Because You Deserve Better Than “Just Deal With It” You’re not crazy. You’re not lazy. And you’re definitely not alone. LIFESTYLE LETTER

The Health & Wellness Issue The start of a new year is often filled with excitement and a sense of renewal. It’s a time to set new goals, embrace fresh opportunities, and dream about the year ahead. For many, though, January can also bring a sense of pressure—a reminder of resolutions left unfulfilled or the weight of expectations. This issue of Brentwood Lifestyle was crafted with the goal of offering something different: inspiration for long-term, sustainable improvements in physical, emotional, and mental health. Life isn’t about perfection; it’s about consistency. Whether it’s in business, health, or relationships, it’s not what you do occasionally that makes the difference—it’s what you do most of the time. Consider this: you wouldn’t go on vacation every day, but planning a couple of trips each year is a realistic and restorative goal. This year, focus on small, consistent actions that lead to a more balanced and fulfilling life. Join a fitness class, carve out moments for rest, and don’t forget to savor life’s pleasures. It’s the “most of the time” choices that shape our lives. Here’s to a healthy, happy new year—we’re rooting for you!

Windy Hill Park Now Open The City of Brentwood officially opened Windy Hill Park on Dec. 15th. This is the 15th park in Brentwood, and is a part of the Brentwood 2030 Plan. It is 52 acres, features a trail connected to Brentwood’s greenways, a 400-meter loop track, workout stations, picnic shelters, restrooms, and includes an airplane-themed playground as well as a mural of one of Sensing’s former planes, painted by artist Eric “Mobe” Bass.

Local Startup SOS Counter Expands From Facebook to First Storefront SOS Counter (formerly Sourdoughs of Somerset), a home-based business offering restaurant-quality meals exclusively through its infamous Facebook group, plans to open its first brick-and-mortar store this winter at 701 Cool Springs Blvd., thanks to the business’s wildly successful online presence and support of the “Breadwood” community. Founded by the husband-and-wife team of Michaella and Ryder Zetts, the storefront will offer fresh salads, healthy sandwiches, hot lunches, pastries by Jessica Chow, and, of course, sourdough loaves.

$15.8M Ragsdale Road Widening Project The Brentwood City Commission approved a $15.8 million Ragsdale Road widening project with the expectation of being completed by April 28, 2027. There were four bids on this project, and it ended up being awarded to Cleary Construction. The widening plan will include three lanes with an occasional median with a multi-use, 10-foot-wide trail on one side of the road and a sidewalk on the other side.

WHERE RESILIENCE Meets Paradise

BLUEFIELDS BAY VILLAS REOPENS WITH COMMUNITY AT ITS CORE ARTICLE BY SOPHIE BROCK PHOTOGRAPHY PROVIDED BY BLUEFIELDS BAY VILLAS & SUITES

M UST SE E | TRAVEL

A new year brings the perfect excuse to discover a new corner of the world, especially one as breathtaking as Jamaica’s South Coast. Tucked along its tranquil shoreline, Bluefields Bay Villas & Suites has long been a cherished part of the community, not only offering a luxury escape to paradise for its guests but also giving back to the island itself. After sustaining significant damage during Hurricane Melissa in October, the beloved resort is now ready to welcome guests once again, reopening this month with renewed purpose and resilience. Owners Debbie and Braxton Moncure built Bluefields Bay from the ground up, creating a world-class retreat deeply intertwined

with the local community, employing and partnering with locals for decades. Through their Bluefields Bay Villas Foundation, the resort has played a vital role in post-hurricane relief efforts, helping residents rebuild in the wake of the storm. Today, their son, Houston, and daughter-in-law, Kate, carry on this legacy, overseeing the resort’s day-to-day operations with Houston as the managing director, with the same commitment to service, sustainability, and community. “Bluefields Bay is a place that exists outside of reality,” Houston explains. “Time doesn’t matter, and the rest of the world just feels distant. disconnect and enjoy the natural beauty of the world that they are occupying.” From private villas to personalized concierge service, the Bluefields Bay experience is tailored to every guest, ensuring a truly luxurious escape no matter the occasion. Guests can look forward to all-inclusive gourmet food and beverages, indulgent in-villa spa treatments, a variety of watersports, and private pools. Plus, the added convenience of professional nannies available right in the villa. After Hurricane Melissa, the resort – along with many local businesses – closed for several months, dedicating that time not only to rebuilding its own property but also to supporting and helping restore the surrounding community. “This storm tested both the resort and our community, revealing some truly remarkable strengths in all of us,” Houston says. “We’ve been pushed to work harder than ever before, and in that process, we’ve discovered new creativity and a level of teamwork we didn’t know was possible. It reminded us just how resilient we are as individuals, as a team, and as a community. Everyone has stepped up for one another, and we’ve learned so much about each other along the way. As we prepare to reopen, there is an overwhelming sense of gratitude and excitement. It feels incredibly meaningful to welcome guests back and begin this new chapter together.” Long before the hurricane struck, the Bluefields Bay Villas Foundation was already deeply invested in uplifting the local community. Over the years, the foundation has strengthened infrastructure, equipped schoolchildren with essential resources, and provided meaningful support to the local fishing community. “The Bluefields Bay Villas Foundation was created to provide a structured way for the resort to give back to the community we’re a part of,” Houston says. “Two percent of every villa rental supports

the foundation, which has traditionally focused on environmental and educational projects. In the wake of the storm, its efforts have shifted entirely toward feeding local families, providing clothing, and helping with essential housing repairs.” Houston is thankful for all of the non-governmental organizations that rushed to help Jamaica in the hurricane aftermath. The resort is especially grateful to World Central Kitchen, who provided hot meals to the community. As Bluefields Bay opens its doors once again, the resort invites guests not just to experience its unmatched luxury but also to directly support a place that continues to rebuild with strength and resilience. Whether planning your next getaway or looking for meaningful ways to give back, Bluefields Bay stands as a reminder of what can emerge when a community – and those who care for it – come together.

WOMEN’S HEALTH

EMPOWERING

MAKING MIDLIFE ISSUES MANAGEABLE

“I’M REALLY EXCITED ABOUT WHAT I CAN DO TO HELP WOMEN WITH THEIR ISSUES.”

Women who are experiencing perimenopause or full-on menopause often have a difficult time finding someone in the medical field to listen to their issues and/or receive help with this challenging life transition. Kim Engelhardt understands this well. As the owner of The Aesthetic Loft in Brentwood, she often hears from her clients about their difficult midlife experiences. She’s also at an age where she can relate to what they’re going through. Kim knew that she and her clients were not getting the answers they were seeking, and she wanted to try to make a difference. So, in May of 2025, she founded EmpowHER Health, which offers personalized hormone and weight loss solutions for women 35 and over who are navigating perimenopause, menopause, and midlife changes. As a board-certified nurse practitioner, she has extensive experience in endocrinology, hormone health, and medical weight management. Kim is now a Menopause Society Certified Practitioner as well. “I’m really excited about what I can do to help women with their issues,” she says.

“IT’S LIKE A CONCIERGE MEDICAL PRACTICE WHERE I WOULD PRESCRIBE THEIR MEDICATIONS AND CONTINUE TO FOLLOW UP WITH THEM AS NEEDED.”

These may include sleep disturbances, fatigue, weight gain, lack of motivation, anxiety, and depression. Changes in sexual health are other factors. All appointments are conducted through telehealth, and before meeting with Kim, patients will undergo blood work. During the appointment, which is usually about 90 minutes, she performs a thorough intake. “I ask a lot of questions, and I’m mostly just listening. I then use everything I’ve heard, not just the lab results, to make clinical decisions about what's going to be the best and safest options for them.” If someone is a good candidate for hormone therapy, she will prescribe it. “For the past 20 years, we’ve been told to fear hormones, but that was based on a study that was done long ago, and the evidence was misinterpreted,” says Kim. For those with underlying medical issues, she can provide non-hormonal solutions. She also recommends locally applied estrogen, which she says can make a tremendous difference for women and their sexual health. “It’s a completely non-systemic form of estrogen, so it's not even absorbed into your body.” Kim’s patients have also had a lot of success with GLP-1 medications for weight loss. “They are so beneficial, especially for

32

H EA LT H Y LIF E ST Y LE | LOCAL SE RVICE S

women (and men) who are struggling with that midlife slowdown where the weight keeps creeping on no matter what you do,” she says. “It also decreases inflammation overall.” After she discusses all treatment options, she will formulate a plan of care. “If they are then interested in working with me to implement that plan, they would pay a small monthly fee,” says Kim. “It's like a concierge medical practice where I would prescribe their medications and continue to follow up with them as needed.” The feedback has been great. Patients of EmpowHER Health are dealing with fewer symptoms and feeling more like their former selves. Kim, who lives in Brentwood with her husband, three teenage sons, and dog Brody, is also feeling more like herself these days. “I feel much better,” she says. “It'll never be perfect, and that’s why I like to educate my patients and let them know that this is a journey.” A journey she and her patients are taking together. INSIDE NAVY DOOR STUDIO’S STRESS-FREE DESIGN PROCESS

Life moves fast, and the daily hustle can feel overwhelming. That’s why a home that offers comfort and calm is more important than ever. Navy Door Studio, in partnership with Decorating Den Interiors, specializes in transforming spaces into personalized retreats that reflect your style, ease your stress, and fit your budget.

A COMMITMENT TO YOUR BUDGET

“I never present options that exceed the budget my clients share,” says Julie Carpenter, owner of Navy Door Studio. “You can feel confident knowing you’ll never spend more than you planned.” This client-first philosophy, combined with Decorating Den Interiors’ streamlined process, eliminates hourly design fees and prevents unexpected costs. Once every item is ordered and inspected, Julie and her team complete the transformation in a single day—ending with a dramatic reveal that feels nothing short of magical.

A JOURNEY ROOTED IN DESIGN

Julie’s passion for design began in 2006, when she lent her creative eye to her husband’s construction business. Years later, with her children grown, she launched Navy Door Studio by Decorating Den Interiors. Her mission is simple: help families fall in love with their homes and ensure every detail reflects their lifestyle. “A well-designed home creates warmth and satisfaction,” Julie explains. “When you walk in and feel completely comfortable, it removes a layer of stress from your life. Our homes should be a refuge from the chaos.”

DESIGN THAT INSPIRES

Julie loves full-room transformations, especially those needing some construction first. These projects often present the biggest challenges—but also the greatest creative opportunities. And with Julie’s experience working in her husband’s business, you can be assured that the project will be done right. Looking ahead to 2026, expect rich, moody color palettes like deep maroon, dark green, and navy to dominate. Pair these hues with textured furniture for a fresh, modern look. For a budget-friendly update, Julie suggests adding pillows in bold colors or tactile fabrics. And remember, simple changes like fresh paint and updated lighting can completely redefine a space.

WHAT’S NEXT FOR NAVY DOOR STUDIO

The coming year is full of exciting plans, including Julie’s collaboration with Carpet Den Interiors. Last month, Julie started leading free decorating workshops every other month. It’s a great way for others to explore their own artistry while enjoying bites and bubbles.

HOW DON'T FORGET THE DUDES IS MAKING SPACE FOR MEN’S GRIEF AND HEALING ARTICLE BY SOPHIE BROCK | PHOTOGRAPHY BY JOSH DAUBIN

A RT IST ’S PA LE T T E | LO CAL SE RVICE S

When conversations about grief and loss arise, one group is too often overlooked: men. Burdened by long-standing stigmas and stereotypes, they’re frequently left out of the narrative, until Don’t Forget The Dudes stepped in. What began as a simple phrase within the nonprofit Faithfully Restored Women has grown into a compassionate community initiative that’s made a meaningful difference in the lives of countless men. At the heart of Faithfully Restored Women is the organization’s co-founder and executive director, Jamie Heard, who leads the nonprofit’s mission to offer hope, connection, and support, where they’re able to serve more than 2,500 women each year. Among those involved in the organization are Beth and Paul Frankenberg, whose commitment to uplifting others helped lay the foundation for what would eventually become Don’t Forget The Dudes. “Paul's always asked, "But what about the guys?" Jamie explains. “Anyone who has ever asked me that same question of: "Do you do anything for guys at Faithful Restored?" I always say, "No, we don't, but my friend Paul would like to." Another key member of the Don’t Forget The Dudes team is Michelle Warren, whose relationship with Faithfully Restored began during a season when she received the organization’s support. “About five years later, Michelle and I were having a conversation,” Jamie explains. “It came up the same way. Someone we were talking to asked, ‘Do you do anything (for the men)?’ I said, ‘Well, I have a friend who really wants to do something for the guys.’ So I connected Michelle and Paul. That’s when it took off, in the Lord’s perfect timing with the right people getting involved.” From there, Don’t Forget The Dudes was born, an idea brought to life by a selfless team united by the same purpose. Their mission is simple: to help men feel supported, seen, and reminded that they’re never alone in what they’re facing.

“Don’t Forget The Dudes completely started as a joke,” Beth recalls. “From the name up to the idea. It was almost as if it was talked into existence.” What began lightheartedly has since become a deeply impactful effort. Don’t Forget the Dudes officially launched in May 2025, making it a brand-new organization that is already creating meaningful change. While the team is grateful for the early impact they’ve had, they know their mission will only grow stronger with the community's support, often using the phrase “Here we grow” as the DFD community continues to expand. Today, the team not only supports men by sending handwritten notes and gift cards during difficult times – reminding them that they are not alone – but also creates a safe space for honest, vulnerable conversations about men’s mental health. Anyone who feels called to be part of this mission is welcome to get involved, whether by handwriting notes or reaching out to DFD to learn other ways to lend a hand. Michelle, a mom of three boys, has felt the weight of this mission personally. After losing one of her sons five years ago, she has worked tirelessly to support her boys through their grief. “As a mom, I would encourage them to share feelings, show their feelings, but again, it's the stigma of being a male,” she says. “They deserve acknowledgement of their pain.” On Dec. 8, the group gathered to handwrite notes, knowing that the holidays can be an especially difficult time when grief feels heaviest. Their acts of kindness never go unnoticed, and while the gesture alone is meaningful, they occasionally hear back from the men who receive these notes. One recipient of these notes was Joshua Collier, owner of Middle TN Christmas Lights. After losing his business partner of more than 30 years to Acute Myeloid Leukemia (AML) last January, Joshua and his wife stepped away from Middle Tennessee for a break to process the difficult season.

When they returned home, he found a handwritten letter from DFD in his mailbox, an unexpected gesture that moved him so deeply he reached out to the team by email. “Today, I began to dread sifting through the huge bag of mail,” Joshua wrote. “I came to an envelope with DFD on the letter; however, it was handwritten. I opened it, not understanding what was happening. Reading the handwritten message to me took my breath away. Who does this! I mean, we as a company gift holiday lights to homes of families that are having possibly their last Christmas with their loved one, or sick children, or whatever the case may be, but I never dreamed someone would send something like this, and so perfectly written. Whomever sent this or told you about my situation...I'm forever grateful. Thank you so much for this gift card, but mostly the message. God is faithful and close to the brokenhearted. I sincerely appreciate your company and would love to get involved in your mission in the future, if possible. Thank you again, so very much. God bless you and your company!” Both Don’t Forget the Dudes and Faithfully Restored operate out of The Foundry, a coworking space that houses several kingdom-minded non-profits – a fitting home for two organizations so committed to hope, healing, and community.

“I will beat the drum of gratefulness for Faithfully Restored as long as I'm alive,” Paul expresses. Without Faithfully Restored, Don’t Forget The Dudes I don’t think exists. High Quality Plus Artistic Craftsmanship Shower doors that look beautiful and stand the test of time

Steve Hood grew up working in the glass business. His father, Bob, owned a shower door/glass company in Michigan. Today, Steve is carrying on the tradition as the owner and founder of Shower Doors of Nashville and Shower Doors of Texas. “My brother actually owns Shower Doors of Charlotte, so it's in our family’s blood,” he says. “Plus, I have an entrepreneurial mindset, and I knew from a very young age that I wanted to own my own company. I'm very involved and have an amazing team here. My office manager, estimator, and general managers have been with me from the start, so about five years.” His team, says Steve, is one thing that separates his business from other companies and big box stores. “Every one of our employees is a salaried employee. There's no contract labor, and everything is done in-house.” Either he or his lead installer in Nashville has trained the team. “I learned that I can hire people with character and integrity and then teach them,” he says. “We have seven installers in Nashville, and all of them are experts at what they do.” Also, since he's sending people into clients’

homes, he has to fully trust them, so everyone has to undergo a background check. Every project is customized to meet a client’s specific needs. “I've always enjoyed the art of what we do and having somebody look at the finished project and say, ‘Wow, I love that.’ This is something in your house that you're going to touch every single day, and since the cost is fairly inexpensive for the product, why would you not want something that actually fits your opening perfectly?” When creating a custom frameless shower door, there's a lot of craftsmanship and detail that goes into it that most people don't think about. “We have to be extremely precise with our measurements,” he says. When it comes to custom-made, he likes to use the analogy of a suit. “I can go buy a suit off the rack, or I can have one tailored made. Which one looks better? The custom one, absolutely.” Steve often tells his employees that it’s not only the big things that matter, but also the little things that make them stand out from their competition. “Everything is the very best quality that I can get.”

“ I knew from a ver y young age that I wanted to own my own company.”

A lifetime warranty is provided for every project. “Our shower doors are going to outlast everything else in your bathroom,” he says. Steve and his team also stay on top of trends. They attend glass conferences and work with many designers, which allows them to see what’s coming. He’s very proud of the company’s 5.0 rating on Google, and believes that the outstanding customer service they provide is a

big part of that. Instead of gaining just one client, his goal is to have them rave about the process and the results to their neighbors, friends, and family. A lot of his business is word of mouth, and when someone trusts you enough to recommend you, that says a lot. In addition to custom shower doors, Steve and his team can also handle any add-on products clients may need while they’re CONTINUED > JANUARY 2 0 2 6 | C I TYL I FE STYL E . C OM/BR E N T WO O D

there, such as vanity mirrors or small cabinet glass. “We're doing about 95% shower doors, but we also do quite a bit of wine rooms, since a wine room is basically a shower without water.” Having family-owned and operated businesses also brings him a lot of satisfaction. His wife, Amber, helps with the accounting, and his two nephews work in the Texas location. The company is also very active in supporting veterans.

A Partnership Built on Purpose Dr. Christina Rahm & Clayton Thomas | The ROOT Brands What was happening in your life when the idea for the ROOT Brands first took shape? Christina: ROOT started with a problem I couldn’t ignore. It grew out of the work I’d been doing for years as a scientist and formulator. I was trying to protect my family, and my work kept showing me things that didn’t sit right. When ROOT officially launched just before the world shut down, it reinforced why this work mattered. I wasn’t looking to create products for the market. I was trying to get to the root of what wasn’t working and find solutions I could trust for my family. Clayton: When Christina and I came together, it was clear her work wasn’t theoretical. I’d spent years around the realities of this industry, and I could see she was solving real problems with a level of discipline I rarely see. That alignment is what made us realize there was an opportunity to build something meaningful together. How did your individual strengths shape what ROOT became? Christina: I focus on the science, the sourcing, and the responsibility that comes with formulating products people put in and on their bodies every day. From ingredient selection to patented purification processes, quality and oversight matter at every step. Clayton: My role is building the structure around Christina’s science so it can grow responsibly. That means navigating compliance, global systems, and long-term decisions that protect integrity as the company scales.

What sets ROOT apart in today’s wellness landscape? Christina: Control and accountability. We built our own manufacturing systems at Strata Biotech so we can oversee every step, from raw materials to finished product. With today’s level of environmental exposure, oversight isn’t optional. It’s a responsibility to protect what goes into the body, not just what goes on the label. Clayton: I’m married to a world-class patent scientist and nano-biotechnologist, so I have a front-row seat to the rigor behind these formulations. My responsibility is making sure that level of science can scale responsibly and still reach people where they are, without wellness feeling exclusive. This company has grown globally, but you’re based here in Franklin. How do you think about responsibility as ROOT continues to expand? Christina: My faith is at the center of everything I do. I believe we’re called to use our gifts wisely and in service of others. Science is a tool, but purpose is what guides it. ROOT was never just about making supplements. It was about using what I’ve been given to help people, care for the world around us, and leave things better than we found them. Being rooted here keeps that mission grounded and personal.

Nutrient-Rich Dessert To The Rescue ARTICLE BY MEL BOBAN

SWEETS The beginning of the year is packed with inspiration and motivation to get back on track after a sweet-filled holiday season. It can feel extreme, and it also can be depleting to cut oneself off from everything indulgent after weeks of eating favorite sweet and savory recipes. For sugar lovers who believe going cold-turkey feels intimidating or overwhelming, nutrition-packed desserts are a great way to stick to healthy food goals without the guilt.

This recipe is a classic favorite. If you cut the bars into 16 pieces, they are around 270 calories each. They are very filling, packed with healthy goodies and taste oh so delicious. If you can’t finish them yourself (it makes a lot!), bring samples along to your next workout class to share the love. Your accountability group will be asking you for the recipe! These come in handy for a quick breakfast on-the-go or an afternoon snack. You’ll want to taste these out of the oven once they cool a bit... simply scrumptious. Combine: • 1 cup wheat flour • 2 cups cooked quinoa, cooled • 2 cups oats • 2/3 cup of your choice of chopped nuts

Add this mixture slowly to combine: • 2 eggs • 2/3 cup peanut butter, almond butter or sunflower butter • 1/2 cup honey • 1 banana • 1 teaspoon vanilla Bake at 375 degrees for 20 minutes, or until the edges get golden brown. Award-winning stand-up comic, podcast host, and author John Crist has made a name for himself through his impressive career in comedy. After going viral and earning hundreds of millions of views for his hilarious sketches relating to everyday life, Crist has continued to grow his platform through national tours, stand-up specials, and a steady stream of character-driven content. Not only did a viral moment lead him to his big break, but it also led him to his fiancée, Lydia Fielder. Born and raised in Northwest Arkansas,

“I think [it’s true that] laughter is a good medicine… humor has a way of breaking down the walls between people,” John explains. CONTINUED >

Lydia is a University of Arkansas graduate and Emmy-nominated anchor and reporter for WSMV4, Nashville’s NBC affiliate. While the pair have had many parallels throughout their lives, the couple met in a way that perfectly blended their two worlds — weather reporting and comedy. “I thought it'd be a funny sketch to do a fake news story about a news anchor melting down because it's so cold outside… it [was] fake, but it looked like it was the real news,” Crist explains. “Then somebody sent me [Lydia’s] Instagram video of her literally doing the same thing that I was making a joke of.“ John sent a message to Lydia to poke fun at the coincidence of the video—which still remains his most viral to date—and the two immediately hit it off. Several months later, John was on tour and set to perform at a venue in Lydia’s town. He invited her to the show, and the rest was history! After months of dating long-distance, Lydia relocated to Nashville when her contract ended at her Arkansas news station, and she landed a new role as an anchor and reporter at WSMV. After almost four years of dating, Crist popped the question, and the pair got engaged at the Schermerhorn Symphony Center in downtown Nashville this past August. The day was filled with surprises from start to finish! Met with an intimate, candle-lit entrance and string quartet, Lydia walked through the doors to what she thought was a comedy award show—little did she know, John had made up the whole thing to get her all dressed up with no suspicion. “He called every single one of my friends and family members personally and invited them,” Lydia shares. “He proposed, and there was a quartet from the Nashville Symphony playing super special songs to us. [Once we left,] he [took] me down to the river saying we were going to take pictures… I turned around, and all of our friends and family were on the Pontoon Saloon boat, all decorated with white tablecloths and cake.” The pair are enjoying wedding planning and are looking forward to celebrating with an Arkansas ceremony. While her knowledge of comedy has certainly strengthened since meeting John, Lydia wasn’t always an expert in the field. When it comes to supporting each other and their careers, they value the importance

of encouraging one another and continuing to show up as true partners in every season. “I get excited about comedy stuff, and I try to follow along because it's showing love and investing in what your partner absolutely loves… [it’s] a form of loving them,” Lydia explains. When it comes to shaping his comedic voice, John shares that Lydia has inspired him in many ways—from the nuances of their relationship to the small, everyday moments they navigate together, their partnership has naturally become a defining muse for his work. “You always tell people that your comedy grows with the stage of life that you're in... I think both of us have made an agreement that we're going to be a part of the other person's career,” John shares. “There's nothing that I say that's really safe [with] John pulling out his Notes app,” Lydia adds. “I know when I see him get on the note, he's writing down a premise or an idea.” One thing that sets John apart is his willingness to dip into territory others might shy away from. He shares that the subjects people hesitate to talk about are often the ones that most deserve a little light—and sometimes a good laugh.

“I think [it’s true that] laughter is a good medicine… humor has a way of breaking down the walls between people,” John explains. “If you look at any good speech, [it’ll start] with a joke in a way to break open the walls a little bit. If you ever meet me, I'm going to be joking—it's a way to connect.“ In addition to his latest comedy special, John Crist: Emotional Support, being released in early 2026, he hit another major career milestone by appearing on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon. He will also be kicking off the John Crist Live Tour on

January 23rd. In addition, Lydia recently received a nomination for the Nashville Midsouth Emmys Rising Star Award, an honor for emerging professionals in the television and media industry, as well as her first Emmy nomination for her work on an Opry 100 red carpet special. She anchors weekdays on WSMV starting at 3 p.m. For more information on John and Lydia, follow them on socials. @johnbcrist @lyfeoflyd

H E L LO N E W Y E A R , H E L LO N E W YO U ! Begin these breezy and doable habits to make 2026 a phenomenal one ARTICLE BY MARY COMPTON

ACTION ASPIRATIONS:

A winter sport you’ve never tried but wanted to pick up can make for healthy recreation. Skiing, snowboarding, or snow hiking can keep your body active and in shape. Sledding with the kids because it’s fun is also a great avocation. Joining a hockey league or ice skating around a rink can be entertaining exercises. Adventure outside and build a snowman. Make use of the sunny days by getting outdoors for some vitamin D. You can keep a resolution to exercise even during the winter.

BRAIN POWER:

Reading, writing, or starting a new hobby like chess or a musical instrument can challenge your brain. Use your brain power for activities like crossword puzzles or learning a new language. Journaling in particular is a great way to alleviate stress and fight mental blockage. Letting your thoughts unwind can relieve tension from the holidays. Inspiring yourself mentally can be a very beneficial resolution, keeping your brain vibrant and young.

FAMILY AND FRIENDS:

Although we have spent much time this past Christmas with those we love and cherish, it is important to maintain our relationships throughout the entire year. Harvard Medical School published an article on building health and keeping your brain fit. They found that strong social ties can lower the risk of dementia and high blood pressure while increasing longevity. So, make plans with family and friends, being sure to stay involved in their lives all year long.

SELF-CARE:

The holidays keep us very busy. This time of year, it is all about loving others, giving, expressing joy, and gratitude to those we love. In addition, it is important to recoup and rejuvenate our own spirit with selfcare. Enjoy a relaxing bubble bath, do some retail therapy, try a new style, and invest in yourself by putting yourself first. Winter can be a brutal battle on our systems. Take vitamins, collagen, drink plenty of water, and get a good night’s sleep. These easy habits can improve your overall self now and in the future.

DAILY GRINDS:

Habits we set daily make a huge transformation as they add up. Everyday habits may include: limiting your screen time on the phone or computer, saving time. Also, keeping clutter and mess cleared and cleaned decreases environmental stress. Practicing a regulated morning and evening routine can organize your day. Wake up, stretch, and prepare for each day. Start the day off a little earlier and give yourself time to wind down after work.

FUTURE BUILDING:

Start investing in your future now, and what better time to start than the New Year? Financial and career advancements, initiate them today. Set a career goal, make a step-by-step strategy to achieve your target, and act on it. Define a long-term vision and break it down into achievable milestones. Plan for better health. Stick to your workout schedule and routine. Commit to social engagements. If you’re struggling with a plan, simply agree to show up. Show up to the gym, show up to life, show up and begin.

STRONGER THAN EVER

HOW WHITNEY

WISER REBUILT HER BODY, HER MIND,

AND THE FITNESS COMMUNITY AROUND HER

ARTICLE BY SOPHIE BROCK PHOTOGRAPHY PROVIDED

Brentwood Lifestyle had the opportunity to sit down with fitness expert Whitney Wiser to dive into her incredible journey, one marked by growth and a deep commitment to empowering women in the fitness and competition world.

WHAT INITIALLY INSPIRED YOU TO GET INVOLVED IN THE FITNESS/COMPETITION WORLD?

I’ve been an athlete for most of my life, and I was just looking for a new way or outlet for my athletic and competitive nature. When I was about to graduate from college, I realized that I wouldn’t have any sports to compete in anymore. The idea of competing in the bikini division of bodybuilding was oddly intriguing to me when I first discovered it. When I finally got involved, it gave me an outlet and a new challenge to pursue. I was determined to get better and better as I became more involved in it over the first couple of years. Building muscle for my body to look a certain way had never been a goal of mine before. Up until that point, my goal for lifting had always been to simply build strength and get faster, so I could perform better on the basketball court or any other field or court I played on. Competing also gave me a purpose to pursue, as I was about to go through one of the most devastating setbacks of my life. I had finally decided to leave the toxic and abusive relationship I was in. He had a horrible reaction to this, resulting in a serious injury. I had to have emergency back surgery at Vanderbilt Medical Center, where they fused my spine with metal rods and screws in place. The doctors said I’d have to learn how to walk again and that I wouldn’t be able to compete anymore. I couldn’t even process what they were saying, but when I finally did, my stubbornness said otherwise, and I was then on a mission to prove everyone wrong and not let this determine the rest of my life. I slowly but surely came back with a vengeance and kept getting back on stage until I earned my pro status three years later. It was not a smooth journey over those three years either, but I kept pushing and kept trying no matter how long it was going to take -- mentally I was locked in on the end goal. Since earning my pro card, this sport has led me to so much more than just “competing” on stage. I started judging and helping athletes get better by giving them feedback on how they could improve. Eventually, I realized I could help them better if I were backstage or even on stage with them, so I started expediting. Expeditors are the people who line up the athletes backstage to ensure they are in the right class and get them to the stage. Then, the on-stage expeditor stays with them to tell them where to go and what to do and when to do it, so I liked that position much better, and I continue to do that now.

During this whole process, I became intrigued with the production side of the shows and also the lack of effort of current promoters years ago. I was sitting at the judges’ table one day years ago and thought, “I could promote a show better than this.” And that small seed planted in my mind started growing until I couldn’t ignore it anymore. I slowly started trying to figure out how to put on and even “promote” a show myself. It took some time, but now I’ve been running shows for almost a decade with the athletes’ best interests in mind. I always want to make sure that every woman who stands on that stage feels like the rockstar that she really is and has a pro-level stage to stand on!

WHAT’S ONE MISCONCEPTION PEOPLE HAVE ABOUT FITNESS THAT YOU WISH YOU COULD CORRECT?

The biggest misconception for fitness in general is probably women thinking they will get big, “bulky” muscles by lifting weights and eating protein. Building muscle definitely doesn’t happen that easily or overnight like that, but I really wish it did! Women can actually only gain about 1-2 pounds of muscle per month, and that’s if they are eating enough in general, but specifically protein, and if they are training and recovering properly, specifically for building muscle. I have a theory, though, and it’s that the “bulk” they think they see is actually the layer of fat over the muscle! Muscle itself is lean and dense. It’s what adds shape to your body and

72

LOCA L LIM E LIGH T | HEALT H + WE LLN E SS

what makes you look fit and “toned,” as most women like to say. Tone is muscle, though. The biggest misconception about competing is that it’s just for vanity. I feel like bodybuilding is looked at as a very selfish sport that is competitive and narcissistic. It’s actually a community of very tight-knit, but welcoming people who strive to help each other. At least on the women’s side of the sport, I can speak for directly. Usually, when people are exposed to this industry for the first time, they are extremely surprised by how helpful, supportive, and friendly everyone is! I started seeing this even more so a few years ago at the all-female competition I created in 2018 and continue to host every year now called the NPC/IFBB Nashville Fit Show. Backstage girls are helping each other with their suits, hair, and hyping each other up to go out on stage, and then staying in touch long after show day! Most people outside our industry probably wouldn’t believe this unless they saw it firsthand, but it’s pretty amazing to see so much support and strength among a group of women.

WHAT’S THE BIGGEST LESSON YOU’VE LEARNED FROM YOUR OWN COMPETITION EXPERIENCES/FITNESS JOURNEY THAT YOU NOW PASS ON TO OTHERS?

Basically, every mistake I made – and I made just about all of them – helped me learn how to do things a better way, and that is part of my passion and purpose now: to educate other women on how to be successful, on stage and beyond it. I teach other women through 1-on-1 and group coaching, the workshops I host, my social media, and more. The biggest lesson overall is to use every competition – or every experience – as a learning experience to get better for the next one. You can’t control who you compete against, the preferences of the judges, or many other factors -- but you can focus on you and your progress to become better day by day and show to show.

CAN YOU WALK ME THROUGH A MOMENT WHERE YOU FACED A MAJOR SETBACK AND HOW YOU PUSHED PAST IT?

Being in a severe car incident that broke my spine was a pretty major setback. Learning to walk again and slowly building my body back a little bit at a time, day by day, was very difficult. I had to actively build my mind back in the process to even have the motivation and discipline to build my body back, too. God gave me the tools and the steps to do things back then that I didn’t even have the language for yet. For example, I had no clue what “visualization” was back then, but I was doing it almost every day. I would walk around the neighborhood block hundreds of times (because that’s all I had the capability to do yet) and just visualize myself on stage competing again. Specifically, seeing myself standing next to the other competitors in a line-up, being judged on stage, and winning. Over and over again. Reading books by Joyce Meyer, like “Power Thoughts” and “The Battlefield of the Mind,” helped me stay grounded and focus on the positive. Having a vision and a purpose to pursue is what helped me push through the setback to come back better and stronger.

HOW DO YOU THINK THE FITNESS/COMPETITION SPACE IS EVOLVING FOR WOMEN, AND WHERE DO YOU HOPE TO SEE IT GO IN THE NEXT FEW YEARS?

I saw it starting to evolve almost nine years ago, and that’s a big reason I started my all-female competition, and I believe it’s still trending in the same direction with the added divisions on the women’s side of the sport. More women are becoming interested in building muscle, becoming stronger, and competing in this sport as a challenge for themselves to push themselves even further.

WHAT’S ONE PIECE OF ADVICE YOU WISH MORE PEOPLE WOULD LEAN INTO WHEN STARTING THEIR FITNESS JOURNEY?

To start small by gradually making health & fitness part of their lifestyle instead of trying to overhaul their whole life routine by going to extremes or looking for “quick fixes.” So many start out strong by following a strict diet & intense workout routine, only to get burned out within a month and then go right back to where they were before they started. You don’t have to overhaul your whole way of living to make progress, especially not at first. Small changes and habits – like drinking enough water each day – make a huge difference in the long run and also make it way more sustainable. Also, to all my ladies out there -- don’t be scared of muscle, it’s not bulky! Muscle is what is going to give you a better quality of life now and in the future!
