There is Always Something to be Thankful for WOW, BRIDGEWATER. How can it be that we are already nearing the end of the year? The holidays are around the corner, and pretty soon we will be writing out our New Year’s Resolutions. Perhaps 2021 will bring the return of normalcy?

Before the days get hectic and we start shopping for all of the people on our holiday list, we want to take this time to pause and reflect. This year has been a crazy journey with all of you. There’s certainly been no stranger year in our lives! Despite everything going on in the world, we are grateful that we get to create this magazine every month and connect with you and your families. While speaking with a friend the other day she said, “You really did pick a great time to launch this magazine!” Slightly confused and not sure if there was a hint of sarcasm in her statement, the bewildered looks on our faces invited her to continue, “Local community has never been more important than it is right now. People need this!” The magnitude of her statement is profound. Community is everything right now. Thank you for sharing your stories and for reading ours. Thank you for supporting the local businesses in our community, because without them, this magazine wouldn’t be possible. As we’ve said throughout the pandemic, we are all in this together!

dinner and figuring out how to manage get-togethers — or the lack thereof — can be stressful, but don’t forget to look at each person around your table (or virtual gathering) and remember how they have made a difference in your life. Life would be much more challenging without each other. 514 W 26TH ST., KANSAS CITY, MO

IMPACT 100 GARDEN STATE EMPOWERS WOMEN TO BECOME MAJOR PHILANTHROPISTS FOR NONPROFITS SERVING THEIR COMMUNITIES

Bridgewater Lifestyle | November 2020
THE CONCEPT IS SIMPLE, BUT POWERFUL: ONE WOMAN MAKES A $1,000 CONTRIBUTION, WHICH IS THEN MULTIPLIED BY 100 OTHER WOMEN’S DONATIONS TO AWARD A $100,000 GRANT TO A NONPROFIT IN THEIR COMMUNITY. That’s the philosophy behind Impact 100, a volunteer-run orga-

nization founded in 2001 to empower women to become philanthropists and make a difference in their communities. Since its inception, it has expanded to 60 chapters worldwide — including Impact 100 Garden State, which was launched in 2013 and serves Morris, Passaic, Somerset, Sussex and Union counties. To date, Impact 100 Garden State has awarded over $2 million in grants. “There are a lot of small grants available to these nonprofits, but few that are transformative like these,” says Debby Seme, Impact 100 Garden State president and Martinsville resident. With a yearly $1,000 donation, women can become members. 100% of the donation goes directly to grant recipients — other donations and sponsors cover administrative fees. This year, membership soared to 341 women, allowing the organization to award $100,000 grants to three nonprofits: Cornerstone Family Programs, Homeless Solutions Inc. and Zufall Health Center. Impact 100 Garden State added some of their administrative savings to the remaining balance of $41,000 to award $15,000 merit grants to four finalists: Bonnie Brae, Caring Contact, Family Promise and Norwescap. Debby stresses that they do not simply write checks for $100,000. She explains, “To get the funds, the grant recipients must sign a contract with us, set milestones to achieve over the three

years they have to complete their grant-funded program and show evidence of progress.” Each fall, volunteers reach out to about 800 area nonprofits in five focus groups — children and family; education; health and wellness; environment preservation and recreation; arts and culture — and invite them to submit applications for a specific program. Grant review and financial review committees vet applications to narrow the list to 15 semi-finalists, which then receive site visits (virtually this year). From these, seven are chosen to give presentations to members who then vote for their choice at an awards meeting. “Organizations have to show that their program will be transformational and sustainable,” Debby says. “It’s an emotional experience when we give out the awards; we all get choked up.” For more information, visit impact100gardenstate.org or email member@impact100gardenstate.org (member inquiry) or grants@impact100gardenstate.org (nonprofit inquiry). CULINARY CREATIONS
Balsamic Parmesan Bacon Brussels Sprouts THIS THANKSGIVING TURN THAT TIRED VEGETABLE INTO A CROWD PLEASER ARTICLE SHANNON COCHO
FOUR YEARS AGO I STARTED A BLOG CALLED ASTORI-A-US ABOUT MY ADVENTURES WITH MY NOW-HUSBAND TOM. He thought of the name because it sounded like the story of us and we lived in Astoria at the time. Our little story of us quickly became a blog about our vacations and all of our favorite places to eat. Last year we were ready to start a family and decided to relocate to Bridgewater. Shortly after our move, the entire world went on lock down and our adventures soon became what takeout we were ordering, what show we were watching on Netflix, or — my personal favorite — what pregnancy craving I was having. During all this time at home, I was also able to start doing something I love again — cooking. I grew up watching my grandmothers cook and entertain. I quickly grew into a foodie, and now as an adult, nothing gives me greater joy than finding a bunch of random ingredients in my kitchen and creating a new recipe from them. That’s where this recipe came from. I first tried it years ago in my one-bedroom — converted into a three-bedroom — Upper East Side apartment. This Thanksgiving, toss aside the usual suspects — I’m looking at you green bean casserole (even though I do love you) — and try a new dish instead. These Brussels sprouts are sweet, savory and smokey. Here's a new take on an old and tired vegetable. It’s easy as pie to make, so you'll have left over time to actually bake your pie! Ba l sa m ic Pa r mesa n Bac on Br u s sel s Sprout s i n g re d ient s: + 1 Lb Brussels Sprouts + 6 Pieces of Bacon + 1/2 Tsp Salt + 1 Tsp Black Pepper + 1 Tsp Garlic Powder + 1 Tbl Olive Oil + Parmesan and Balsamic Glaze to Taste
st eps: 1. Preheat oven to 400 degrees. 2. Cut ends of Brussels sprouts and cut again lengthwise. 3. Cut bacon into small chunks. 4. Toss sprouts and bacon with oil, salt, pepper and garlic powder. The salty bacon creates amazing fat so you won’t need a ton of oil or salt. 5. Place on a baking sheet and roast for 20-25 minutes until sprouts are brown and crispy and the bacon is perfectly roasted. 6. Remove from oven and top with cheese and the balsamic glaze to taste.
bonu s t ips: This recipe actually makes a fantastic weeknight meal too! Simply toss your sprouts with pasta. Bacon and pasta are perfection together. Plus, the Brussels sprouts make you think you are eating a dinner that’s good for you — which you kind of are. You can also make this dish lighter with turkey bacon or vegetarian with tempeh bacon. Just make sure you are watching it closely because turkey bacon burns quickly in the oven.

WALKING THE WALK
A JOURNEY DOWN THE WINDING LIFE PATH OF UNASSUMING SPIRITUAL LEADER FRANCIS CHAN
IMAGINE YOURSELF AS THE LEADER OF A THRIVING MEGACHURCH IN VENTURA COUNTY, CALIFORNIA, WITH MORE THAN 5,000 MEMBERS AND GROWING. You’re a New York Times bestseller making a million dollars in royalties from your first book and people love you—you’re on top of the world. Would you leave that all behind? Better yet, would you trade all of that, giving away 90% of your income to end up living in the poorest region of Hong Kong surrounded by people struggling to make it by on just 50 cents a day? For most, it probably sounds like a tale of riches to rags; an unfortunate and unwanted result of someone falling upon hard times. But for Francis Chan, a church planter and best-selling author who speaks to thousands of people around the world each year, it’s exactly what he did. And exactly what he needed—an opportunity to walk down a winding path that led him toward fulfilling his purpose; toward becoming a

Watch the full interview @ CityLifestyle.com! Francis, born in San Francisco, was raised in a very traditional Chinese home and navigated a challenging upbringing. His mother died while giving birth to him. His father remarried, then his stepmother died in a car accident when he was 8. His father remarried again, then, when Francis was 12, died of cancer. Twenty-six and newly married, Francis and his wife Lisa founded Cornerstone Community Church in Simi Valley, California in the early 90s, beginning with a membership of 30 people. Within the first two months, the church grew to 100. By 2000, membership grew even more to 1,600. And by 2008, Cornerstone Community Church was one of the largest in Ventura County and Francis’ then-new book “Crazy Love” was a New York Times bestseller. Then, in 2010, Francis decided to leave it behind in pursuit of a more humble and impactful way of life. The $1 million his bestselling book made in the first year, plus the money it continues to make? Francis signed it all over to a charitable gift fund helping the poor and victims of human trafficking. After making the decision to leave Cornerstone and wrestling with what the next step would be, Francis and Lisa ended up selling their Simi Valley house and moving their family of six at the time overseas to India, Thailand and China, where he was able to embrace new interests and activities by doing what the locals do, and where he also saw an inspiring shift in culture and spiritual values. “I wish we could learn and see the sacrifice of others,” he says. “Their mentality really isn’t a consumer mindset of ‘Here’s my needs, here’s what I feel, no one cares about me— me, me, me, me. Overseas they’re just obsessed with each other and thinking about how to get to the poor—the truly poor—like ‘We’re going to starve today,’ or ‘We’re selling off kids today.’ That type of poor. There’s just a lot more urgency.” In the throes of a pandemic, quarrels over U.S. politics, a growing divide among people and beliefs, and the unsurety of life, Francis’ message of focus and fulfillment can be summed up simply: take your eyes off yourself.
“People that I’ve found that have spent their lives truly loving others are the j o y f u l p e o p l e .” 30
