the island would be so they could live with the configuration for a few weeks. While the kitchen was gutted, Hopkins had it wired for technology—Bluetooth speakers, outlets with USB ports, outlets for a TV and a cable line—even if the
family would not be using them immediately. “That gives them the flexibility to upgrade without having to pull the kitchen apart,” he says. When looking for a contractor, Hopkins recommends homeowners ask how they will manage the workflow. “You need to know if they have a plan or will be just winging it,” he says. By using his own contractors, Hopkins is able to provide detailed project management, from demolition and inspections to plumbing, electric, flooring and Sheetrock installation. “I do not start a job until everything is physically at the job site and inspected for damage,” he says. “This keeps the schedule on track.” Learn more about remodeling options at fivestarhomeremodeling.com.
Consider adding a wine cooler for added convenience
EXPERT ADVICE TIP 1
An open concept is the No. 1 kitchen trend.
TIP 2
Greige—a mix of gray and beige—is popular in kitchens. Here, a light gray with a hint of brown pulls highlights from the floor.
TIP 3
A larger island allows for more flexibility. The ideal length is at least 36 inches.
TIP 4
Paneling can give contrast and depth and lends a classic look to cabinets.
TIP 5
While you’re renovating, consider adding a wine cooler for added convenience.
TIP 6
Wiring WiFi Bluetooth speakers into the ceiling gives homeowners control over sound. CONTINUED >

RECLAIM YOUR SPACE WITH LAUREN SALATERSKI OF TUCKED & TIDY ARTICLE BY PATTI ZIELINSKI | PHOTOGRAPHY BY DONNA GIOIA VOLPE PHOTOGRAPHY
When Lauren Salaterski first read The Life Changing Magic of Tidying Up by Japanese organizing consultant Marie Kondo, she discovered clarity in not only her approach to her home—but also in her approach to her life. She devoured all of Kondo’s books, became trained in Kondo’s KonMari Method and started implementing her instruction. “It changed my life,” she says.
Then, Salaterski, who has a background in teaching, decided to share her knowledge. “Marie Kondo has had almost a 100 percent success rate when working one-on-one with clients,” she says. “I wanted to help other people as her method helped me.” She launched Tucked & Tidy, a Somerset-based luxury green cleaning and home organizing service committed to health and wellness. Salaterski breaks down some basic rules to get you started.
KEEP ONLY WHAT YOU LOVE People tend to start organizing by buying storage boxes, but really, the first step is to declutter and discard. Lay everything on the floor and select what you treasure the most rather than focusing on what you want to discard. Marie Kondo recommends you hold each item in your hand as you decide. This process allows you to create a space where you are surrounded only by the things that you love.
TIDY BY CATEGORY, NOT LOCATION
Commit Yourself to Tidying Up Set aside the time and space you need to tidy your home, your relationships, your mindset—and then make a commitment to complete it.
In the KonMari Method, the idea is to keep all items in the same category in the same place. Doing this is easier mentally than trying to remember where you stored something by frequency of use. For example, you should store shoes, coats and keys with like items rather than right by the door. Create a designated spot for every category, even the tiniest things that end up on countertops. This will change your mindset and make you naturally inclined to not bring home things you don’t need.
Imagine Your Ideal Life Decluttering
MA XIMIZE YOUR SPACE BY USING VERTICAL STORAGE File, don’t pile. Folding your clothes vertically and storing them as if they were papers in a filing cabinet will save space and allow you to see all your clothing at a glance. You won’t have to dig, which also saves you time. Similarly, in the kitchen, put your cereal in clear containers that allow you to see the contents. As the cereal gets low, put it in a smaller container to maximize space.
USE THE SLOPING EFFECT IN CLOSETS

Ask: Does the Item Spark Joy? If you are having trouble parting with an item, ask if it sparks joy in your life. This is an excellent lit-

Todd Lambrix and Terri McNamara in their home recording studio
Home Is Where the Art Is TODD LAMBRIX AND TERRI MCNAMARA TEACH, INSPIRE AND BUILD A COMMUNITY OF ART ON THEIR WEEKLY SHOW “THE LARGE GLASS”
ARTICLE BY PATTI ZIELINSKI
Every Tuesday night, Todd Lambrix and fiancé Terri McNamara grab some glasses of wine and head into their basement recording studio in their Hunterdon County home to talk about their favorite subjects: art and the talents who create it. The couple, who delighted in going to bars and sipping wine while speaking to likeminded people about art, decided in September 2020 to share their knowledge to a wider audience through “The Large Glass,” an online talk show that introduces a new artist or art-related theme and in the process, demystifies the artworld to those new to it. Art is the couple’s language of love—and one that they freely teach others to use. Lambrix studied painting as an undergraduate, earned a master’s degree in sculpture from the Rhode Island School of Design and has taught art on the college level for two decades.

“It’s really exciting when you start collecting pieces by artists like these, making them a part of your home and then seeing that artist’s career—and your collection—take off.”
McNamara is a nurse, artist, musician and writer. Together, with their blended family of three children, ages 6, 12 and 14, they live surrounded by art that they create and collect and want to share their worldview that anyone can create, collect and understand art. “As a teacher, I have an ability to explain things well,” Lambrix says. “So, when people say they don’t understand art—making it, looking at it or talking about it—I feel like it’s my job to say, ‘Wait a minute. Why are you afraid to talk about something that is at the center of our lives? We live in such a visual culture with our phones, but when it comes to talking about something that is not a meme or last night’s TV show, we stumble. So, I talk about art in a way that is accessible. I ask: What is your immediate reaction to the art? Sure, it might be a bit funny or naïve at first, but it’s all right because you’re getting in touch with that visual information. You’re starting to ride that bike. “The world of art has been kept at an arm’s length, and I think the industry intentionally does that to hold the

mystique,” he continues. “We’ve seem to have lost a bit of the connection as to what it means to create.” A person does not need to have formal training or gallery representation to be an artist, they assert. McNamara, who does not have Lambrix’s academic training, devotes time each week to her mixed-media pieces, which incorporate textiles, threads, objects and vintage items. “My art is about the ideas and themes of domesticity versus expected roles, and how women are portrayed in society in regard to their expectations versus their individuality. It’s playful with a lot of double entendre,” she says. Unlike his past, large-scale work, Lambrix’s current pieces are two-dimensional—drawing, painting and collage— and small enough to fit in his home studio. “I focus on the ways in which things that may not go together actually do go together,” he says. In addition to highlighting up-and-coming talents, the show also delves into art history and puts contemporary artists into the context of the masters. The name

is an homage to “The Large Glass,” by Marcel Duchamp, who pioneered conceptual art in the 20th century. Very few people know that Duchamp met his wife, Alexina— “Teeny”—who was formerly married to Pierre Matisse, son of French master Henri Matisse, at her farmhouse in Tewksbury. Such stories are indicative of the gems the couple imparts to listeners. “Duchamp is one of my favorite artists,” Lambrix says. “I think about him when I do my work now.” People don’t realize the value of art from a collection, investment or emotional standpoint or simply for adding expression to the home, Lambrix notes. “When you go to a retail store and buy a poster, you’ve essentially cut off an opportunity to own something genuinely unique, whether that piece costs $5 or $5,000. Why buy something mass-produced when you can surround yourself with art that speaks to you?” he says. “Teaching kids about art is critical. It kills me to hear how art is being truncated in schools.” “The Large Glass” presents an opportunity for an accessible art education, which can be used immediately. The show presents artists, some who are New York–based, that people can get in on the ground level of collecting. “There are a number of Central New Jersey artists we are watching right now. At the top of our list is Christina McKinnon, Terri Fraser, Laura Trisiano, Val Sivilli and Yael Eisner,” says Lambrix. “It’s really exciting when you start collecting pieces by artists like these, making them a part of your home and then seeing that artist’s career—and your collection—take off.” Tune into “The Large Glass” on Tuesday nights at 8 p.m. at thelargeglass.org.

ALEX DE SOUSA SHOWS YOU HOW TO CREATE A NEW HOME FACADE THAT COMMANDS DOUBLE TAKES ARTICLE BY NANCY A. RUHLING PHOTOGRAPHY BY SAMANTHA ANDERSON PHOTOGRAPHY
There is an art to climbing up on the roof. And it starts before you take the first step. “You need a good, sturdy ladder—and a lack of fear,” says Alex De Sousa, owner/founder of Union County– based De Sousa Contracting. “Going up is not a problem. But coming down, going backwards, you have to practice that to get used to it.” He makes it sound simple, but that’s probably because heights have never bothered him. De Sousa, born in Newark, raised in Hillside and now living in Union County, learned about climbing ladders and home renovations while helping his father with small projects when he was growing up. “I’m self-taught,” he says proudly, adding that in 2021 alone he and his curated team of subcontractors, who each have 20 years of experience laying shingles, have replaced 50 roofs. In 2018, unsatisfied with the work of contractors he had hired, he started his own company, which specializes in roofing, siding and exterior paving. One of his first projects was his own house, a 1968 bi-level that he bought in foreclosure after it had been vacant for four years. He gutted it, and of course, replaced its roof and siding, showing it off to potential clients as a sample of the caliber of work De Sousa Contracting completes. A good roof—one that’s made of high-quality materials and that is installed properly—can cost $8,000 to $16,000 depending on the style and size of the home and should last 25 to 30 years. “Ranch houses, which are predominant in towns like Bridgewater, have bigger roof surfaces so they are more expensive,” he says. Technology has lessened De Sousa’s time on the ladder considerably. To come up with cost estimates for clients, CONTINUED >

TIP 1
If your shingles are sprouting moss, delaminating or are loose or missing, it probably means that your roof needs replacing.
TIP 2
Clean your gutters at least once a year, preferably in the autumn right after the leaves have fallen, to prevent clogging and to allow snow and rain to drain properly.
TIP 3
High-quality gutter guards are a good investment for homeowners who don’t want the worry of climbing and annual cleaning.
TIP 4
As part of routine roof maintenance, check the attic, dormers, chimney and chimney exhaust pipes for signs of leaks.

he uses a comprehensive system based on aerial imagery that allows him to precisely plot points and calculate the pitches and angles of the roof. “It’s 100 percent accurate, and it means I can do it from my own home office,” he says. Replacing the siding is another way to add aesthetic and dollar value to your home. De Sousa recommends either vinyl siding or fiber cement siding, such as the popular brand James Hardie. “Whatever you choose should be good quality and sun-fade resistant,” he says. If you take good care of your roof, you probably won’t have to climb up on a ladder very often. For De Sousa, downtime means hanging out with his wife and two sons, who are 5 and 2. “The boys are into karate and swimming,” he says. “My oldest has come to some job sites with me to see what daddy does. But they’re too young. They’re not ready to join me on the roof. Yet.” Find out more about De Sousa’s work at 973-951-7748 and see before and after photos at instagram.com/desousa.contracting.

Now We’re Cookin’! ARTICLE BY NANCY A. RUHLING
PHOTOGRAPHY BY DONNA GIOIA VOLPE PHOTOGRAPHY
HAVE THE BEST BBQ SEASON EVER! EVAN B. POMERANZ OF EMPIRE BBQ CLEANING SHOWS YOU HOW.
What’s the real secret to great grilling? Evan B. Pomeranz answers the query with another question: When was the last time you cleaned your grill? Pomeranz, longtime grilling enthusiast and owner of Empire BBQ Cleaning, doesn’t wait to hear the answer. He knows that most people don’t ever do it; that’s why he makes it his business to do all the dirty work. “Taking care of your grill will not only prolong its life, but it will also reduce grease fires and the growth of bacteria and help your food taste best,” he says. “Think of it this way: You would never cook a new meal in a dirty pan with bits and pieces of old food cooked in it.” Empire BBQ Cleaning, which he established in East Brunswick in the summer of 2021, is as rare as a perfectly grilled steak: It’s one of only a handful of such companies in the state. Pomeranz is a grilling enthusiast and owns three of his own: a three-burner gas grill, an 18-inch kettle-style charcoal grill and a 36-inch wood-fire smoker pit-style barbeque. What’s surprising to most people is he actually gets just as much enjoyment from cleaning grills as he does from cooking his signature spare ribs on them. “I call my backyard my barbeque sanctuary,” he says. His passion for the pits began some two decades ago, when he was in his early 20s. “It was fun to hang out and tailgate and barbeque with my friends,” he says. “I’m partial to charcoal grills. I like the fire and the flavor.” Before he knew it, he was competing in baby back rib competitions and inviting 50 to 75 people to his house for backyard barbeques.
It never occurred to him to not clean the grill after each use. “I admit that I’m a little bit OCD and I was surprised that my friends didn’t share my enthusiasm for this task,” he says. “When I heard about people doing this professionally, I felt like I had discovered oil.” When he decided to start Empire BBQ Cleaning, he shut his marketing and branding company and delightedly dove into deep-cleaning courses. “I really enjoy the process,” he says. “I take photos as I’m doing each grill, and it’s a very dramatic ‘before’ and ‘after’ experience.” Pomeranz recommends that grill owners protect their investment by getting them professionally cleaned at least one to three times a year, depending on the amount of usage. “People are so excited about Empire BBQ Cleaning’s work that some have told me that they actually are using their grills more and are using more seasoning and marinades because they don’t care how messy it gets,” he says. Pomeranz, who uses bio-degradable materials and disposes of waste responsibly, transitions to oven cleaning in the winter months, which he’s just as enthused about as his grill work. When he’s not cleaning other people’s grills (he generally does three per day in two-hour stints) or his own, Pomeranz is, of course, grilling. “I recently made applewood smoked bacon from scratch,” he says, “and my kids and I really enjoyed it.” Learn how to improve the performance of your grill at empirebbqcleaning.com. EMPIRE BBQ CLE ANING’S RECIPE FOR A SPOTLESS GRILL
Supplies: • 2 27-gallon storage containers • 5-gallon bucket • Small bucket • Paper towels • Microfiber towels • Nitrile/PVC-coated gloves • Safety goggles • Stainless-steel scouring pad • Degreaser • Disinfectant spray • 3-inch to 4-inch paint scraper • Garbage bag • Tarp • Vacuum • Stainless-steel polish Turn the gas off. Place the tarp in front of—and if possible, underneath—the grill; put on gloves and goggles. Spray disinfectant generously throughout the inside of the grill and allow to set for 5 minutes. Remove the grill grates, bars and racks from the inside of the grill and set aside. Use the large bucket to fill one storage container with 10 gallons of warm/hot water. Add degreaser to the container (read instructions on bottle for how much). Add grill grates, racks and bars to the container and soak for 1 hour. Use the paint scraper to clean out grease, debris and food remains from the inside of the grill. If the burners come out, remove them and place them aside. Vacuum the remains out of the interior of the grill. Move larger pieces of debris and grease into the drip tray. Remove drip tray and empty contents into garbage, using the paint scraper to remove difficult chunks/pieces. In the small bucket, prepare a solution that’s one-part degreaser, two-parts warm water. Soak the scouring pad in the degreasing solution for a few seconds, then scrape and clean off grease residue and coating from the sides, back and hood of the grill interior, while using paper towels to clean and dry. Remove the grates, racks and bars in the storage container after one hour. Use the bucket to fill up 5 gallons of water in the second storage container to use as a rinse tank. Use the scouring pad to scrape grease and remains off the grates, racks and bars, and rinse off in the second container. Wipe down the grates, racks and bars with paper towels and do another round of scouring if necessary. Put the burners, bars, racks and grates back into the grill. Wipe down the grill cart storage area, sides and hood. Vacuum debris that may have fallen into the patio or grilling area and fold up the tarp. Turn the grill on and run it for 5 minutes before using.

Evan B. Pomeranz’s Baby Back Ribs
EVAN B. POMERANZ’S BABY BACK RIBS
After
Ingredients • High-quality cut of baby back ribs, like an organic slab from Whole Foods • ½ cup each of sea salt, garlic, rosemary and brown sugar • Dry rub seasoning, like a combination of BBQ rubs and seasoning • Apple cider vinegar • Apple juice • Butter • BBQ sauce Brine the ribs in a large container filled with 2 to 3 gallons of bottled (not tap) water and the sea salt, garlic, rosemary and brown sugar mixture for at least 24 hours in the refrigerator. Remove ribs from brine. Trim excess fat and use a knife to remove the membrane from the bone side. Coat ribs with apple cider vinegar and add dry rub seasoning to the slab. Let ribs sit at room temperature for 1 hour. Warm smoker to 225° F. (Pomeranz uses applewood and hickory burning fires.) Place the ribs on the smoker grates with aluminum drip pans filled with water underneath for added moisture. Keep a spray bottle filled with 1/3 each bottled water, apple juice and apple cider vinegar nearby. Spray the ribs generously every 30 minutes. Rotate the rib racks every hour. After 3 hours, wrap the ribs in aluminum foil, using a generous amount of butter and BBQ sauce inside the foil wrap. Return the ribs to the smoker. After 2 hours, remove the ribs and measure the temperature. Your target should be 190° F. Increase the temperature to 250-275° F and place ribs back on the smoker if the internal temperature needs be higher. Add BBQ sauce with a BBQ mop to the ribs, using more apple juice/cider spray. Monitor the ribs over the next 30 to 60 minutes until they are done. Let ribs sit for 30 minutes before slicing and eating MAR CH 2 0 2 2 | C I TYL I FE STYL E . C OM/B R I D G E WAT E R
