In this season of giving thanks, we often reflect on the many blessings in our lives. The true spirit of Thanksgiving encourages the conscious expression of gratitude. Its focus is spending time with those that you love and encourages giving back in a meaningful way. While ambition, competition, and accomplishing goals can be very healthy, forgetting to place importance on being present, enjoying the ride, and appreciating those around us who have helped us along in our journey, can leave us missing out on what truly matters. We’ll never be content if we look outside ourselves and at our possessions or titles to determine if we are fulfilled. True contentment comes from within and from fulfilling who we were made to be. In this season of life, I find myself most thankful for my relationships. I graduated from the University of Arkansas this past May, took a leap of faith, and moved to Nashville. What could have been a rough transition was made much easier thanks to the incredible support system I have that’s made up of friends, family, and those who work at the magazine with me. This move reminded me how important it is to be intentional with your relationships, and while I may not live in the same city with some of my friends or family members, I am truly never alone and I am forever thankful for that. Our November issue is dedicated to stories of gathering, gratefulness, and giving back to our community. We are so thankful for the residents and businesses in our community who support so many wonderful organizations and help make our city the vibrant community it is. We are especially thankful for our advertising partners who help bring this magazine to your doorsteps each month. They are part of our vision and purpose of bringing inspiring stories and the good news of the community directly to you. As we prepare to gather with our loved ones let’s set time aside to consider what makes life meaningful and reflect on those blessings.

CONSISTENT WORKOUT routines

Workout space at BFT, the newest exercise studio to open in Brentwood, looks different every day. Some days they set up treadmills, bikes and rowing machines for a cardio-focused workout. On others, it will be a “pump” or “power” class that emphasizes weights and strength training. Then, there are classes that are a combination of the two, all designed to complement each other and be completed in sequence. “BFT is designed for people to be here six days a week,” says Brentwood studio owner Mark Wilkerson. “If you collectively come six days in a row, this is all about creating good habits. You get a lot of people that go to the gym erratically. I’ll go two days, get super sore, and then I don’t go next week because I don’t want to feel that bad again. Getting people to realize that, hey, you don’t have to go every day and beat your head against the wall and leave with your tongue on the floor to make the changes you want. What we’re trying to do here is change body composition and help you create new habits with lasting results.” At BFT, the workouts are part of a nine-week program that begins and ends with a strength and body composition assessment. During BFT workouts, participants wear a heart rate monitor to ensure that they're getting their heart rate into the optimal zone for that particular workout, and increasing or decreasing it throughout based on the goal for that day. The BFT coaches act as personal trainers, whether that’s helping with questions about certain exercises or encouraging everyone when it’s time to challenge themselves and try to lift more weight. The average class lasts 50 minutes, and there is always one trainer for every 12 participants, says Mark. The workout space has room for 36 people per class, and they focus on creating an encouraging atmosphere. “Everybody's high fiving and fist bumping and encouraging one another,” says Mark, who also emphasizes how efficient the BFT workouts are. “I used to do these long-strength workouts, as opposed to condensing it and getting it done in a timely fashion, like we do here.” As for who should come to a class, Mark says their workouts are for everyone. “We have people of all fitness levels. Some that have never worked out before and some that are really experienced that still need coaching,” he says. “We are a hybrid group fitness/personal training studio. A group fitness atmosphere with personal training attention.” Brentwood is a great spot for his first location in part because the national company that owns BFT also owns StretchLab, their neighbor in the Hill Center on Franklin Road. BFT had a soft opening this summer and officially launched in September. Eventually, Mark says he plans to open more locations in the greater Nashville area. Consistency is key to the BFT philosophy, so the studio uses a membership model. If someone wants to check out the studio before committing, they offer one free trial class, or, those interested can sign up for a membership with a seven-day cancellation policy. That way, people can try it out for a week and get the full picture of what the workout program is like before deciding if it is for them, Mark adds. There’s nothing quite like feeling thankful whilst indulging in a delicious Thanksgiving dinner surrounded by loved ones. Traditional Thanksgiving turkey recipes have their charm, but maybe let this be the year you elevate your grandma’s traditional turkey recipe. Culinary innovation has led to kitchen creativity and now there are a multitude of ways to serve Thanksgiving turkey. From frying to grilling, the possibilities are endless. Here are two recipes that may turn into new, beloved, Thanksgiving traditions:

De ep Fr ie d Tu rkey Recipe credit: ASpicyPerspective.com INGREDIENTS • Whole Turkey (thawed completely) • Cooking Oil • Turkey Injecting Marinade • Turkey Dry Rub Seasoning DRY RUB SEASONING: • 3 tablespoons lemon pepper seasoning • 1 tablespoon poultry seasoning • 1 tablespoon salt • 2 teaspoons garlic powder • 2 teaspoons onion powder DIRECTIONS 1. Thaw the turkey, if frozen. To properly thaw a frozen turkey in the refrigerator allow approximately 24 hours for every 4 pounds. Fill the deep fryer halfway with oil and heat to 375°F. Remove giblets and neck. If present, remove and discard the plastic leg holder and pop-up timer. Rinse the turkey thoroughly with warm water, or completely cover it with warm water and soak for no more than 30 minutes to ensure the cavity is free of ice. 2. Set out a small bowl for the dry rub. In the bowl, combine all the dry seasonings and mix well. 3. Set out a measuring pitcher for the injecting marinade. In the pitcher combine the oil, water, lemon juice, mustard, salt, poultry seasoning and garlic powder. Whisk well to emulsify the mixture. 4. Pat the turkey completely dry on the outside and inside of the cavity with paper towels. Using a marinade injection syringe, inject 1/2 cup of the marinade in each breast. Inject 1/4 cup marinade into each leg and thigh. 5. Sprinkle the turkey generously with turkey dry rub seasoning, completely coating the outside of the turkey and the inside of the cavity. 6. Place the turkey, breast side up, in the fryer basket. Slowly lower the basket into hot oil, being careful not to splatter the hot oil. Fry turkey for 3 to 4 minutes per pound. Lift the basket from the hot oil slowly. Insert a meat thermometer in the meaty part of the breast; turkey is done when it reads 165°F. If the turkey is not done, lower it carefully back into the oil for an additional 5 minutes. Once the turkey reaches the desired internal temp (minimum 165°F), remove it from the oil.

7. Allow the turkey to rest and drain in the fryer basket for 10 minutes before removing it for carving. The turkey can remain in the basket to cool until ready to serve. CONTINUED > NOVEMB ER 2 0 2 3

DIRECTIONS 1. The night before grilling the turkey, remove any giblets and the neck and pat the turkey dry with paper towels. Place the turkey in a large baking dish. 2. Remove the turkey from the fridge one hour or so before grilling

INGREDIENTS • Whole turkey • 2 onions, halved • 2 to 3 sliced lemons • 1 bulb of garlic, top sliced off • 1 large bunch of fresh herbs, including sage, thyme, and rosemary. • 8 to 12 tablespoons unsalted butter, softened (enough to cover the entire turkey) • Kosher salt • Black pepper • Dried herbs (sage, thyme and rosemary) • 2 cups chicken stock

3. Preheat grill to medium-high heat, about 450°F. Prepare a stack of disposable foil roasting pans (about 2 or 3 pans) stacked together. 4. Place the turkey in a roasting pan, breast-side up. Fill the cavity with 1 halved onion, 1 lemon, the garlic bulb, and a bunch of fresh herbs. Tie the legs loosely together with kitchen twine. Tuck the wings under the turkey. 5. Rub the turkey all over with the softened butter. Sprinkle it with salt and pepper. OPTIONAL: sprinkle on dried herbs, such as thyme, sage and rosemary. 6. Pour 1 to 2 cups chicken stock into the bottom of the roasted pan. Add the other lemon wedges and onions. 7. Place the roasting pan on the grill and turn the center burner to medium-low. Close the lid and keep the temperature between 425 to 450 °F during cooking time. 8. Grill the turkey for 2.5 to 3 hours, checking the turkey every 30 minutes. Halfway through the cook time, rotate the roasting pan and add more stock to the bottom of the pan if needed. 9. After 2.5 hours, check the turkey. Cook the meat until the temperature taken in the thigh reaches 180 °F. Once the turkey is finished, let it rest for 30 to 60 minutes before slicing.

"We like to do special things for our guests, so if they’re coming for a child’s birthday, we’ll provide s’mores, or if they’re here on their honeymoon, we’ll provide champagne.” Every home features a custom-made fire pit that guests can sit around to relax, chat and make delicious s’mores, and all but one have swimming pools. Indoors, there are game rooms with at minimum a pool table; the larger properties offer a fully-stocked game room with a poker table and poker set up, shuffleboard, a Pac Man machine and more. There’s even a theater. Owners Grant and Amy Curran make a great team. Amy designs the properties and Grant works on the construction and renovation aspects of this family business. “Amy's done a wonderful job of designing all these cabins and we work together to put in many nice features,” says Grant. “We make sure that the homes are very stylish and comfortable.” They’ve renovated nine of the properties and built five so far. “The Smoky Mountains attract so many families and we noticed when we first moved here [from Texas] that a lot of the properties had the old orange pine walls and many looked the same,” says Amy. “We thought we could do well building and renovating properties that would provide a modern and clean feel.” Every home they build and most of the homes they’ve renovated have en suite bathrooms for every bedroom. One of their favorite properties is called Jackpot, and it’s easy to understand why. “Our newest property has six bedrooms and the best views of the Smoky Mountains,” says Amy. “The design is mountain modern with earth tones and a very clean feel. It also has a heated pool, which is unique among the rest of our properties.” Adds Grant, “We put in floor-to-ceiling glass and plan to do that more often because it’s like bringing the outdoors in.” The couple plan to grow the business, and are currently building three more properties ranging from four to nine bedrooms. On average, guests tend to book long weekends, staying for three nights, but in

the summer months and during the holidays, most stay for about a week. Parents especially appreciate the pack and play, high chairs and baby gates installed at every stairway in every home. For pet lovers, there are two pet-friendly properties. Cloud 9 Cabins are fully stocked with linens, kitchenware, coffee makers, and everything else needed for a no-fuss vacation. Grocery delivery is also available. “We definitely understand that we're in the hospitality business and we make everyone feel welcome,” says Grant. “We’re available at all times and are happy to get our guests whatever they need.” Adds Amy, “We like to do special things for our guests, so if they’re coming for a child’s birthday, we’ll provide s’mores, or if they’re here on their honeymoon, we’ll provide champagne.” When guests want to venture outdoors, there are plenty of things to do in the area. “The Great Smoky Mountains National Park is a great place to hike; there are many beautiful waterfalls,” she says. “Also, we like to joke that the strip in Gatlinburg is like the Las Vegas strip, but for families, with putt-putt places and dinner shows.” Dollywood is close by and a great place to visit, and the Gatlinburg SkyBridge provides great views of the mountains and foliage. Guests often enjoy visiting the many moonshine distilleries in the area as well. The couple also offer discounts to military personnel and first responders. “We want to thank them for their service,” says Grant. “Amy used to be a nurse and this is an easy way for us to give back.” The couple live in Sevierville with Woody, their mini goldendoodle, and when not making others’ vacation dreams come true, they like to travel themselves. “One of our favorite hobbies is skiing, which we typically go to Colorado to do,” says Amy. Nonprofit 'Shower The People' Lend Helping Hand To Homeless

In the midst of the bustling city that is Nashville, homelessness remains a consistent and heart-wrenching issue. Amidst the crisis, there are shining beacons of hope and compassion for those who face homelessness. One nonprofit in particular, Shower the People, is dedicated to restoring humanity and showcasing compassion, one mobile shower at a time. Shower the People has been operating since 2017, when a group of members from Green Street Church of Christ purchased a bus and transformed it into a safe place where those who need it are welcome to come and have access to showers. The bus pops up at several different locations throughout the week to make the showers even more accessible. They also give out free pairs of undergarments and socks as well as offer laundry services to those who need it. Meredith MacLeoud, Shower the People executive director and co-founder, is one of the many dedicated people that make the organization possible. “I always like to make sure that people remember the folks we serve are not lazy,” says Meredith. “A lot of them have some mental health issues, or disabilities, or things out of their control that have led them to be homeless, and just remember that when interacting with them.” The bus is a 1990 International 3800 school bus with two full private bathrooms on board and the ability to connect to the hydrant system. Additionally, the bus can catch/carry 200 gallons of water for when a hydrant system is not available. The bus appears at four different locations throughout the week. Currently, the bus can be found at Trinity Community Commons on Tuesdays from 4:30-6:40 p.m., the Oasis Center on Wednesdays from 10 a.m. to noon, Belmont Church from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m., and Fridays at the City Road Church in Madison from 6-9 p.m. Wherever they go, people show up. Typically, the nonprofit serves approximately 100120 people a week between the four locations, and currently provide laundry services for 12 families. On top of that, those involved with the organization are trained social workers and equipped to help them through the trauma they have undergone.

“We are just a safe space for people to come to and I feel like we have to be,” says Meredith. “They feel very comfortable telling me they need help with food stamps, or that they’re ready for recovery, or if they’re in a domestic violence situation once they’ve kind of built up that trust with us.” Ending homelessness is not something that can be accomplished overnight. However, with organizations, such as Shower the People, it’s a step in the right direction. With guidance and a support system, the journey becomes easier and their seemingly small acts of kindness go a long way for those with whom they interact. Despite the organization’s name, Shower the People offers more than showers to those in need. “We do a lot of housing navigation although we’re not housing navigators, we also do a lot of resource navigation although we’re not resource navigators,” Meredith says. “Our goal is to just make people’s lives a little better when we are not with them, whether it’s from giving them hygiene supplies, or give them a shower, or help them figure out this stress of applying for food stamps or something like that. I always tell people I always have a hard time telling people no if it’s a hard thing they’re asking. So as long as we can do it, we’ll do it and if we can’t, we will find someone who can.” While Shower the People does not have any fundraisers coming up, they are focusing on their winter push, which Meredith references as “Making Nashville a Kinder, Warmer Winter.” This push is centered around on gathering more supplies. Getting these supplies are the organization's biggest expensive as they provide nearly 100 pairs of underwear and socks to those in need on a weekly basis. They also always appreciate some extra helping hands. “We can do so much more if we had more people,” says Meredith. “But people need money, so obviously funding would enable us to hire more people and make a bigger impact.” Shower the People reminds people that in the face of homelessness, that there is hope, one shower at a time. 615.800.8985 ShowerThePeople.net

Eric, who is now the event producer, started this event to honor his grandfather, Thomas Smith, (aka Grandbuddy) who not only fought in WWII but also served the country in Korea and Vietnam. His grandfather never told a soul about what he did whilst serving, and to this day Eric does not know. “His honor to never tell and stay true to his oath is why I chose to start this event. I want to honor all of the men and women who have served this country simply because without them our rights, freedoms, and country don’t exist,” Eric says. His goal is to grow this event until Nashville is the epicenter of Veteran’s Day and is able to raise as enough awareness and support for all veterans as possible. Tickets range from $30-$75 each. Each year, Nov. 11 is a reminder to honor and commemorate the brave military men and women who have served America. While there are many ways to commend veterans, music is one inspiring path for honoring these heroes. Indeed, Eric Byford co-founded the Music City Cares Veterans Day Benefit Show to bring everyone together for such tributes and to show appreciation. The 4th Annual Music City Cares Veterans Day show will take place on Veterans Day and will honor three veterans with “Gratitude of Service” Awards. The first Music City Cares Veterans Day Benefit Show was launched in 2018 with nine artists. This year, the event has grown to 15 artists and will take place at the Texas Troubadour Nashville. “I knew then I wanted to make Nashville the example to the rest of the world how we honor our veterans with what we do best, live music,” Eric says.

Iceland is blessed with great natural beauty, and while everyone talks about the Blue Lagoon, which certainly isn’t to be missed, my favorite spot was Jokulsarlon (pronounced Yo-cool-sar-loon.) Jokulsarlon is a stunning lagoon where large chunks of ice break off the glacier and drift through the bay, changing color with the light. If you travel in the fall, climb aboard a zodiac boat and cruise the icy bay while listening to the sounds of glacier calving or even a harbor seal frolicking in the water. Across the bridge on the other side of the lagoon is a black sand beach where chunks of ice have washed up making the shore glitter like diamonds. This occurrence crowned the stretch of beach “Diamond Beach.” Come back inland to fall in love with waterfalls, geysers and hot springs. Waterfalls are not in short supply in Iceland (although they do freeze solid in the winter), and each one is more spectacular than the last. There are literally dozens of them, but my favorites were Seljalandsfoss, Gullfoss and Skogafoss. Each has short, flat trails that lead right up to the waterfalls, and the cool, crisp air makes for a perfect hike. CONTINUED >

After trekking the countryside, some relaxing is definitely in order. Enter the Insta-famous jewel in Iceland’s crown, the Blue Lagoon, right outside the capital of Reykjavik. The Blue Lagoon is a geothermal heated lagoon located in a lava field, and yes, it really is that bright blue you see on social media. However, the real star is the spa. Through the Retreat Hotel, you can book from an array of packages, including private changing rooms, swim up champagne bars, and some of the best spa experiences on the planet. I, of course, was determined to sample a little bit of everything. After indulging in the champagne, wrapped in a fluffy robe, I reveled in a 2-hour full head to toe body scrub, facial mask, and an hour-long floating lagoon massage. It was one of the most amazing days I have ever had. There is something for everyone in Iceland and it should be on everyone’s bucket list. Fun fact about Iceland: Traditionally, on Christmas Eve, books are exchanged and then everyone spends the rest of the night reading them, curled up in front of the fire eating chocolate. If anyone needs me, that is what I’ll be doing this Christmas Eve.

Fans of Squeeze indicate it's a 'way better' massage experience. “It’s hard to believe that our [Squeeze] Brentwood shop has been serving middle Tennessee for an entire year. The Brentwood team is definitely dedicated to Squeeze’s mission of offering a better massage experience," says Brittany Driscoll, the company's co-founder and CEO. "Kevin and his team have worked overtime to help people prioritize their physical and mental wellness over the past year." Kevin Brothen is Squeeze Nashville operating partner. He explains the shop's uniqueness at 7011 Executive Center Drive within CityPark Brentwood background materials of the mixed-use community: “Not only is Squeeze providing a way better massage experience, but it's a way better franchising experience, making every step of the way a streamlined and

seamless process. Squeeze is disrupting the massage industry and I’m honored to be a part of it at the forefront.” The Brentwood location was the second in the country to open. "I know this first year is only the beginning for them," Brittany adds. The first Squeeze location launched during March 2019 in Studio City, California. The Brentwood Squeeze 2,500-square-foot location is across from Just Love Coffee and in between Juice Bar and Blaze Pizza. It has eight massage suites and offers customizable, quality-driven options, all included in the price of a massage. According to the company's website, the Squeeze revolutionary app-based booking platform allows guests to book, set personalized preferences, pay, tip, rate and review all at the touch of a button so they can "walk in and figuratively float out." Massages are tailored to guests’ preferences, per the website, including pressure, music and lighting. Guests also have the ability to tap a “ready button” letting the therapist know to return in-room to begin the massage. Each massage appointment includes a choice of deep tissue, heat therapy, percussion therapy and aromatherapy at no additional charge. There are two membership options from which to choose. The Mid-Squeeze includes one 50-minute massage each month for $95 and the Main Squeeze encompasses one 80-minute massage each month for $125. Both memberships allow clients to book additional massages at discounted member rates.

Additionally, Squeeze team members have partnered with Canine Companions, a nonprofit organization dedicated to enhancing the lives of people with disabilities by providing expertly trained service dogs at no charge to the recipient. For every Squeeze membership sold, Brittany says the business is helping to provide a day of canine support to a person with a disability. Prior to launching Squeeze, Brittany spent four years running marketing for Drybar where she helped take the company from $30 million to $100plus million. She also opened more than 50 new shops and launched the Drybar product line internationally, as well as in Sephora, Ulta and Nordstrom. Before Drybar, Brittany spent more than a decade in marketing and advertising at agencies, including Mistress (Mattel, The Coca-Cola Company, Hilton Worldwide), RAPP (Skype, Toyota) and experiential agency USMP (Home Depot).
