Holidays & Giving
The holiday season is here, bringing sights, sounds, and traditions that make this time of year so magical. For many of us, the holidays are a chance to recreate the joy we felt as children, whether it’s through the twinkle of festive lights, the aroma of holiday baking, or cherished family traditions.
This month, we’ve curated a gift guide to help make your holiday shopping easier while supporting local businesses. We’ve also highlighted the best of what Brentwood has to offer during the holidays, from events and entertainment to opportunities for giving back.
While this season is joyful for many, it can also be a difficult time for those who are grieving, lonely, or in need. In the spirit of the season, let’s come together as a community to extend kindness and compassion to those who may be struggling. Whether it’s donating to a local charity, volunteering your time, or simply checking in on a neighbor, every act of generosity makes a difference.
May your holidays be filled with love, peace, and the joy of giving.

Reindeer Road Trip
The Reindeer Farm is a squeal of an excursion for family and friends to meet Santa’s best
Now Dasher, now Dancer, now Prancer and Vixen, on Comet on Cupid, on Mistletoe and Flea. Mistletoe and Flea are just two of the crew of 10 reindeer at The Reindeer Farm in Bowling Green, Kentucky. The only reindeer farm in the South was started during COVID-19 in 2020 as a family project. Four years prior, husband and wife Russell and Jessica Anderson decided on a career twist. Russell, having grown up on a farm, and Jessica, from rural Kentucky, who always wanted a farm, decided to open their own, with reindeer. They started out with two and now have 10, at start, hoping to achieve a unique and special childhood for their three children. And presently, thousands of visitors arrive every year during the Christmas season to enjoy all the marvels the farm has to offer.
Mistletoe is the biggest reindeer on sight and a little sassy. “She’s pretty and she knows it,” said Jessica of her favorite reindeer. Flea is laid back and especially good with special needs children. Mistletoe carries the largest antlers of the group. Both male and female reindeer sport antlers. Reindeer have the largest and heaviest antlers of all living deer species. The caribou are covered in fur from nose to hooves, giving them a good grip on frozen ground or rooftops.
When asked, one of the most frequent questions is, “Why are they not flying for you?” Jessica cheerfully answers it’s “Christmas magic” from Santa that makes them fly. And when the question arises, “Where is Rudolph?” the staff discloses he is at the North Pole prepping for Christmas.
Not only are there reindeer on the farm, but also visits with Santa, Mrs. Claus, the Grinch, and a petting zoo with a collection of farm animals, from mini cows, to bunnies to eight donkeys, 14 alpacas, Kune Kune pigs, and more.
There is no shortage of games, activities, food, and fun. Events like Breakfast with Santa or Breakfast with the Grinch are a thrill for the family. For more adventures on site, there are plenty for the kids to enjoy as well as the adults. There is Wine Wonderland, sourcing local wines, a food truck with a cozy winter menu, a gift shop, and more. There is a bounce house, giant games of chess, cornhole, authentic sleighs and reindeer for pictures, and speedy ziplines. Other activities include Christmas Karaoke and Live Icing Sculpting by Danny Kissel, from Food Network’s Outrageous Pumpkins and Halloween Wars, who works with ice, too.
Breakfast with Santa includes a country buffet breakfast, one-on-one time with Santa, a day pass, and a picture with a reindeer. The Day Pass gives you access to everything on the farm, while the Encounter with the Reindeer Pass gets you inside the pen, up close with the reindeer for pictures and petting. Cameras are allowed. When visiting, remember to wear comfortable shoes and be aware of the weather since it is outdoors. Sensible shoes are best, and wear layers.
New this year is the farm’s Night Pass, which includes all the farm has to offer, but under the glow of jolly Christmas lights and music. The farm is especially festive in the evening, and you will enjoy a night of Christmas delight with those you love.
The Reindeer Farm has established quite a community with families returning each year as their holiday tradition and a treasury of over 89,000 Facebook followers. Visitors come back year after year from all over the globe. Two different families are even visiting from faraway Australia.
It started as a dream, a project to create fond memories with friends and family. And now this small family farm has grown to the holiday glee of many friends and families. “We really want people to gather and make memories,” said Jessica. She and Russell love what they do, and it brings joy to their hearts. “It fills my cup,” said Jessica.
Not a long drive from Nashville, about an hour and 10 minutes, it is a great option for a day road trip. And only another 10 to 15 minutes to downtown Bowling Green with hotels, restaurants, and shops.
The farm is open Friday and Saturday, 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Sundays are open from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. The Night Pass is open every night, including weekends, from 6 p.m. to 10 p.m., running from Nov. 14 until Dec. 31, closed on Thanksgiving and Christmas. When setting out cookies and milk for Santa, be sure to leave oats or leaves from willow and apple trees for his flying companions, too. They love those best.
For more information and to book tickets, visit their website for more details on pass options. Tickets are flying fast!

Crafting Incredible Kitchen & Bath Designs
ARTICLE BY SUE BALDANI
Updating a kitchen and/or bathroom adds enormous value to any home. But, more importantly, having a beautiful space that fits your aesthetic and needs brings a level of functionality and appreciation that is priceless.
Unfortunately, many homeowners are intimidated by the entire process. After all, there are myriad steps involved, from hiring the right contractor and finding a designer who understands your vision to choosing the right materials. It can be truly overwhelming, and finding the right partner in this journey is essential.
With locations in Brentwood and Tampa, FL, its team possesses an incredible 70 years of combined industry experience. “Our team is made up of experienced design consultants, skilled craftsmen, and dedicated project managers,” says marketing manager Jennifer Cobat. “They are professionals who share a passion for transforming homes and exceeding expectations.”
Its staff participates in ongoing education and product training to stay ahead of design trends, new materials, and best practices in remodeling. “Most importantly, our clients can trust that we approach every project with integrity, attention to detail, and a commitment to delivering exceptional results that stand the test of time.”
Unlike big box stores that offer one-sizefits-all solutions, the team at DesignCraft provides a boutique experience that begins in your home, not in a store aisle. This no-cost consultation allows them to understand homeowners’ unique spaces, needs, and styles, and then tailor a design just for them.
CONTINUED >
“By meeting our clients in their own space, our designers can see their home’s layout, lighting, and architectural details firsthand,” she says. “This allows us to make personalized recommendations that enhance both the form and function of their home.”
During the consultation, a thorough discussion takes place and includes the homeowner’s goals and style preferences, as well as how they use their space. “This on-site, tailored approach helps our clients make confident decisions and ensures that the finished design feels truly integrated with their home and lifestyle,” says Jennifer. “Following the in-home consultation, clients are invited into one of our local showrooms to view a 3D design rendering, and are guided through material and design options that best fit their needs and budget by their design consultant.”
Because all great designs deserve great materials, DesignCraft partners with trusted manufacturers known for craftsmanship, durability, and style. “From premium cabinetry and countertops to high-performance fixtures and hardware, every product we recommend is selected for its quality, value, and long-term performance,” she says. “Our curated selections allow homeowners to choose from an array of finishes, styles, and configurations,
ensuring that each space not only looks beautiful but also functions perfectly for their daily lives. The wide range of semi-custom to custom cabinetry lines we carry allows us to provide our clients with solutions to fit their budget.”
Best of all, DesignCraft manages the entire project from start to finish. “A dedicated designer and project manager oversee every detail from concept and material selection to installation and completion, ensuring a seamless experience and consistent communication throughout,” says Jennifer. “Our clients receive the personal attention, design expertise, and craftsmanship that simply can’t be matched by large retail chains.”
One of its talented teams recently completed a stunning kitchen renovation in Franklin. The homeowners wanted to open up their space and create a layout better suited to their lifestyle, so the project began with a design vision centered on functionality and flow. “Our team reconfigured the entire layout of the kitchen,” she says. “We expanded and relocated the back wall of the kitchen to incorporate a hidden walk-in pantry, adding both convenience and a welcoming space behind the sleek cabinetry.”
“By meeting our clients in their own space, our designers can see their home’s layout, lighting, and architectural details firsthand.”
Sustainability and creativity played a significant role in this transformation. Instead of replacing everything, the existing cabinets were trimmed and repurposed to create storage in the new pantry, preserving the craftsmanship and character of the originals. “The existing pine floors throughout the main level were replaced with wide-plank engineered wood flooring, bringing a clean, cohesive look to the home,” says Jennifer. “In addition, those original pine boards found a second life as custom open shelving in the new pantry, adding a handcrafted touch to the design. Even the former bar top was salvaged and refinished as the pantry countertop, giving new purpose to a familiar piece of the home.”
Since the homeowners were devoted coffee enthusiasts, the team designed a dedicated coffee bar as part of the new layout, complete with a built-in pot filler to make brewing the perfect cup even easier.
“The result is a kitchen that feels open, bright, and thoughtfully curated,” she says. “Every detail reflects the homeowners’ lifestyle and personality, blending modern comfort in a way that feels both fresh and timeless.”

A SEASON OF kindness
FRIENDS OF MACC REMINDS US THAT COMPASSION IS THE GREATEST GIFT OF ALL
ARTICLE BY SOPHIE BROCK | PHOTOGRAPHY PROVIDED
As the holiday season and the new year approach, the spirit of giving fills the air. Yet amid the celebrations, one group often goes unnoticed: the stray and abandoned animals in our community.
Dedicated to giving these animals a second chance, Friends of MACC, a local, volunteer-run nonprofit, partners with Metro Animal Care and Control (MACC) to support the care of more than 4,000 homeless pets each year. Through their compassion and commitment, these volunteers remind us that kindness is the most meaningful gift of all.
“We are a volunteer-run organization, so we can always use more people who want to do good,” says Becky Carter, board chair. “Given that we are a young organization, we are working hard to build a solid foundation so that we can help for many years to come. We would love for more people to get involved, whether it be a local business, community group, or an individual, so we can reach more people and help more pets and their families.”
Friends of MACC works to expand the reach of MACC’s mission by providing awareness, resources, and additional support for three key focuses: the Foster Program, the Safety Net Program, and the Emergency Medical Fund. Together, these programs offer vital medical, financial, and emotional assistance to both the animals in need and the people who care for them.
“We really hope to focus on three things in 2026,” Becky adds. “We want to continue to raise funds and support our primary areas of support, which include our Emergency Medical Fund; Safety Net Program, which includes low to no-cost spay/neuter, microchips, and rabies vaccines; Animal Enrichment; and the Foster Program to help the pets while they wait to be adopted!”
With a mission as meaningful as theirs, it truly takes a village to make a lasting impact—and that’s exactly what Friends of MACC has built. Thanks to the dedication of passionate volunteers and countless community members who have participated in their programs, real change is happening every day. In 2025 alone, the organization is on track to help more than 2,000 families care, and provide for their pets’ needs to keep them home, and has provided funding for more than 100 emergency medical cases for homeless pets, giving both animals and their people a second chance.
As the year draws to a close, get involved and mark your calendars for Giving Tuesday on Dec. 2 and Shelter Dog Yoga on Dec. 14. In the new year, the organization is keeping the momentum going—so save the date for their “I Love You a Brunch” fundraising event in partnership with Loveless Cafe on Feb. 15, 2026. They also plan to launch their own signature fundraising event, which will not only increase the organization’s visibility but also help raise the much-needed funds to sustain their impact. All are opportunities to give back, connect, and celebrate the difference compassion can make.
Friends of MACC continues to remind the community that one of the most impactful ways to make a difference is by choosing adoption.
Friends of MACC continues to remind the community that one of the most impactful ways to make a difference is by choosing adoption. They encourage everyone to visit their local shelter and open their hearts and homes to animals in need, rather than purchasing from breeders. Each adoption not only gives a pet a second chance at life but also helps make room for another animal in need of care. In addition, they emphasize the importance of spaying and neutering pets—simple yet essential steps that help reduce overpopulation and ensure healthier, happier lives for animals across the community.
To stay up to date on upcoming events, current needs, and adoptable pets, be sure to follow Friends of MACC on social media. Whether you’re looking to donate, volunteer, or simply spread the word, every bit of support helps further their goal to care for animals and strengthen the community that loves them. LOEWS NASHVILLE HOTEL IS HOSTING ITS SECOND ANNUAL HOT CHOCOLATE AFFAIR TO FETCH IN A FROSTY WINTER
HOT CHOCOLATE AFFAIR
From the Hot Chocolate dance in the Polar Express to the ancient Aztecs and Mayans, who created this cozy concoction, it’s a marshmallow world in the winter and not quite Christmas without a quaint cup of hot chocolate.
decked plaza. Tables set with white tablecloths usher in the revelers as they are seated and attended. The serenade of the piano player, performing Christmas classics and modern tunes in classical format, plays on.
“NASHVILLE EMBODIES THE SPIRIT OF WHAT CHRISTMAS IS ALL ABOUT,” SAID POZIN.
Celebrate with us as we take a sip of the season.
Loews Nashville Hotel is sharing the season with its second annual Hot Chocolate Affair, running now through March 2026. Loews Nashville Hotel at Vanderbilt Plaza is Nashville’s premier luxury hotel. The event is hosted in the hotel’s restaurant, Mason’s, and the Hot Chocolate Affair is bringing friends and family together as they enjoy a scrumptious teacup overflowing with this classic indulgence.
The event started in a whimsical way. It’s Loews’ twist on afternoon tea. The experience is replicated but with velvety, luscious, hot chocolate in an ornate teapot instead of classic tea, a novel way to drink the beverage. And this novel idea blossomed into a favorite holiday outing for many, said Jereme Pozin, Director of Food and Beverages at Loews Nashville.
Upon arriving at the hotel, attenders can make use of the complimentary valet and enter into a Christmas-
The visitors are treated to their fancy of hot chocolate, which is served by waiters and poured to the brim. The types of hot chocolate flavors change with the season. During the fall, the options were pumpkin and white chocolate. For winter, the selections are dark chocolate, milk chocolate, and peppermint. The hot chocolates come with decadent chocolate shavings, pillowy marshmallows, whipped cream, and chocolate-dipped spoons —all the necessities. With the hot chocolate, you are given a three-tier stand filled with cakes, pastries, and tarts by Pastry Chef Anne Jaskoski.
The first tier offers pastries, including chocolate and plain croissants made in-house, as well as sugar plum scones. The second tier has cheesecake tarts, pecan pie tarts, peppermint dark chocolate tarts, and six different kinds of macarons: almond, chocolate, espresso, raspberry, and more. Chocolate-dipped pretzels, perfect for dunking, are arranged to be devoured.
The third tier presents chocolate-covered strawberries and three different types of layered cakes: lemon raspberry, opera, and strawberry, a vegan option. There is a gluten-free tower available, and everything is vegetarian. A savory bite rounds out the experience with candied bacon jam, Boursin cheese, brioche, and fragrant pine syrup.
Espresso martinis are another popular treat. Three varieties: the chocolate hazelnut-vodka with Frangelico and fresh chocolate, the bourbon Caramel pecanwith whiskey from Nelson Brothers, and a seasonal gingerbread espresso martini made with tequila. The espressos are in partnership with Frothy Monkey, a homegrown coffee shop.
The Hot Chocolate Affair is every Saturday and Sunday, with select Friday dates. Seating times available are: 12 p.m., 12:15 p.m., 1:45 p.m., and 2 p.m.
Nashville is an exciting and vibrant place to spend the holidays. “Nashville embodies the spirit of what Christmas is all about,” said Pozin. He hopes that the memories his guests make will last a lifetime.
The Hot Chocolate Affair can serve up to 100 people a day, and thousands who attend every year from various places across the United States. Book a reservation on Resy.com for a charming escapade before or after a bustling day of yuletide shopping.

BEHIND THE PUPPETS
Meet Megan Piphus — artist, author, four-time Emmy Award winner, and puppeteer behind Sesame Street’s Gabrielle.
Hailing from Cincinnati, Ohio, Piphus has always been driven by passion. While her parents — her mother, a speech pathologist, and her father, a pastor — were at work, she often spent her days with an elder of the church who introduced her to PBS and the world of puppetry. Piphus credits her early education to shows such as Sesame Street, Mister Rogers' Neighborhood, The Shari Lewis Show, and Lamb Chop’s Play-Along, where she was captivated by the vibrant worlds beyond her screen. She immediately fell in love with the characters and the magic they held, sparking her lifelong love for storytelling and imagination.
When Megan was ten years old, a teacher at her church, Dorothy Smith, inspired her to learn puppetry. Hoping to make a greater impact with her Vacation Bible School lessons, she took a group of teens and preteens — including Megan — to the International Festival of Christian Puppetry and Ventriloquism to learn the craft and share it with their church.
“I just admire the characters, the art, and the ability to imagine and place yourself into a different world.”
“I went to this conference and saw many incredible performers, but I was specifically inspired by these women ventriloquists that would perform in the evenings of the conference,” Megan shares. “They would sing songs and tell stories with their puppets… I was very shy and not very confident in being able to share my creativity, and I immediately thought, ‘that's the way that I want to share my voice.’”
Eager to get started, Megan’s mother helped her rent DVDs and VHS tapes from the library to learn more about ventriloquism. They found a ventriloquist dummy from a local toy store, and a couple of weeks later, she was performing for her classmates. Though Piphus was only expected to show her puppet and share how she learned the art, the young performer wrote a full script on God's love and performed it in front of the entire elementary school.
“In that moment, I realized I could teach anything to a child,” Megan explains. “The kindergarteners all the way to the sixth graders learned about salvation in that script, and I was able to capture the attention of the whole room. From that moment, it was my passion to be able to teach kids and families through their imagination.”
For years, Piphus balanced school and performing. Earning a full-ride scholarship to Vanderbilt University, the trailblazer moved to Nashville at seventeen to study Economics, music, and Spanish — all while performing puppetry on the weekends. At age twenty, she reached the Vegas rounds on America’s Got Talent . Though passionate about entertainment, she pursued a master’s in finance and spent seven years in real estate finance, continuing to perform and teach children in her free time.
“Being on Sesame Street and walking through the doors was like walking into my childhood.”
— MEGAN PIPHUS
An article about Piphus caught the attention of a University of Cincinnati professor who invited her to help teach kids financial literacy through puppetry and song. Together, they created a video series covering topics like budgeting and supply and demand — allowing Piphus to merge her passions for finance and puppetry. Around the same time, she sent an audition tape to the Jim Henson Company, and in 2020 received a life-changing email from Sesame Street producers: the opportunity to join Sesame Street ’s mentorship program. After three months of being in the mentorship program, she had the opportunity to audition for the role of Gabrielle. Not only did she get the role, but she also made history as the show’s first full-time Black female puppeteer.
“Being on Sesame Street and walking through the doors was like walking into my childhood,” Megan shared. “What's special about the street is that you can actually go in and touch and feel the set — it’s not animated. You can hug Elmo and Big Bird and tell them about your memories and have conversations… it's literally being able to get in a time machine and reconnect with my childhood self and being able to create that same experience for everyone who watches the show.“
Growing up surrounded by music, Piphus began singing, writing, and producing songs at a young age and released her album Cinderella Sweep in July of 2025. In addition to features from several acclaimed artists, Piphus teamed up with Saving Our Daughters, a nonprofit, to
form a 53-member “Cinderella Choir” made up of young girls aiming to encourage and inspire through the power of song. The album addresses themes like self-esteem, bullying, identity, and dreaming big.
Piphus is adding the title of author to her resumè as her children’s book, Brave Like A Lion , is set to release in May of 2026. Inspired by her children, Piphus recalls the challenges that came along with her son’s speech delay when he was younger. She specifically noticed his confidence grow wildly after a visit to his classroom where she helped teach puppetry to the class, giving each student the opportunity to turn a paper bag into a puppet, give it a character and voice, then present it to their peers.
“My son confidently got up with his puppet and gave it a personality and name… after that moment of making something with his classmates and sharing his creativity, he actually became really interested in puppetry, and he would play with my puppets at home and have full conversations with them [it]… I could see his creativity blossom,” Megan shares.
Whether it’s recording music, writing a book, bringing characters to life, teaching children, or raising her own family, Piphus wears many hats and continues to shine not only in the Nashville community but nationwide. Keep up with the latest updates on her website or on her social media.

Personalized Podiatric Care from Premium Providers
When Dr. Yerusalem Lanier graduated from residency five years ago, she was not only a new podiatrist, but also new to Nashville. No one knew her, and she understood that if she wanted her practice, Cutting Edge Foot and Ankle Clinic, to be successful, she had to change that, and fast.
“I had zero patients and one employee, so I had to be my own representative,” she says. A true entrepreneur, she went to primary care physicians’ offices and introduced herself. She went to Walmart, Home Depot, and urgent care clinics and handed out her cards.
Soon, one patient led to two, two led to four, and through word of mouth, patients just kept coming. “Patients start sending us their uncles, their aunts, their cousins, and friends,” says Dr. Lanier. “We made sure we made them comfortable and let them know that we were here for their well-being.”
Dr. Lanier’s goal was simple: To create a place where every decision and every treatment plan revolved around the patient.
In the first two years, she was the sole provider, but then she brought in Dr. David Farnen, who shared her goals and beliefs about treating patients. “He's as fierce as I am,” she says. “He works nonstop, and he doesn't say no to patients. Dr. Farnen had a
big part in growing the practice, and today he's a part owner.”
Now, five years later, Cutting Edge Foot and Ankle Clinic has five locations, six providers, 40 employees, and thousands of patients.
When hiring new providers, Dr. Lanier and Dr. Farnen are personally involved to ensure that all patients receive the best possible care. “It's so hard to add people to the practice,” she says. “Resumes just don't cut it when it comes to choosing the right person. I always look for niceness. If you’re nice, we know you’ll be nice to patients, and everything else is trainable.”
She adds, “We see patients at their most vulnerable times, often when they're in pain, and we have to have sympathy and empathy. If you don't have those things, you cannot be a good doctor, no matter how skilled you are.”
In addition to Dr. Lanier and Dr. Farnen, providers include Dr. Gary Cockrell, Dr. Berkeley Nicholls, Morgan Hubble, and Rojin Abdulla.
Dr. Lanier works in the Brentwood and Skyline locations alongside Dr. Farnen and Dr. Gary Cockrell, who joined the practice last year. Dr. Berkeley Nicholls joined the practice this year after retiring from his own practice in Nashville and works out of the Brentwood and Centennial locations.
Morgan Hubble is a board-certified family nurse practitioner and has been with the practice for four years. You can find her in the Whitehouse location. Rojin Abdullah, a certified physician’s assistant, joined the practice last year and works in the Pleasant View location.
When choosing locations for her practice, she wanted to make sure that patients didn’t have to travel more than 15 minutes each way.
Dr. Lanier is proud of the practice she has built with the help of Dr. Farnen. “I have employees who have been with me since I opened, so it's kind of like a little family, a community that we have,” she says. “I’m also proud that my girls—12-year-old Hope and 14-year-old Alexandria—see mommy being a boss and a business owner, and making decisions, especially in what is generally considered a man’s field.” Her husband, David, is also in healthcare as an emergency room physician.

TIPS ON KEEPING FEET HEALTHY IN THE NEW YEAR:
The new year often inspires people to focus on improving their diets and exercise routines. However, many become too active too fast. “Instead of starting slowly, they just go all in, and then they hurt,” says Dr. Lanier. “They may develop plantar fasciitis or ankle pain because their bodies aren’t used to physical activity. My advice is to start slowly and increase it by 10% each week to give your body time to adjust.”
With the prevalence of pickleball, she and her colleagues are also seeing a lot more injuries, especially to the Achilles tendon. “Pickleball is a great sport. I play all the time, but I'm an active person. If you're going to play and haven’t been active in the past, make sure you start walking first and do some stretching. I see a lot of Achilles tendon ruptures from people playing this sport.”
Proper footwear is also essential for foot health. “You have all these pressure points when you’re walking, and you have ground reaction forces attacking your feet every single step,” she says. “You want something that supports your arches and feet. Also, if you have recurrent ankle sprains, make sure your footwear goes above your ankle.”
Some achiness and mild pain are common when you first start a new fitness regimen or increase your activity level, and in these situations, rest is the best treatment. “If you’re in pain, that means your body's telling you to rest,” says Dr. Lanier. “I wouldn't just walk through pain. Listen to your body.”
If the pain does not go away by the third day, or if it’s more localized, it can mean you have a more serious injury. It's then time to see a professional.
Dr. Yerusalem Lanier’s Holiday Wish:
“Let’s just love each other. Try to listen to and give to others. My dad is a great entrepreneur, and I once asked him for advice. He said two things - pay your taxes and help the poor.”

LIVING THEIR BEST LIVES

A SENIOR COMMUNITY THAT ENCOURAGES A WELL-ROUNDED LIFESTYLE
While some seniors may think that transitioning into a senior living community means giving up their independence, residents of The Heritage at Brentwood, a Life Care® Community, are clearly not doing so. “At The Heritage, independent living is both encouraged and enabled so strongly that you’re more apt to increase your independence than for it to diminish,” says Hank Dye, who, along with his wife Margaret, has been residing there since March.
“I had never in my life attempted to draw anything, but now the art classes are teaching me the basic skills and encouraging me,” she says. “The water aerobics classes have challenged me in new ways and made me feel healthier. At age 80, I even bought a new swimsuit!”
Margaret has discovered other new interests as well. A big reader, she is most proud of organizing a book club. “It’s the first book club I have ever been a part of,” she says.
She likes to read while sitting on the porch and enjoying the outdoors. Hank will often join her, regardless of the temperature. While she reads, he sometimes enjoys a good nap.
Margaret also helps arrange and place small flower bouquets on all of the tables in the restaurants and the lounge. “The camaraderie that takes place is really special, and it’s fun to go to dinner and see people enjoying our handiwork.”
While viewing these centerpieces, residents can indulge in exceptional food and beverages. “Residents enjoy both fine and casual dining options, with menus that offer a wide variety of dishes and rotate bi-weekly,” says Tyler Moore, manager of restaurant operations. “We also host special dining events to celebrate every holiday, adding variety and excitement to the experience.”
CONTINUED >
Hank and Margaret appreciate the activities and opportunities to learn new skills and do things that they never had the time to discover earlier in life. They revel in the slower pace of their everyday routines, which have slowed substantially, and they treasure the opportunity that it affords them to simply enjoy each other, their new friends, and their new surroundings.
"Our main focus is creating a well-rounded lifestyle that supports our residents’ physical, emotional, and social well-being,” says Ben Zirkle, HR generalist. “Through enriching activities, various dining options, and a welcoming environment that feels like home, residents are encouraged to stay active and connected."
The couple has also made many new friends. “There is an amazing friendliness and camaraderie and an ease of developing relationships,” says Hank.
One of the things they’re most grateful for is the “great peace of mind and security knowing we don’t have to worry about what happens next,” says Hank. “We have told our two sons that the decision to come to The Heritage is one of the best gifts we could give them.”
They are also looking forward to starting new holiday traditions in their new home. “We haven’t been here long enough to experience a lot of holidays, but you can bet Margaret is already pondering the ways she will use her varied collection of Nativity scenes to decorate our door shelf for Christmas,” he says.
