Summer is the perfect time to come up with a bucket list of activities to enjoy and ways to unwind and relax. Some of the best summers spent are often not filled with constant activities and trips, but are those that reflect a slower pace and simple moments of enjoying those around us. Although the “lazy days of summer” isn’t always something we can attain with our packed schedules, it is so refreshing to take some time to slow down and enjoy some of the simple pleasures that remind us of our own childhoods. Some of the best times spent can be a backyard barbecue with friends, making s’mores by a fire pit, spending a day on the water, eating ice cream on a hot summer day, or simply taking in the night sky with someone you love. In this issue, we wanted to share about some of the happenings around our city this summer and ways to get out and explore together. In addition, it is our privilege to shine a light on local veterans in our community and to thank them for their service in honor of the Fourth of July. We have an immense respect for the men and women who make the selfless decision to serve and protect our nation. There is no greater sacrifice than to risk your life in order to protect others. The team at Lifestyle wants to thank all veterans, those still serving and all of their loved ones for your service. I hope you are able to enjoy some of the many things our city offers during these hot days of summer and that you make memories with those around you that you love.

Boiling Spring Academy In-Person Open Houses Available In-person open houses for Brentwood’s Boiling Spring Academy returned for this year on every third Sunday of the month through October. The open houses are held from 2-4 p.m. in the restored 1832 one-room schoolhouse located in Primm Historic Park on Moores Lane. Visitors can bike or walkup to the schoolhouse using the greenway from Brentwood’s Crockett or Smith Parks. Heritage Foundation Announces 2022 List Of Ten Sites To Save Heritage Foundation of Williamson County representatives announced properties to be most at-risk in the county and efforts to help preserve them. On the "2022 Sites to Save list" was Brentwood location: FriersonVoorhies Cemetery. It's the final physical reminder of the once-thriving African American Hardscuffle community in Brentwood. Founded just after the Civil War by formerly enslaved people, it began to decline after community members sold their property during the construction of the nearby Interstate 65. Brentwood High Schools Rank Among Best In Tennessee, US Brentwood's two local high schools remain among the highest-ranked, nonmagnet schools in Tennessee, according to the recently released US News and World Report's 2022 Best High Schools ln America list. Creating A Modern Home In The Heart Of Brentwood And Landmark Location

When the original homestead of the Oman neighborhood at 7004 Crews Lane in Brentwood came onto the real estate market, everyone realized available, coveted land tracts in that private location are rare. Oman encompasses 34 acres with 21 lots off Franklin Road, and this manor spot is extra special. The professional team of Nashville builder HV Urban, a subsidiary of luxury builder Hidden Valley Homes, state they relished fully remodeling the residence down to the studs. Lauren Spangler, HV Urban sales/marketing director, confirms they all expected the home to reveal a certain charm, but that its true character was spectacular. "We wanted to keep some of the unique characteristics of the estate home, and were able to with the entry's curved banister staircase, interior cobblestone pavers in hallway, and the original fireplaces. Our vision was to take it from traditional to transition," she says. "It was a good challenge for us as a company to take on a different project from new construction luxury homes. Our owners, John MacCauley and Jim Spangler, had fun transitioning this and it has become one the finer estate homes in Brentwood."

The architect for the renovation is Andrew Scott, founder and design director at August House Co. The real estate agent who listed and sold the home, LCT Team–Parks Realtor Lisa Culp Taylor, says this stately, spacious home combines the best of both worlds. With an incredible location in Brentwood, Lisa shares the home is surrounded by gorgeous landscaping. She says many people enjoyed the house's open floor plan and finishing touches, such as six fireplaces. Its pool with a 1,243 square-foot pool house is coming in handy this summer. Located on 2.58 acres, the five-bedroom home also has five garages. "I was honored to participate in the process of its reimaging with the smart and talented builder, HV Urban, and the architect, Andrew Scott," says Lisa. This was a unique project for many reasons, she adds, beginning with the redesign being done around the home’s mature landscape and existing magnolia trees, which are actually protected by the City of Brentwood. "Taken down to the studs, we were all impressed by the original craftsmanship. There's a brick loggia

kept in the house's main part, and has become a focal point of the home. The reclaimed brick floor is now surrounded by beautiful windows. In the study, the brick was also revealed during construction and the exposed brick was kept," Lisa explains. The pool was also original and was restyled and rebuilt. She says she really loves seeing original elements of this home become an interesting part of its future. "Today, the Oman homestead has new chapters ahead and blends beautifully with the architecture of its namesake neighborhood. A sweet conclusion to the project for me was the sale of the renovated home for just over $6 million to the clients of fellow team Realtor, Amy Pappas,” concludes Lisa. 1) WHEN DID YOU MOVE TO THE AREA? I grew up in a few different places but moved to Nashville as soon as I feasibly could. I was a hardcore musician, and that’s what brought me here. It’s everything I hoped it would be: an amazing and vibrant city filled with a greater concentration of high-level creative talent than I’ve seen in any other city on Earth.

2) HOW DOES LIVING IN TENNESSEE PLAY INTO YOUR WRITING? It’s the place that I love most and all of my books are chronicles of what I most love at the time I’m writing them. With the commitments in my life (day job, family, master's program), the one thing I don’t have time to do when I write a new book is to figure out a whole, new, radically different place. I think I write a richer book when I write what I know.

3) TELL US ABOUT YOUR TIME IN THE MUSIC INDUSTRY. My years as a musician taught me a few crucial things: First, that there’s always another song/story. When I get blocked up as a writer and think the well’s gone dry, I remember the number of times I thought that as a musician, only for a new song to follow just a little while later. Second, that there’s a tone and a voice and preoccupation to what I write. It’s okay to love all sorts of stories, just as I loved (and love) all sorts of music. But just as there was a type of music that I make, there is a sort of story that I tell. And I try to honor that each time I write.

4) RECENTLY, YOU WERE MENTIONED ON “GOOD MORNING AMERICA” BY EMILY HENRY, BESTSELLING AUTHOR OF BOOK PEOPLE AND BEACH READS. WERE YOU SURPRISED? It was so awesome!! My mom was visiting me and she got to see it happen. Seeing your son’s book on Good Morning America is very much the sort of accolade that a mom understands. I was not surprised. Emily and I have been buds since 2013 or so, long before either of us had a book deal, so she texted me beforehand to tell me to expect it. It’s been an exciting trajectory to go from shooting the breeze about nonsense on Twitter to her texting me to tell me she’d be on Good Morning America plugging my book. No one on Earth deserves success more than her.

5) WHAT ARE SOME THINGS YOU LOVE ABOUT NASHVILLE AND THE BELLE MEADE AREA? Where Nashville gets underrated is on natural beauty and outdoor recreation. I love our proximity to state parks. And the Warner Parks in Belle Meade are some of the best urban outdoor recreation ever.

Music City Grand Prix Returns

Six Reasons To Get Enthused About This Year’s Race ARTICLE BY DELIA JO RAMSEY For one weekend only, the cacophony of live music from honkytonks, party buses blaring Shania Twain, sirens, and shrieking woo girls in downtown Nashville will be drowned out by the sound of roaring engines and a spectacle of speed. IndyCar returns to Nashville Aug. 5-7, 2022, with the Big Machine Music City Grand Prix. Last year was the first-ever event, and it was one for the books. Get ready to hear those engines revving on downtown’s city streets when the Indycar race returns for its second year. Three-day Grand Prix ticket packages begin at $129, and tickets include admission into every concert in addition to the daily racing activities.

1. It’s Grammy Award-winning superstar Tim McGraw’s only stop in Tennessee during his 2022 tour. The legendary music artist is set to perform at 8:30 p.m. on Saturday, 6 as part of the Big Machine Music City Grand Prix weekend at the Nissan Stadium campus. The show will take place on the ZYN Main Stage and will be followed by a fireworks show on the riverfront that can be seen from the concert location. All Big Machine Music City Grand Prix tickets for that day include free access to the show. The McGraw performance is just the first of three concerts to be announced as part of the Grand Prix’s three-night series from Aug. 5-7.

A rare Grand Ole Opry Live performance is part of the weekend’s festivities. For the second consecutive year, a Grand Ole Prix show will take place on Sunday evening following the race. The lineup for the special show will feature multiple performers, which hadn’t yet been announced at press time. Last year’s performance featured The Oak Ridge Boys, Callista Clark, Danielle Bradbery, Riley Green and Justin Moore.

There’s a new spot to watch the action this year. Visitors can watch the race while cruising down the Cumberland aboard the General Jackson Riverboat. Those tickets include access to the race grounds, FanZone, and music options on Sunday race day.

This year they’ve expanded the competition to include a race on the water. Watercross, a jet ski competition, will take place on the Cumberland on Friday and Saturday of race week.

As a luxury pool builder for over 40 years, Rondo Pools in Franklin has seen many changes take place in the industry. What hasn’t changed is the fact that backyard pools are a wonderful place where family and friends can gather together and have fun. “It's a great way to make memories and it's a great way to have your family together,” says Dana Rondeau, co-owner of the company, along with her husband, Steve. “And today, due to changes in the real estate market, most buyers of high-end homes have come to expect a pool as one of the many included amenities.” While the traditional and classic straight-line rectangle is now the most requested shape, extras such as water and fire features, tanning ledges with loungers, and offset raised spas turn this basic shape into something extraordinary. “People love to sit in their backyards and listen to water features such as custom-made copper or stainless-steel scuppers,” she says. “And, fire and water bowls are probably our most popular add-on items. These can be made of concrete or copper and have fire plus a trough where water comes out at the same time.”

For the tanning ledge loungers, Rondo uses a company called Ledge Lounger. “A young kid out of Texas invented these chairs and they have taken over the market,” says Dana. “Since the original chaise lounge design, they've come out with every different shape for every depth of water. We put those on our tanning ledges, or what some people call swim shelves or Baja shelves, which 99% of our pools have these days.” Slides are also still requested, but they’re not the typical large blue fiberglass slides of the past, which, while fun, were not aesthetically pleasing. “We generally incorporate them into a giant rock waterfall so they’re hidden,” she says. Pool/spa automation is another very important feature. “With this, you have the ability to control your pool, whether you're in California or at home, through your phone,” says Dana. “It's connected through a network and everything's automated, so you can turn on fire and water features, change your pool lights, adjust your heater, and more.” Another change over the years has been with the materials used to construct the pools. “Instead of gunite, we use a product called shotcrete,” she says. “It’s premixed and it's not as viscous so we can just shoot it from a big hose. This helps us avoid large equipment and trucks on the driveway.” They also use a product called PebbleSheen, which adds a refined textured finish that is more durable and longer lasting than some others. To go along with these amazing pools, another common request these days is for

modern outdoor structures where families and friends can congregate. Many have fireplaces and grill areas for a complete outdoor living experience. Rondo Pools can take care of every aspect of creating your very own backyard oasis from start to finish. “We have over 40 employees, including an in-house architect, designers and draftsman,” says Dana. “We use 3D software, so clients can get a very accurate visual of what their backyards are going to look like when everything is finished.” Along with this helpful technology, Rondo will soon be opening its newly expanded design studio. “It's beautiful,” she says. “We’ve created an entire display center with two giant pools of different sizes, five different colors of water, various fire features and different water features.” Dana and Steve have also begun meeting with, and have developed a great relationship with, other local pool builders they believe are the best of the best to learn from each other and provide even more amazing outcomes for their customers. The Team Annie Rose Foundation was founded in 2013 by the Robinson family after daughter Annie was diagnosed with, and beat, acute lymphocytic leukemia in 1997. T his past May, the foundation held its 9th annual Poker Run at Bavarian Bierhaus in Nashville. “We had a total of 60 cars, most of which included a passenger,” says Dr. Ross Robinson, Annie’s dad and president of the foundation. The Run raised over $50,000, and through the years, has brought in a total of $201,000. “It’s the main way we raise money to donate to the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society,” he says. This is the second year the generous Aldeans, their charitable organization Second Chance Smiles, and Dr. Matt Kasiar have joined forces to give the ultimate smile and glam makeover worth more than $60,000 to one lucky person. That lucky person? Neal Price. Neal lives in Conroe, Texas, with his wife and son where he works doing civil construction. His wife, Morgan, follows Brittany Aldean on Instagram and was the one who discovered the giveaway. It took a lot of encouragement for Neal to make the video. He explains, “I would avoid having conversations with people, so that way they couldn’t see my teeth. Or if I had to talk with someone, I would try to look away or keep my lips to where my teeth weren’t showing.” Neal’s grateful Morgan finally convinced him to submit a video just before the deadline. Dr. Kasiar and Brittany were excited to see more men enter the contest this year. After watching so many heart-wrenching videos, it was ultimately Neal’s vulnerability and kindness that stood out to them. Brittany says, “In my experience, I know it’s extremely hard for a man to submit something like that. It’s difficult for someone to be real and raw, knowing people would be watching that video. It wasn’t planned to pick a man this year, but it was based off of a gut feeling and seeing how passionately he wanted a new smile and how much he knew it was going to affect his life.” Brittany and Jason called Neal with the news as he and his family were at a restaurant getting seated for dinner. His family was full of anticipation as they had been praying for

this every day. Neal admits, “I don’t even remember what I said. I was so shocked and nervous.” He was about to get the smile of his dreams. Dr. Matt Kasiar is the cosmetic dentist at The Practice in Franklin who designed Neal’s teeth. He says, “In Neal’s case, a lot of the teeth were in bad shape and had to go, so by the time we were looking at the remaining teeth, there wasn’t a lot to work with. We opted to remove the rest of them and place seven implants on his top and seven implants on the bottom.” Neal was in surgery for eight hours, but everything went perfectly. Neal made the final reveal to his friends and family in May and was almost unrecognizable! To complete the makeover, he had his hair done by Travis Mitchell from The Parker House salon and received a new wardrobe and styling by fashion expert Chérie Kilchrist. Everyone hopes this transformation opens up new opportunities and relationships for Neal. Many people don’t realize how life-changing new teeth can be. Before the makeover, Neal was socially awkward and would try his best to hide his teeth. Now Neal is coming out of his shell and shows off his bright white smile everywhere he goes. Neal says, “I always try to be the best person and father I can be, but if anything, it’ll help me get better. I can feel my confidence changing every day and I’m definitely very blessed.” After the success and gratification of the past two contests, Brittany is optimistic about continuing these smile makeovers for years to come.

BLAZE OF GLORY Youth Sports Programs That Are Popular And Fun

Brentwood Blaze is set to kick off its youth football and cheer programs this July. Running through the last week of October, it’s a big draw for boys and girls aged 5 to 12, and its rosters tends to fill up fast. In addition to teaching skills, fostering discipline and team spirit, and providing fun, the nonprofit organization focuses first on safety. “The biggest thing that Blaze does is everything is age, size and skill appropriate,” says Don Borgeson, head coach and board member. “For football, we actually have an NFL-college rated helmet that’s designed to prevent concussions, and this year, we've replaced everything, including shoulder pads, with the latest state-of-the-art equipment to prevent injuries.” He also explains all of the group's coaches complete comprehensive training through the National Alliance for Youth Sports, and are certified and trained in fundamental aspects of football safety, injury prevention and injury recognition. No More Tears JULY IS DRY EYE AWARENESS MONTH

July is Dry Eye Awareness Month. In honor of that, let’s talk a bit about dry eye. Dry eye disease is prevalent all over the world and is reported to affect from 5% to 73% of the US population and affects women slightly more than men. You might already be wondering why such a wide disparity in dry eye reporting. It is because dry eye has never been well defined, well understood or effectively treated. It has always been considered to be chronic and unfixable. Does dry eye include redness, itching, burning or generalized inflammation? Does it occur in teenagers or the elderly? Is it just dryness or can it be watery eyes? The answer to the aforementioned questions is all. And this explains the side range of incidence… it depends on how you define it. Dry eye disease is an advanced stage of eyelid inflammation which exists in all of us to some degree. But the problem is that this biofilm-induced inflammation which usually starts in childhood, causes no acute symptoms until had effectively destroyed the glands that produce our tears. Loss of our tear-producing glands progresses slowly and imperceptibly

until it is nearly too late to do anything about it. It is critically important that society realize that loss of our tear glands is very similar to losing our teeth without good oral hygiene. Plaque is essentially a biofilm of the mouth that needs to be cleaned off of the teeth regularly to prevent gingivitis and tooth loss. A biofilm also develops on the eyelid and will cause chronic eyelid inflammation (blepharitis) that destroys the tear glands. Good eyelid hygiene and lid margin cleaning by an eye doctor should begin in the teenage years and continue throughout life. Doing so should help prevent loss of the tear glands before it begins. Once someone has dry eye they have already lost a significant portion of their tear glands. Treatment then requires regular and effective biofilm removal from all aspects of the eyelid. Currently there are only two centers in the country that are fixing this disease. One is in Brentwood and one in Atlanta… members of the Centers for Dry Eye. This is the month to increase awareness that dry eye starts without symptoms; it can be prevented and yes, it can finally be cured.
