Love Local
February 2024 PUBLISHER
Love is in the air here in Brentwood! I don’t know about you, but this time of year I am always torn. I find myself torn between resisting the commercialization of another greeting card holiday and indulging in all the sweet excuses to enjoy the season. To do a Valentine’s Day date out or enjoy a cozy night at home? To buy a card or just say a kind word? I usually land somewhere a little in between. We’ll each arrive at different answers based on our preferences and personalities, but what we hold in common is an opportunity to make sure those around us know we love them. Regardless of how you choose to celebrate, we hope the pages of this month’s magazine will help you do just that as we celebrate and highlight what’s to love in your local community. Growing up I always noticed how uncomfortable and lonely Valentine’s Day could make people feel. I hate the feeling of anyone feeling alone and I would always try to combat that by ambushing my loved ones with love during this month. Whether that was by baking them a treat, treating them to coffee or even just writing them a note that reminds them how thankful I am to have them in my life. While we teeter between the chill of January winter and the excitement of spring, we hope you’ll be inspired to take a moment to come together with the people in your life. The ones in your home and on your street. In your neighborhood and your community. “Love local” means your local businesses, and those in your community - but it also means loving what is near. Those under your roof included. So grab a coffee at Crema Coffee Roasters and head home for a game night around the fire with the family. Or snag a bottle of wine from Maryland Farms Wine and Spirits and have a movie night in. We’ve always believed what we can do together is so much more than what we can do apart. And we continue to see that demonstrated through the many stories told in these pages month after month. Thanks for letting us be a part of the life you’re building, whatever that may look like. We hope that we inspire you to love it just a bit more than you did before. Happy February!

Winner, Winner, Chicken Dinner
Waldo's Chicken And Beer Comes To Brentwood In a city known for its hot chicken, Mark Waldo has managed to make quite a name for himself with Waldo’s Chicken and Beer. Fried and rotisserie chicken, wings, frozen margaritas, banana pudding – you name it and Waldo’s serves it, made from scratch every day.

Mark Waldo
Now, Waldo’s has expanded to Brentwood, where its newest restaurant sits at 7010 Executive Center Drive. Upon entering the store, Brentwood residents are greeted with friendly faces, warm smiles and the mouth-watering aroma of freshly breaded chicken. “We just love the neighborhood,” Mark explains. “We love the community. We really enjoyed getting to meet everyone who works over here and lives over here. It really feels like they’ve given us a lot of love here on our opening day. You know, whenever we go into a new neighborhood, we really hope our restaurant and our customers and our employees are a positive reflection of the community. We feel like it has been over here.” First time at Waldo’s and unsure of what to get? No need to stress because the employees love to recommend their favorite menu items. “If it’s your first time here, tell the folks you’re talking to and watch how fast they give you a good tour of the menu and let you try a couple of different things, 'cause that’s what we’re all about!” Mark explains. Before there was Waldo’s, there were Two Birds. Two Birds was located on a college campus in Morgantown, West Virginia, and was a restaurant that served both fried and rotisserie chicken. After discovering that the name Two Birds was already trademarked, Mark and his group of partners decided to rename the restaurant to Waldo’s Chicken and Beer and opened their first Waldo’s location in Germantown in May 2019. It quickly became a favorite among locals and remains so even five years later. CONTINUED >

Waldo's Brentwood Location
Currently, there are 14 Waldo’s restaurants open and they’re expecting to open 10 more this year. Some of the new locations will be located in new markets, such as Memphis and the Mid-Atlantic, while also expanding in existing markets such as Little Rock. Belle Meade is also on the list that will be getting Waldo’s location this year. “We’re staying true to what has gotten us where we are right now,” Mark says. “Which is focusing on our food, focusing on our guests, keeping our stores clean, and having a good culture.” Regardless of which location, the high-quality food and excellent service remain the same. Every location is locally owned and operated, which allows for Mark and his group of partners to be hands-on at the restaurants. “A good typical day for me is wake up, get the kids to school, get to the restaurant, spend time with my team, work lunch, meet with my folks, work dinner, and really have my hands on the work, side by side with my team, interacting with the guests, interacting with our employees at the store level. That’s where I’m happiest,” Marks admits. “Don’t stick me in a boardroom, don’t stick me in an office. Put me in my restaurant and put me to work.” Mark appreciates the support the community has shown not only to his newest location, but to Waldo’s locations everywhere. Regardless of what is ordered, Waldo's Chicken and Beer customers seem delighted. 615.588.9049 WaldosChicken.com

“ T h e b i g ge s t s u r p r i s e wa s t h e out p ou r i n g of h a p p i n e s s , j oy a n d p e o p le we ’ ve m e t ,” s ays B a r b a r a Joyc e , c o - ow n e r. The happiest place in Middle Tennessee is a little gift shop located on Nolensville Pike. Happy Place Market and Mercantile are sisters Carol Morris and Barbara Joyce’s childhood dream come true. Ever since they were children, Carol and Barbara say they dreamt of opening a store where everyone could walk in and find something they love whilst maintaining affordable prices for their products. In May 2021, these childhood dreams became a reality and the doors to Happy Place were officially opened. However, it didn’t exactly start this way. Before Happy Place Market and Mercantile, Carol had been working in the corporate world. In August 2016, she was diagnosed with Multiple Sclerosis, an autoimmune disorder that impacts the central nervous system in which the body attacks itself by mistake. Between her MS diagnosis and COVID-19 happening four years later, she says she realized she needed to take a step back and de-stress her life. This included leaving her job after spending 20 years with her company. “I felt my MS was progressing, so I just needed to slow down and stop and redo my life and the first thing that came to my mind was my job,” Carol explains. “One day I gave my notice and that was it, after 20 years with a company. Then my first idea was to open up my own store.” Now, she spends her days at her Happy Place. Here, there’s a gift for everyone, and behind every product is a small business or nonprofit that benefits from every purchase made. From stickers and pins for children to gift baskets filled with local products to
birthday cards, candles and even apparel, the Happy Place offers it all. With their business, Carol and Barbara have built friendships with their vendors and customers, as evidenced by the amount of love put into each detail at the store. “The biggest surprise was the outpouring of just happiness and joy, and the people we’ve met,” Barbara says. “We couldn't do it without them or local support and how many new people are constantly coming in. It's just so fun and makes it all so worth it. We’re not like ‘Oh we just need to fill the shelves,’ we’ve put so much time and thought into everything.” “We put thought into everything and these vendors have become our family,” Carol adds. In January 2022, Barbara joined Carol at the Happy Place, fulfilling their dream of owning a store together. “Besides getting to hang out every day and getting to live out this dream that we’ve had for so long, just knowing that someone has your back and it’s the person you trust and love the most like it’s your person you get to experience this with,” Carol explains. “We’ve always been so close and we’ve always worked for somebody else, and now it’s ours and it’s our future." “We get to appreciate what we’ve put into it and we get to share the joy of what we get out of what we put into it and it means so much more because it is ours,” Barbara says. As for Carol’s MS, she doesn’t let it define her, and she continues to do the things she loves. “It is insane how many people that I have met and have come in and been like ‘I have MS’ and you CONTINUED >

wouldn’t know they had MS, and you wouldn’t know I have it either,” Carol says. “It doesn’t define me but this is what helped me make the Happy Place my happy place and bring me back to my zen zone. It took the stress out and gave me fun.” With all of the love they’ve poured into their store, they’ve managed to create a calm and stress-free shopping experience. Whether a first-time customer or the seventh time there, shoppers indicate they feel right at home. They also have gifts for people of all age groups, from children to grandparents, and it’s an incredible spot to find a gift for Valentine’s Day.

One of their most popular items is a gift basket that is filled with products from local businesses. Their gift baskets are a perfect gift for someone who just moved to the area or for someone who is looking to be introduced to new businesses. To make the shopping experience even more special, Happy Place also offers gift-wrapping services. Carol and Barbara have found their happy place, and now, these sisters hope that Happy Place Market and Mercantile will become everyone else's happy place, too. 615.283.3342 HappyPlaceMarketMercantile.com

HOME F E AT U R E S TO SEEK Erin Krueger Provides Housing Trends To Look Out for In 2024
The housing market in Tennessee likes to keep people on their toes. We received insight from expert agent, Erin Krueger on what may be worth incorporating into a property before putting it on the market. Buyers regularly have their eyes out for certain features while searching for their dream home and Erin is letting us know what is trending in 2024.
MOVE-IN READY HOUSES:
The days of home renovations may be coming to an end. Most homebuyers are now on the hunt for move-in ready houses, and less so looking for fixer-uppers. “They are looking for homes already ready, less and less buyers are willing to take on renovation projects,” Erin says.
With the quarantine days in the past, people don’t have as much free time as they once did. As a result, homebuyers are on the lookout for houses that won’t need too many weekend projects to have a dream house transformation.
SCULLERIES:
Not only is it functional but also stylish, sculleries are slowly rising in popularity amongst homebuyers. “A scullery is a separate, secondary kitchen or workspace that is typically located adjacent to the main kitchen,” Erin explains. “It is used for various purposes, including food preparation, cleanup and additional storage.” This feature is especially beneficial for those homebuyers who need the extra kitchen space and have a knack for hosting dinner parties. POOLS:
A timeless addition to any home is a pool, and homes with them sell faster. “One feature that's proven to help homes sell faster than others is the inclusion of a well-designed pool and outdoor entertaining area,” Erin says. “In today's real estate market, many buyers are seeking homes that offer a resort-like experience in their own backyard.” Homebuyers are looking to elevate their living experience, and an addition such as a pool, is a simple way to achieve this desire.
DECLUTTER AND DEPERSONALIZE:
When it comes to listing houses, minimalism stands the test of time. “Remove personal items and excess clutter to help potential buyers envision themselves living in the space,” Erin says. “A clean and clutter-free home feels more spacious and inviting.” If in the process of listing a house, less is more. Leave something to the imagination and let the buyers imagine how they can decorate the house.
ACCENTS:
When asked about one home trend Erin thinks will rise in popularity in 2024, she thinks that accents on the interior of houses may become more common. “I think you will see a lot more accents with texture on the interiors of home with wood elements, stone or plaster,” Erin says. Accents add a lot of character to an otherwise simple room. In the past, accents have oftentimes been an ignored home feature, but 2024 may just be the year where this fun feature gets the recognition it deserves. 615.509.7166 ErinKrueger.com

“We have worked directly with the miners and their families for 40-plus years to ensure a fair and healthy process for everyone involved, including the crystals.” says Amanda
When Ataana Badilli, a renowned healer, opened Nashville Crystal Store in Berry Hill, he had already been supporting the Nashville community since 2005 by using consciously sourced crystals. In 2018, Amanda Dunn joined him to assist in the opening of a second location in East Nashville. Today, there are also stores in Chattanooga and Brentwood, the latter of which just opened last year. “Upon entry, our knowledgeable and intuitive staff is there to support you on your journey with crystal information,” says Amanda. “Each crystal is labeled with its individual properties, so it’s like a crystal pharmacy.” She herself describes how crystals have impacted her life. “My physical body was failing, and a neighbor gave me a crystal to help me.” She held that crystal all through the night. The next day, she says “I was walking and holding more life force. My energy had shifted. That crystal changed my life.”
After that experience, Amanda knew she had to help others in the same way. She says she is dedicated to the empowerment of others, working with the meditation that assisted her throughout her own life to help others see possibilities, unfoldment, self-healing, and potential. She incorporates a healing modality known as the Ataana Method: Sacred Inner Dialogue, which was created by Ataana Badilli. Her specialized work within the stores ranges from operations to crystal pairings. “We offer weekly guided crystal meditations, frequency healing, and sound baths.” The various Crystal Stores specialize in healing crystals as well as gemstones from around the globe. While in the store, you can instantly see the beauty of the crystals, which range from eight feet tall to pocket size. Some of the stores’ most popular items include bracelets that feature white howlite, purple amethyst, and black obsidian. CONTINUED >

Its various palm stones are also on the best sellers list. Customers can find the beautiful orange and red carnelian, fluorite in shades of green and blue, and the soothing lavender colors of lepidolite. Visiting the Crystal Stores and seeing the most amazing crystals from all over the world, she says, is an incredible experience. These stores allow her and Ataana to assist in cultivating their abilities to help support specific needs, while also providing a special environment that sensitive people are drawn towards. “It is our job to ensure safety and energy, not only for the crystals, but also for the people who are present in the stores, and to also have a harmonious atmosphere where sensitive beings are welcome.” “We have worked directly with the miners and their families for 40-plus years to ensure a fair and healthy process for everyone involved, including the crystals. We also work with clients in specialized placements of larger stones anchored on
properties, provide museum-grade specimens, crystal knowledge and feng shui.” In addition to the crystals, customers love the beautiful gemstones. For Valentine’s Day, the stores will have a wide array of gemstone jewelry as well as unique crystal gifts. “We love to assist in helping people find that something special for their loved ones,” says Amanda. “We work with artists from around the world with one-of-a-kind gemstone jewelry, sculptures, and crystal furniture.” She wants people to come in and experience one of the stores for themselves. “We encourage families and children to participate in experiencing our stores and crystals.” Nashvillecrystalstore.com Ataanamethod.com Instagram: @nashvillecrystalstore @brentwoodcrystalstore @eastnashvillecrystalstore @chattanoogacrystalstore

H E R E ' S TO RETIREMENT
After 44 Years Of Service, Sheriff Dusty Rhoades Says Hello To Retirement
ARTICLE BY MARY COMPTON PHOTOGRAPHY PROVIDED

H OM E TOWN H E R O | LO CAL SE RVICE S
Retirement is a time to say goodbye to years of hard work and hello to a new beginning, embracing all the new adventures to come. After years of commitment to work, retirees dare to go somewhere different, somewhere unfamiliar. Williamson County Sheriff Dusty Rhoades is at the fork in the road, where it is time to say goodbye to a job well done and hello to a new chapter of his life. “It’s time to go. It’s a New Year. A new chapter in my life,” says Sheriff Dusty, “It’s time to give the reins to somebody else.” Sheriff Dusty is a West Tennessee native and has served Williamson County Tennessee for 44 years as sheriff. He says he always wanted to be in law enforcement from the time he was young. He wanted to help people and that’s exactly what he did. He studied criminal justice at Middle Tennessee State University. Then he started as a deputy sheriff and worked the road for many years. His career in law enforcement began in Williamson County on June 1, 1979, under Sheriff Fleming Williams, who was first elected sheriff in 1970, coming into law enforcement after a background in the oil business. “Working the road” in law enforcement is slang for patrolling the roads. He then worked his way up the ranks. He was elected as sheriff in 1979, where he served respectfully until he retired at the end of December 2023, and is on to the next step.
He is a modest man for all that he has accomplished within those 44 years. Sheriff Dusty’s office was a showroom of his awards, trophies, badges, certifications and commemorations; the memorabilia of his time in service proudly displayed around him. He is proud of his work and proud of his team of coworkers, officers and deputy sheriffs. The walls captured his time serving the community. Among the many honors, hanging on one of the office’s walls is a photo of when he met President George Bush. Another photo is of the director of the FBI presenting him with an honor. Sheriff Dusty is a member of the Captain John Easley Law Enforcement Hall of Fame. To be recommended for the Hall of Fame, one must have served 30 years in law enforcement. This sheriff has served beyond those years in great dedication. He says the highlight of his job is helping people. “When people call, we come. That’s what we’re here for, to help them,” he adds. Sheriff Dusty says he has seen some serious times while working in law enforcement, but that has not stopped him from trying to make a difference. Even during COVID-19, he was hard at work and became a certified public administrator. During that troubling time, he likes to jokingly recall, “We may doze, but we never close.” Working in law enforcement is a dangerous job and it is a job CONTINUED >

that never stops. Since Sheriff Dusty has been elected, citizens have not seen one death of his team of deputy sheriffs. He prioritized his community and team of sheriffs with commitment and appreciation. Upon his retirement Sheriff Dusty, “wishes all [his] deputies success in the future. I’ve got a lot of people to thank, my wife and the sheriffs that kept me on,” he says. "I’m fortunate that a handful of employees who joined around the same time I did were still here serving with me." He says his wife and chores will fill up the time during retirement. He may do some traveling out West and wants to vacation anywhere there is a beach. Among his hobbies he admits he might start up again is golf, which he hasn’t

played in years. "I like tennis and racquetball as well." He has a group of racquetball friends whom he has known for quite a long time. And, yes, he says he might even try his hand at the ever-popular pickleball. His wife, family, grandchild and dog are eagerly awaiting the time when they can see Sheriff Dusty more. And because his family lives right down the same street as Sheriff Dusty, he will get to see a whole lot more of them. They are proud of him for all that he has done. They have supported him all along the way. Sheriff Dusty is also happy to spend more time with them as well. Retirement isn’t the end of the road; it is just a turn in the road. When one road comes to an end. There is always another road ahead waiting to be traveled.

"We're dedicated to enhancing smiles and boosting our patients’ self-confidence." Dedicated to ensuring that local smiles shine as brightly as the night-time Nashville skyline, Matt Kasiar, D.D.S., offers his general and cosmetic dentistry services at The Practice, a state-of-theart dental facility in Franklin. Dr. Kasiar and his team are ready to provide patients with their dream smiles by offering top-quality dental services that focus on aesthetics. After completing his undergraduate studies at the University of Evansville, where he received a degree in mechanical engineering, he graduated from Southern Illinois University of Dental Medicine with his doctorate in dentistry. He’s been considered the premier cosmetic dentist at The Practice for almost two decades. He, his wife, and their three children reside in Brentwood. Along with family, surgical and sedation dentistry, The Practice offers cosmetic services, such as implants and veneers, including a particular type of “prepless” veneers. The procedure is minimally invasive and the results are designed to transform patients' smiles. These veneers can be applied over the existing tooth’s surface, and as they don’t require the same amount of grinding or enamel removal as traditional veneers, the procedure better protects the surface of the original teeth. The process can be completed quickly and with less discomfort than the traditional one.

Dr. Kasiar and his team say they also can consult on a personalized Smile Design treatment, a comprehensive approach that considers a person's facial structure and tooth alignment when deciding on a treatment plan to correct aspects, such as the symmetry, color and overall appearance of smiles. "We are proud of all of our cases, but the two that stick out are our Smile Giveaway winners," Dr. Kasiar says. "Those are complex cases that have drastic end results and really can have a profound impact changing someone's life." Teeth whitening, crowns, bridges and fillings also are offered, and Dr. Kaiser says he wants patients to experience confidence through the smiles his skill can produce. Virtual or in-person consultations can be scheduled. The Practice plans to open a second location in Murfreesboro in early 2025.

BUILDING TRUST

A HOME RENOVATION COMPANY THAT TAKES PRIDE IN ITS CRAFTMANSHIP
When homeowners in Tennessee want to remodel their homes, they seek a company they can trust to make their visions a reality. “We've been in business for 42 years, and we’ve built that trust,” says Mark Williams, founder and owner of RSU Contractors. “We specialize in remodeling, and our employees know how to work in someone’s home and leave it better than they found it.” Company employees are on site every day managing projects to ensure work is being done correctly every step of the way. “Our people have been with us a long time and take pride in what they do,” he says. Each project is customized for every single homeowner and house. At the end of last year, RSU completed a huge renovation in Arrington, and the owners could not be happier. “The Jones’ house was originally just a ranch-style house,” says production manager, Jim Walker. “Today, it’s a contemporary modern ranch.” The great room, which has a combined living room, dining room and kitchen, now has large windows and is filled with light. “The owners were looking for an open space, and since it was a late 80s build, there were lots of interior walls dividing the space and the ceilings were only eight feet high,” he says. “Now, the ceiling soars at just around 22 feet.” The kitchen, with its modern appliances and huge center island, is perfect for a family. Instead of a traditional backsplash, it has a stylish brick composition. The primary bedroom also underwent an amazing transformation. “The footprint of the bedroom basically stayed the same; we just made it more modern with a chair rail and upgraded trim,” says Jim. “We also added two windows and raised the ceiling height from eight to nine feet.”

The en suite bathroom has been upgraded to a luxurious spa-like space. RSU also remodeled the home office, the kids’ rooms and bathrooms, the guest bedroom, created a bonus room with lots of storage, and extended the living space to the outdoors. “The outdoor living space is off of the great room and kitchen area,” he says. “It has a beadboard ceiling and lots of stonework with an overlaid stamped concrete floor. It extends the living area to the outside, expanding the entertaining space.” The massive fireplace also keeps things cozy. “The homeowners were very particular about how they wanted the outcome to look,” says Jim. “I believe we hit their vision.” RSUContractors.com

ARTIST SHANE MILLER CREATES BEAUTIFUL DREAMY ESCAPES

"In Our Memories" 20x16
"The Passage of Our Emotions" 40x30
Nashville artist Shane Miller has been compared to the tonalism artist William Turner. Both artists have a similar thread of creativity when it comes to their depictions of nature. Shane's work is “an ode to the tonalism movement.” The tonalism movement first began during the 1880s. The style captures the mood and atmosphere of nature by using colors and light to create an essence of emotion on canvas. The landscapes represent emotion, rather than a real representation of a certain place. The colors are moody and can even be described as solemn, yet peaceful. Shane uses oils on canvas in the colors of cayenne, umbers, ultramarine blues, earth tones, and shades of gray transforming the viewer into a dreamy and tranquil world. The flow of colors disappears into each other in no distinct pattern or lines. The effect is a foggy and seamless blend of shapes of land or water in a beautiful natural setting. Shane's works are full of “dreams and silent emotions.” He creates from his imagination. He uses light and the transmission of light to illuminate the world he paints. When painting water scenes, he expresses that the water represents the movement of time and the passing of life. These scenes can give the viewer, “a sense of peace away from life,” says Shane. Forbes magazine praised his work saying he, “evoke[s] a sense of nostalgia and a longing for something distant and intangible.” Shane has been a professional artist for seven years and is based in Nashville. His work is shown in five galleries spanning the southeast, across Tennessee and South Carolina. Painting to him does not require inspiration each time. "It takes more discipline than that," he suggests. He hones his craft by being in his studio six days a week and painting every day. Painting to Shane is a form of meditation, but he says he tries not to stay too comfortable with his art process. He thinks comfort is “a slow death.” “If you’re comfortable, you are not growing and evolving. And art is always a movement, changing from time to time as the world evolves,” he says. Shane has no training in art, but says he “stumbled into it” after playing guitar and being musically inclined to art in that way. He is a self-taught artist. After trial and error, Shane discovered a style that resonated with him. And so, he began his professional career as an artist. CONTINUED >

Shane Miller
At first, he says his art was created for family and friends, then friends of friends, then displayed in coffee houses and then in galleries. He established an online presence through Instagram and his website with a portfolio of his work. His artistry grew organically and when he realized people loved and enjoyed his work, the door was open to create more. Although his work is primarily residential, Shane says he is eager to showcase his ballads of art to the public setting. For inquiries, appointments with him for viewing his collection of work in his studio can be scheduled. His 450 or so square foot studio is filled with natural light and high ceilings with paintings on every wall, on easels, and stored for viewing. His work is currently displayed in these five galleries: Bennett Galleries in Nashville, Gallery 1401 in Chattanooga, District Gallery in Knoxville, Mary Martin Gallery in Charleston, South Carolina, and Art and Light Gallery in Greenville, South Carolina. He is also planning to show his work out West. As art is moving more from gallery gatekeepers to a direct-tocustomer artist-to-client approach, Shane is capitalizing on social media to build his clientele and portfolio. Social media is a new way of getting art out there and accessible to those who admire it. Shane’s art is typically considered beautiful, peaceful, meaningful and emotional. He states his art is never planned. It evolves as he paints and will be what it will be. As the colors and shapes unfold, there is a new beginning; a new quiet escape appears and the viewer is left with serenity. ShaneArtistry.com

Brentwood Lifestyle compiled a small list of the many activities to do to celebrate! One thing’s for sure though, Middle Tennessee is not short of activities to do for Galentine’s Day which is more than just getting dinner and drinks.
