The holidays are here, and as the spirit of the season is among us, we often try to replicate what made the season feel so magical to us in our youth. This is such a special time to live in Brentwood, as the town transforms into a winter wonderland perfectly encapsulated into a snow globe. This time of year is so special to me. Growing up, I took advantage of the holiday season to shower my loved ones with gifts and appreciation. I also used this time to give back to my community by participating in multiple volunteer opportunities by helping out with donations, fundraisers or simply by lending a helping hand. In this issue, we not only wanted to highlight the holiday season but also wanted to highlight some of the selfless people in our community. We’re celebrating members of our community who have taken the time to give back, and we are so thankful for them and all they do! We’ve also compiled a local gift and gift card guide to make your shopping easier, as well as spotlight some of the incredible holiday bars in our area. While this season can be beautiful for some, it can be painful and lonely for others, especially those who have recently lost a loved one. In the true spirit of the season, let’s take care of those in our community that need assistance or who are alone. My hope for you this season is that you feel love and peace and that we all remember to take care of each other extending grace, empathy, and love. Happy Holidays!

Fighting Cancer At Monroe Carrell The holiday season allows opportunities to grow compassion toward neighbors and friends. Taking action doesn’t have to be grandiose. The simple kindnesses of donating a phone charger, a fresh pack of crayons, fidget spinners or tasty snacks could provide just the right kind of encouragement to fellow humans going through tough times. Brentwood Lifestyle celebrates Chase Hartung, Rowan Eby and Kat Edwards, three cancer warriors who are making a difference in their community by undertaking the challenge

to make hospital stays easier for other kids who are dealing with cancer. In honor of September’s Childhood Cancer Awareness Month, Chase, Rowan, Kat and their families hosted a carnival-themed toy and snack donation drive in their Brentwood neighborhood. Donations benefitted the Hematology & Oncology Department at Monroe Carell Jr. Children’s Hospital at Vanderbilt. The effort is ongoing, and Lifestyle readers can contribute by going online to the Hem/Onc and Infusion Wish List link included toward the conclusion of this article.

ROWAN, CHASE AND KAT: THREE CANCER WARRIORS AND THEIR FAMILIES GIVE BACK

Even as they walk through their life-altering experiences, Chase, Rowan and Kat have chosen to reach out and help others. To honor them, we are spotlighting their journeys.

CHASE HARTUNG Chase Hartung, an eighth grader at Sunset Middle School, is undergoing treatment for relapsed Ewing’s Sarcoma. His mother, Cindy Hartung, shared the following with Brentwood Lifestyle: “In the fall of 2021, Chase started to experience some leg pain while playing football for Brentwood Blaze. We thought it was a pulled hamstring, and with a little rest, the pain seemed to dissipate. As football season ended and Thanksgiving came, the pain came back with an intensity that could not be ignored. After a few doctor visits and an ultimate referral to Monroe Carell, Chase was diagnosed with stage 4 or Metastatic Ewings Sarcoma. Chase underwent nine months of intense chemotherapy and radiation treatment and achieved remission," Cindy shared. She added, "This past June, routine scans showed that Chase had relapsed. Chase is currently undergoing treatment at Monroe Carell. It is hard for me to put into words what Monroe Carell means to me. To say it means everything would be an understatement. Vanderbilt Children's Hospital is a second home to our family." Cindy says they feel incredibly lucky to be so close to one of the best cancer hospitals in the nation. "We have met many families who have traveled hours or had to relocate to get treatment at Vanderbilt. The oncology staff makes the hospital extra special. When we arrive at the 6th floor, we are always greeted with smiles and hugs and are filled with a sense of hope, comfort and healing." Chase’s oncologist, Dr. Borinstein, saved our son’s life, she continues. "We are forever grateful for his knowledge, expertise, guidance and compassion. Dr. B and the staff will always be our heroes! Childhood Cancer Research is severely underfunded. Only 4% of the Federal Cancer Research Budget is dedicated to childhood cancers.

My understanding is this is because childhood cancers are rarer than adulthood cancers, making it very important to donate to private, reputable pediatric cancer research foundations.” Find updates about Chase at: CaringBridge.org/ Visit/ChaseHartung

ROWAN EBY Rowan Eby is a kindergartner at Battle Ground Academy and is undergoing treatment for leukemia. His mom, Sara Eby, wrote about the family's experiences: “Our journey with childhood cancer is devastating and sad and unfair. I would love to say something positive, but there is nothing positive about childhood cancer. It isn’t fair to the child, the siblings or the parents. It is a rollercoaster of emotions and a lot of sadness," shares Sara. "Kids are resilient, and Rowan is a fighter and so brave, and so amazing. He amazes me daily. He is usually found with a smile as long as he feels good. The children’s ward has been nothing but kind, and I count on them as my rock. I believe they are the best and are working to make my Rowan healthy again. They are always kind and have answers or will get answers," she adds. "When we had to stay overnight for 10 nights in May 2022, the doctors, nurses, life specialists and care team were there with so much patience and kindness. I am grateful. I still walk on eggshells until we ring that bell, but I’m not sure a parent ever really breathes without worry after having a child with cancer. Will it come back? Will he be OK? Did I do something to cause this? Will my other sons get it? Why did he?" Sara poses. "The best way readers can help is to donate to childhood cancer research, donate toys and snacks to the hospital, 6th-floor oncology, and read the pages of CaringBridge. A Noble Angel Is Awarded In Williamson County Angel Noble Recognized For Her Philanthropic Efforts ARTICLE BY MARY COMPTON

How can Angel Noble best be described? Well, her friend and coworker Jesselyn Dudinsky says it best: “Angel is an angel.” Angel Noble runs a nonprofit called Mission of Truth, which helps children in Haiti who suffer from poverty, hunger and homelessness. She has organized a team of workers, volunteers, family and friends to provide for the physical, spiritual and medical needs of orphans there. Due to her philanthropy work, Angel won the 2023 Wesley Mortgage Williamson County Hero Award for her exceptional work with MOTO, a recognition she received in August. She thought she was meeting with a potential new partner, but Knoxville Chief of Police Don Green was there to present the award, as he was the one who nominated her. Angel says she previously met Chief Green when she was going out to dinner one night. Don was wearing a Harley Davidson jacket, and because Angel and her husband, Peter, both drive Harleys she struck up a conversation with him. When asked what she did, Angel says she shared about her foundation in Haiti, and how it helps children escape from poverty, sex trafficking and homelessness. Being in the police force, many of these issues are prevalent to the chief, and he says he found himself impressed and could relate to her cause. At the time, Angel didn't know the impact she had on the police chief, who later nominated her for this award. After many visits to Haiti, Angel and Peter Noble noticed the need to help protect children from trauma and harm. As a result, Mission of Truth was started

in 2018. Haiti is the poorest country in the Western Hemisphere and suffers from issues like hunger, gang violence and poor education. Along with the award, Angel received 14 tickets to the Tennessee Titans home games. Angel and her loved ones get to watch the home games from the Wesley Mortgage deck. At one game, they showed her picture with the children on the jumbotron to inspire others and in recognition of her contributions and dedication. When given the award, Angel says she was shocked. “I didn’t know whether to laugh or cry,” she admits. “I am just an unpaid professional at loving people.” What makes a hero to Angel? Anyone with a servant’s heart. Her heroes are her "loving husband who supports and encourages her and is along for the ride." She also admires the teachings of Jesus and wants to follow in his example. Angel says she's also inspired by military men and women who serve the United States. "I truly love the Haitian people and am constantly inspired by them. They just long for a relationship and a heart connection,” she explains. “They are resilient. They look for joy, they are just beautiful.” Growing up was hard for Angel, she admits. She left home at a young age and due to what she went through, she felt led to help others. Those who have experienced trauma from abandonment or abuse are close to her heart. The nonprofit cares for the children through trauma therapy. They have two psychologists on staff, as well as a nurse and director of discipleship.

“They (Haitian people) just long for a relationship and a heart connection,” explains Angel Noble, co-founder and director of Mission of Truth. “They are resilient. They look for joy, they are just beautiful.”

When the Haitian children reach the ages of 16 to 18, they graduate from the program and go onto an “age-out” program. MOTO helps them get into college or school, or find a job within the community. The MOTO nonprofit mentors the children into adulthood. Around this age, it is especially important to help because sometimes the children join gangs or get sex trafficked. MOTO has 13 staff members and has helped 167 orphans.

This Giving Campaign is all about personally impacting the lives of people we know with an unexpected check in the mail just to say that someone thought of them this holiday season.”

The annual City Lifestyle Giving Campaign is in its 4th year. Last holiday season we gave away over $300,000 to help 116 individuals and families in need, but we need your help to make it happen again this year. With nominations flooding in from community members and leaders such as judges, police officers, teachers, nurses, social workers, mentors and readers like you, we were able to reach people who might otherwise go unnoticed. Perhaps you know of a single parent struggling to provide for their family, an elderly person who has experienced loss, someone enduring a health issue, a co-worker suffering a sudden, unexpected tragedy or a neighbor with a financial hardship who has fallen between the cracks of getting assistance. Chances are you know someone with a specific need, even if no one else does. “We believe in giving back and serving the communities where we live in a real and tangible way,” says Steven Schowengerdt, CEO and founder of City Lifestyle. “This Giving Campaign is about personally impacting the lives of people we know with an unexpected check in the mail just to say that someone thought of them during this holiday season.” “We believe God has blessed our company with continued success, so we in turn want to be a blessing to others,” Matthew Perry, President of City Lifestyle adds. City Lifestyle has also enacted an internal giving program whereby every employee in the company receives $100 to give away to someone in the community. “The idea is to encourage our employees to keep giving on their own,” Steven says. “Taking care of one another and blessing others is truly rewarding and it perpetuates a cycle of giving. It’s extremely important to me as a person and as a company to foster a culture of generosity.”

Rose Aldrich, Lauren Brigance, May Massie and Robyn Thorpe can all get ready for their hot dates in less than 2 minutes. Actually, in less than 1 minute and 30 seconds flat, according to Brentwood standards. Only these hot dates are not what one might think; they are emergency fire and rescue calls, as these women are the first all-women fire squad for the Brentwood Fire and Rescue Department. Before going on calls, they check their gear, meds, pull hoses, equipment and truck, and ensure everything is ready to go before heading out the fire station door. Due to the fact these women wear gear that weighs up to 80 pounds, they train every day to ensure they're up to standard. These firefighters are from all around the country but have found themselves in Brentwood to pursue their dreams of helping others. They all have different reasons for joining the squad but together, they're earning the reputation of making the perfect team. Lauren Brigance has been a firefighter for the Brentwood team for a year now but has previously worked for two years in Columbia, Tennessee. When Lauren was 16 years old, she and her family experienced a house fire. While observing the firefighters in action, she says she became intrigued about becoming a firefighter herself. "I admired how selfless and brave these civil servants were," she says. This sparked her interest, and she decided to start a career as a fighter herself and currently, she has seen around 20 fires in her career.

Robyn Thorpe has served as a firefighter, paramedic and engineer for the last 7.5 years. She also is the one who drives the fire trucks. When she was young, she says she loved watching firefighting movies, which she admits played a role in her becoming one. "One movie, Back Draft; was especially thrilling," she adds. Robyn, as well as being a firefighter, also participates in community programs such as Camp Hope. Camp Hope is a fire program run every year by Vanderbilt University, and it brings together children who have been victims of burns. It helps them know they are not alone and gives them a sense of community. This camp hosts children from across the country who get to participate in fun activities like water balloon fights, games and other creative activities. Robyn is a first-generation firefighter and when she told her family she wanted to be one, they were supportive of her decision, but her mother, worried for her safety, just told her, “I’m going to pray for you.” May Massie joined the group in 2022, but has been a firefighter since 2018. She says becoming a firefighter wasn't her original plan, but she felt the desire to help others and prevent emergencies. "Despite any obstacle, if you have your mind set on it you can do it, don't let anyone tell you different," May says. These women make up an incredible team and have quite the support system rooting for them and their accomplishments. "My friends love it because they don't know too many women firemen, so they think it's awesome," May says. So, what is it like walking into a fire? They explain that firefighters revert to their training. “It’s all muscle memory,” Robyn explains. “It’s scary, but we are very well prepared for it,” Lauren states confidently. “It is not a male or female job. Whether you are a male or female, you must have courage, ambition, moral character and a love for the job,” Robyn explains.

This fire squad confirms they have good faith in each other, as they depend on one another and trust each other with their lives. Their friendship is evident upon seeing them together and spending time with them. They have a great source of drive, discipline and courage. CONTINUED >

When this group first formed, “It was like everything came together. The stars all aligned. It was just meant to be,” Lauren says. These firefighting women say they love it when community members come around. The fire stations are always open, and the firefighters love when the public visit, ask questions or share their appreciation for all their hard work. It is all about the community for these women and keeping the community safe and protected.
