January 2023 Health & Wellness For many of us, this time of year is full of excitement. It presents us with a reset, new horizons and goals to pursue. But for others, January can be a reminder of failed attempts from years past and the burden of expectation that this year will be different. We approached this issue of Brentwood Lifestyle from a mindset of not supplying quick fixes to check boxes in the short term but valuing what is sustainable over the long haul. We wanted to provide inspiration for making lasting, realistic, long-term improvements to your physical, emotional and mental health. When it comes to anything in life — business, finance, food, home and personal health – it’s not what you do some days that move the needle - it’s what you do MOST days. For better or worse! For instance, taking a vacation every day would be financially and practically unfeasible, but taking a trip a few times a year is doable. Having a beautiful steak dinner with a few cocktails and creme brulee every night for dinner isn’t best for your health, but doing so once in a while might be fine! It’s not the sometimes choices we make, it’s the most of the time choices. So plan the vacation AND work to establish more regular rest in your work week. Join a fitness community or gym AND enjoy that dessert you’ve been wanting to try at The Puffy Muffin. New LED Streetlights Coming to Brentwood Brentwood city commissioners approved a $3.5 million agreement with PATH Company officials to upgrade nearly 4,000 streetlights with new LED lighting. The project includes updates to streetlight agreements with the city’s electric service providers. In many locations, new streetlight fixtures will be installed. In neighborhoods with decorative streetlights, the aesthetics of poles and fixtures won't change, but new LED bulbs will be installed. The full installation is expected to be completed in late spring of 2023.

Brentwood Pianist Earns Division Finalist In MTNA Junior Piano Competition Abigail Goddard won the Tennessee Music Teachers National Association Competitions held at Lipscomb University and will represent Tennessee as a Division Finalist in the MTNA Junior Piano Competition. National winners will be announced in mid-January. Abbie is the daughter of Brentwood residents Jeffery and Laura Goddard. She's studied classical piano since age 4, and is currently a freshman at Ravenwood High School. MTNA is a nonprofit organization comprised of 17,000 independent and collegiate music teachers.

DesignCraft Kitchen & Bath Co. staff opened the company's second location within the Brentwood Business Center last summer at 500 Wilson Pike Circle, Suite 211. We have so much fun.” Tamara explains the beginning of MDC Nashville. “I knew AnnMarie Hudson (creator of parent studio, Millennium Dance Complex, Los Angeles). We talked about my opening a studio here, and after a couple of stops and starts, I did it. Initially, we were predominantly focused on creating a kid’s dance team. We had about 75 kids and also had open classes (all ages) that we were trying to fill when COVID hit. We did events to pay the bills. Weddings, bar mitzvahs … you name it, we did it. Post-pandemic, Tamara added more open classes that catered to a different crowd. “Adults weren’t always comfortable dancing with 11-year-olds. Now, our busiest classes are for adult beginners, with people who have never danced a day in their life or have not danced in several years. They pick it up and are addicted. We have beginner classes almost every night. They're infectious and wonderful, and people leave with smiles on their faces.” It’s not just the dancing that makes people come back again and again. “I’ve seen so many cases where people worry they won’t be welcomed, but by the time they leave, they feel as if they’ve found a home. They feel seen and feel safe. We all have a space in this world. To me, that’s what I wanted (from the business). No one laughs at anyone else; they encourage each other. It’s a beautiful thing.” Students in some classes have become so close that they spend holidays with one another. MDC has a novel approach for those interested in participating. “I’m a stickler about welcoming people to Millennium,” says Tamara. “When you come in, we ask for your name and introduce ourselves. Then, if you don’t know what type of class you want to take, we show you

around the building and give you a synopsis so you know how the classes work and what’s available.” Students don’t have to register as ongoing customers. “Nothing is tying you down. You can pay $15 for one class, you can buy a package, you can buy an unlimited monthly special, or you can just pop in when you want,” says Tamara, who finds this a critical factor in keeping dancers from feeling as if they’re tied into a membership. “There’s a little bit more flexibility. Then we try to ensure we get feedback as people are leaving to make sure they’ve enjoyed the experience.” Millennium Dance also offers lucrative exposure for interns, choreographers, and dancers. “Joy Spears has done numerous gigs due to her time here,” says Tamara. “She’s worked with Walker Hayes, Florida Georgia Line, and others. Chmira Dayvon performed with The Weeknd at the Superbowl halftime show. Celebrity Trainer Gunnar Peterson FITNESS IS OUR COMMON GROUND

Gunnar Peterson is a household name when it comes to the fitness world, with a sprawling client list as diverse as his training methods. After more than three decades in the industry, training universally-recognized names from professional athletes to Hollywood celebrities, and his gym’s lease ended in Beverly Hills earlier this year, it was time for a change. Gunnar, his wife, Jess, and their two youngest children decided to flock southeast to middle Tennessee for a myriad of reasons, including their oldest daughter’s enrolling at Duke. Gunnar and Jess had visited the area many times over the previous couple of years, but now they were on the clock. They fell in love with the breadth and space that Tennessee provides, after many years spent in the city. Beyond the space to spread out, he also adores the added sense of family values that raising kids here fosters. But Gunnar isn’t new to the south: he grew up in Houston, Texas, attended college at Duke, and lived in New Orleans. Gunnar’s parents have called Tennessee home for a decade — living on a farm outside of Memphis, so the call was natural for the celebrity trainer to move back to be near them, and for them to spend more time with their grandchildren. Unfortunately, as happens too often in life, things didn’t go according to plan.

One morning in the spring, Gunnar’s fitness-minded mother went for her usual mile-long swim but was hospitalized later that day before slipping into a coma, and heartbreakingly, passing away. For anyone who has lost a parent, specifically a mom, that loss deeply changes people. Gunnar says, like most, he isn’t yet able to comprehend such a sudden, life-changing loss, but the motivational trainer has already let this loss teach him what’s important in life. "I had a good friend at the Lakers say 'There’s no crying on the yacht,' and for me, this rings especially true now. We are so lucky, blessed even, in this life, the small stuff just doesn’t matter. The real problems are things like your mom being sick, losing her, and all of that small stuff just fades away," says Gunnar. Truly, not sweating the small stuff and appreciating the time he has with his father just three hours away and his family, are key to Gunnar as he settles into life in Williamson County. Since moving to Nashville on July 3, what he calls a personal "Independence day" and celebration of freedom and room to breathe, Gunnar laughs, he's been quick to make his own stamp on Nashville's fitness community in addition to his worldwide wellness thumbprint. He serves as chief of athletics for F45, while the father of five also

recently set up shop renovating a space in Cool Springs, a gym he's named Common Ground TN. "Fitness should always be our common ground. Whether we agree or disagree on the world's larger issues doesn’t matter, we can all find common ground in improving ourselves." Currently, it's Gunnar and one other trainer, Collin Schoen, working one-on-one with clients for private sessions. Once the gym's expansion is complete, Common Ground TN will staff four full-time trainers focused on training with an athletic bent and added functional components centered around body composition, performance and overall quality of life. Spending a trio of decades helping people improve their lives, in addition to private training, Gunnar has offered workouts on DVD since the early 2000s, including his Core Secrets DVD series and the Best Ever Hollywood Workout DVD. He also wrote a best-selling book, titled G-Force in 2005, about training and creating a positive mindset and created exercise machines the Bottom Line, The RAC and Hoop Hands.

It is the perfect way to usher in spring, bringing seasonal goods from farm to table. If you frequently entertain or are in search of new ways to wow your guests, a crudité board can be simple, quick and cost-effective. Think of it as a labor of love--part art, part organization and part self-expression. There are absolutely zero rules for building the ideal crudité board, but these six tips will help you along your way.

Put aluminum foil packet on baking sheet and cook beets until tender. 2. Once tender, remove beets from aluminum foil packet and allow beets to cool. Place beets, tahini, lemon juice and garlic in food processor. Process while slowly adding 1/4 cup olive oil through opening of food processor. Transfer to serving bowl then season generously with salt. Allow to sit covered for at least 30 minutes before eating. 3. Serve with a light drizzle of oil.
