LIFESTYLE LETTER
A Brighter Beginning
January 2026 PUBLISHER
Amanda Eberstein | amanda.eberstein@citylifestyle.com E D I TO R
January always brings a sense of renewal—a chance to reset, rethink our routines and look ahead with greater intention. Here on the westside, that feeling carries a deeper meaning. It has been one year since the Palisades Fire, a tragedy that reshaped our neighborhoods and tested the spirit of our community. In the months that followed, we watched friends and neighbors rally, rebuild and lift one another up in ways that were both humbling and profound. It’s impossible to enter this new year without honoring that resilience—and acknowledging the difficult road that still lies ahead for so many. With that in mind, our annual Health and Wellness issue is dedicated to the people and places helping us live with purpose and strength—from the inside out. Our cover story shines a light on Dr. Ryan Greene of Monarch Athletic Club, a leader who has reimagined what it means to pursue wellness proactively. Monarch has quickly become a quiet pulse here in Brentwood—an under-the-radar hub where fitness, recovery and medical expertise come together to help people feel not just better, but truly well. It’s no surprise so many readers have found their way there, and I imagine even more will after reading Greene’s inspiring story. Nourishment also takes center stage this month, and there is no better example than Parakeet Café, where healthy cuisine is elevated through joy, color and community. I have personally been deeply moved by founder Carol Roizen Goldwasser’s journey of turning the pain of her daughter’s illness into a thriving business focused on food that is clean, organic and absolutely delicious. Parakeet’s Brentwood café has become a frequent destination for so many of us—a place to grab a latte, reconnect with friends and savor dishes that feel as vibrant as they taste. We also check in with Rachael Blumberg Chiprut of Platefit—a dear friend and wellness expert here in Brentwood—to share her favorite spots around town, and travel to Beverly Hills to visit the world-renowned dental office of Apa Aesthetics. Led by celebrated cosmetic dentist Dr. Michael Apa, the practice takes an artistic, subtle and deeply personal approach to transforming smiles, reminding us that wellness can also be aesthetic, emotional and rooted in how we show up in the world. And for those navigating school, careers or daily life with overwhelm or executive function challenges, New Agenda offers tools, coaching and skills that empower children and adults alike. Here’s to a year of clarity, community and taking care—of ourselves and one another. A M A N DA E B E R S T E I N , P U B L I S H E R @BRENTWOODCITYLIFESTYLE

ARTICLE BY AMANDA EBERSTEIN
Monarch Athletic Club has become Brentwood’s discreet go-to for strength, longevity and life-changing results In Brentwood these days, there’s a quiet buzz moving through the community and a subtle shift taking place. Almost inevitably, conversations about strength, clarity and renewed energy seem to circle back to the same spot. “Oh, I’ve been working out at this place called Monarch,” someone will say with a smile. With no splashy signage or performative culture, Monarch Athletic Club has somehow become the most talked-about yet under-the-radar wellness space for those in-the-know. And at the center of it all is Dr. Ryan Greene, who decided that if the traditional healthcare system wasn’t built to keep people well, then he would build something that was. Greene grew up in Wheaton, Illinois, where his parents instilled a deep work ethic. “We worked hard and were taught that you had to earn your way,” he says. Drawn to both athletics and science, he pursued a master’s degree in exercise physiology, immunology and nutrition at the University of Illinois before fully committing to medicine. The motivation was simple. “Really, what I wanted to do was to help people,” he says. “And I had a passion for really seeing people in their worst moment and helping guide them into living their best quality of life.” But after his clinical training at Dartmouth, he began to sense the limits of a system built around crisis management rather than prevention. “Getting better was not just getting people out of the emergency room,” he says. It was during his fellowship at Mayo Clinic that everything crystallized. Greene noticed elite athletes openly discussing the extraordinary resources they invested each year in longevity and recovery. “If LeBron James has to pay $1 million or more a year to have a team of people, what chance do you and I have if we don’t have a similar team?” he remembers thinking. “The answer is basically zero.” Suddenly, the solution became obvious: everyday people needed access to that same coordinated care—movement,

medicine, nutrition, recovery and data—working in harmony. “The pathway will be revealed, step by step by step,” he says of the vision that began forming. After relocating to Los Angeles, Greene met the hospitality leaders of Noble 33—the group behind Toca Madera, Casa Madera and the original creators and former owners of Tocaya. Together, they fused Greene’s integrated health model with Noble 33’s expertise in elevated, high-touch environments. The first Monarch Athletic Club opened in West Hollywood in January 2020, with Greene serving as co-founder and Medical Director. Two months later, the pandemic arrived. While gyms across Los Angeles went dark, Monarch was miraculously able to remain open because it was licensed as a medical facility. “This allowed us to survive,” Greene says. Members kept coming, progress continued and a community formed almost organically during a moment when connection felt scarce. And the model—once novel—suddenly felt essential. Many of those early clients lived on the westside and soon insisted he expand. “They told me I needed to cross the 405,” he recalls. The Brentwood studio opened in April 2023 in a 9,000-squarefoot ground-floor space—formerly Velocity Sports Performance— located in the medical building attached to Toscana. Greene and his team redesigned it with their signature restraint: bright airiness, thoughtful lines and a functional clarity that avoids excess without sacrificing refinement. Brentwood immediately felt aligned. “It’s people that have been in the area for a long period of time,” Greene says. “They have roots. They tend to know each other, whether it’s through work or kids or activities.” Mornings fill quickly, evenings carry a quiet hum and the hours in between reveal a steady flow of members restructuring their day to make sure they show up. Members receive unlimited personal training, unlimited physical therapy State-of-the-art equipment in the cardio section
A major reason for that consistency is Monarch’s intake process, which sets the tone from the first visit. New members meet with medical, movement and nutrition teams to assemble a comprehensive picture of health. Mobility screenings expose long-standing compensations. “People often learn they haven’t been squatting appropriately for the last 30 years,” Greene says with a laugh. Medical assessment includes bloodwork, hormone analysis, metabolic markers and an in-depth conversation about stress, sleep and lifestyle. Nutrition experts evaluate gut health, sensitivities, eating patterns and energy demands. The result is a 360-degree blueprint that informs every training decision, recovery protocol and goal adjustment. “It is not guesswork, it is precision,” Greene says. What follows is unlike anything else in the health and wellness landscape. Members receive unlimited personal training with credentialed strength and conditioning specialists, unlimited physical therapy and medical sessions that cover preventive care, longevity, hormones, peptides and general medicine. They also receive ongoing nutrition support and access to all recovery amenities, including a sauna, cold plunge and hyperbaric chamber. Each personal training session is a real 50 minutes, and programs refresh every four to six weeks—or are customized for pregnancy, postpartum, injury, travel, competitions or life changes. Select group classes are also offered on Saturdays. “We are going to assess everyone,” Greene says. “And we will go at the pace that they’re comfortable with.” This level of access comes at a significant investment—memberships begin around $1,600 a month—but Monarch quickly reveals its value. Many clients were already spending similar amounts by piecing together personal training, physical therapy, medical visits, labs, nutrition counseling and boutique recovery services across multiple locations. Monarch compresses that entire ecosystem into one coordinated team, under one roof, guided by one plan. Over the past year, Monarch has also evolved into a cultural hub. Its event series, Discourse, brings members together for community-driven gatherings featuring founders, thinkers and innovators. Greene also hosts the Monarch Metamorphosis podcast,

where he highlights remarkable members and wellness leaders from within his orbit. “Relationships run the world,” he says, and Monarch—intentionally or not—has become a place where those relationships begin. The company’s expansion continues thoughtfully. In addition to a newly opened Playa Vista club, upcoming locations include South Beach and Boston, with Pasadena, Scottsdale and a second Miami space in Wynwood underway. Yet growth is not about scale—it’s about intimacy. “We don’t need 10,000 people,” Greene says. “We want it to be something where there’s an emotional connection.” In Brentwood, that connection is already unmistakable. The transformation happening behind Monarch’s modest entrance speaks for itself. Health, Greene believes, is built through quiet consistency, small choices and the decision to show up. “The choice is ultimately ours,” he says. And here in this community, more people than ever are making it a priority. Monarch Athletic Club 11611 San Vicente Blvd., Suite GF4 424-246-9594 monarchathleticclubs.com

Parakeet C afé pr oves that h ealthy, nutr itious food c an b e both c om for ting and elevate d
TAKING FLIGHT ARTICLE BY BETH FRIEDMAN
Situated in a prime spot at the Brentwood Town Center—just steps from the Country Mart on San Vicente—Parakeet Café greets locals each morning with the scent of house-baked pastries, turmeric-ginger lattes and the natural flow of regulars catching up over breakfast. It feels effortlessly warm and welcoming—an all-day café where the food is bright, clean and unmistakably healthy. But for founder Carol Roizen Goldwasser, this beloved neighborhood retreat wasn’t born from a business plan; it was the winding culmination of a deeply personal journey for herself and her family.
An assortment of healthy options at Parakeet Café

Carol grew up in Mexico City in what she describes as “a super small community environment” where everyone knew each other and family and tradition shaped everyday life. She became a lawyer and married her childhood friend, Jonathan Goldwasser, who joined his family’s optical business. Together, they followed a clear path, believing their future was neatly mapped out. Then, nineteen years ago, their second daughter, Michelle, was born. Though she entered the world looking perfectly healthy, she soon began struggling to breathe. Doctors closely monitored her for 21 days, searching unsuccessfully for answers. “I had this new baby that I couldn’t connect with because she was so sick,” Carol recalls. “I couldn’t find a way to comfort her.” An eventual diagnosis of Langerhans cell histiocytosis—a rare disease that causes an overproduction of white blood cells and tumors—sent the young family to Houston in search of specialized care. Michelle began chemotherapy at just six months old, while Carol navigated the fear and disorientation of caring for a newborn who always seemed to be in pain. Meanwhile, something quietly transformative was taking shape. Each week, as Michelle’s bloodwork came back, Carol saw how dramatically her daughter’s numbers shifted depending on what she was fed. When doctors flagged dangerously low iron levels, she went home and cooked purées of spinach and black beans. A week later, the results had improved so much that her doctor was in disbelief. “I became super apprehensive about food and started learning everything that I could,” she says. “I was experiencing firsthand, as cliché as it sounds, its inherent healing power.” Carol’s commitment deepened, and she learned to see meals not just as nourishment but as care, connection and medicine. Eventually, the family moved back to Mexico City, but the altitude and pollution constantly flared Michelle’s respiratory issues, and Carol and her husband realized they were ready for a permanent change. “We decided to move to the States because we wanted a cleaner, healthier, more organic way of life,” she explains. The family chose San Diego, where Carol found herself surprised by how limited the healthy food options were. Together, she and Jonathan decided to build what they wished existed. They opened a small juice bar rooted in Carol’s newfound culinary education, slowly gaining the trust of customers craving something fresher, cleaner and more intentional. As regulars began asking for items beyond juice, the concept evolved naturally into the idea for a full restaurant, and in 2017, Parakeet Café took flight. “I wanted it to be an extension of my kitchen,” Carol says of the initial tiny 700-square-foot shop in La Jolla.

“with the same quality of ingredients that I buy for myself.” That philosophy has become the foundation of every location. Ingredients remain nonnegotiable: seed-oil-free (“I would never cook with something other than olive oil,” she says), organic whole foods, ethically sourced, nothing processed, everything as clean as possible. The menu, once almost entirely vegan, broadened thoughtfully—first vegetarian, then incorporating meats such as pasture-raised poultry and 100 percent grass-fed beef. “Food is not a one-size-fits-all,” she says. “If somebody loves a burger and French fries, I can do roasted potatoes and a grass-fed burger, and that’s better.” Parakeet’s now-signature dishes reflect this ethos: the breakfast burrito that “sells like crazy,” perfected in its simplicity; the aforementioned burger tucked inside a house-baked brioche bun with seed-oil-free aioli; pastries baked with only ingredients “I would use for my kids”; and Carol’s personal favorite, the All I Avo Wanted—a blue-corn waffle topped with avocado, eggs, feta and a housemade salsa macha. The menu continuously evolves. This season’s highlights include a clean, deeply flavorful chicken teriyaki bowl; a crispy grains and salmon bowl with layers of texture; the vegan SoCal Burrito of roasted mushrooms, beans and brown rice; and a wild-caught ahi poke. As Parakeet expanded into a collection of cafés across Southern California—Del Mar, Coronado, Newport Beach, Beverly Hills—Carol remained committed to choosing neighborhoods defined by community. Brentwood, which opened in January
All I Avo Wanted
2024, was a natural fit. “I want to build spaces that are beautiful and that people go to all the time and make their own,” she says, adding that she was drawn to the village-like charm of the area, its walkability and the way people truly take pride in where they live. “I wanted joy and fun and music and color,” she says—an intentional contrast to the fear that marked the early years of her journey. Inside the Brentwood café, that intention is everywhere. The wallpaper is hand-painted by an artist in Tijuana. The cups, bags and packaging are designed with Carol’s signature playfulness. Bright, tropical tones energize the space without overwhelming it. “I appreciate attention to detail,” she says. “I think the customer deserves that.” But it’s also the warmth of the staff and the genuine connection that has made Parakeet a neighborhood staple. “Just a smile, a kind word or knowing a customer’s drink can really shift their day,” she says. Now, with Brentwood thriving and Manhattan Beach on the horizon, Carol and her husband are preparing for the next chapter—expanding with care while staying loyal to the values that began this journey. What started as a mother’s attempt to heal her daughter has become a beloved local gathering place—a café built on joy, nourishment and an unwavering belief that food made with intention can change everything. After having my newborn for a year, I received many gifts: flowers, blankets, beautifully wrapped things.
The best gift, by far, was the expert-led care I received after giving birth. If someone you love is entering the fourth trimester, give them the kind of support that truly makes a difference.

AT APA AESTHETIC, ARTISTRY, INNOVATION AND INDIVIDUALITY USHER IN A NEW ERA OF MODERN COSMETIC DENTISTRY
Dr. Michael Apa
ARTICLE BY AMANDA EBERSTEIN
PURE
BRILLIANCE In a city where a confident smile can say so much, few have shaped the conversation quite like Apa Aesthetic. Founded by renowned cosmetic dentist Dr. Michael Apa in 2015, the globally recognized practice—now with studios in New York, Dubai, Miami and Los Angeles—has redefined modern dentistry through a careful blend of science, artistry and design. Apa’s approach is as much about how a smile feels as how it looks, inviting patients to discover a version of themselves that feels both natural and elevated. “We began as a dental office and pretty quickly became an international brand with a simple promise: restored teeth that look like teeth,” says Apa.

Born and raised in upstate New York, Apa knew early on that he wanted to pursue dentistry. He studied at New York University College of Dentistry, where as an alumnus he later founded the school’s first undergraduate aesthetics program and established a clinical education space that bears his name. From the beginning, his mission has been as much about experience as results, grounded in a belief that beauty should never erase individuality. In an era of over-edited perfection, Apa’s approach feels like a welcome departure—celebrating nuance, proportion and authenticity instead of symmetry alone. His work is instantly recognizable for those in the know, not because it looks “done,” but because it doesn’t. This design-first philosophy comes to life inside the Los Angeles location, which opened in 2019 as the practice’s third global studio. Set within a discreet, state-of-the-art medical building in the heart of Beverly Hills, the space feels closer to a gallery than a clinic. An arched Barrisol light frames the entryway, while the front desk is anchored by a smooth Corian countertop floating above Apa’s signature Terrazzo flooring. Seven operatories surround a cutting-edge glass-walled laboratory, where visitors can observe Apa’s highly skilled artisans meticulously crafting porcelain veneers by hand. CONTINUED >

The Los Angeles office also showcases Apa’s rotating personal art collection, as well as his line of oral care cosmetics, Apa Beauty. High-end amenities reinforce the luxury experience: cashmere Brunello Cucinelli blankets, neck pillows, CBD gumdrops, nitrous oxide, signature room diffusers, Bose noise-canceling headphones, ceiling-mounted screens for entertainment and more. “It’s essentially a spa,” says Apa’s Los Angeles associate, Dr. Charles Glaser. “Every detail reflects luxury and care. But beyond that, it’s about creating a place where patients feel valued and at ease.” It’s that philosophy that has drawn an impressive roster of high-profile clients. Jennifer Lopez, most of the Kardashian/Jenner clan, Uma Thurman, Chris Appleton, Ashley Olsen, Emma Roberts, Rachel Zoe and Simon Cowell are among the bold-faced names who trust Apa Aesthetic for its refined, natural results. Yet for all its star power, the brand’s allure lies in something subtler: discretion. Apa and his team don’t post walls of celebrity photos or reveal names without permission. The patients who come here—from CEOs to Hollywood stars to regular local families—are drawn not only to the craftsmanship, but to the respect. To lead the Los Angeles studio, Dr. Apa hand-selected a highly qualified group of associates, including Dr. Glaser, a Southern California native whose detaildriven artistry perfectly mirrors the brand’s ethos.

“EVERY VENEER IS DESIGNED TO COMPLEMENT A PATIENT’S FEATURES AND SKIN TONE FOR A NATURAL, H A R MONIOU S R E S ULT.” Like Apa, Glaser is a graduate of New York University College of Dentistry, where they first crossed paths. “I immediately saw him as a mentor and role model. He’s the next generation of cosmetic dentistry,” Glaser says. “When I was moving back to LA, there happened to be an opening in his practice, and it really felt like the stars aligned.” Although the office does offer more basic dental work, porcelain veneers remain the cornerstone of Apa Aesthetic. Each set is hand-crafted by master ceramists recruited from around the world—from Brazil and South America to Europe and Korea—all working side by side in the practice’s striking glass laboratory. “It’s truly bespoke,” Glaser says. “Every veneer is designed to complement a patient’s features and skin tone for a natural, harmonious result.” The process, typically four carefully scheduled appointments that take place over three weeks—the amount of time needed to complete the construction of a full set of

Between visits, Glaser and his team obsess over the smallest refinements—the way light moves across enamel, the translucency at the edge of a tooth, the way a smile changes in motion. “It has to look real and function flawlessly,” says Glaser, who was always artistically inclined and knew he wanted to become a dentist from a young age. While the results speak for themselves, what truly sets Apa Aesthetic apart is its commitment to integrity and innovation. The team practices conservative dentistry, preserving as much of the natural tooth as possible while still achieving breathtaking results. “We are sculpting teeth precisely, not aggressively,” Glaser says. “It’s about honesty, integrity and results that look natural. Patients should never walk out looking like they ‘got
their teeth done.’ It’s still them, just elevated.” And although the goal for many patients may start as cosmetic, the transformation almost always manifests in other ways. “Veneers aren’t just about vanity,” Glaser says. “They can restore oral health, improve bite function and enhance confidence.” For Los Angeles’ discerning residents, Apa Aesthetic represents something rare: a sanctuary where artistry, discretion and wellness converge. “The work is physically and mentally demanding, but it’s all worth it when you see the gratitude and confidence in someone’s face,” Glaser says. “That moment of transformation— it’s why we do what we do.” Apa Aesthetic 9400 Brighton Way, Suite 301, Beverly Hills 310-601-4288 apaaesthetic.com JANUARY 2 0 2 6 | C I TYL I FE STYL E . Nutrient-Rich Dessert To The Rescue ARTICLE BY MEL BOBAN
SWEETS The beginning of the year is packed with inspiration and motivation to get back on track after a sweet-filled holiday season. It can feel extreme, and it also can be depleting to cut oneself off from everything indulgent after weeks of eating favorite sweet and savory recipes. For sugar lovers who believe going cold-turkey feels intimidating or overwhelming, nutrition-packed desserts are a great way to stick to healthy food goals without the guilt.
This recipe is a classic favorite. If you cut the bars into 16 pieces, they are around 270 calories each. They are very filling, packed with healthy goodies and taste oh so delicious. If you can’t finish them yourself (it makes a lot!), bring samples along to your next workout class to share the love. Your accountability group will be asking you for the recipe! These come in handy for a quick breakfast on-the-go or an afternoon snack. You’ll want to taste these out of the oven once they cool a bit... simply scrumptious. Combine: • 1 cup wheat flour • 2 cups cooked quinoa, cooled • 2 cups oats • 2/3 cup of your choice of chopped nuts

Add this mixture slowly to combine: • 2 eggs • 2/3 cup peanut butter, almond butter or sunflower butter • 1/2 cup honey • 1 banana • 1 teaspoon vanilla Bake at 375 degrees for 20 minutes, or until the edges get golden brown. Transforming Lives for the New Year

While ADHD, dyslexia and other neurodiverse learner patterns are often discussed in early education, there is far less conversation—and even less support—around how these remarkably common challenges continue to affect individuals throughout their lives. It’s a gap that Amie Davies and Maria DelCorso understand deeply. As founders of New Agenda, the sought-after pair brings a thoughtful, empowering approach to people of all ages—from students and young adults to parents, families and working professionals—who struggle with executive function skills related to these neurodiverse profiles. From their office in Santa Monica, as well as through virtual coaching for clients near and far, Davies and DelCorso provide individualized executive function coaching designed to strengthen core skills such as organization, time management, planning, task initiation and emotional regulation. “This also helps with a greater self-awareness and independence in managing daily responsibilities and academic or work demands, as well as improved emotional regulation and social processing for problem solving and relationships,” Davies explains. As we step into January, the duo shares their top five tips for starting the new year with a plan.
1. TIME MANAGEMENT
Work on time estimation to understand how long tasks truly take, then use time blocking—dividing the day into structured blocks—to set aside designated periods for focus. These tools offer a clearer sense of pace and help to reduce the overwhelm that often comes with open-ended activities.
2. TASK INITIATION
Try body doubling—working side-by-side with someone in person or virtually—to overcome the initial hurdle of starting a task. This calm and reliable presence helps spark momentum, increases accountability, leverages social facilitation and reduces overwhelm.
3. EMOTIONAL REGULATION
Practice slow, deep breathing during moments of frustration or stress. This simple reset can support clearer thinking and emotional control, especially for individuals who may experience feelings more intensely or have difficulty pausing before reacting.
4. TASK LISTS
Task lists help children, students and adults build structure—whether for morning routines, homework or managing unstructured time with growing responsibilities. They also reduce cognitive load, giving the brain a clear roadmap instead of relying on memory.
5. FOCUS
Use structured techniques like the Pomodoro Method—alternating intervals of focused work with short breaks to maintain energy and attention. This rhythm works especially well for neurodiverse learners who benefit from predictable cycles of engagement and rest.
