The Most Wonderful Time of the Year Nothing compares to the pure magic of the holiday season. While the hustle and bustle of decorating, shopping and a packed social calendar is certainly exhausting, there’s also an excitement in the air that consumes the month of December. During the holidays we often try to replicate what made the season feel so magical to us in our youth. The traditions we set for our own families often mirror some of what we experienced as a child. On page 36, Martinsville resident Liz Polo, owner of Havana Photography, tells us about a fun New Year's Eve tradition that she melded together from her family’s Cuban and Peruvian roots. This year when the clock strikes midnight I’ll have 12 grapes in one hand — and, of course, a glass of Champagne in the other. In my large Italian family, the Feast of the Seven Fishes on Christmas Eve is the main event of the season. While I’m not personally a master chef in the kitchen, cooking large quantities of food — and subsequently eating large quantities of food — is the Italian way. As a child, I’d complain about being held hostage at the dinner table for over four hours as each course was served, but as an adult, I’ve learned to treasure this family tradition. Later in the evening we like to have a little fun with a visit from Santa. As the kids have gotten older it’s been harder to hide which uncle is mysteriously missing from the room upon Santa’s arrival, but they still play along. I always remind my girls that you have to believe to receive. In this issue, we want to give you the gift of time and make things just a little bit easier for you. On page 20, home and garden blogger Stacy Ling gives simple tips to spruce up your home for the holiday season. On page 32, CakeOholic provides dessert recipes that will delight your friends and family and on page 40, Laura Friedman, Executive Director of the Shimon and Sara Birnbaum Jewish Community Center in Bridgewater, shares her favorite apple latkes recipe. Bridgewater Welcomes New Police Chief Captain John Mitzak was unanimously confirmed by the Town Council as Chief of the Bridgewater Police. Breathe Holiday Magic Into Your Home

I love entertaining during the holidays, inviting people into a cozy home, filled with seasonal ambiance. One of my favorite styles is the rustic farmhouse look, and one of the best aspects of this design is that it is easy to achieve and affordable. Below, I will show you how you can turn your home into a magical holiday space from the minute you walk to the front door to when you retire to your bedroom at night.

Dress Up the Dining Room I love to dress up my dining room table with a gorgeous tablescape and centerpiece. Get creative! For a centerpiece, use an unexpected container — like a vintage toolbox — and stuff it with faux greens, mini trees, Christmas present ornaments, pinecones and fairy lights. For each holiday table setting, I layered a cedar branch placemat, rattan chargers and two melamine decorative dinner plates. Because I love the wood of my farmhouse table, I prefer to leave it exposed so I layered a jute table runner over a flannel runner for some additional texture and to soften the look of the wood.

Set the Stage with the Front Porch As an avid gardener, I love to decorate my home with lots of greens and florals. On my front porch, I design cool winter containers with fresh cuttings from my yard. Heading into the holidays, my front urns were planted simply with dwarf Alberta spruces. I wanted to jazz them up with more greens but keep the spruces, so I underplanted them with fresh-cut winter greens. Winter container gardens are a great way to extend the gardening season and are much easier to create than they look. Planters are low-maintenance, require minimal investment and can last through February if properly cared for. They also can be very budget-friendly if you use cuttings from your yard. I prefer to keep mine with a winter theme so I don’t have to change much when the holidays are over, but you can give them a Christmas theme by using red berry sprigs, lights and bows. I extend the greenery from the entranceway into my home, where I have adorned my staircase with faux greens, string lights, large pinecones, white berry sprigs and a light beige bow. If you like poinsettias, go with faux since they are a short-term holiday plant.

Add a Glow to the Kitchen Cozy up your kitchen island by adding lots of faux greens, twinkle lights, pinecones and battery-operated candle lanterns. Decorate kitchen windows and cabinets with garland, small trees and twinkle lights. I love how warm and cozy my kitchen feels all lit up.

Tuck in Your Bedrooms in Festive Style Consider decorating your bedrooms for the holidays. There’s something about the soft, warm glow of twinkle lights and a pre-lit Christmas tree that makes going to bed a lot more inviting. To decorate the master bedroom, I added a small tree, twinkle lights, faux greens, cozy throw blankets, some faux fur, pom-poms and Christmas throw pillows to the neutral bedding. Since the palette of the room is neutral, I added a pop of red to make it feel more festive. With a little imagination, you can create a room that evokes all the magic and wonder that is this season.

Create a Cozy Living Room When you enter my living room, you’re greeted with a warm and cozy fire. Since we light our fireplace daily, I use faux greens so they do not dry out and always look gorgeous. I added two small faux evergreen trees that flank the flatscreen TV over the mantel, then added a faux cedar branch garland with some fairy lights. To add dimension, I tucked in oversized pinecones and neutral, textured ornaments.

“Moms of girls with curly hair: I get you. The struggle is real,” says Jessa Colón, owner of Hairitage Hair Lounge in Somerville, who is on a mission to educate mothers on how to style and maintain their daughters’ seemingly untamed locks.

“Natural hair is gorgeous; you just need the right tools and know-how.” As the holidays approach, Colón has created easy, seasonal styles for mothers and daughters with curly hair that are party-ready and will last several days.

Leave the braids dangling for younger girls.

TOOLS • 8-row nylon brush to untangle large areas without pain • Parting comb • 4 crocodile clips

• A natural boar bristle brush • 4 4mm elastic hair ties • 4 tiny hair elastic ties

STEPS In the bath after cleansing, apply a paraben-free, sulfate-free conditioner evenly throughout the head. Take an 8-row nylon brush and detangle hair section by section.

Make a part down the middle, then ear-to-ear, resulting in four quadrants.

Tie or clip up hair on top and sides, only leaving out the hair you’re detangling. Once completely detangled, rinse 50 percent of the conditioner out, leaving the rest in. With the parting comb, make a part down the middle, then ear-to-ear, resulting in four quadrants. Apply gel to each section one by one, then with the boar bristle brush, smooth out all the hair into a 4mm hair tie, making four ponytails. (This helps you reach all the shorter baby hairs around the entire hairline.) Braid each ponytail. Wear the braids for one day or sleep with them overnight to assure they are dry. After that, you have many options on how to style your daughter’s hair for the entire week:

St yles DAY 1: Leave the braids dangling for younger girls. For older girls, connect the front braids to the back braids to make them appear like a French braid. DAY 2: Four braids can turn into three by combining the back two. DAY 3: Three braids can turn into three crimped ponytails. Three braids can turn into three crimped ponytails. Two braids, unbraided, can make two crimped ponytails.

DAY 4: Three crimped ponytails can turn into two braids. DAY 5: Two braids, unbraided, can make two crimped ponytails. Passion and creativity mix it up in the kitchen of Akanksha Behari. The Basking Ridge resident always enjoyed baking cakes for friends and family, channeling her creativity through beautiful themes and designs. This passion led her to found her custom-art bakery, CakeOholic. During the pandemic shut down, she began teaching free online baking classes for kids and raised $2,000 in donations for frontline workers. Her classes reached students across the nation from the Northeast to the South and Midwest, as well as overseas in London and India. This sparked an idea, and she decided to start baking full-time.

She wants her students to also gain practical skills that can be used outside of class: The chemistry and physics of baking and the origins of the recipes. CakeOholic is an active member of the community. 1/2 c unsalted butter 6 oz bittersweet chocolate 2 eggs 2 egg yolks

• 1/4 c sugar • 1 pinch salt • 2 tbs flour

directions: 1. Preheat oven to 450° F. Butter and flour your ramekins. 2. Melt the butter with the chocolate on low heat in a double boiler or in the microwave. (If you use a microwave, heat the chocolate in 30-second intervals so it does not burn.) Whisk until smooth. 3. In a medium bowl, beat the eggs with the egg yolks, sugar and salt until thickened and pale. An electric mixer works best. 4. Fold the chocolate mixture and flour into the egg mixture. 5. Pour the batter into the ramekins and bake for 7 to 11 minutes. Ovens vary, so check to see if the top layer is set and not too jiggly. 6. Let the cakes cool in the ramekins for one minute, then cover each with an inverted dessert plate. 7. Carefully turn each one over, let stand for 10 seconds and then unmold. 8. Sift powdered sugar on top and garnish with berries and a scoop of vanilla ice cream.

1 3/4 c all-purpose flour 3/4 c unsweetened natural cocoa powder 1 3/4 c granulated sugar 2 tsp baking soda 1 tsp baking powder 1 tsp salt 2 tsp espresso powder (optional) 1/2 c vegetable oil, canola oil or melted coconut oil 2 large eggs,room temperature 2 tsp pure vanilla extract 1 c buttermilk 1 c freshly brewed strong hot coffee (regular or decaf)

CHOCOLATE BUTTERCREAM ingredients: • 2 1/2 sticks unsalted butter, softened to • room temperature • 3–4 c powder sugar • 3/4 c unsweetened cocoa powder (natural or Dutch process)

• 3–5 tbsp heavy cream, half-and-half or milk • 1/4 tsp salt • 1 tsp pure vanilla extract

directions: Whisk the flour, cocoa powder, sugar, baking soda, baking powder, salt and espresso powder together in a large bowl. Set aside. Using a mixer fitted with a whisk attachment (or use a whisk) mix the oil, eggs and vanilla together on medium-high speed until combined. Add the buttermilk and mix until combined. Pour the wet ingredients into the dry ingredients, add coffee and whisk or beat on low speed until the batter is completely combined. Batter is thin. Bake at 360° F for 30–40 minutes. Top with chocolate buttercream.

Every New Year’s Eve, my family gets dressed up. I mean, really dressed up: I have a sparkly dress I wear each December 31 with high heels. It’s one of the few times I wear high heels during the year. I believe when you get dressed up, it’s like you’re going dancing. I tell my children — Charlize, 12, Michael, 23, and Sara, 11 — that we should set a happy mood as we welcome in the new year. We eat dinner at 8, which is a tradition handed down from my husband, Carlos’ family. At midnight, we give a Champagne toast, then we each eat 12 green grapes while making a silent wish for the coming year each time we pop one in our mouths. I am Cuban and Carlos is Peruvian. Our grape celebration is a variation of a Spanish New Year’s Eve tradition that we had in both of our families in which people eat one grape each time the clock strikes midnight. Each clock strike and each grape represent the 12 months to come. We added the wishes.

INGREDIENTS • 2 eggs, well-beaten • 1 ½ c orange juice, yogurt or milk • 2 c all-purpose flour • 1 tsp baking powder • Dash of salt • ¼–½ c sugar (depending on taste) • 3 medium apples, peeled and coarsely grated • Vegetable oil for frying • Confectioners’ sugar

DIRECTIONS 1. Mix eggs with orange juice, yogurt or milk in a bowl. 2. In a separate bowl, combine the flour, baking powder, salt and sugar. 3. Add dry ingredients to the egg mixture along with the grated apples. 4. Heat a thin layer of oil in a skillet. Allowing 1 large tablespoon of batter per latke, drop into the hot oil. 5. Cook for about 2 minutes on each side or until slightly golden. 6. Drain on paper towels, sprinkle with confectioners’ sugar.

Giving Campaign Now in its third year, the City Lifestyle Giving Campaign will give away $300,000 this holiday season to help individual community members who would benefit from a helping hand during their time of need. But they need YOUR HELP to make it happen! Maybe you know of a single parent struggling to provide, an elderly person who has experienced loss, a child enduring a health issue, a co-worker suffering a sudden, unexpected tragedy or a neighbor with a financial hardship who has fallen between the cracks of getting assistance. Chances are you know someone with a specific need—even if nobody else does. To preserve and protect the dignity of every recipient, the City Lifestyle Giving Campaign is completely confidential. No identities will be revealed or publicized in ANY way. (Even those who nominate others may remain anonymous if they choose.) Last year, City Lifestyle was able to give to more than 70 recipients all over the country by sending checks in the mail through New Year’s Eve. (This year, the goal is to double that number with checks ranging in amount up to $3,000 each.)
