The Home Issue

Home. It’s our sanctuary, our foundation, and the place where life unfolds. Home is where we begin and end each day, where our lives take shape, and where our hearts find rest. While the specifics of what “home” looks like vary for each of us, its significance is universal.

This month’s issue focuses on what makes home special—from the warmth of shared meals and thoughtfully designed spaces to the people who bring it all to life.

This month, we had the privilege of connecting with local businesses and individuals who shape this community. Their stories highlight the creativity, resilience, and heart that make this area feel like home. We hope that as you turn these pages, you’ll be inspired to strengthen your connections—whether within your neighborhood, your city, or your own walls.

Many of our readers tell us they hold onto this magazine long after the month on its cover, treasuring it as a piece of home—whether as coffee table art or a source of inspiration. That’s a tradition we’re proud to uphold, and we remain committed to delivering the value you expect each month.

Thank you for welcoming us into your homes. Here’s to making this March a celebration of the spaces and people that matter most.

Happy March!

A Conversation About GLP-1s with Dr. Christina Rahm

Beyond the scale: What GLP-1 users need to know about long-term strength, energy, and metabolic resilience

GLP-1 medications are everywhere right now. From a scientific standpoint, what do you think most people misunderstand about how these medications actually work in the body?

Many people assume GLP-1 medications fix their metabolism, but they primarily work by reducing appetite and slowing stomach emptying. Weight loss occurs because people eat less, not because the medication repairs how organs and systems communicate. Key factors like muscle preservation, cellular energy, and metabolic resilience are often not addressed at the same time. Think of the body like a company trying to survive a downsizing. Without the right strategy, it doesn’t just eliminate excess — it often cuts its most valuable assets. Muscle tissue is metabolically expensive, so it’s frequently lost first. The result may be someone who is lighter, but also weaker and less resilient long term. That’s why I formulated Crush, an essential amino acid–based muscle support formula, to help preserve lean tissue and cellular energy during periods of reduced intake.

One of the most searched questions right now is about long-term effects and what happens when someone wants to scale off GLP-1 medications. What should people understand?

The long-term outcome of GLP-1 use is heavily influenced by what’s happening while someone is on the medication. Preserving muscle, maintaining nutrient density, and supporting metabolic signaling during use all shape what happens when appetite returns or medication is reduced. If those foundations aren’t in place, people may struggle with fatigue, strength loss, or weight regain. Scaling off successfully isn’t about willpower — it’s about preparation. Sculpt was designed to support glucose regulation, appetite balance, and metabolic pathways, offering a structured approach for those reducing or transitioning off GLP-1 medications.

MORE A MOVE THAN

CREATING COMMUNITY THROUGH REAL ESTATE

Williamson County has a way of turning newcomers into neighbors, and the LCT Team was created with that spirit in mind. What started as a passion for serving people well quickly became a mission rooted in trust, education, and community connection. As growth has brought new energy to the area, the team has leaned in, guiding clients not just to the right home, but into the rhythms, relationships, and local culture that make this county feel special.

What inspired the creation of the LCT Team, and how has your mission evolved as Williamson County has grown and changed?

The LCT Team was created out of a genuine desire to serve people well. Not just through transactions, but through relationships. Early on, it became clear that clients needed more than market expertise; they needed guidance, trust, and a team who truly understood the fabric of Williamson County. As the area has grown and attracted people from all over the country, our mission has evolved to focus even more on education, connection, and advocacy. Growth brings opportunity, but it also brings complexity, and our role is to help clients navigate change while preserving the character and community that make this area so special.

How do you help clients go beyond simply buying or selling a home to truly feeling rooted in their new community?

We believe a home is just the starting point. From day one, we make it a priority to understand our clients’ lifestyles, interests, and values so we can help them plug into the right neighborhoods, schools, events, and local organizations. We introduce clients to builders, business owners, and community leaders, and we stay connected well after closing day. Whether it’s recommending local favorites,

inviting clients to community events, or supporting causes they care about, we focus on helping them feel like they belong.

What sets Williamson County apart as a place to live, and how do you help clients discover its hidden gems and local culture?

Williamson County offers a rare blend of charm, natural beauty, and forward momentum. You’ll find historic town squares, rolling countryside, vibrant local businesses, and a strong sense of pride among residents. We help clients discover the places that don’t always show up on a map. From the coffee shop where everyone knows your name, the back roads with the best sunset views, and the community events that bring neighbors together. Those details are what turn a location into a lifestyle.

Can you share a memorable story where your team helped a client forge meaningful connections after their move?

We’ve had many clients relocate from out of state who initially felt unsure about starting over in a new place. One family in particular moved without knowing anyone locally, and through introductions to neighbors,

PROVIDED

schools, community groups, and local businesses, they quickly found their circle. Today, they’re deeply involved in the community and often tell us how connected they feel, not because of the house alone, but because of the relationships that grew from it. Seeing that transformation is one of the most rewarding parts of what we do.

How does your team collaborate internally to create a seamless and supportive experience for your clients?

Our team works as a true collaboration, with each person bringing specific strengths to the table. From agents and marketing professionals to administrative support, everyone is aligned around clear communication and a shared commitment to service. We meet regularly, anticipate needs before they arise, and ensure clients always feel informed and supported. That teamwork allows us to deliver a consistent, thoughtful experience at every stage of the process.

What role do local partnerships and community involvement play in your approach to real estate?

Local partnerships are essential to how we operate. We work closely with builders, small businesses, nonprofits, and community organizations because strong communities are built through collaboration. Giving back and staying involved isn’t something we do on the side; it’s woven into our culture. Supporting local causes and businesses strengthens the relationships that make this area thrive, and it allows us to serve our clients in a more meaningful way.

How do you balance the emotional side of moving with the practical aspects of buying and selling real estate?

Moving is one of the most emotional transitions people experience, and we never lose sight of that. While we’re highly

strategic and data-driven when it comes to pricing, negotiations, and timing, we also lead with empathy. We listen, we communicate clearly, and we guide clients through decisions with patience and honesty. By addressing both the emotional and practical sides together, we help reduce stress and build confidence throughout the process.

What advice would you give to someone relocating to Williamson County who wants to make lasting connections here? Be open, get involved, and take the time to explore. Attend local events, support small businesses, volunteer, and introduce yourself to neighbors. This is a community that values relationships, and when you show up with a genuine interest in being part of it, connections happen naturally. Williamson County has a welcoming spirit, and those who engage with it tend to feel at home quickly.

What does success look like for your team?

For us, success isn’t measured only by sales. It’s measured by trust, longterm relationships, and the knowledge that our clients feel confident, supported, and connected long after their transaction is complete.

171 YEARS OF MAKING HOUSES FEEL LIKE HOME

B.F. MYERS FURNITURE & MATTRESS CONTINUES A LEGACY OF SERVICE IN MIDDLE TENNESSEE

ARTICLE BY SOPHIE BROCK PHOTOGRAPHY PROVIDED

Investing in high-quality furniture and mattresses that are built to last is not something to take lightly. While shopping for home essentials online may seem like the easiest option, Middle Tennessee locals have access to a trusted, family-owned alternative. B.F. Myers Furniture & Mattress offers two convenient locations in Franklin and Goodlettsville, free delivery, customizable furniture, exceptional quality, and a strong commitment to giving back, making it a true one-stop shop for transforming a house into a home.

With a legacy spanning 171 years, B.F. Myers stands as one of Tennessee’s oldest family-owned furniture retailers. Founded by the Myers family and now operated by the Erwin family, the company continues to uphold the same commitment to exceptional service and craftsmanship that has defined it for generations. Today, Julianne Goodwin represents the third generation of the Erwin family to help lead B.F. Myers, carrying forward its longstanding tradition of quality and care.

“I think the biggest thing for us is customer service,” Julianne explains. “Especially now in the world of buying online and no real interface with people, it's how you treat the customers when they come into the store that keeps them coming back. Making sure that we treat everyone like family is the biggest thing.”

Between B.F. Myers’ 60,000-square-foot showroom in Goodlettsville and its 40,000-square-foot location in Franklin, there is virtually no type of furniture or mattress they can’t offer or customize. As Middle Tennessee continues to experience rapid growth, many newcomers and longtime residents alike have turned to B.F. Myers for both convenience and selection. The company also offers free delivery within a 50-mile radius of either store, and in 2025 reached a new milestone by delivering to customers in seven different states. Today, B.F. Myers carries nearly 100 brands, with approximately 80 percent of its products available for customization.

Both locations feature design centers where customers can customize upholstery selections and utilize a room planner experience. Each showroom has an in-house designer available to guide clients through the custom design process, helping them visualize how each piece will fit and function within their home. Whether through an in-home visit to measure the space or by working with measurements provided by the client, B.F. Myers ensures customers can confidently envision their furniture before making a purchase.

Customization is at the heart of what makes a house feel truly personal, and B.F. Myers’ design process is built around that philosophy. With every family living differently, the ability to special order and tailor pieces ensures each space reflects the needs, routines, and lifestyle of the people who use it.

“What you need for your family might be different than what I need for my family,” Julianne explains. “So the design center gives people an option to truly customize for their own life.”

With endless customization options, B.F. Myers makes transforming any house into a home both seamless and personal. The remaining question, then, is how do you know what type of furniture you should be investing in?

“To me, it's where you spend most of your time,” she says. “If you’re going to be in your living room, invest in a sectional. If you hang out in the kitchen, invest in a dining table.”

Furniture has the power to completely shift the tone of a space. In recent years, design trends have moved away from cooler palettes in favor of warmer tones that create a more inviting, lived-in feel. Combined with thoughtful paint choices, the right furniture can transform an entire room, turning it into something both functional and emotionally grounding.

“You could see a blank canvas, and you blink, and it looks like a totally different room,” Juli explains. “I think that same idea of the warmth that can just really make you feel like it's not a place that you just go and walk in and take your shoes off at the end of the day. It's where you relax and where you make memories with your family, but the furniture is the base of it.”

Most recently, B.F. Myers utilized its BFM Cares initiative to partner with the United Service Organizations (USO), helping furnish the BNA Airport Lounge to create a welcoming, comfortable space for service members and their families. Through BFM Cares, the company consistently gives back to the community in meaningful ways, from donating more than $20,000 to the Susan G. Komen Foundation in support of breast cancer awareness and research, to supporting local schools through community events. The initiative has also packed dozens of boxes for Operation Christmas Child and contributed hundreds of dollars toward teachers’ Amazon wish lists, further reinforcing B.F. Myers’ commitment to serving the communities it calls home.

B.F. Myers is built on generations of care, proving that when you walk through their doors, you’re not just a customer, you’re family.

We have braved it through the hearty winter and now it is time for a bright new spin on cuisine

ARTICLE AND PHOTOGRAPHY BY MARY COMPTON

DIRECTIONS:

Preheat the oven to 200 degrees F. Heat a large skillet over medium-high heat. Season the chicken with salt and pepper on both sides. Add 1 tablespoon of oil to the skillet. Dredge 2 chicken cutlets in flour, shake off any excess, and place in the skillet. Cook until golden, about 1 1/2 minutes per side; transfer to a baking dish. Repeat with the remaining 1 tablespoon of oil and the other 2 chicken cutlets. Cover the dish loosely with foil; place it in the oven while you prepare the vegetables. Add the butter to the hot skillet, then add the scallions and mushrooms; cook, stirring occasionally, until the mushrooms brown, about 4 minutes. Pour in the broth and bring to a boil, scraping up any browned bits with a wooden spoon. Cook until the liquid is reduced by half, about 3 minutes. Add the cream and boil until the sauce thickens slightly, 3 to 4 more minutes. Stir in the snap peas and heat through; season with salt and pepper. Serve the chicken topped with the creamy vegetables. Yum!

Easy Peasy Creamy Chicken with Mushrooms and Snap Peas:

INGREDIENTS:

• 4 chicken cutlets patted dry

• Kosher salt and freshly ground pepper

• 2 tablespoons vegetable oil

• All-purpose flour, for dredging

• 1 tablespoon unsalted butter

• 2 scallions, thinly sliced

• 8 ounces mushrooms, either button, cremini, shiitake, or a combination, and quartered

• 1 ¼ cups low-sodium chicken broth

• ¾ cup heavy cream

• 2 cups sugar snap peas, stemmed, and halved lengthwise

Decadent Dessert Crepes: Easier Than

You Think

INGREDIENTS:

• 4 eggs, lightly beaten

• 1 1/3 cups of milk

• 2 tablespoons butter, melted

• 1 cup all-purpose flour

• 2 tablespoons white sugar

• ½ teaspoon salt

• 1 teaspoon vanilla

• ½ teaspoon cinnamon

DIRECTIONS:

In a large bowl, whisk together eggs, milk, melted butter, flour, sugar, and salt until smooth. Heat a medium-sized skillet or crepe pan over medium heat. Grease a pan with a small amount of butter applied with a brush. Using a serving spoon or small ladle, spoon about 3 tablespoons of crepe batter into the hot pan, tilting the pan so that the bottom surface is evenly coated. Cook over medium heat, 1 to 2 minutes on a side, or until golden brown. Sprinkle with cinnamon. Serve straight away. Bon Appétit!

Tips:

• Stack finished crepes with parchment paper between them to prevent sticking

• The batter should be very thin, like heavy cream

• Keep crepes warm in the oven while cooking the rest (200 degrees F)

• Other variations include sprinkling with sugar and lemon, topping with whipped cream, ice cream, or a favorite fruit

THE BEST IN OUTDOOR LIVING SOLUTIONS

Clients value the broad range of services and professional know-how

After working in the automotive industry for many years, engineers Dave Kmita and Todd Baker wanted to forge a new career path. Longtime friends, they were tired of the 9-to-5 corporate environment. After extensive research and considering several opportunities, they founded a multi-service landscaping company.

“As engineers, we're used to building processes and problem-solving,” says Dave. “Owning your own business is all about solving problems every day, even if they're not mechanical.”

The two Franklin residents combined their unique set of skills to create LawnValue, a company with a strong managerial presence. It offers a wide range of services for residential and commercial customers, including regular lawn maintenance,

hardscape, landscape design, lighting, and irrigation installation and maintenance. The company can also provide tree or shrub removal, new fences and decks, driveways and patios, amazing outdoor kitchens, and other services too numerous to mention. They want to be a one-stop shop for all of their customers’ needs, and make spending time on their properties enjoyable all year round.

“Outdoor living is a natural fit for this part of Tennessee,” says project manager Cassie Thornton. “Homeowners are often looking for ways to bring the comfort of indoor living outside, whether that means a covered patio, a screened-in porch, a cozy outdoor fireplace or fire pit, or a welcoming space to gather with friends and family—all while taking in the beauty of our seasons.”

One recent project involved incorporating landscaping into a client’s pool project by using built-in brick planters throughout the pool and outdoor kitchen areas to create a more cohesive look. “As the project evolved, the clients asked us to help bridge a few gaps with other vendors, so we stepped in to complete the outdoor kitchen, design a custom bench and pool wall railing, and finalize the integrated lighting,” she says.

The client appreciated the team’s ability to jump in quickly, which helped keep installations and inspections moving smoothly. “Managing multiple trades is something we take pride in—it allows us to maintain a unified vision, ensure every detail works together, and keep projects on schedule from start to finish,” says Cassie.

She and the rest of the team also stay current with trends and can assist customers with the latest designs. One of these is checkerboard-style patios.

“It’s a very popular pattern in fashion and interiors and is making its way outdoors,” she says. “We love this trend because it strikes the perfect balance between playful and timeless.”

As with any design decision, Cassie says they always consider the overall feel of the homeowner’s space to ensure the patio presents as a natural extension of the home rather than a standalone feature.

“There are many ways to interpret the look—from large-format stained concrete to smaller porcelain tile,” she says. “You can personalize it with bold contrasts, such as black-and-white large-format porcelain, or opt for an elegant, understated approach using tone-on-tone neutrals.”

This type of pattern, she explains, is a classic motif with deep historical roots, making it an ideal way to add character and visual interest while maintaining long-term appeal. “For homeowners thinking ahead to future renovations, a neutral palette is a smart choice that offers flexibility and longevity.”

Every homeowner and every project can vary greatly, which is something Dave and Todd really love about the business. “We enjoy it because every day is different,” says Dave. “We have so many services and so many customers that we never know what’s going to happen next.”

LawnValue has grown tremendously since its founding five years ago. “We started with zero customers, and we built it all organically,” he says. “Today we have thousands of customers.”

Now, they want to help others enter the landscaping arena by franchising LawnValue. Instead of just having a Franklin location, they want to expand all over the Southeast.

To find out more about this great opportunity, contact Dave and Todd at 615-358-0012 or email customerservice@lawnvalue.com.

The Fresh Start

A GUIDE TO PEACEFUL AND INTENTIONAL SPRING CLEANING

Take a second to close your eyes and picture this: The afternoon sun streams through your windows, casting a warm glow across the room. Outside, Robins and Blue Jays sing their familiar melody, welcoming the season’s return. A gentle breeze slips through the slightly cracked window, carrying the crisp scent of early spring as your curtains sway softly. You stand in your kitchen, pouring a midday cup of coffee, feeling lighter—hopeful even—because warmer days are on their way.

There’s something about this fresh, ethereal feeling that not only melts away the last traces of winter but also sparks a quiet urge to refresh our surroundings. The cupboards that need decluttering, the baseboards that have gone untouched for months, the unworn clothes that no longer serve us—it all calls for renewal. This is the essence of spring cleaning: clearing out the old to make space for the new, both in our homes and in our minds.

For some, the idea of cleaning feels anything but peaceful. The thought of tackling clutter and dust can be overwhelming, turning what should be a refreshing transition into a dreaded chore. That’s why we’ve created a simple, practical guide to help you navigate spring cleaning with ease, turning it into a rhythmic, intentional process that mirrors the calm of the season itself.

Spring cleaning isn’t just about scrubbing and decluttering—it’s about creating a home that nurtures and uplifts you. By embracing this season of renewal with a gentle, intentional approach, you can welcome spring with open arms and a refreshed spirit.

Michael Oher: Purpose Beyond Football

SUPER BOWL CHAMPION MICHAEL OHER SHARES JOURNEY BEHIND THE OHER FOUNDATION.

ARTICLE BY MORGAN RAUM | PHOTOGRAPHY PROVIDED

From Tennessee roots to national recognition, Michael Oher’s journey is one marked by resilience, perseverance, and inspiration. Before he became the famed NFL champion he is today, he was just a young boy in Memphis with big dreams and even bigger determination. Simply surviving the majority of his childhood, by the age of ten, he had been in and out of foster care, lived on the streets, and already missed almost two years of education.

“My first accomplishment—before sports, before anything—was just going to school and trying to get an education. I didn't have to go to school… I didn't have anyone waking me up [in the morning]… I just went on my own, and that's when the journey started for me,” Oher shares.

In eighth grade, he found his true stride in sports, beginning with church basketball and quickly emerging as a standout athlete in basketball, baseball, and football. His talent was inevitable, and by graduation, he was one of the most sought-after five-star football recruits in the country. In 2005, he began his first year at The University of Mississippi, earning First-Team All-SEC honors and being recognized as one of the top offensive linemen in college football. Soon after, he became a dominant SEC lineman and first-round NFL Draft pick, playing for the Baltimore Ravens before signing with the Tennessee Titans in 2014. Oher’s story is a testament to his hard work and dedication—and also inspired the award-winning film, “The Blindside .”

“I thought [by] going to school—if I could get to a community college—that would be great for me. Sports were always on my radar, but it wasn't the end-all be-all for me,” he shares. “[I got to attend] a good high school because I was a good athlete… it wasn't my grade point average. If that was the case, I wouldn't have gotten in there.”

Inspired by his own journey, Oher has remained committed to changing the narrative for children—not just athletes—who lack access to critical resources. He built The Oher Foundation in 2018 to grant scholarships, mentorship programs, and leadership initiatives, as well as to create opportunities for the next generation and empower them to break barriers and reach their full potential. Not only does the foundation provide students with full tuition to their partner schools—such as Lipscomb University— but they also supply transportation to and from school, a mentor program, and a success coordinator to join them in their classes and help the transition while being someone they can confide in.

An inspiration both on and off the field, Oher’s definition of success has always gone beyond beating the odds—it’s about motivating those around him to become the best version of themselves. During his time at the University of Mississippi, he met his wife, Tiffany, and the pair has since built a life together in Brentwood, raising five children and celebrating their marriage in November 2022. The Oher family has called Middle Tennessee home for over a decade and loves the community they have built here. Tiffany plays a pivotal role in The Oher Foundation, diligently working behind the scenes to ensure their structure and strategy are carried out with excellence. Together, the couple strike a thoughtful balance between purpose and execution, creating meaningful and lasting impact for those they serve.

“Michael inspires through his strength, his kindhearted nature, and his resilience… just the way he moves through life and how he takes care of his family,” Tiffany shares. “We lean on one another in the Oher household… it’s not about what we do or how the public sees us, it's about how our kids view us and how God sees us that matter the most.”

“I started playing football in eighth grade… we didn't win a game my first season, but I just enjoyed being a part of something. That gave me the motivation that I needed to go to school.”
“I didn't want to be a statistic. I wanted to break that cycle.”

Thankful for the community they have built—both locally and beyond—Oher reflects on the work they have done through his foundation and the work they will continue to do to make a difference. Whether it’s attending an event of the foundation, volunteering, or simply taking the time to learn about their mission, the team is grateful for everyone’s help in working to raise awareness to such an important cause.

“I want to continue to grow and get the foundation into other schools. So many people talk about making this world a better place, and I like to say you're only as strong as your weakest link. We have to start from the ground up—and for me, it starts with education,” Oher shares on his goals for the foundation. “[I want the] kids coming through the program to [know] that everything is at their fingertips and in their control… they can do anything that they want to do, they just have to put in the work and get it done.”

“It changes everything when someone is educated… we have to start there, but we have to start with our young people. If we can try to focus on that, I think we’ll see a change for the generations to come.”

PRO FESSIONAL AND RELIABLE SERVICES FOR WINDOWS, SIDING AND ROOFING

YOUR HOME IMPROVE

As the owner and founder of Professional Home Improvements in Nashville, JJ Morris is carrying on a family legacy. “My dad owned his own company with the same name when I was a little kid, and I remember going with him on the weekends while I was in school and in the summer,” he says. “I was always the one holding a ladder for him, handing him screws, and helping out. That’s how I got started.”

After working for others in the construction industry for 20 years, JJ founded his own company three years ago. He decided to use the name Professional Home Improvements in order to honor his father, Jerry, who passed away five years ago. “It doesn't really tell what we do necessarily, but it has sentimental value to me.”

Although the original company focused only on new and replacement windows, JJ expanded his offerings to include roofing and siding. “Those three just seem to go hand in hand, especially windows and siding,” he says. “They might call me out for one, but then have issues with the others too.”

While customers may not need all three services immediately, they appreciate the option to call him back in the future. They already know they can trust him and his team to get the job done right and that he will be accessible.

“One thing I want to change about this industry is its bad reputation for getting back to people, and so I always try to answer a call,” says JJ. “If I can't answer immediately, I’ll respond shortly. It’s all about communication, and it's not that difficult.”

Communication also includes keeping clients informed. “I keep my customers involved in the process,” he says. “For instance, if it's a window, I make sure that they know the steps we take once the order is placed. I also give them a tentative date for scheduling.”

JJ is happy to help with colors and designs as well. “I have a really good design eye, so I’m able to direct them with what would look best for their home. We did siding on a house last week that was this really ugly bird egg blue, and the owners never liked it. After the job was finished, they told me that they loved their home now. That’s what makes what we do so worthwhile.”

He also believes that the warranty he provides is another thing that sets Professional Home Improvements apart. Most of the high-quality brands he uses, such as Pella and Andersen, offer lifetime warranties on their windows, but he also provides a lifetime warranty on the installation. “I want customers to trust me and understand that I’m not just going to take their money, do the job, and walk away. I'm committed if there is ever an issue.”

“I'M ALWAYS THERE WHEN A JOB STARTS, AND I'M THERE PERIODICALLY THROUGHOUT THE JOB, BECAUSE I WANT TO MAKE SURE MY GUYS KNOW EXACTLY WHAT WE'RE DOING AND THAT THEY HAVE THE MATERIALS AND ANYTHING ELSE THEY MAY NEED.”

JJ also wants to stress that he doesn’t base costs on where people live. “Brentwood and Franklin are two of the wealthiest cities in the state, and people have this fear that when they give me their address, I’m going to charge more. I’m not the cheapest or the most expensive, but whether you're super wealthy or you're barely getting by, my pricing structure is the same. I believe in treating people fairly.”

While he’s busy running the business and handling all sales, he also spends a lot of time on job sites. “I'm always there when a job starts, and I'm there periodically throughout the job, because I want to make sure my guys know exactly what we're doing and that they have the materials and anything else they may need,” says JJ.

His experienced contractors clearly understand what’s expected of them. “I make sure they know how I want it done,” he says. “We're not going to cut corners. We're going to do it the right way, whatever that takes.”

JJ cannot stand a messy job site and believes it’s disrespectful to the homeowner. It’s also a safety issue. If nails or other debris are left around at the end of the day, they can be a threat to children and pets. “I'm very picky, and I find that my guys are getting pickier too and catching things before I do. I know that I've got the right guys and that they’re doing good work.”

While he says replacing windows, siding, and roofing is not always as exciting as redoing a new kitchen or bathroom, he knows that when people call, they really need him. “No one really wants to call me, but I love being able to help when they do, and it's really exciting to see someone's home take shape.”

JJ hopes that in the near future, his son, Bennett, a college sophomore, will be working alongside him and one day take over to continue the legacy of Professional Home Improvements.

INSIDE KEYSTONE OUTDOOR LIVING’S APPROACH TO CREATING TIMELESS OUTDOOR SPACES IN MIDDLE TENNESSEE

As winter fades and warmer days approach, now is the perfect time to think about creating an outdoor space you can truly enjoy. Keystone Outdoor Living transforms backyards into personal escapes designed for relaxing, entertaining, and soaking up the seasons. With roots in Pennsylvania and over 40 years of experience serving central and southeastern PA, Keystone expanded to the Nashville market in 2024, continuing its commitment to exceptional craftsmanship and service.

“We truly love being part of this new and growing market,” Marcus Stoltzfus explains. “Nashville has been incredibly welcoming, and we’re excited to bring our craftsmanship and quality to the area. When people see our work firsthand, they quickly become excited about what’s possible for their own backyard.”

As the name suggests, Keystone Outdoor Living's expertise offers custom patios, porches, outdoor kitchens, and more. With a focus on thoughtful design and high-quality materials, they create outdoor spaces that truly enhance the way clients live at home. Each project begins with a complimentary design consultation and estimate, ensuring every space is tailored to the client’s vision.

“That process allows us to truly understand how they want to use their space, and then pair those ideas with our design expertise,” Marcus says. “The result is a personalized outdoor environment that’s not only beautiful, but functional and calming—something our clients can enjoy for years to come. Creating spaces that support relaxation and well-being is central to everything we do.”

Outdoor living continues to grow in popularity, and homeowners are increasingly recognizing the health and wellness benefits of spending more time outside. From reducing stress and boosting mood to encouraging connection and relaxation, a well-designed outdoor space can have a meaningful impact on everyday life. Rather than an afterthought, these areas are becoming intentional extensions of the home, places to slow down, recharge, and reconnect.

With summer just around the corner, now is also an ideal time to refresh or reimagine outdoor spaces in preparation for the season ahead. Whether it’s making small upgrades or planning a full transformation, thoughtful improvements can help homeowners make the most of the warmer months and fully enjoy their backyard.

“As soon as warmer weather arrives, people naturally turn their attention to their backyard,” Marcus says. “Even simple updates—like refreshing a deck surface, adding comfortable seating, or improving lighting—can completely change how a space is used. At Keystone, we focus on creating outdoor areas that invite people to spend more time outside with friends and family, whether that’s hosting gatherings or simply relaxing at the end of the day.”

Looking ahead, investing in an updated patio or outdoor living area offers benefits that go far beyond aesthetics. Creating a comfortable, inviting backyard encourages more time spent outside, whether that’s enjoying morning coffee in the fresh air, hosting summer gatherings, or simply unwinding after a long day. With proven health and wellness benefits like reduced stress, improved mood, and stronger connections with family and friends, now is the perfect time to transform outdoor spaces into personal retreats that can be enjoyed all season long and for years to come.

For homeowners ready to take the next step, Keystone Outdoor Living offers the expertise and guidance needed to turn those outdoor dreams into reality. From the initial complimentary design consultation to the final build, their team works closely with each client to ensure every detail reflects how the space will be used and enjoyed. With decades of experience, a commitment to quality craftsmanship, and a thoughtful, client-centered approach, Keystone Outdoor Living makes creating a personalized outdoor oasis both seamless and rewarding.

Behind The Scenes With Dead Horse Branding

Nashville’s award-winning brand strategy and creative agency helps creatives saddle up and build standout brands.

Dead Horse Branding started 10 years ago with married duo Rick Caballo and Melissa Core-Caballo. The branding company started from the “bare bones” and up, said Melissa. The name came from Rick’s Spanish and Australian roots, with Caballo being the Spanish word for horse. Both Rick and Melissa are from Wollongong, Australia. They are self-starters, having left school at an early age to pursue their interests.

Upon meeting one another by a mutual friend from Nashville, the couple have been inseparable for 16 years.

Their business style is creative, not corporate, with a strong family style. They welcome each client as if they were a part of their own household of four.

Rick and Melissa guide their clients in the seamless process of brand building. They have worked with companies like Hallmark, TEDx, and Lionsgate, as well as names like Johnny Depp, Steven Tyler’s Solo Band, Duck Dynasty, the Bo Diddley Estate, and Country Music Hall of Famer Tony Brown.

The seven different areas of focus for brand building are strategy, logo and graphic design, photography, website development, publicity, social media and marketing, and licensing. The team is extremely thorough with the customer’s wishes.

Melissa loves “making others’ dreams come true” and “being the road map to get there.”

Rick and Melissa measure success by the freedom they have in working with others to create something substantial and long-lasting for their clients. The flexibility of their work encourages them to do their best and fuels a passion for their industry. Rick describes the freedom of their work as being “not as tied to the hook.” They are creative with each client, whatever their needs.

When asked if they have achieved success and what success means to them, they answered that having lifelong friendships, relationships with their clients, and a happy family have made them successful.

“Reward to me is the client feels happy and loves what we do,” said Rick, and “seeing a smile on the client’s face.”

Six Easy Ways to Incorporate Self-Care Into Your Home

Self-Care Starts at Home

Self-care doesn’t have to mean expensive treatments or leaving your house. Creating intentional space to slow down, reset, and recharge at home allows you to care for yourself in a way that’s sustainable, comforting, and easy to return to, no matter how busy life gets.

Put Down The Phone

Putting your phone down, even for a short period, can make a noticeable difference in how you feel at home. Creating intentional screen-free time allows you to be present with your surroundings and yourself. Use this time to sit quietly, read, connect with others, or enjoy a simple moment of stillness. Without the pressure to respond or constantly consuming content, your thoughts and body will feel more at ease. Even thirty minutes without your phone can help reduce stress and make your home routine feel calmer, more peaceful, and grounded.

Take an Everything Shower

An “everything shower” turns a basic routine into a full self-care moment. Take your time washing your hair, exfoliating, shaving, or using your favorite scented products. Let the warm water relax your muscles and wash away the stress of the day. This isn’t about perfection; it’s all about comfort and care. Wrapping up in a clean towel and putting on cozy clothes afterward only adds to the experience. An everything shower can help you feel refreshed, calm, and more connected to yourself, while also naturally boosting your mood, making it an easy yet effective form of at-home self-care.

Stretch and Move

Stretching and moving your body at home is a simple yet powerful way to release tension and boost your energy. After sitting, working, or being on your feet all day, gentle stretches combined with small movements can ease sore muscles and tension in the body. Focus on areas that feel stiff and add light movements like reaching, twisting, or walking around your space. By doing this, you gain a new appreciation for your body and everything it’s capable of. Even just a few minutes of stretching and moving can leave you feeling lighter, more flexible, and energized throughout the day.

Skincare

Skincare can be a grounding form of self-care when done intentionally. Instead of rushing through your routine, take time to apply your products to your skin and enjoy the process. This small ritual offers a moment of calm and helps you reconnect with yourself after a busy day. Skincare doesn’t have to be complicated or expensive to be effective; consistency and care matter more than products. Treating your skin gently can boost your confidence and help you feel refreshed. It’s a simple way to practice self-care regularly and mindfully right at home.

Clean One Space

Cleaning one small area of your home can have a surprisingly positive impact on your mindset. Instead of tackling everything at once, focus on a single space like your nightstand, desk, or kitchen counter. Clearing clutter helps create a sense of order and calm, making your home feel more manageable. This small win can also boost motivation without feeling overwhelming. A tidy space often leads to a clearer mind, helping you relax more easily.

Do Something Creative

Creativity is a powerful form of self-care that allows you to express yourself without pressure. Whether it’s drawing, writing, crafting, baking, or journaling, the act of creating can be both relaxing and fulfilling. The goal isn’t to be perfect or productive; it’s to enjoy the process. Creative activities give your mind a break from stress and responsibilities and are a great alternative to being on your phone. Every type of creative activity can bring a sense of joy and accomplishment to your day.
