FEATURING BRETT CHODY OF BRETT’S BITES AND THE MODERN PLAYERS RESHAPING THE LOCAL BREAKFAST SCENE

PLUS OUR ANNUAL INVESTMENT ISSUE: HEALTH, HOME, FAMILY, COMMUNITY AND THE MOMENTS THAT MATTER MOST

Planting the Seeds

April always feels like a reset, as we usher in the start of spring. The light changes, days feel softer and there is a quiet sense of new beginnings and the chance to refocus—with intention. This month’s Investment issue isn’t just about money. It’s about where we choose to devote our time, energy and heart. Because the most meaningful returns in life aren’t measured on paper—they’re felt in how we live and who we’re with.

Take, for example, Indya Yuill of Beacon Pointe, a trusted advisor guiding families through some of life’s most important decisions. Indya brings both expertise and empathy to her work, shaped not only by years in finance but by her life here in Brentwood as a mother raising young children. She understands that wealth is never just about numbers—it is about creating stability, clarity and confidence during the years when life feels fullest and most complex. Her thoughtful, deeply personal approach reflects a broader truth: true investment is about protecting what matters most.

That idea took on even deeper meaning for me when I experienced ReloomVR for the first time. This groundbreaking technology captures weddings, bar mitzvahs and milestone celebrations in fully immersive virtual reality, allowing families to step back inside their most meaningful moments long after they have passed. The experience is powerful, emotional and unexpectedly moving. After the fires reminded so many families how fragile physical memories can be, preserving these moments feels profoundly important. It’s no surprise that some of LA’s most respected event planners, including Mindy Weiss, are already devoted fans.

This issue also explores the quieter, more personal side of investment. In our spring reading feature, local entrepreneurs and authors Emma Grede, Cleo Wade and Dr. Deepika Chopra invite us to look inward—toward discipline, resilience and intentional growth. Meanwhile, renowned aesthetician Vanessa Hernandez of VH Skincare approaches her work with the belief that consistency and care compound over time, while Brentwood Country Club’s PGA pro Cameron Robinson reflects on golf as a lifelong practice rooted in patience, discipline and perspective.

And throughout the neighborhood, even the most familiar rituals are evolving. Brentwood’s beloved bagel culture is experiencing new life, as a classic breakfast staple becomes a daily gathering point. For me, this story feels especially personal— PopUp Bagels originated in my hometown of Westport, Connecticut, and seeing it here in Brentwood brings me back to my own childhood mornings at my favorite local spot, Gold's Delicatessen. It’s a reminder of how food, ritual and memory quietly shape who we are—and how the smallest traditions often carry the deepest meaning. Enjoy the issue.

Indya Yuill of Beacon Pointe Advisors helps families navigate complex financial decisions with clarity, coordination and long-term perspective

STRENGTH IN NUMBERS

Indya Yuill spends her days helping families make some of the most important decisions of their lives—how to grow, protect and thoughtfully steward their wealth. As a partner and managing director at Beacon Pointe, one of the largest registered investment advisors (RIA) and private wealth management firms in the United States, Yuill leads the firm’s Los Angeles office in Brentwood and oversees a satellite office in Montecito. With a background in investment and portfolio management, she and her team design extensive financial strategies, coordinating closely with estate attorneys, CPAs and other trusted advisors to guide families through every stage of their financial journeys. “My team and I create comprehensive financial plans and act as the central coordinator among our clients’ advisors,” Yuill explains. “As wealth grows, that coordination becomes increasingly important. When paired with disciplined investment management, it brings structure and intentionality to every financial decision.” Education is central to her work. “When clients understand financial markets and personal finance concepts, they gain confidence, clarity and control,” Yuill says. “I’m especially passionate about helping women feel informed and empowered—while ensuring every family member is engaged and confident in the plan.”

Indya Yuill

Outside the office, Yuill is something many Brentwood families instantly relate to—a local mom navigating the rhythm of everyday life.

Originally from Australia, Yuill moved to San Diego during high school before attending the University of Southern California, where her path toward finance and investment began to take shape. Today, she and her husband, Braden, are raising their young family in Brentwood, a community to which they feel deeply connected. She is mother to Jett, 6, and Gemma, 3, and can often be found at the Country Mart, grabbing coffee at La La Land, enjoying dinner at Ospi (the meatballs are a favorite) or pushing through a Megaformer class—where, she laughs, “the classes never get easier.”

That balance—between sophisticated financial expertise and real-life motherhood—is what shapes Yuill’s approach to wealth planning: thoughtful, practical and grounded in what families truly value. Because for Yuill, wealth has

never been simply about numbers—it is about creating security, confidence and opportunity, and helping families build a future that feels not only financially strong, but deeply aligned with the life they truly want to live. Here, Yuill presents some of her top tips.

ADVICE OVER PRODUCTS: MODERN WEALTH PLANNING IS HOLISTIC

“The wealth management industry has evolved from a stockbroker model—where advisors were focused on buying and selling investments—to a holistic advisory model,” Yuill says. “Families don’t need someone selling them a product. They need a personalized strategy that helps them feel confident about where they’re headed.” To do this, she looks at the full financial picture. “We need to understand everything—assets, real estate, liabilities, income, expenses—because every investment decision has tax consequences,” Yuill explains.

CONTINUED >

Yuill with her husband, Braden, and their two kids

“That’s why we stay in constant communication with clients’ CPAs and estate attorneys. Over time, our conversations often shift toward tax planning and minimizing annual liabilities.”

NAVIGATING COMPLEXITY: COORDINATION MATTERS MOST IN LIFE’S BUSIEST YEARS

For many Brentwood families, the most important financial decisions happen not at the beginning or the end—but in the middle. Careers peak, children grow, parents age and priorities compete for time and attention. “The biggest financial mistakes we see don’t come from market volatility—they come from disconnected decisions,” Yuill says. “Many families have a CPA, an estate attorney, retirement accounts and investments, but no unified strategy tying everything together. Our role is to act as the quarterback—seeing the full picture and helping families make thoughtful, coordinated decisions.” During these years of complexity, clarity matters more

than ever. “Financial confidence doesn’t come from knowing stock tickers,” Yuill explains. “It comes from understanding your plan, your priorities and your long-term direction. That’s what allows families to stay calm, disciplined and tune out financial noise.”

INVESTING IN TODAY’S MARKETS: HOW PORTFOLIOS HAVE EVOLVED

“The way we manage investments has changed significantly—and for the better,” Yuill says. “A traditional 60/40 portfolio once meant stocks and bonds. Today, that equity portion can include private equity, venture capital, real estate and infrastructure. The fixed-income side now includes private lending opportunities with higher yields.” Access has improved dramatically, Yuill notes. “These opportunities used to require very high minimums and fees. Today they are more accessible, allowing families to build diversified portfolios aligned with long-term goals.”

The Los Angeles Beacon Pointe team

THE HUMAN SIDE OF WEALTH: SHARED UNDERSTANDING MATTERS

“Regardless of the dollar amount, the real magic happens when both partners understand the plan,” Yuill says. “Sometimes that means the less involved partner joins us once a year over lunch. Other times it becomes more regular—but shared understanding and financial confidence are always the goal.” She believes wealth is deeply personal. “Our experiences with money shape how we feel about it,” Yuill explains. “Some people grew up with unpredictability, others never discussed money at home. Wealth is emotional before it is mathematical.”

“FINANCIAL CONFIDENCE COMES FROM UNDERSTANDING YOUR PLAN, YOUR PRIORITIES AND YOUR LONG-TERM DIRECTION. THAT’S WHAT ALLOWS FAMILIES TO STAY CALM, DISCIPLINED AND TUNE OUT FINANCIAL NOISE.”

GENERATIONAL WEALTH TODAY: EDUCATION OVER ENTITLEMENT

“One of the biggest concerns families have is preparing their children for financial responsibility,” Yuill says. “Parents want children who are educated, not entitled.” Her team supports this through guidance and open dialogue. “We host monthly workshops for adult children covering personal finance, paychecks and managing cash,” Yuill explains. “We also hold family meetings to walk through financial and estate planning, so everyone feels prepared if life takes an unexpected turn.”

WEALTH IS MORE THAN A NUMBER: CONFIDENCE, CLARITY AND LONGTERM THINKING

“Wealth is about far more than net worth,” Yuill says. “It’s about security, flexibility and peace of mind. Planning should include healthcare, longevity, education and legacy— not just investments.” Her philosophy reflects Beacon Pointe’s female-founded roots while serving all families. “Collaboration, listening and long-term thinking create a space where women feel confident and empowered—but ultimately, strong financial understanding benefits every individual and every family.”

BRENTWOOD’S BAGEL BOOM

A new wave of local players has reshaped the classic breakfast item into an unmistakable neighborhood showdown

For more than two decades, Brentwood mornings followed a familiar rhythm—coffee poured, newspapers folded and, for many locals, a stop at the beloved New York Bagel Co., a stalwart of the community that served multi-generations from its Town & Country perch. It wasn’t flashy, it wasn’t trendy—it was constant. Families grew up on it, regulars knew the counter

staff, architecture buffs quietly noted the Frank Gehry-designed interiors and it became woven into the subtle rituals that define a neighborhood. So, when New York Bagel closed in 2024 following a landlord dispute after 21 years, the loss felt unexpectedly emotional. Brentwood wasn’t just losing a breakfast spot—it was losing a piece of its history.

In the short time since, Brentwood has found itself in the middle of a subtle but unmistakable transformation—one defined by lines forming early, mornings stretching longer and breakfast evolving from routine into a phenomenon. What began as a shift has become something more dynamic: a new era of bagel culture where old-school tradition meets new-school energy. A quiet neighborhood staple has suddenly turned Brentwood into an unlikely battleground, as bagel shops around town fight for the top spot.

The spark came in December, when PopUp Bagels—the East Coast sensation founded by Adam Goldberg—arrived on San Vicente and immediately drew crowds (and influencers) around the block. What began during the pandemic as Goldberg baking for neighbors in the small suburban town of Westport, Connecticut swiftly became something far larger. “PopUp Bagels was born out of my kitchen during COVID, and quickly became a widespread phenomenon within my community,” Goldberg says. “That’s when we knew it had the potential to become something much bigger. After opening our first shop in New York City, we were overwhelmed by the outpouring of support from our customers and quickly realized we had struck gold.”

What makes PopUp different is its simplicity—and precision. The bagels are served hot and whole, fresh from the oven,

inviting customers to tear them apart and dip them into rotating schmears, from classic scallion cream cheese to a more gourmet butter-based garlic rosemary. The bagels themselves are intentionally unfussy, yet technically exact: crisp crust, soft interior, balanced seeds and clean ingredients. The now-signature “Grip, Rip and Dip” process turns breakfast into something communal— less about eating on the go and more about sharing a moment.

Brentwood was intentionally chosen as the brand’s first west coast location—a signal that this tranquil residential enclave had become fertile ground for a new kind of breakfast culture. Beyond the bagels themselves, it was the atmosphere that resonated. “The bagels are incredible, but the team has also done an amazing job building a real sense of community around the product,” says James Marzouk of Sweetzer Capital, who helped bring the concept to Southern California. “We saw an opportunity to bring that same energy to Brentwood and contribute to what makes the neighborhood so special.”

That sense of community has been evident from the beginning. PopUp launched with collaborations rooted in neighborhood spirit— partnering with equally buzzy new Brentwood arrival La La Land Café on a matcha-flavored schmear for opening day and working with local creator Brett Chody of Brett’s Bites on a limited-edition Dessert Bowl Butter featuring ingredients like M&M’s, Oreos and chocolate chips. “I’m so excited that PopUp Bagels is finally open in Brentwood,” Chody says. “I’ve been a fan of the brand for years so getting to create my very own butter was a dream come true.” The lively Brentwood shop, filled with collages of fans and regulars, has added to what is quickly becoming one of the most active corridors in town at the corner of San Vicente and Barrington. Yet while PopUp represents the energy of the new guard, Hank’s Bagels in Brentwood Village has emerged as a quieter but equally compelling contender—grounded less in hype and more in heritage. Founded by husband-and-wife team Trevor and Kelley Faris and named after their middle son Hank, the business began as a small neighborhood shop in Burbank, with additional locations in Sherman Oaks and Calabasas. The couple—parents of three young boys—built Hank’s around a simple but unwavering belief: great bagels take time. Each sourdough bagel undergoes a slow three-day fermentation, developing the depth of flavor that defines the brand. “It might sound simple, but that is the not-so-secret secret. And it’s annoying,” Trevor laughs. “I wish the process could be sped up, but it takes three days to make a Hank’s bagel, and we’ll never do it any other way.”

Brentwood marked both a strategic and personal next step. The move west brought the Faris family closer to longtime customers while also carrying personal meaning. “Brentwood is a perfect geographical steppingstone for us since it’s a straight shot down the 405 and gives our westside fans easier access to all of their Hank’s favorites,” Trevor explains. “I lived right down the street for a time as a kid and so there’s a fun, semi-homecoming element to it as well.”

Inside, the shop reflects its roots. Children’s drawings line the walls, families gather outside after school and regulars return for favorites like the No. 3 sandwich layered with nova lox, scallion cream cheese, salted cucumber, pickled onion, capers, dill, radish and sprouts. Other menu staples—from rosemary sea salt bagels and onion bialys to sandwiches such as fried egg with maple-glazed bacon and soppressata with Fontina—blend classic deli tradition with a distinctly California warmth.

And the story is still unfolding. Layla Bagels—known for its inventive open-faced sourdough creations and devoted crowds in Santa Monica—is preparing to open on South Barrington, just around the corner from PopUp, adding another layer to the competition. “Our guests had been begging for a Brentwood store since we opened, so it was a logical next step,” says chef Sammi Tarantino. “We can’t wait to be in the neighborhood.” Meanwhile, Pop’s Bagels—long a local favorite and one of the earlier players in Brentwood’s modern bagel story—continues to hold its ground with its custom sandwich culture, while the Yeastie Boys truck makes weekly appearances outside Jon & Vinny’s, reinforcing the neighborhood’s expanding carb corridor. Even the former New York Bagel space remains part of

the narrative, now home to Italian deli Ggiata and its bacon egg and cheese served on a Jyan Isaac bagel—a quiet reminder of where this story began and how much Brentwood’s breakfast landscape is evolving.

Yet, amid the buzz, the lines and the steady rise of newcomers, one classic endures. At Vicente Foods, tucked behind the grocery aisles at the back deli counter, simple, no-frills bagels continue to quietly serve loyal locals—without spectacle, without hype and without the wait. Some residents swear they rival the newer stars, a reminder that here in Brentwood, tradition still holds its ground.

FOREVER Ever AFTER

ReloomVR is a groundbreaking way to relive weddings, milestones and the memories that matter most

There are certain moments in life that people always wish they could revisit—the sound of laughter during a wedding toast, the pride in a parent’s eyes during a bar mitzvah, the feeling of being surrounded by the people who matter most. For Zvi Goffer, that universal longing—to hold onto fleeting moments—became the driving force behind ReloomVR, a groundbreaking immersive technology that allows families to do something once thought impossible: truly return to their most meaningful memories.

Long before ReloomVR transformed milestone celebrations, Goffer, who lives in New York, was simply a father trying to show his sons something meaningful from his own life. When his boys were young, he attempted to introduce them to the college he attended, Binghamton University, hoping to spark curiosity about their futures. But when he opened the school’s virtual tour online, he was surprised. The experience felt flat and uninspiring, and his sons quickly lost interest. In that moment, he realized there had to be a better way. “You shouldn’t have to apply to a school blind if you can’t visit,” Goffer recalls. “You should be able to put on a headset and feel as though you’re actually there.”

Though he had no engineering background—coming from finance—Goffer grew up in a family of mechanics, where building and fixing things was simply part of life. Driven by instinct and curiosity, he began developing the technology himself. At its core, the system is both sophisticated and beautifully simple: a discreet, remote-controlled tripod equipped with multiple cameras moves throughout a space, capturing every angle and emotion. The footage is then seamlessly stitched together into an immersive virtual reality experience, viewed through a custom headset. What began as an idea quickly

became a company focused on immersive virtual college campus experiences, allowing students anywhere in the world to explore universities as if they were physically present. Timing accelerated everything. Launching just before the pandemic, when travel halted and in-person tours became impossible, demand for immersive virtual experiences surged. Colleges adopted it quickly, and athletic departments soon saw even greater potential—using VR to recruit athletes by transporting them directly into stadiums, locker rooms and game-day environments.

The growth was rapid. “Everything just took off,” Goffer says. He began working with powerhouse athletic programs including Duke, Connecticut, Alabama, Auburn, Texas, Mississippi and Maryland, helping schools recruit top talent in football and basketball. In one notable case, a top basketball recruit committed after experiencing a university entirely through VR, and the following year the team reached the Final Four. The technology was reshaping how athletes connected with programs—and how universities told their stories. Goffer even met with the Dallas Cowboys to explore bringing immersive fan and facility experiences to the professional level. What began as a simple idea had become a national innovation.

But everything changed during a deeply personal moment—one that shifted his focus from institutions to people. After losing his own mother a little over a year ago, Goffer’s close friend asked him to record something simple yet deeply meaningful: a Sunday spent watching football with his father, who was ill and nearing the end of his life. Barbecuing, laughing, throwing a ball with grandchildren—ordinary moments that suddenly felt irreplaceable. Weeks after his father passed away, the friend called, overwhelmed with emotion. “I just put on the

headset and for twenty minutes I forgot that my father was gone,” he told Goffer. “You gave me the ability to relive a moment with someone who’s no longer with me.” That realization changed everything, and what began as a favor became a mission.

From there, Goffer saw the potential to preserve life’s most meaningful celebrations. “We started with weddings and bar mitzvahs because those are the moments people want to remember forever,” he explains. Soon after, a prominent rabbi invited him to capture his daughter’s 1,200-person wedding. When the rabbi later experienced it in virtual reality, his hands trembled and tears streamed down his face. “He told me, ‘I feel like I went back in time and watched myself walk my daughter down the aisle again,’” Goffer says. “That’s when I knew this was something different.”

As word spread, one of New York’s most respected event planners, Norma Cohen, experienced the technology for herself. “She put on the headset and suddenly she was back at a wedding she had attended months earlier as a guest,” Goffer recalls. “It hit her emotionally.” Cohen quickly began booking the company for her clients. “As an event designer with over 35 years of experience creating unforgettable moments, I know the true value of capturing emotion and storytelling,” Cohen says. “Working with ReloomVR has completely transformed how I preserve and share my clients’ most cherished experiences. I’m sorry I didn’t know the team prior to now. What I would have personally done to have all my events in VR!” In another memorable experience, ReloomVR captured the bat mitzvah of influencer Lizzy Savetsky’s daughter, who later posted a video on Instagram showing her family reliving the event in awe. “This is epic!!!!” she exclaimed. “Everyone should do this for their big life events.”

ReloomVR expanded from New York to Miami, and now Los Angeles, quickly working with top talent including the city’s ultimate event planner, Mindy Weiss. “I recommend this for everyone,” says Irene Boujo of Weiss’ team. “It feels like you are right back in the moment.” One particularly meaningful project documented the bat mitzvah of a Palisades family rebuilding after the devastating fires. “When I delivered the headset, the mother told me that they had lost decades of physical memories—photos, heirlooms, everything,” Goffer recalls. “She said she felt relief knowing she would never lose this. That stayed with me.”

Today, the experience is comprehensive and deeply personal. “We capture everything,” Goffer explains. “Getting ready, the first look, ceremony, speeches, dancing—even

personal messages from parents and guests.”

Each moment is organized into chapters so families can return to any part of the day.

“You want to watch the ceremony again; you click and you’re back there,” he says. “It’s like moment-specific time travel.”

After the event, clients receive a custom headset containing both highlights and the full immersive experience, preserved forever. Additional headsets can be created for family, guests or loved ones who were unable to make it in person. In one milestone birthday celebration, the host even sent VR headsets as invitations, each containing a personal message. After the party, the full experience was loaded onto every headset so guests could relive the celebration. The technology is also being used to capture early childhood moments, from first birthdays to little league games.

For Goffer, the meaning of the work is clear. “The sports business was great, but this is different,” he says. “The reactions are real. People cry. It means something.” At its core, ReloomVR is not about technology—it is about preserving what matters most. Because someday a celebration becomes a memory—but with ReloomVR, you don’t just remember it. You step back inside it, again and again.

THE LONG Game

CAMERON

ROBINSON OF BRENTWOOD COUNTRY CLUB BELIEVES GOLF IS MORE THAN A SPORT—IT IS A LIFETIME RITUAL OF CHALLENGE, CAMARADERIE AND PERSONAL GROWTH

In a fast-moving world, few pursuits offer the kind of lasting return that golf does. For Cameron Robinson, Head PGA Professional at Brentwood Country Club, the game represents far more than recreation—it is a lifelong investment in discipline, resilience and connection. A dual member of the PGA of Great Britain and Ireland and the PGA of America, Robinson began his professional career working at private clubs in London, before bringing his expertise to Southern California. Today, he leads tournament operations and is involved in daily golf programming and instruction at Brentwood Country Club, working with players from beginners to elite amateurs. Robinson believes a lifelong sport shapes character. “It teaches perseverance,” he says. “Showing up when conditions aren’t perfect builds strong habits that translate into everyday life, both personally and professionally.” What continues to draw him back is golf’s rare combination of challenge and joy—the pursuit of striking the ball purely, and the many ways the game can be enjoyed socially, competitively and technically. Living and working in Brentwood has been especially meaningful. “It’s a beautiful part

of the world, an active community and I’m extremely grateful for how welcoming everyone has been since my arrival,” he says. “Brentwood Country Club has been a fantastic place to continue my work and contribute to the game.” Below, Robinson shares his tips for breaking into the sport.

Seek Professional Instruction Early

Starting with guidance from a trusted PGA Professional—one who aligns with your goals and focuses on improving your ball flight—helps build a strong foundation for long-term improvement. Establishing correct fundamentals early makes progress more efficient and far more sustainable over time.

Work on Striking the Ground After the Ball

On full shots, striking the ball first and then the ground (when the ball is not on a tee) is essentially your access pass to playing good golf. This sequence gives you the best chance of compressing the ball, controlling trajectory and consistently finding the center of the club face.

Practice with Purpose Around Lessons

On the day of a lesson, try to practice either before or after your session. This reinforces what you’ve worked on, helping convert instruction into lasting improvement rather than short-term change. Intentional practice is one of the most powerful tools for long-term development.

Learn Etiquette While Keeping the Game

Moving—and Fun

Golf etiquette is part of the experience, but it should never feel intimidating. Enjoy the learning process and don’t be afraid to get out on the course early in your journey. When starting out, pace of play matters more than perfection—hit it, lose it, pick it up, place it near your group and keep moving. Reducing pressure keeps the experience enjoyable and helps new players truly fall in love with the game.

Use

a Caddie or Take a Caddie-Style Playing Lesson When Possible

When your level allows, playing with a caddie can be invaluable. From course knowledge to strategy and decision-making, a caddie’s perspective can significantly improve both performance and confidence, helping you better understand how to navigate the game over time.

The drink that makes you look forward to TAX DAY

INCOME TAX cocktail

INGREDIENTS:

• 1½ oz. Gin

• ¾ oz. Dry Vermouth

• ¾ oz. Sweet Vermouth

• ¾ oz. Freshly Squeezed Orange Juice

• 2 Dashes Angastura Bitters

• Orange Twist

• Glass Type: Coupe

DIRECTIONS:

1.

2. Add everything to your shaker with ice.

4. Pour into your coupe.

5. Twist your orange peel again, like you did last summer.

7. Enjoy being done with taxes.

8. And a good cocktail.

The Income Tax Cocktail likely popped up during the Prohibition party scene of the 1920s. Its exact origin story remains a bit blurry, but it was definitely a hit in speakeasies.

The name? Well, it's like a cheeky nod to the idea that sipping on this cocktail might be more fun than paying actual taxes! Made with gin, sweet vermouth, orange juice, and a dash of bitters, it's like a boozy adventure for your taste buds, with hints of citrus and herbs. Despite its vintage roots, the Income Tax Cocktail still brings the party vibes, transporting you back to the roaring '20s.

Our approach is intentional and personal. Each residence is designed around the people who will live there, while respecting the spirit, scale, and character of the Pacific Palisades.
