For Drs. Jake Bateman and Gray King, going into the dental field is a family tradition. “I’m a third-generation dentist,” says Dr. Bateman. “My grandfather and father were both dentists, and I had the honor of working alongside my father for 10 years. There were a lot of things that I admired about my dad, including how he was able to own his own business, help his patients, and also be a great mentor and very present in my life.”
With a wife and three young children, Dr. Bateman also wants to have that all-important work-life balance. “My career allows me to achieve goals professionally, while at the same time not miss those really precious family moments that you can’t get back and no amount of money can buy.”
Dr. King, who has a wife and two children, has a very similar story. “I’m a second-generation dentist—my mother is a cosmetic dentist in Atlanta, and my dad was the office manager for 16 or so years—and I grew up going to dental meetings and dental conferences all over the country. This allowed me to be exposed to a lot of different dentists and also appreciate that work-life balance and what it did for my family.”
He graduated from dental school two years ago and is starting his third year with Nashville Aesthetic Dentistry in Brentwood, while Dr. Bateman, who has been practicing since 2014, joined the practice three years ago.
This decision has allowed both cosmetic dentists to not only flourish in their careers, but also to learn from Dr. Dennis Wells, whom they say has instilled a standard of excellence in everything they do in the office.
One of these standards of excellence is giving every patient ample time to discuss goals and expectations. “We’re not here to see a certain number of patients,” says Dr. Bateman. “We’re not trying to load a schedule and bounce from room to room between patients. We view ourselves as specialists, and are hypervigilant and focused in order to give patients our absolute best and a standard that is very unique in the dental landscape.”
The practice focuses on creating natural-looking restorations. “Dr. Dennis Wells is one of the pioneers of prepless veneers, and in cosmetic dentistry in general,” says Dr. King. “To be able to learn from one of the greats is not something that many dentists around the country or even the world can say.”
Both dentists appreciate being part of a practice where they can collaborate with Dr. Wells and the other experienced and knowledgeable dentists in the office. “We’re surrounded by professionals who can guide us and who we can learn from,” says Dr. King. “I’m so grateful to be here.”
Dr. Bateman explains that no matter how intricate or complex a treatment might be, they will always find a solution that meets or exceeds their patient’s needs and expectations.
He loves being able to change people’s lives through cosmetic dentistry. One of his patients has enamel dysplasia, a genetic condition in which the enamel doesn’t form properly. “She’s a beautiful young girl and had some previous treatment that wasn’t done well, and her gums were really inflamed,” he says.
In this situation, it wasn’t only a cosmetic issue, but a health concern too. “We were able to not only improve the health of the gums and the bones underneath, but were able to give her a new smile. She thanks me every time she comes in for cleaning.”
Dr. King also gets a lot of satisfaction from improving patients’ smiles. One of his patients was a young man who was getting married soon and was deeply ashamed of his smile. “He often covered his mouth and didn’t openly smile. I met with him to talk through his goals and his timeline because we had to get everything done before the wedding.”
After the wedding, he showed Dr. King his wedding pictures, where he was smiling brighter than ever. “He was so happy that he almost started tearing up. That felt really good because not only had I made his smile great, but I had a bigger impact on his life. To be able to do that for someone is wonderful, and that’s what it’s all about.”
A great smile, says Dr. Bateman, can be powerful. “It’s how people show up not only for themselves every day, but for those around them. It increases confidence and opens up opportunities. That’s not something that we take lightly, and we love to be a part of patients’ stories so they can become the best version of themselves.”

ARTICLE BY MORGAN RAUM PHOTOGRAPHY PROVIDED
Grammy-Nominated Songwriter and Artist, Tim Timmons, Details His Inspiring Story And Message
Tim Timmons’ story is one defined by inspiration, hope, and resilience. Heavily involved in church and music programs growing up, the Southern California native graduated from college with dreams of pursuing a music career. Upon graduation, he married Hilary, his college sweetheart, and spent several years honing his craft, touring, and serving as a youth pastor. Everything was finally falling into place, until, at just twenty-five, he received the kind of news no one is ever prepared for: stage IV, inoperable cancer, with a prognosis of five years to live.

“So much changes in that moment... things become clear in a lot of ways,” Tim recalls on the news of his diagnosis. “I’m always saying that the gift of sorrow is sobriety—not necessarily alcohol or drug sobriety, but life sobriety. I have been addicted to worry my whole life, and yet, when you’ve got these moments of clarity or perspective or sobriety, you realize, ‘okay, maybe I don’t have to freak out about every little thing.’”
Timmons, who is now a father of four and twenty-five years past the year he was told he would never see, has shifted his mission to help inspire others to live each day to the fullest. This mindset has reflected every avenue of his life, as he decided to write songs that would help the world look more like Jesus in their daily lives. After a decade of making trips back and forth to Nashville, he signed his first major record deal with a Christian label in 2013 and relocated to Nashville.
Tim’s story was also an inspiration behind the movie, “I Can Only Imagine 2.” Filmed around the Nashville/Franklin area, the picture follows Bart Millard, lead singer of MercyMe, and Tim during his time opening for the band on tour. Watching his hardest days back on film was profound for both Tim and Hilary, who were played by Milo Ventimiglia and Arielle Kebbel.
“I laughed a lot, but then when I got to see some of my cancer journey, I would just sit there with those headphones on and ugly face cry,” Tim shares, on watching the filming of the movie. “For the first time, I got to see myself from outside of myself... that’s a really profound gift that not many people get to see.”
Tim and Hilary have continued to turn storms into flowers, co-writing their book, Waking Up Again: A Journey of Grief and Gratitude, to instill hope and encouragement in everyday life.
“[Our] hope with this book is [to] invite anybody who reads it to be more intentional about waking up every morning. Instead of just brushing our teeth, eating breakfast, going to work... what would it look like to wake up with more intentionality every single day? We told a bunch of our stories, our successes and failures [and hope], people will laugh a whole bunch, and also be really moved and encouraged,” Tim shares.
Each morning, Tim writes an ‘X’ on his wrist as a daily reminder to join Jesus. He started his nonprofit, 10,000 MINUTES, to further this message: If 80 minutes are spent in a weekly church gathering, that leaves 10,000 other minutes. What has your attention in the 10,000 minutes?

“What would it look like if we could wake up more intentionally every morning? If people find their own reason to remind themselves that they got another day, and if they join Jesus during their day? What could happen?” Tim questions.
Earlier this year, Tim released his own version of “Even If”—a ballad he co-wrote about his journey that was later recorded by MercyMe and went on to become a triple-platinum, Grammy-nominated hit. His latest release, “Wake Me Up Again,” is a glimpse of new music in the works. When he is not in the studio, Tim can often be found at Journey Church, where he leads as a Worship Pastor.

AN EXCERPT FROM EPISODE 6 OF SHARE THE LIFESTYLE, A CITY LIFESTYLE PODCAST
Photographer: Brittany Dawn Short
Creative Director: Jen Birn
Stylist: Stephanie Coultress O’Neill
Location: Hotel Saint Cecilia, Austin, TX
MIKE JOHNSON HAS BUILT HIS LIFE AROUND ONE QUIETLY RADICAL IDEA: THE STANDARD YOU SET PRIVATELY IS THE ONLY ONE THAT MATTERS.
After eight years in the Air Force, a celebrated run on national television, and a health crisis abroad that sent him deep into supply chains and ingredient certifications most founders never touch, the result is Oshun — a luxury ritual brand built on provenance you can trace and integrity you can verify. In an exclusive conversation for the Share the Lifestyle podcast, Mike shares what it actually takes to build something worth putting your name on. Read the highlights below, then scan the QR code for the full episode.
Q: YOU BECAME A FAN FAVORITE ON THE BACHELORETTE AND THEN LEFT THE SPOTLIGHT. YOU MOVED TO MEXICO, LEARNED SPANISH, THEN COSTA RICA, AND BUILT A COMPANY. WHAT DID THAT EXPERIENCE TEACH YOU ABOUT HUMAN BEHAVIOR?
A: “If you’re a good person going in, that shows. If you’re not, that shows too. I also learned that people form this parasocial relationship with you — they assume things about you. When in all actuality, different circumstances bring out different parts of who you are. I was on TV trying to find love. The kindness people were showing after felt a bit fake, because they wanted to be a part of something that isn’t who I am individually, but a part of what they saw on TV. And so I had to get away from everybody and everything and the noise.”

“Too many people have prayed for me. So I’ve got to get up and do the walking.”
— Mike Johnson

Q: YOU JOINED THE AIR FORCE RIGHT OUT OF COMMUNITY COLLEGE. WHAT WERE YOU ACTUALLY RUNNING TOWARD?
A: “There was something in me that was saying: I’m not living up to my full potential. I was being a follower. My uncle said, ‘What’s going to make you become an adult the fastest?’ I said, obviously, the military. The Air Force broadened my thought process more than anything. We’re so caught up in our own perception — when you learn to understand different people’s perspectives, it adds to you in so many ways.”
Q: WITH OSHUN, YOU OWN YOUR MANUFACTURING, YOU EMPLOY A CHEMIST, EVERY PRODUCT HAS A BATCH NUMBER TRACEABLE TO ITS ORIGIN DATE. WHY DID YOU DECIDE TO GO THAT DEEP WITH THE BRAND?
A: “The EU bans 1,100 ingredients in personal care products. The U.S. bans nine. That’s my starting point. Oftentimes, it might be the same ingredient, but it comes from a place where it doesn’t have the highest purity. And 60% of what we put on our skin is absorbed. Every product Oshun makes carries a batch number that goes back to the exact day it was created — I can show you every single supplier, the date, the origin. I own more than one part of the supply chain because that’s the only way I can stand behind what’s in the bottle.”
This conversation is just the beginning. Mike goes deeper into why he’s buying land up north, the family in the Philippines who prayed over his factory floor, and what he’d tell every person ready to stop performing and start building. ARTICLE BY SOPHIE BROCK PHOTOGRAPHY PROVIDED BY TENNESSEE WHISKEY TRAIL
The Tennessee Whiskey Trail's newest program turns a beloved spirit into a statewide culinary adventure.
Tennessee has long been synonymous with world-class whiskey, drawing spirit enthusiasts from across the country to wind their way through more than 700 miles of distillery-dotted landscape. But now, the Tennessee Whiskey Trail is raising a glass — and a fork — to something new.
Since March 31, the beloved statewide trail expanded beyond the barrel with a program that proves great Tennessee spirits deserve more than just a tumbler. Cork to Fork is Tennessee’s new statewide culinary trail bringing together distilleries and local eateries to create spirit-infused, chef-crafted dishes, inviting guests to have their whiskey and eat it too!
“We wanted to help create that seamless visitor journey to where you’re starting at a still, and you’re experiencing this Tennessee product being made and seeing it in its raw form,” says Charity Tombs, the executive director of the Tennessee Whiskey Trail. “Why don’t we create an experience that once you leave those doors, you can actually continue that whiskey-forward journey with chef-driven cuisine?”
With more than 40 culinary partners participating statewide at launch, Cork to Fork offers something for every palate, giving both tourists and locals a fresh way to enjoy their favorite spirits or dishes. Trail-goers are encouraged to register for a Cork to Fork digital passport, which helps them locate partners near distillery stops, map routes, browse cuisine, and track their progress along
the way. Participating restaurants make it easy to spot Cork to Fork offerings on their menus with a designated whiskey glass icon.
“I also put myself through the lens of when I’m a visitor in a destination,” Charity says. “We want to immerse ourselves in what makes that destination unique. This program highlights that you’re getting a chef-driven concept every meal, curated, but you’re also getting a taste of Tennessee’s manufacturing spirit in this one dish. It’s just a very fun and easy way to experience a hyperlocal element of Tennessee.”
Each participating restaurant has poured the same level of craft into its kitchen as Tennessee distillers put into their barrels. The result is a menu landscape as diverse as the state itself, spanning breakfast, lunch, dinner, appetizers, and desserts, with no two dishes quite alike. Every chef brings their own signature twist, whether that’s Nashville’s Urban Grub featuring Calabrian Bourbon Wood-Fired Oysters crafted with local Borchetta Red Corn Reserve Bourbon, or the Kooky Canuck in Memphis serving Maple Bread Pudding made with Old Dominick Distillery Cask Strength Whiskey. The spirit isn’t just an ingredient here; it’s the inspiration.
“I’ve been wowed about the menu creativity,” Charity says. “I really didn’t know what to expect with the chefs, but I have loved the fact that I have seen them truly use the spirit in relation to how the item is being cooked or prepared.”

“This is an experience that I think is as important to locals as it is to visitors.”

Middle Tennessee locals don’t have to venture far to get in on the action, the trail has a strong presence right in their own backyard. From ice cream spiked with Tennessee spirits at Hattie Jane’s Creamery to craft-forward bites at The Butter Milk Ranch, The Coffee House Franklin and TENN & Bar at Holston House, the region’s participants prove that Cork to Fork isn’t just culinarily ambitious, it’s visually stunning too. These aren’t just dishes; they’re plated experiences designed to stop you in your tracks.
“Food is such a visual medium, and I think they’ve done just a great example of being thoughtful about the toppings,” Charity says. “Food is art, but then even more so, I think the art part of this is just the creativity and how they’ve used it, and it’s beautiful in a way, I’m blown away. I love it.”
Looking ahead, Cork to Fork is only getting started. The program is expected to expand with new distillery and restaurant partnerships, along with seasonal menu rotations that keep the experience fresh every visit. But Cork to Fork isn’t just a

trail for out-of-town visitors checking off stops on a map — it’s an ongoing invitation for Tennesseans to rediscover their own backyard, one spirit-infused dish at a time.
“This is an experience that I think is as important to locals as it is to visitors,” Charity says. “It’s a way to have an experience within your own community.”
Whether you’re a seasoned trail-goer or just getting started, there’s never been a better time to explore. For more information, to browse participating restaurants, or to sign up and receive your digital passport, visit their website and start planning your Cork to Fork experience today.

THE SOUTHERN OAK WEALTH GROUP APPROACH TO BUILDING LASTING WEALTH

Managing Director, Senior Portfolio Manager
For Patrick, co-founder of Southern Oak Wealth Group, wealth advising has always been about more than numbers on a balance sheet. It’s about relationships, trust, and helping families make thoughtful decisions that shape their futures for generations to come.
Patrick helped establish Southern Oak Wealth Group with a clear vision: to serve clients without the constraints that often come with large corporate financial institutions. He wanted the freedom to guide families without product pressure or competing priorities, allowing him to focus on what truly matters—long-term relationships and meaningful financial stewardship.
“We wanted the flexibility to serve families the way they deserve,” Patrick says. “Wealth advising is about being a trusted resource for every financial question, through every season of life.”
Over the years, Patrick’s perspective on investing has evolved beyond simply managing portfolios. While disciplined equity investing remains a cornerstone of his strategy, he believes investments are only one piece of a much larger financial picture. Today, his work integrates portfolio strategy with
tax planning, estate structures, liquidity events, and generational wealth transfer—creating a comprehensive approach that connects every aspect of a client’s financial life.
One of the most important lessons Patrick has learned throughout his career is that true financial success begins with purpose. When families clearly understand what their wealth is meant to accomplish—whether supporting future generations, philanthropy, or personal goals—financial decisions become far more intentional.
Risk management also plays a central role in Patrick’s philosophy. Rather than viewing risk solely as market volatility, he encourages clients to think about it in terms of long-term outcomes. The real risk, he explains, is failing to achieve the goals that matter most. By structuring strategies that can weather market fluctuations while still capturing growth, he helps clients remain confident even during uncertain markets.
Patrick’s approach with clients begins with listening. Understanding family dynamics, business interests, financial concerns, and personal aspirations allows him to build strategies that truly reflect each client’s priorities. Education is equally important—he believes informed clients are empowered clients. He also takes pride in guiding younger generations, helping them build a strong financial foundation early in life.
While industry recognition is always appreciated, Patrick says it ultimately reinforces his responsibility to serve clients with excellence.
Outside the office, Patrick recharges by spending time with family, staying active, and maintaining close friendships—some of which began right inside the Southern Oak office. For him, those relationships are a reminder that the most meaningful investments in life are often the personal ones.

Managing Director, Senior Wealth Advisor
For Ann Young, partner at Southern Oak Wealth Group, financial advising is about far more than managing assets. It’s about empowering people—especially women—to feel confident, informed, and in control of their financial futures.
Early in her own career, Ann remembers feeling that finance could be an intimidating subject, particularly for young women. But she also recognized how important it was to develop a strong understanding of money and how it shapes long-term life decisions. Today, that early perspective fuels her passion for helping others feel comfortable navigating their financial lives.
Ann is particularly driven by the opportunity to support women in a field historically dominated by men. In many households, financial roles have traditionally defaulted to husbands, but that landscape is rapidly changing. Women are projected to control nearly half of the financial assets in the United States by 2030—driven by rising earnings, entrepreneurship, and longer lifespans.
“That shift matters deeply to me,” Ann says. “Many women feel intimidated by finance simply because it hasn’t always been explained in a clear, approachable way.”
Her solution is simple: education and transparency. Ann prioritizes walking clients through the “why” and “how” behind every financial decision so they feel empowered rather than overwhelmed. Her goal is to build lasting confidence so clients feel secure managing their wealth at every stage of life.
That personal approach defines her relationships with clients. Ann believes wealth management is about much more than numbers—it’s about understanding goals, values, family dynamics, and the life someone hopes to build. By learning what matters most to each client and what’s happening in their lives today, she can anticipate needs, uncover opportunities, and design strategies that align financial resources with the bigger picture.
Life transitions are a key focus of her work. Whether clients are navigating retirement, divorce, or family changes, Ann emphasizes the importance of having a thoughtful financial plan in place before those moments arrive. While transitions can bring uncertainty, a clear and forward-looking strategy provides stability and peace of mind.
Ann’s background in economics and her designation as a Certified Divorce Financial Analyst (CDFA) also influence how she approaches complex financial situations. Still, she believes the strength of Southern Oak lies in collaboration. Alongside her two partners, she works as part of a team that combines diverse perspectives to find the best solutions for clients.
Outside of work, Ann’s greatest passion is motherhood. With a six-year-old daughter and a three-year-old daughter, she is intentional about making sure they know they are the most important part of her life.
A lifelong Middle Tennessee native, Ann also treasures raising her daughters close to family. From time spent with grandparents and cousins to summers on Center Hill Lake and cheering on the Vanderbilt Commodores, she enjoys watching her children experience the same traditions she loved growing up.

Managing Director, Senior Wealth Advisor
In Nashville’s thriving business and entrepreneurial community, financial strategy requires more than simply managing investments; it demands thoughtful planning that considers every piece of a client’s life. For Jonathan Trusty, Managing Director and Senior Wealth Advisor at Southern Oak Wealth Group, that holistic perspective is central to how he serves clients across Middle Tennessee.
Based in Brentwood, Southern Oak Wealth Group was founded with the idea that wealth management should be more comprehensive than traditional investment advice. The firm works closely with families, corporate executives, and business owners to align investments, retirement planning, business strategy, and legacy goals into one integrated financial plan.
Trusty’s path to wealth management began in banking, where he started his career in 2007 working in lending and underwriting. That early experience gave him deep insight into both personal and business finance, an expertise that continues to shape his advisory work today. In 2012, he partnered with colleagues to form what is now Southern Oak Wealth Group, building a firm
focused on long-term relationships and personalized financial strategies.
Today, Trusty specializes in helping executives and business owners navigate complex financial decisions, including retirement planning, debt management, and long-term wealth strategy. His background allows him to design highly tailored financial solutions for clients whose financial lives often involve both personal assets and business interests.
A graduate of the University of Tennessee, Trusty lives in Brentwood with his wife, Stephanie, and their two sons. Outside the office, he enjoys spending time with his family at Center Hill Lake and skiing across the United States—experiences that reflect the same balance between professional success and personal fulfillment that he encourages his clients to pursue.
For Trusty, wealth management ultimately comes down to relationships. By understanding each client’s goals, values, and vision for the future, he helps families build financial strategies designed for lasting confidence and peace of mind, not just growth.

When business partners George Sudderth and Mark Summerville founded GLS Supply in Birmingham, Alabama, in 2001, they had a combined 60 years of experience in the plumbing supply industry. Back then, its customer base consisted mainly of local plumbers.
Today, there are additional locations in Huntsville and Cullman, all serving as trusted resources for homeowners, plumbing professionals, builders, and interior designers. Its showrooms display a large selection of the most trusted and sought-after kitchen and bath fixtures for every type of project, whether commercial or residential.
George and Mark still have a hand in the business, and their family members oversee the day-to-day operations, making it a true family-owned-and-operated company. George’s daughter, Kelly Easley, is the payroll manager and handles employee benefits, payroll, and accounting, and his daughter, Lisa Hall, handles all the marketing details, including social media and the website. Her husband, Joseph Hall, is one of the outside salesmen.

Two of Mark’s sons are also involved. Kyle is the branch manager of the Birmingham store; he and Kelly will share responsibility for managing GLS Supply as a whole. Ryan is the branch manager of the Huntsville location, while his wife, Savannah, is the office manager. George’s brother, Sam, is the branch manager and a partner in the Cullman location.
Since opening its doors 25 years ago, one thing has stayed the same: its sole focus on serving both professionals and homeowners with high-quality plumbing supplies. “We don’t carry lighting, cabinets, countertops, or appliances,” says showroom director Michelle Jackson. “We want to do one thing—plumbing—and be the best in the business for that one thing.”
“We make sure that our staff is educated because we want people to be happy with the products they’re buying,” she says. “We send them to the manufacturers for training. They get to go through the plants and see how things are made. This has led to an expertise that the big box stores cannot match.”

When customers come in, they’re not on their own. The staff has the knowledge to help them choose the right products for their needs to create their vision, whether that includes kitchen sinks, touch faucets, instant hot faucets, freestanding tubs, or bidet toilets.
Customers love the option to come into the showrooms and handle the products for themselves, something that cannot be done online. “It’s difficult to buy something that you’re investing in without seeing and touching it, and that’s the purpose of showrooms.”
She adds, “We have lots of freestanding bathtubs on display, because people want to get in them and see how they’re going to feel.” Some customers may be searching for a soaking tub, while others may have a skin condition or aches and pains that need water therapy. Its staff can recommend the right tub for any condition.
“One of our jobs is to ask customers how they want to use the product and what benefits they’re looking to get out of the product, so that we know what to recommend. There are tubs that pump oxygen into the water to help with skin issues.”
There’s one tub called the Marquis by Hydro Systems that they keep on display in all locations. “It’s one of the most comfortable tubs because it has a lumbar support,” says Michelle. “Once people get into this tub, nothing else is going to compare.”
Large walk-in showers with extra features, such as rainheads and body sprays, are very popular, but customers often focus on the big picture rather than those
May 2001: George Sudderth and Mark Summerville open GLS Supply at the corner of Richard Arrington Jr. Blvd N (old 10th Ave N) in Birmingham, Alabama. August 2009: The Huntsville location opens, boasting one of the largest inventories in the Huntsville-Athens-Madison-Decatur area.

all-important details. “You can create the most wonderful shower, but if you don’t have sufficient hot water, it’s not going to work the way it is expected,” she says. “We always try to suggest a tankless water heater and make sure we size it properly for the fixtures that they have in the house.”
Customers appreciate this guidance. Otherwise, they might end up with a product that doesn’t work in their home the way they want, leading to major disappointment and a delay in using it.
Many people have been coming in for years, and the relationships with their customers and manufacturers are another reason for the business’s long-term success. “We have helped customers build their dream houses on Smith Lake, or fix problems with their existing houses,” says Michelle. “We also help customers who want to prepare their homes to sell.”
GLS Supply attracts many custom home builders to its showrooms because it offers the luxury products their clients expect at competitive prices. Some of the most popular and high-end brands include Waterstone™ Kitchen & Bath, House of Rohl®, TOTO, Brizo, Newport Brass, Franke, MTI Bath Products, Hydro Systems, Lacava, and Colonial Bronze.
“The high-end products aren’t for everyone, but we can provide anything and everything for every customer budget,” she says.
When contemplating your next kitchen and bath project, stop into one of their showrooms for advice and products to help you create a space that you will love for many years to come.

Imagine being released from prison in the middle of the night with little more than the clothes you’re wearing-no money, limited resources, but a real desire to build a different future. You paid your dues, you’ve apologized, and you’ve changed your ways. You want to move onto a more positive path. But what if you could not find any opportunities to make a living or to find housing? What if you were turned down at each door? Employment and housing are necessary parts of life, but many in our community do not have access to them.

One such man was connected with employment and housing through the nonprofit, Project Return. Based in Nashville and Chattanooga, Project Return works with men and women who have been incarcerated and released to help them find their footing afterward.
They work with all facilities across the state, speaking at prisons and raising awareness by word of mouth.
This same gentleman, although shy and reserved at first, was skeptical about the help he would receive, but upon using the organization’s resources, he was able to find employment in landscaping and lawn care, quickly moving up the career ladder to become a crew leader.
When offered another job as a handyman for a major health care corporation, he was nervous, but he rose to the occasion and was given permanent employment within the company. He now has a stable footing with his own bank account, job benefits, housing, and retirement plan. All things he thought he could never obtain.
Because of the opportunities that Project Return offers to those post-incarceration, program participants gain access to support and pathways that can be difficult to navigate alone.
The program has a 75% employment rate among eager, motivated participants. Access to employment can be the beginning of a new and successful life outside of prison. However, there can be a stigma when it comes to hiring those with a convicted history, making it difficult for some. How can the formerly incarcerated live a full life if they are never given a chance to succeed? Statistics state that 70% are unemployed for their first year outside of incarceration.
It's great to find a job, but you must be equipped for the role. Not only does Project Return offer employment opportunities, they also builds the skills needed for those jobs and provides support to keep their jobs. In practice, this work looks like more than just job placement. Project Return operates a staffing model that delivers motivated, job-ready employees to local employers while providing transportation to and from work, as well as the clothing, tools, and support individuals need to succeed. Ongoing coaching ensures both participants and employers are supported for long-term success.
“Project Return guarantees every participant who completes a three-day job readiness course access to full-time employment through our social enterprises,” the nonprofit website states. “Once participants find full-time positions, Project Return continues working with them for a year to

ensure they have the support they need to grow in their careers.”
Through the PRO Housing program, the nonprofit provides stable housing for individuals who might be excluded from renting or buying. The nonprofit buys, rehabilitates, and provides permanent rental housing, making it an affordable option.
If you like their cause, one of the nonprofit’s needs is for career opportunities and employers. Employers and businesses can reach out to provide job placement via Project Return’s website.
Since its beginning in 1979, the nonprofit has helped thousands of individuals live a full and free life after incarceration. The founders, Reverends Bill Barnes and Don Beisswenger, saw the need and obstacles faced by those released back into society. It is not an easy feat to transition. The caring men aimed to establish a lasting way to help that continues to grow to this day, aiming to lower recidivism and create a prosperous, successful future for many.

Genre-Blending, Grammy-Award Winning Artist TobyMac Reflects On His Rise to Fame and The Journey That Helped Shape His Sound.
ARTICLE BY MORGAN RAUM PHOTOGRAPHY PROVIDED
Toby McKeehan—also known as TobyMac—has made a name for himself beyond the Christian genre. With a stylistic voice that blends rhythm and soul alongside lyrics that are equally as relatable as they are honest, the Grammy Award-winning artist continues to push creative boundaries while staying rooted in his faith and message.
by Robby Klein

“Writing songs is a forever thing, and it always will be. Writing songs is my passion.”
The Virginia native first found his voice in high school, balancing the precision of singing vocals in a quartet and octet with the creativity of being in a garage band with his friends. While a career in music wasn’t always at the forefront, he became more serious about pursuing it professionally while attending Liberty University in Virginia. During his studies, he formed a Christian rap and rock trio called DC Talk with two of his friends, Michael Tait and Kevin Max.
“I’m a songwriter first and then an artist. I always say, ‘I’m a songwriter disguised as a pop artist,’” TobyMac explains. “Writing songs is a forever thing, and it always will be. Writing songs is my passion.”
By 1994, Toby had married his college sweetheart, Amanda, moved to Nashville, and created his own record label—Gotee Records—with his cousin to help
other artists grow in their craft. While it was never his intention to pursue a solo career, Toby received a call about an upcoming film where they wanted him to write and perform a song for its soundtrack—as a solo artist. While hesitant at first, he wrote “Extreme Days” for the film, which became a pivotal Grammynominated track on his debut record Momentum… and the rest was history.
Over the past 25 years, TobyMac has taken the music industry by storm—with 7 Grammy Awards, over 18 GMA Dove Awards, and multiple Billboard Music Awards, the trailblazing artist enjoys writing from personal experiences. Finding comfort and inspiration in the idea that a lot of humanity faces the same trials emotionally, TobyMac has made it his goal to serve others through his music. He stays inspired

by two rules he set for himself when writing and producing a new record: not relying on what’s worked in the past and not fearing what didn’t work in the past.
“I’ve always tried to evolve in music… I think if you become one thing and [stay] there, it will just die in your heart and won’t be inspiring anymore,” he says. “I think as we evolve, we remain inspired as artists, singers, and musicians.”
Allowing both the good and bad to shine through his work, Toby is no stranger to painful loss. In 2019, he lost his son Truett—who was only 21 years old. This heartbreak impacted every avenue of his life and reflected in his music. Striving to write deeper, more passionate lyrics, the father of five became even more intentional with the words he was writing and the messages he was sharing.
“It caused me to filter my thoughts to a greater degree and make sure I’m sincere about everything I’m saying,” he shares, on writing songs about heartache. “[I made sure I was] treating people who are listening with love and respect and hoping that somehow, someway God could use a song as medicine for people and their hearts. I remember for a while, after I lost Truett, I didn’t think I could ever write another happy or hopeful song, [but] I’ve been able to slide by with a few, because they’ve all been about the goodness of God.”
Last year, TobyMac released his 10th studio album, Heaven On My Mind, where the title track landed him his eighth No. 1 song in a row on CCM Radio. Shifting from the overall themes of grief in his previous 2021 record, Life After Death, his newest stream of music sheds light on hope and healing after loss.
“I feel, you know, as you walk through things in life, you discover that you’re willing to share where you’ve failed or where you’ve been victorious, as long as you’re willing to be vulnerable. I think people like that—they are drawn to vulnerability,” he explains. “I’m also in a very grateful season—grateful for the people around me, for what I have in my

“I hope people feel through my music that we should treat each other with dignity. Everyone deserves that,” he says.

family, for what I have in my wife, and that I [get to be] out doing something I love.”
Residing in Franklin, TobyMac has built a life and career based on hard work, perseverance, and inspiration. Widely known for his humility and grounded approach that leads beyond music, at the end of the day, he just wants his work to resonate with others and inspire anyone who listens.
“I hope people feel through my music that we should treat each other with dignity.
Everyone deserves that,” he says. “Walking humbly, loving the people around you and in your community, and reminding them of God’s love for them, are [a few] things I hope come out in my music.”

SKINCARE EXPERT CHRISTOPHER PANZICA BREAKS DOWN WHY MEN'S SKIN DESERVES MORE LOVE AND EXACTLY WHERE TO START.

For years, a bar of soap and some SPF on a good day was the extent of most men's skincare routines. As self-care has shed its stigma and wellness has become part of everyday life, men have begun paying real attention to their skin, and the results speak for themselves. The question is no longer if men should have a skincare routine, but what that routine should actually look like.
“The biggest hurdle with men is usually just getting them to think about skincare in the first place,” says Christopher Panzica, Licensed Esthetician and SVP of Marketing and Product Development at Hydrinity. “For a long time, it simply was not part of the conversation. That is definitely changing; more men are starting to see the value, they just do not want it to feel complicated or time-consuming.”
With a decade in aesthetics and a background in Fortune 500 marketing, Chris brings a rare dual perspective to skincare. As a licensed esthetician, he founded and ran two successful med spas in Brentwood and Franklin before moving to the brand side, where he's helped scale one of the fastest-growing professional skincare companies in the US to more than 4,500 practices across 40+ countries. His work spans marketing, product development, and creating award-winning clinical formulas, but what sets him apart is simple: he's been in the treatment room and behind the brand, and he knows what actually works for skin.
Growing up, Chris says he always struggled with his skin. Dealing with it firsthand made him deadset on finding a solution, allowing that trial-and-error phase to give him an appreciation for both the science and emotional side of skincare.
“Over time, that personal frustration turned into curiosity,” Chris says. “I started paying closer attention to ingredients, formulations, and why certain products worked better than others. It became less about just fixing my own skin and more about understanding how to approach skin health in a smarter, more effective way. That mindset is really what pushed me toward aesthetics. When I had the opportunity to step into aesthetics professionally, it felt like a natural extension of that journey. I was excited to combine what I had learned personally with the innovation happening in skincare to help others navigate the same challenges. There is something really rewarding about simplifying the process for people and helping them feel more confident in their own skin.”
“A lot of times, the men assume it must be complicated because they see an eight-step routine from a significant other or a friend and think that is what it takes to get results,” Chris says. “That perception alone can be enough to keep them from even starting. They do not realize that a little effort, done consistently and with the right products, can go a very long way. Once I show them that they can get real results with just a few targeted products, it starts to

“THERE IS SOMETHING REALLY REWARDING ABOUT SIMPLIFYING THE PROCESS FOR PEOPLE AND HELPING THEM FEEL MORE CONFIDENT IN THEIR OWN SKIN.”
click. When they realize it can be simple, efficient, and make a noticeable difference, that is when they buy in. It becomes less of a chore and more of a smart, low-effort habit that fits into their daily routine.”
Now, he channels that experience into helping others navigate the same process. Through his work at Hydrinity, Chris has focused on developing advanced, results-driven formulas built around simplicity, because simplicity, for most men, is the biggest barrier to starting a skincare routine: time, cost, and confusion. The goal, he says, has always been to remove those obstacles and make effective skin health feel achievable while seamlessly blending into an everyday lifestyle.
For a simple but effective routine, Chris recommends a quality cleanser, a vitamin C, a good moisturizer, and a daily SPF to help protect against environmental stressors, support hydration, and prevent premature aging. For those wanting to take it a step further, adding a retinoid product can help improve skin texture, tone, and overall appearance, and Chris notes that consistency is key rather than complexity.

As for professional treatments for men, there’s been a shift where treatments such as injectables, both toxin and filler, have become much more normalized alongside other treatments such as lasers, chemical peels, and microneedling. These options can deliver meaningful results without looking overdone.
“Most men do not really pay attention to their skin until they start to see visible signs of aging,” Chris says. “That is usually the trigger. Things like fine lines around the eyes, forehead wrinkles, loss of firmness, or an overall dullness and uneven texture are the things that get their attention. There is often a realization of waking up one day, looking in the mirror, and wondering, ‘when did this happen?’ It can feel like it showed up overnight. In reality, it has been building over time, but that first noticeable shift is what brings them in. It is less about perfection and more about wanting to look like a more refreshed version of themselves.”
Outside of skincare, self-care habits play a bigger role in how your skin looks and ages than most people realize. Sun exposure, hydration, diet, and sleep are all major factors,
and while they may seem small day to day, they compound significantly over time. Unprotected sun exposure, excess sugar, and alcohol can accelerate aging and drive inflammation, while drinking enough water and eating with your skin in mind can make a visible difference. Above all, Chris points to sleep as the most underrated habit of all. Poor sleep raises cortisol levels, increases inflammation, and speeds up visible aging, while quality rest is when the skin does most of its repair, with research suggesting it can regenerate up to 60 percent faster overnight. “Sleep is one of those habits where the impact goes even far beyond skin and appearance, it improves how you feel, how you perform, and how you show up day to day,” Chris points out.
At the end of the day, great skin is not about vanity; it is about showing up as the best version of yourself. Whether it starts with swapping out your body wash for a real cleanser or finally booking that appointment you have been putting off, the bar for entry is lower than most men think. As Chris puts it, a little effort, done consistently, goes a long way. The hardest part is simply getting started.

BY EVE BUSHMAN
In speaking to Whiskey lovers (most happen to be men, but do accept me in their brethren as a fellow enthusiast, writer, and educator), I’ve learned a great many opinions on how to drink Whiskey. Specifically, preferences on adding water and ice vary greatly.
A brand ambassador that I had the privilege of listening to recently said the obvious: both dilution and temperature change when you add ice, so if you are going to add something, a little water is best. I personally prefer to use a water dropper, so I can add one drop at a time until I get to the desired taste.
THE BEST WAY TO ENJOY YOUR WHISKEY: ON THE ROCKS, ROCK, NEAT, OR WITH WATER

HERE ARE THE DIFFERENCES:
Rocks: Provides the highest rate of dilution as a lot of ice melts quickly. If you are drinking a barrel proof Whiskey, it kind of defeats the purpose as the distiller didn’t add water as they do in every other type of finished Whiskey.
On the Rock: The single rock, cube, or sphere is the slowest to melt and thought to be the most aesthetic. It’s nice if you want to stretch out your tasting. I often order on the rock if I want my drink to last longer.
Neat: This is the way single malt Scotch is served at a tasting event, in a branded Glencairn or Neat glass so that proper nosing for aromas can be achieved - and a dram of Scotch, smaller than an ounce, fits in them perfectly.
Water: As I mentioned above, quoting the brand ambassador, a little water is better for a fine Whiskey over any kind of ice. Often, if ordered with water, the water is served in a separate vessel on the side so you can add in as much as you want.
Quoting another expert on the subject, Richard Paterson of The Dalmore famously and enthusiastically demonstrates in his Scotch classes how to drink single malt Scotch Whiskey: Paterson fills a lowball glass to the rim with ice, adds Scotch and then ceremoniously throws it over his shoulder onto the carpet of the classroom – because that much ice makes the drink worthless. One more quote, never “add green tea or milk to Whiskey. You can add a little water, but not a lot of ice.”
Ultimately, the reason we add ice can be for aesthetics, to stretch out the time spent on one glass, for cooling, and for dilution. However, the number one reason enthusiasts add water is … drumroll please … because adding a little water actually opens up a Whiskey to show more aromas and flavors.

PICKLE-BRINED CHICKEN WINGS SOAR TO THE NEXT LEVEL WITH ALABAMA WHITE SAUCE.
I’ve spent years searching for the perfect wing flavor, never quite satisfied, until I heard a podcast suggestion: brining chicken wings in pickle juice. It sounded strange at first, but it yields incredibly tender and flavorful wings! Since then, I save pickle juice from every jar I buy just to recreate these beloved wings. If I run out of pickle juice, olive juice works too. I air fry mine, but if you don’t have an air fryer, cook them as you normally would. Don’t forget to toss them in a buttery dill sauce and try the Alabama white BBQ sauce for an extra layer of goodness!
• 2 pounds chicken wings (flats and drumettes)
• Pickle juice - enough to cover wings
• 1 – 2 teaspoons garlic salt
• ¼ teaspoon pepper
• 6 tablespoons butter
• A few dashes of hot sauce
• 2 tablespoons fresh dill, chopped
1. Place chicken wings in a non-reactive container and pour pickle juice over chicken wings until completely covered.
2. Place it in the fridge and let it marinate, covered, for at least 8 hours.
3. Drain wings, discard pickle juice, and completely pat wings dry.
4. Put dried wings in a bowl and sprinkle with garlic salt and pepper. Mix well.
5. Place wings in an air fryer basket, being careful not to crowd. Cook at 400 degrees for 28 minutes, turning every 8 minutes until crispy. If you don’t have an air fryer, bake them in the oven for 35 - 40 minutes at 400 degrees, flipping halfway through.
6. Melt the butter and add a few splashes of hot sauce of your choice and mix in a bowl. Add wings and completely cover with butter mixture. Sprinkle with fresh dill and toss a few times, and serve with my white barbeque sauce.
INGREDIENTS
• 1 ½ cups mayonnaise (I prefer Duke’s)
• ¼ cup water
• ¼ cup white wine vinegar
• 1 tablespoon pepper, coarsely ground
• 1 tablespoon Creole mustard
• 1 teaspoon salt
• 1 teaspoon sugar
• 2 garlic cloves, minced
• 2 teaspoons prepared horseradish
INSTRUCTIONS
Whisk all ingredients together until blended. Dip your pickle juicebrined wings in this sauce and taste the joy! Store in the refrigerator for 1 - 2 weeks.

There’s no other tournament on the PGA Tour like the Waste Management Phoenix Open and no hole like the legendary 16th, where 20,000 boisterous fans boo the tee shots that miss the green. The other 51 weeks of the year, golfers can play TPC Scottsdale or try one of more than 200 courses in the Scottsdale area, a top golf destination. Another winter event is the BarrettJackson Collector Car Auction. Even if one’s only collector car was a Hot Wheels, it’s a blast to peruse the acres of autos for sale before heading inside to watch the unique or renowned cars crossing the auction block. When it’s time to get moving, the strenuous hike up Camelback Mountain in nearby Phoenix

It’s always a party in New Orleans (NOLA), especially when it comes to festivals, many of them centered around music. Folk to funk, gospel to jazz, zydeco, blues, African and other musical styles are celebrated on the Jazz and Heritage Festival’s 12 stages. If free admission is more desired, don’t miss the French Quarter Festival featuring local musicians and food vendors representing dozens of New Orleans restaurants. Part of the fun of Mid-City Bayou Boogaloo is admiring revelers’ watercraft, some of them homemade just for this festival on the banks of Bayou Saint John. If one of the festivals can’t be attended, there’s still plenty of NOLA live music, particularly the jazz clubs on Frenchmen Street. And when a break from crowds is needed, take a guided swamp tour.
