Holiday of Hope

This December carries a weight unlike most others. For so many in our community, the holidays this year are not just about joy and sparkle but about resilience in the face of loss. The January fires that swept through our neighborhoods left a deep impact, and for many of our friends, neighbors and even ourselves, this season can feel heavy and bittersweet, a reminder of what has been lost as well as what still binds us together.

In that spirit, I am beyond humbled to feature an exclusive interview with Rick Caruso in this issue. A longtime Brentwood resident, Caruso has led with strength and vision in the aftermath of the devastation, helping the Palisades to not only rebuild but reimagine its future. This year’s tree and menorah lightings and other holiday celebrations at Palisades Village—miraculously returning under Caruso’s stewardship—are more than just festivities, they are symbols of hope and strength. I am so honored to have Mr. Caruso part of this magazine and can’t wait for you all to read his inspiring story.

This issue also includes our annual holiday gift guide, a curated collection of local finds that remind us how essential it is to shop small and support our neighborhood businesses. Each gift represents more than an object—it’s a vote of confidence in the community we love, and a way to keep Brentwood and our surrounding areas thriving. I am so proud as always to highlight so many of our incredible partners, such as Ann and Sid Mashburn, Capitol, Capsule Shop, Permanent Vacation, Peter Norman Jewelers, Sophie Dance, Wilshire LED Lighting, Artkive, Saatchi Art and Palisades Gift Shop, which is opening a holiday pop-up by the Brentwood Country Mart.

For those seeking a touch of glamour this season, La Monique, the new restaurant at the Oceana Santa Monica offers an unforgettable escape—a French jewel box where the elegance of the Riviera meets the spirit of the Pacific. And for those in need of support through the busiest time of year, Claudia Kahn and The Help Company can make just about anything possible, from household staffing to caregiving and beyond. We also feature Patricia Taft—a frequent writer for the magazine who just launched a new podcast—and Svoya Beauty Studio, where a fresh look becomes an act of self-care and celebration.

As the year draws to a close, my hope is that this issue brings both comfort and inspiration. Whether through stories of leadership, acts of kindness or simply a perfect holiday gift found close to home, may we all find ways to give and receive and spread a little light this season. Happy holidays to all.

As a commentator, writer, interior designer and entrepreneur, Patricia Taft carries forward the legacy of her family name with a distinctly modern voice. The great-granddaughter of President William Howard Taft and granddaughter of Senator Robert A. Taft, she has carved out her own space at the intersection of politics, culture and contemporary life, serving on the Membership Nominating Committee for the National Women’s Suffrage Monument and on the boards of both the National First Ladies Day initiative and the Society of Presidential Descendants. These experiences serve as the inspiration for her latest endeavor, The Political Nepo Baby Podcast, which launched last month. “I knew I had a voice and unique perspective,” Taft says. “The podcast explores politics and culture through the lens of a biracial millennial mom—hopefully with humor and curiosity.” Living in the Santa Monica flats with her husband, two daughters and their French bulldog, Taft finds joy in the community’s balance of beauty, drive and groundedness—as well as what she calls the “quintessential childhood of beaches, parks, scooters and dance classes.” Here, a few of Taft’s favorite local spots.

“I do not always say ‘yes’ to a toy—but always to a book—and Zibby’s Bookshop makes that ‘yes’ feel special every time. With its East Coast charm and knowledgeable, welcoming staff, it’s a neighborhood gem that transforms simple strolls into home library expansions.”

FRENCH JEWEL

La Monique's

LA MONIQUE BRINGS A CERTAIN JE NE SAIS QUOI TO THE OCEANA HOTEL

Santa Monica has seen its share of glamorous restaurant openings in the past year or so—from Muse in Rustic Canyon to Orla at Regent Santa Monica Beach to the buzzy westside outpost of San Vicente Bungalows. Now, La Monique—a gorgeous jewel-box French brasserie with the air of an intimate Riviera private members’ club—has entered the scene.

The restaurant is located within the Oceana Santa Monica—an ivy-covered all-suite hotel overlooking the Pacific that is owned by real estate developer and Brentwood resident Jim Lippman of JRK Property Holdings. His wife Linda, and their three children, daughter Alex Landy and brothers Danny and Matthew, are all involved in the business and have created La Monique in partnership with 34th Floor of Schulte Hospitality Group— envisioning it to be a modern clubhouse of sorts, with an intimate setting, maximalist design and flawless cuisine.

“La Monique reflects our vision for Oceana as a gathering place that is as

relevant to the Santa Monica community as it is to our guests,” says Landy, who lives in Brentwood with her husband and three children and serves as the executive vice president of JRK.

Tucked off the lobby, the restaurant reveals itself in cinematic fashion. Guests enter through a small reception and find themselves in a transformative Old World space where Hollywood Regency style reigns. Designed by British-based Martin Brudnizki Design Studio—known for the recent makeovers of Eden Rock in St. Barths and Annabel’s in London—the room glows with emerald malachite walls, hand-crafted straw marquetry, antique mirrored ceilings

An impressive assortment of art
“THIS NEW RESTAURANT ELEVATES THE PROPERTY WHILE OFFERING GUESTS AND LOCALS A TRULY IMMERSIVE AND MEMORABLE DINING EXPERIENCE.”

and a curated mix of impressive art ranging from historic photography to contemporary works. Velvet banquettes, a smattering or romantic two-top tables and a glowing backlit bar complete the scene, conjuring intimacy with a touch of decadence.

The menu, overseen by French chef David Fricaud—who worked in Michelin-starred kitchens and was a Top Chef France semi-finalist—delivers the same spirit of creativity and indulgence. Escargot poppers are fried crisp and served outside the shells, then paired with crème fraîche, garlic and parsnip meant to be taken as a shot after each delicious morsel. The mini onion soup and grilled cheese sandwiches stuffed with brie and Tomme de Savoie on mushroom brioche would be a perfect snack with a vesper

or glass of pinot noir on a brisk evening, but if you are dining at a table, save room for the Jyan Isaac baguette (from the famed Santa Monica bakery), which is served on a wooden board with several schmears of French butter.

While there is Petrossian caviar and an ample seafood tower, Fricaud has inserted a pasta section as a nod to his days cooking at Scarpetta in Las Vegas—his favorite being a simple spaghetti pomodoro with crushed San Marzano tomato sauce. “We receive fresh pasta every day from The Cheese Store in Beverly Hills,” Fricaud says. “Along with many of the cheese selections.”

The menu also features a notable selection of steaks, including A5 Wagyu Ichibo cut from Japan (and yes, steak frites),

followed by main dishes that include the showstopping Le Grand Poulet with truffle jus. This whole roasted chicken is presented tableside in the pot—where it has been seared and simmering low and slow for hours after an overnight baste of butter, olive oil, thyme and lemon—before it’s carved up and served in individual smaller skillets. The dish easily serves two or possibly four depending on how many starters are ordered as it also comes with roasted fingerling potatoes, and you might want to add macaroni au fromage with béchamel sauce or grilled broccolini. For dessert, sticky toffee Madeleines with Chantilly cream deliver a playful finale.

The inventive cocktail program also matches the menu’s flair. The Pacific Loot— lavender-infused tequila served in a miniature treasure chest—feels both whimsical and luxe, while Cinema Paradiso mixes rye whiskey with chocolate bitters, popcorn syrup and Coca-Cola foam. And for those seeking a more casual or kid-family experience, Le Petit Monique offers alfresco poolside dining complete with family staples like burgers and occasional live music.

“This new restaurant marks a transformative moment for the hotel, a fresh chapter that elevates the property while offering guests and locals a truly immersive and memorable dining experience,” says Landy. La Monique may be tucked discreetly within Oceana, but once discovered, it feels like Santa Monica’s most glamorous secret—where Riviera style, inventive cuisine and westside community converge in one sparkling gem.

THE PERFECT MATCH

Walk through Brentwood Village and it’s almost certain someone will stop Claudia Kahn to say hello. “It really does feel like a small town, and I feel so lucky to be part of it,” she says. As the founder of The Help Company, Kahn has been the one families call when they need the best—nannies, chefs, assistants, estate managers, gardeners or simply an extra set of hands. And in the process, Kahn herself has become a true Brentwood institution.

Claudia Kahn of The Help Company has spent decades connecting families and caregivers with compassion and community
Claudia Kahn of The Help Company
“I wanted someone like me, and they just weren’t out there. So I started looking on my own.”

Her journey here wasn’t straightforward. “I grew up in Ohio, went to college in Arizona and followed my roommate west to LA,” Kahn says. “I never went back.” After stints in fashion, real estate and food, her life changed when she married and had her son, Andrew. Like so many mothers, Kahn needed childcare she could trust but quickly realized there was no easy way to find the kind of caregiver she envisioned— someone who would read with her child, nurture him and become part of the family.

“I wanted someone like me, and they just weren’t out there,” she recalls. “So I started looking on my own.” In 1983, Kahn placed an ad in The Lady, a London newspaper known for its traditional governess listings. “I had a hundred responses,” she says. After finding the ideal candidate for her own son, Kahn decided it was time to help others. She borrowed $3,000 from her parents and started placing caregivers for other families. “I had no idea what I was doing, but it just took off,” Kahn says. “The phone never stopped ringing.” The Wall Street

Journal soon profiled her fledgling company, at the time called Baby Buddies, which would later become The Help Company.

Today, Kahn’s business has become LA’s foremost private staffing agency, with headquarters in Brentwood Village and satellite offices in San Francisco and New York. However, its heart remains the same. “We are not transactional,” Kahn insists. “It’s matchmaking. I want to know how people really live, so I can place someone who is the right fit. It has to come from the heart.” That approach has earned her the trust of celebrities, CEOs and multi-generational families alike. “I listen. I care. And I think people feel that,” she says.

The scope of The Help Company’s offerings is expansive. What started with childcare has grown to include estate managers, private chefs, baby nurses, executive assistants, housekeepers, gardeners, handymen—“really anyone who helps a household run,” Kahn explains. The office is overseen by Kahn’s small but fiercely loyal

team of women, many of whom have been with her for more than 15 years. “We’re like a family,” she says. On any given day, résumés are stacked on desks, phones ring constantly and interviews are conducted with everyone from first-time nannies to seasoned professionals. “We probably interview 50 or 60 people a week, and maybe one or two are the right fit,” she says. “That’s why people trust us.”

Kahn’s influence has quietly shaped some of Los Angeles’ most dynamic careers. Years ago, a young chef named Travis Lett came to her at just 25, with dreams of opening a restaurant. “I placed him in a home where he could make some money and build his craft,” she recalls. “Five years later, he opened Gjelina.” Another chef, Natasha Price, just opened her first restaurant, Wilde’s, in Los Feliz. And a nanny Kahn placed with a well-known celebrity returned years later and told her she wanted to switch paths and do something that would make a difference in the world. Under Kahn’s encouragement, she got into Harvard, earned a degree in Urban Planning and founded the Kounkuey Design Initiative (KDI), a nonprofit that builds equitable public spaces in underserved communities around the world. “I’ve been on the board since they started and helped fund her first trip to Africa,” Kahn says. “Now she’s teaching at Harvard, UCLA and USC.”

Kahn’s own life in Brentwood has always been part of the story. After getting divorced when her son was very young, Kahn moved to Brentwood and met her now husband of more than 30 years, London-born Anthony Foux, on the tennis court at The Riviera Country Club. The two live in a storybook country estate in Mandeville Canyon. “My husband built the house,” she says. “It’s where we love to entertain. I have a big table out back and nothing makes me happier than filling it with friends.” Kahn herself is a talented cook, golfer and potter (she installed a kiln and studio in the backyard). Foux, a former investment banker, still plays tennis and golf and acts in local plays. Kahn’s son Andrew, who attended Crossroads

School, is grown now, but the school community was formative. “When your kid is young, that becomes your whole village,” she says.

Kahn’s day-to-day is rooted in the neighborhood. “I walk to the Country Mart and love Vicente Foods more than anything in the world,” she says. “I know everyone at the market, including all of the housekeepers.” That community connection is also what drives her philanthropy. A longtime supporter of Human Rights Watch, she has been a vocal advocate for domestic workers’ rights. After the Palisades Fire, when many locals lost their homes and their staff lost jobs, she quickly set up a Go Fund Me to support workers. “We just wanted to help families and the people who work for them,” she says.

The holidays are one of the busiest times at The Help Company. “People call for everything—temp nannies, housekeepers, private chefs for parties,” Kahn says. “Sometimes it’s the whole Thanksgiving dinner or Christmas Eve celebration. Sometimes it’s just a little extra help because the grandkids are visiting.”

At 42 years strong, The Help Company is more than just a business—it’s a legacy. This December, as families prepare for gatherings, Kahn is doing what she has always done: connecting people with kindness and advocating for those who care for our homes.

GUIDING LIGHT

With steadfast leadership and a spirit of giving, Rick Caruso helps bring joy—and tradition—back to the Palisades this holiday season

Rick Caruso and his dog Hudson at least year's Palisades Village tree lighting ceremony

On that fateful night in January when the flames swept through Pacific Palisades, Rick Caruso stood not only as a civic leader, but as a father and neighbor. The devastation was personal—his own children lost homes, cherished places were reduced to ash and the community that he had poured so much of himself into was left broken. “Like everyone, it’s been a very challenging, difficult time,” Caruso says. “It’s especially frustrating now that we know the fire could have been prevented. Tens of thousands of people lost homes and jobs. People died. But I’m optimistic. We’re going to keep working hard, along with a lot of other good people, to rebuild.” Even in those dark days, he says, the thought of shared traditions—holidays, celebrations, the simple rituals that bring people together—reminded him of why the work of rebuilding mattered so deeply.

For Caruso, a longtime resident of Brentwood, the loss struck at the very heart of what has always defined westside life: community. More than three decades ago, he and his wife, Tina, chose Brentwood to raise their four children because of its low-key, unpretentious spirit. “It just felt right,” he recalls. “It was local, neighborly, comfortable. Clean and safe—at least then, but we are going to fix that— with a family vibe. It turned out to be a great place to raise a family.” That belief in the power of neighborhood ties guided his decision to invest in the Palisades years later, transforming a then run-down corner of Sunset and Swarthmore into Palisades Village—a walkable, open-air shopping and dining destination that opened in 2018 and would become the heart of the town.

“When I first bought the property, it didn’t reflect the quality of the community,” Caruso recalls. “I knew there was an opportunity to build something special—a true gathering place. That’s exactly what it became. Kids met there after school, parents gathered and it turned into the community center we had hoped for.”

The Palisades Fire only deepened his conviction. Rather than retreat, Caruso leaned into his instinct for service, drawing on a lifetime of civic commitment. The grandson of Italian immigrants, Caruso grew up in Los Angeles watching his father build Dollar Rent A Car, learning resilience and enterprise. After attending undergrad at USC and law school at Pepperdine, Caruso rose quickly in public service, becoming the youngest Commissioner in the history of Los Angeles at the Department of Water and Power. Later, as President of the Los Angeles Police Commission, he helped bring crime to a fifty-year low. Alongside Tina, he has long invested in philanthropy through the Caruso Family Foundation, supporting children’s health and education. For Caruso, giving back has never been a sideline—it’s been a throughline of his life, shaping both his business and his personal mission.

Immediately in the wake of the fire, Caruso and his wife made a $5 million lead gift to launch a campaign that raised $20 million in a single week to support the Los Angeles Fire Department. From that

“IT’S BEEN A VERY DIFFICULT TIME. BUT I’M OPTIMISTIC. WE’RE GOING TO KEEP WORKING HARD, ALONG WITH A LOT OF OTHER GOOD PEOPLE, TO REBUILD.”

effort grew Steadfast LA, the nonprofit Caruso founded to accelerate recovery. “It was clear that the disaster was too big for the government alone. We needed public-private partnerships,” he explains. “So I started Steadfast, bringing together some of the most talented people in town to donate their time and skills. Our goal is to partner with the city, county and state to get people back in their communities as quickly and safely as possible.”

Already, Steadfast LA has provided small business grants of up to $50,000 in the Palisades and Altadena, is working to deliver modular homes to displaced families and launched an AI plan check tool to cut permitting times from months to weeks. In partnership with Lakers coach JJ Redick and his organization, LA Strong Sports Foundation, Caruso is leading the redesign of the Palisades Recreation Center, recently hosting a packed community meeting that drew more than 400 neighbors. “It was full of hope and excitement,” Caruso recalls. “The goal is to start construction early next year and reopen within about a year.”

Looking ahead, the highly anticipated reopening of Palisades Village is scheduled for August 2026, a moment Caruso views as both practical and deeply symbolic. Anchoring the relaunch will be the flagship Elyse Walker store, a homecoming for one of the community’s most beloved retailers, who lost her longtime boutique in the fire. “Elyse is one of the best people I know—just an incredibly good person,” Caruso says. “She raised her kids in the Palisades, and her roots run deep there. She’s also one of the best retail merchants in the country. When we thought about how to make Palisades Village even better, she was the first person who came to mind.”

Yet for Caruso, rebuilding isn’t only about bricks and mortar—it’s also about spirit. Even as businesses remain shuttered, he has insisted that holiday traditions go on. On December 6th, the iconic Christmas tree in Palisades Village will once again sparkle to life during a beautiful community ceremony, followed by a Hanukkah celebration and nightly menorah lightings beginning on December 14th. “Even this year, we’ll celebrate our Christmas tree lighting like always, even though nothing will be open,” Caruso says. “We’ll also do our menorah lighting. The sooner we can get back to normalcy, the better. These traditions are important. I don’t want kids missing out. Most of all, we need to give people hope.” In a year of profound loss, these moments promise something more lasting than commerce: the reassurance that community endures. That devotion to joy and connection extends beyond the Palisades. At Rosewood Miramar Beach in Montecito, Caruso has prepared another season of dazzling décor, with jaw-dropping adornments and a beautiful Christmas tree greeting guests in the lobby. New Chanel and Jacquemus boutiques join the resort’s beloved holiday festivities, which Caruso sees as essential expressions of gratitude. The same spirit carries to The Grove, where its legendary tree, music and snowfall have become part of the city’s holiday tradition, drawing families from across Los Angeles, and the world. “I love celebrating life,” Caruso says. “Having a grateful heart and celebrating faith and family is important to me. Decorating is a way of sharing joy with the community.”

Locals gathered around Palisades Village's beloved Christmas tree

“MOST OF ALL, WE NEED TO GIVE PEOPLE HOPE.”

Back in Brentwood, where the Caruso family home glows with festive lights each December, neighbors still stop by with their children to admire the display. Caruso often thinks back to the simple pleasures of raising his own family here: Redi-Chick, Amici and Joan’s Candy Store— local touchstones that defined his kids’ childhoods and anchored his love for the neighborhood. For him, Brentwood and the Palisades are more than just places. They are part of the fabric of his life. As speculation swirls about future political aspirations, Caruso says he hasn’t ruled anything out. “I love public service, and I want to give back to my community and my state,” he says. “I will make a decision soon.” However, for now he remains focused on the immediate work ahead: helping his neighbors heal and ensuring that the Palisades rises from the ashes stronger than before. “Los Angeles is a great city going through a tough time, but it will come back,” he says. “The Palisades is a beautiful community, and it will be restored. Let’s all work together and stay hopeful.”

Holiday Glow

The holidays bring a whirlwind of parties, family gatherings and festive photos—and nothing feels better than stepping into the season looking radiant and confident. At Svoya Beauty Studio, located in the heart of Brentwood, sisters Maryna Trylevych and Iryna Moser have created a cozy, family-run beauty destination that blends European expertise with the latest technologies. “At Svoya, we believe that beauty should feel effortless. It’s about enhancing your natural features in a way that gives you confidence every day,” says Moser. “The holidays are such a special time, and a little self-care before the season starts can help you feel truly ready to enjoy every moment.” Here, the Svoya team shares their top five treatments to prep for the festive season—each designed to help you glow, smooth and shine just in time to celebrate.

1. AWARD-WINNING PERMANENT MAKEUP

Achieve brows, lips and eyeliner that last through late nights and early mornings with Svoya Beauty Studio’s world-class permanent makeup services. Co-founder Trylevych is internationally recognized for her artistry—her award-winning techniques and years of experience have made her a trusted choice for discerning clients seeking a flawless yet natural look. You’ll look photo-ready from morning brunches to New Year’s Eve parties—no touch-ups required. It’s the ultimate time-saver for a busy festive schedule.

2. HYDRAFACIAL GLOW

Hollywood’s favorite facial delivers instant radiance by cleansing, exfoliating and hydrating in one luxurious session. Skin is left smooth, plump and glowing—with instant results and zero downtime, making this the ideal boost before family photos, holiday parties or travel.

3. LASH AND BROW LIFT

This dynamic duo enhances your natural lashes and shapes brows to perfection. The result is an effortlessly polished, awake look that lasts up to six weeks. With no mascara or brow gel needed, you can look fresh and put-together through all of the holiday chaos—from school events to office parties.

4. SKIN RENEWAL WITH CHEMICAL PEELS

Winter is peel season! Professional peels at Svoya Beauty Studio gently exfoliate dull skin, fade pigmentation and smooth fine lines, revealing a healthy, even glow. This service is one of the best ways to reset tired skin before winter festivities—revealing a luminous, smooth complexion that looks incredible in photos (and under twinkling lights).

5. BODY CONTOURING WITH VENUS LEGACY

For those wanting to look and feel their best in holiday outfits, Venus Legacy body contouring is a wonderful option. Using advanced radio frequency and pulsed magnetic fields, it helps tighten skin, reduce cellulite and sculpt the body naturally. This is a confidence-boosting treatment that helps you slip into your favorite dress or festive outfit feeling toned, sleek and camera-ready.
