PR IVATE G ATED 4 + AC RE ESTATE N E ST LE D I N T H E R O L L I N G H I LLS O F F RAN K L I N . Under Contract by the Paula Hinegardner within 48 hours of listing. We would be honored to present your listing to market in 2022! From the moment we met Paula, we knew we were in good hands! Coming f rom CA it was very overwhelming to learn the area, let alone where we were going to f ind our new home. We felt so reassured with her knowledge of the area and her connections allowed us to see homes the moment they were available! We found our dream house the very f irst time out and then she helped us throughout the entire negotiation process. Even after the papers were signed and done, Paula and her team have been there to help us with our relocation!
Where do we even begin?! From the moment we f irst spoke with Paula, we knew there would not be anyone who would better understand our desire to relocate to provide a better upbringing for our new baby. Selling our home and relocating cross county with an infant, into one of the hottest real estate markets in the US, was going to be no small feat. However, Paula and her team took on the challenge and within just over a month, and with a LOT of obstacles, she scored us our dream home and has helped with the smallest and largest of details all along the way, to ensure a smooth transition. We truly feel like we have found “family” in Paula and know that achieving our goal to relocate to TN, would not have been possible without all of her hard work. Words cannot express how fortunate we are to have connected with such a PRO – THANK YOU, Paula. We owe you a lifetime of gratitude!

It’s a new year, and that signifies new beginnings and a fresh start. With how busy life becomes, it is a nice reprieve to be still for a moment and reflect on where we have been, what the past year has taught us, what we want to grow and learn from, and where we want to go from there. The practice of establishing new goals or a resolution for the coming year is something that can help us focus on what is truly a priority or at least what should be. Some of the most popular New Year’s resolutions center around getting healthier and spending more time with the people we cherish. Other goals may be more community focused revolve around being intentional about finding ways to help people in need in our city. Whatever your goals may be this year, know that the simple act of making a goal is a great first step. We then just have to move from simply thinking about doing those things and make a daily decision to act on them. Our January issue is dedicated to health and wellness in the New Year: eating right, physical fitness and purposeful connections. The importance of being healthy in body, mind and spirit is the focus of this issue. Our hope for you in this New Year is one of wellness, health and love but don't forget to have fun too. Here's to a healthy and happy 2022!

Brentwood At Its Best
SHINING A LIGHT ON LOCAL EXPERTS WHO CAN HELP OTHERS THRIVE
Whether you’re in need of dental care, chiropractic treatments, and/or other health and wellness services, Brentwood has plenty of amazing local providers. Of course, we can’t cover them all here, but we do have a great sampling of professionals who will make you feel as if you’re living your best life!
Dr. Ashley Guthrie, of Guthrie Facial Plastic Surgery, loves using her skills to impact patients’ lives in powerful, positive ways. “Being a surgeon allows me to make immediate, significant changes and improvements to a person’s appearance, and there is no greater satisfaction than seeing the joy that can bring,” she says. “Not only do I get to make people feel better about themselves for cosmetic reasons, but I also get to help reconstruct and repair patients who have experienced trauma, scarring, or cancers of the face.” The practice offers a full range of surgical options such as facelifts, rhinoplasty, blepharoplasty, otoplasty, lip lifts, and hair transplantation, as well as nonsurgical options for facial rejuvenation like Botox, Dysport, and an array of fillers. It also offers the most up-to-date equipment and cosmetic systems, which she says, produces substantial skin tightening and smoothing. Her extensive training ensures her patients are in safe hands. “I believe it’s extremely important to find a surgeon who has experience treating the intricacies of the face,” she says. “The anatomy is unique and sometimes challenging, which can be overwhelming for a surgeon who doesn’t focus solely on that. I feel confident that I can deliver great results for my patients.” Guthrie Facial Plastic Surgery offers an individualized, detail-oriented approach to each patient. “Every person who walks into our office is special to us, and he/she is treated as our number one priority,” she says. Connie Williams Stretching Specialist/ Fitness Expert
Connie Williams has been working in the fitness industry in various capacities for 42 years. In addition to teaching aerobics, she has owned a personal training business. But, she feels her greatest contribution to the fitness industry was co-creating the step-aerobics program in the late ‘80s and travelling the world training instructors on how to teach it. For the past 24 years, Connie has been teaching group exercise classes at the Brentwood YMCA and, four years ago, opened her own stretching business. “I love being a stretch coach,” she says. Stretch Therapy with Connie offers 60-minute oneon-one sessions and small-group classes, as well as many online stretch workshops.
People can sign up on her website. She realized the importance of stretching after suffering a hip injury five years ago. “I set out on a quest to research and learn everything I could about the amazing life changing benefits of stretching,” says Connie. During her journey, she worked with university professors, attended workshops and obtained certifications in her quest to gain enough knowledge so that she would be able to help others hopefully before they suffer an injury. “What I learned was that stretching is the missing link in most fitness routines,” she says. “My clients’ testimonials are incredible and inspiring” says Connie. “Stretching has truly changed their lives! My passion for stretching and my experience and knowledge is what, I believe, makes what I do stand out.” StretchTherapyWithConnie.com CONTINUED > JANUARY 2 0 2 2 | C I TYL I FE STYL E . “Our team puts an emphasis on continuing education so that we can offer the most up-to-date skin care procedures.”
Tara Schaffer Aesthetician
Tara Schaffer, the owner of Schaffer Skin, has been a licensed aesthetician for more than 20 years. She and her experienced staff now offer high-quality customized skin treatments for every skin type. “I started in a medical office that was developing a skin spa,” she says. “So, I was able to learn both skincare and how to build a business. In 2002, I was given the opportunity to work for a private dermatology practice in the Cool Springs area. I was mentored on how to care and treat each patient.” After 10 years of growth, she continued her career working for a large medical group overseeing their skincare department until opening her own practice in 2020.

“Our services include laser treatments, IPL [intense pulsed light therapy], microneedling, HydraFacials, chemical peels, injectables and dermatology,” says Tara. The long-term goal at Schaffer Skin, she explains, is to be clear in their vision and to stay connected as a team in order to be successful in their craft. “We’re able to provide services from our licensed aestheticians to our dermatology nurse practitioner. Developing personal relationships and educating patients is our priority. Our team puts an emphasis on continuing education so that we can offer the most up-to-date skin care procedures.” Tara and her team value their patients’ time and are proud that they are able to provide efficient and effective skincare services all in one place. Dr. James Rynerson Ophthalmologist
The Dry Eye Center of Brentwood focuses on not just treating dry eye disease, but more importantly, fixing it. “I use new and unique knowledge gained from my research in dry eye to treat dry eye disease like no one ever has before,” says Dr. James Rynerson, the founder of the practice. He does this, he explains, by focusing his efforts on the meibomian glands, which produce the oil layer of our tear film. “We’re able to put a stop to years of damage that goes unnoticed until it is too late in most patients,” he says. “By focusing on the underlying cause of dry eye, a bacterial biofilm, we can eliminate symptoms along with the inflammation that causes such damage to our tear glands, and makes the eyes red, irritated, dry or conversely, sometimes watery.” Dr. Rynerson followed his father, a family practice doctor, into medicine. Due to his excellent manual dexterity and hand/ eye coordination, his father suggested that he would be very good at ophthalmology, which required microsurgical skills, and was a specialty which had a nice balance, combining surgery with medicine. “It is very rewarding to be able to educate long-frustrated patients and finally put an end to their misery,” he says. Dr. Rynerson is also the president and founder of BlephEx, LLC, a painless in-office procedure that very precisely and carefully removes debris and exfoliates eyelids. CentersForDryEye.com

Dr. Elizabeth Baker & Dr. Caleb Powell Chiropractors
Dr. Elizabeth Baker knew she wanted to go into the medical field, and after going to a chiropractor herself for many years, decided to follow that path. Ten years ago, she took over ownership of Maryland Farms Chiropractic. “We focus on corrective chiropractic care,” she says. “What that means is we look to figure out the underlying problem for someone’s pain and we develop a treatment plan based on the patient exam, their history, their age, and the length of the issue.” Digital X-rays, says Dr. Baker, are used to help determine the best ways to alleviate patients’ pain as quickly as possible, while focusing on how to heal and correct the issue or injury so it doesn’t continue to deteriorate and degenerate in the future. “We adjust manually using traditional adjustment techniques, and we do soft tissue work if necessary” she says. “We also have some other in-house therapies for more full-service treatments including decompression therapy. And, we have a part-time massage therapist.” In August of 2021, Dr. Caleb Powell joined the practice. “The benefit of this is we both have very similar skill sets and styles, but we also have a few different tricks and areas of expertise so patients get two doctors to help in their healing,” she says. In addition, having two doctors on staff allows them to help more patients in a timely manner. MarylandFarmsChiro.com In August of 2021, Dr. Caleb Powell joined up with Dr. Elizabeth Baker at Maryland Farms Chiropractic in Brentwood. “I chose to join Maryland Farms because they share the same chiropractic values as I do and the atmosphere created in the office is unbeatable,” he says. He went into the chiropractic field after suffering a sports injury. “I competed in weightlifting in college where I injured my shoulder and lower back,” says Dr. Powell. “I was referred to a chiropractor for treatment and from that I found my interest in chiropractic. Chiropractic allowed me to

get back to the quality of life I had before my injuries. Now I want to do the same for others.” For new patients who may be a little nervous, he first finds out what they’re anxious about and then does his best to alleviate their concerns. Their unease sometimes stems from the many misconceptions about chiropractic care. “Chiropractic is not about cracking backs,” says Dr. Powell. “We adjust the spine to allow the body to work at its full potential.” He stresses that adjustments don’t hurt - instead they help relieve symptoms. But, one adjustment does not fix the problem. “It’s just like going to the gym to get a six pack; you have to be consistent with it,” he says. MarylandFarmsChiro.com
“I’m constantly learning and pushing myself to be a better injector and practitioner.”
Kim Engelhardt Nurse Practitioner
The Aesthetic Loft, which opened in 2020, offers a full range of medical aesthetic procedures. “Our most popular treatments include Botox/Dysport injections to treat wrinkles,” says owner Kim Engelhardt. It also offers hair restoration, dermal fillers, microneedling, and platelet-rich plasma therapies for the skin. Medical-grade skin care is another popular offering and includes Diamond Glow, a medical-grade facial. “I’m constantly learning and pushing myself to be a better injector and practitioner,” she says. “I attend conferences as well as subscribe to several continuous learning platforms. Most importantly, I can relate to most of my patients because I fall into their same demographic and am dealing with a lot of the same skin issues they are. I listen to their concerns, come up with
realistic treatment goals and work with my patients to achieve these goals.” Kim has been a registered nurse for 23 years and a nurse practitioner for 19 years, so she is very familiar and comfortable with medical procedures. “I have worked in many different areas of medicine from ICU to outpatient settings,” she says. “I got my start in medical aesthetics while working for a plastic surgery practice where I assisted with surgical procedures, as well as non-surgical, aesthetic treatments.” Her number one concern, she stresses, is her patients’ safety and satisfaction, even if that means less profit for her in the end. “I always say, ‘I’m a really good nurse practitioner, but possibly not the best business woman,’” she says laughing. Church & Union Owners Hope Other Nashville Restaurants Join New Initiative
36
G IV IN G B AC K | FOOD + BE VE RAGE
Patrick Whalen, 5th Street Group CEO
One Nashville restaurant helps balance wage gaps between front-of-house and back-of-house employees through a new initiative called "Tip The Kitchen." Fresh to the Nashville restaurant scene as of September 2021, Church & Union Nashville managers are challenging the industry standard of only tipping servers by adding a second tip line to guest checks as part of their Tip the Kitchen initiative. Guests voluntarily can leave a gratuity for essential back-of-kitchen staff not typically seen during dining, such as kitchen managers, prep cooks, sous chefs, line cooks, pastry chefs, kitchen callers and dishwashers. The full amount of guest-donated money goes directly to the employees. In addition to tips left by guests for the back-of-house, Church & Union Nashville matches that amount up to $500 a night. Church & Union is one of multiple restaurants owned and operated by Charlotte-based, 5th Street Group. Patrick Whalen, 5th Street Group owner, says the goal of their new effort is to make a living wage a reality for all employees working in their dining establishments. He says he also wants his employees to be happy and feel valued. "Based on average work weeks before the pandemic, a restaurant employee may only make about $22,000 per year. That's living below the U.S. poverty line. When the volume of diners picked back up rafter the initial pandemic shutdowns, we realized there was a staffing crisis. Restaurant employees were being asked to come back to typical hourly wages that were unsustainable to begin with," recalls Patrick. "We didn't want to raise menu prices, and we operate overall on thin margins. Raising per-hour wages by a small amount seemed like a self-defeating approach, like we'd just be treating symptoms rather than solving the challenge."
Then a firsthand development hit Patrick's awareness hard: an employee asked about a possible loan to buy personal groceries. "I felt physically ill thinking that one of our employees may not have enough to eat. I couldn't live with that," he remembers. Patrick and his managers brainstormed how to get more money into the pool for their back-of-the-kitchen crews, with the objective to hopefully increase those employees' annual salaries by $15,000 to $20,000 per year. "We're sharing in this increase, and I'd like to help every employee get to middle class wages. It's been a game changer. Out of the company's 315-plus employees, about half of them work in the kitchen," he says. Since starting the initiative in April by explaining the program on menus, Patrick says they've noticed a more productive work environment and reduced turnover. Specifically, after being open for 15 days, the kitchen staff at Church & Union Nashville had received $16,000-plus in tips for the kitchen staffers, he says. More than $817,245 companywide has gone to the kitchen staff since they launched the initiative earlier this year, Patrick adds. "We project the tally will be at a million dollars by mid-January." 5th Street Group employees who qualify for Tip The Kitchen are those making less than $70,000 per year. In the spirit of 'partnering' with diners, Patrick is publicly transparent about the status of the initiative by posting the data and financial contributions on the company's social media. He also posts the company's sales information. At press time, 20.7 percent of guests were participating in the optional kitchen effort, with an average of an additional $63 per shift awarded to each kitchen staffer. "We hope this action brings insight and compassion into the mix, and that more Nashville restaurants will join

this unique initiative to change the way tipping can support every employee supporting restaurants. Having said that, we also believe a kitchen gratuity should only be awarded for experiences that are worthy, so we work together as a team to create great meal services," he says. Patrick shares that his main, underlying reason for launching Tip The Kitchen is because he would like the restaurant business to be a viable career for all who especially desire and enjoy working in the hospitality sector.

HEALING WITH HEARTFELT RESOLVE LOCAL MIND AND BODY WELLNESS CENTER WANTS PATIENTS TO THRIVE

While it's 100% wonderful to heal physically, the medical team at Thrive Wellness in Brentwood also want to help their patients heal mentally. Dr. Glen Blaschke, founder and chief medical officer of Thrive Wellness, says he anchors all customized treatments with evidence-based medicine. He also applies his 23 years of emergency medicine experience during consultations with Thrive clients. "We have a strong corporate and clinical team at Thrive that has patient care at the forefront of all decisions," he adds. Early in his college education, Dr. Blaschke discovered he loved chemistry. He then became a research assistant to a professor

who studied heart attacks. Eventually, he received a grant from the Alzheimer's Foundation to study how humans create and store memories. Along the way, he met and collaborated with doctors who worked with stroke patients. It was all his various medical experiences combined that made him a well-rounded emergency room physician. "Oftentimes, a person's sympathetic nerve system, which connects the internal organs to the brain by spinal nerves, gets crossed with the pain nervous system. That can lead to a severe and chronic pain syndrome in a certain area," he explains. The center opened just before the COVID-19 pandemic hit and the staff typically use innovative combinations of medicines, NAD (nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide) and IV vitamin treatments to assist patients. NAD is a coenzyme found in all living cells and has even been called an anti-aging molecule because of the many important roles it plays in promoting health and prolonging lifespan. Thrive Wellness patients come to the clinic to treat a range of conditions, including depression, anxiety, post-traumatic stress disorder, migraines, obsessive-compulsive disorder, cancer pain, fatigue, vitamin optimization, brain health, weight management, hormonal rebalancing and immunity recovery. Dr. Blaschke says he's treated thousands of patients throughout his career with ketamine, which is a drug for treatment-resistant depression. The FDA approved ketamine as an anesthetic for people in 1970. Doctors then developed a protocol for medically supervised use that has helped people who don’t get relief from other medications related to debilitating depression and suicidal tendencies. Ketamine allows the brain and peripheral nerves to reorganize and return to their original functions, he states. "Ketamine treatment allows us to eliminate the symptoms of many conditions that lead to being labeled addicted, which in turn allows people to change their views toward addiction. It essentially allows a person to disassociate and move bad things [experiences, memories] out of the brain. The brain heals through this process," says Dr. Blaschke. "The brain draws a box around this CONTINUED >

thing, creates boundaries, and you can choose through therapy how you're going to react to it. It takes away its ability to invade your life." He says everyone employed at the clinic has had ketamine therapy. "So we know what it does, how it feels and how it affects people so we can describe it to clients. We're 90% successful through patient treatments." Since the pandemic, he says they've been focused more on mental health, especially with the success of patient care treatments that consolidate physicians, nurse practitioners, physicians assistants and psychotherapists as a team. "During the pandemic, we also treated the military for free, particularly ones that had had traumatic events overseas. We helped them through their PTSD," he adds. "Your heart just goes, wow, we're doing something with such purpose." He says they also apply a monitoring and surveying system with clients, texting them every day. Additionally, they recently added aesthetics services for skin rejuvenation and natural beauty, as potential post-therapy steps for clients. "This to help people feel good on the outside, too," says the doctor. They also offer lifestyle optimization, such as genetic and lab testing or testosterone therapy. In other cases, for example, the Thrive Wellnes team say they've been able to increase mobility for people dealing with Parkinson's disease, to assist people with cravings for opioids or to alleviate symptoms of attention-deficit/ hyperactivity disorder. Dr. Blaschke graduated from Texas State University and completed his doctorate and surgery internship at Baylor College of Medicine. He finished his training in emergency medicine, serving as chief resident at Texas Tech Health Sciences Center. He's a diplomat of the American Board of Emergency Medicine and has his American Board of Emergency Certification in Emergency Medicine. 5400 Maryland Way, Suite 100, Brentwood Office Hours: Mondays through Fridays 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. 615.880.9566 ThriveWellnessGroups.com

MaxWell Clinic’s Dr. David Haase Explains Regenerative Plasma Exchange For Dr. David Haase his career in medicine is a natural fit. “I just love seeing people thrive…” says Dr. Hasse, Founder and CEO of MaxWell Clinic. “Wherever somebody needs help, I like to pitch in and be that help…” This outlook has led to opening his practice in 2003 to help improve the health of people in middle Tennessee. With knowledge gained from his medical training from Vanderbilt University and his residency at Mayo Clinic, he founded the MaxWell Clinic—which has two locations in Brentwood and Clarksville, Tennessee—to drive forward the innovation of advancements in fields such as nutrition, genomics, systems biology, apheresis, and brain assessment. Over the past decade, Dr. Haase has focused on Regenerative Plasma Exchange as a way to treat and slow down the process of cognitive decline in patients. “We are pioneering the field of personalized regenerative systems medicine,” shares Dr. Haase. While the science behind Regenerative Plasma Exchange is complex, Dr. Haase illustrates it in a way that almost everyone can understand, equating the treatment to changing the oil in your car. “Do you change the oil in your car? Why do you do that? Because dirty oil wears down the engine,” explains Dr. Haase. “Turns out that our plasma is the oil that pumps through our body and that can have an accumulation of damage that can build up in the plasma, just like when the accumulation of damaged molecules and rust and little oil particles happen in the oil your car. That turns out it builds up in our plasma. When we’re young, we don’t make a lot of those damaged molecules and rusted molecules…As we age, we tend to make more degenerative products or more degenerative substances… What plasma exchange does, is essentially the oil change.” Dr. Haase further describes that Regenerative Plasma Exchange works in such a way that it makes old stem cells start to behave as young stem cells and can “resuscitate body-wide stem cell activity.” “It’s like having a highly technical IV. It’s an IV with two different IVs running simultaneously,” he explains of the treatment. “One where the blood’s coming out of your body and one where the blood’s coming back in your body. In between, we help clean the blood.” While each Regenerative Plasma Exchange session does take some time to complete, Dr. Haase and his team have created a comfortable environment in which to experience the process. “The treatment can take anywhere from about 1.5 to 2.5 hours. You’re sitting in a comfortable chair surrounded by the most amazing nurses on the planet, tending to your every need and usually enjoying some great conversation,” he says of his staff.

Regenerative Plasma Exchange is designed to work in conjunction with medical treatment that patients are already receiving for their health issues. When it comes to who can benefit from this treatment, there are several different groups that have proven to find it impactful. This treatment is primarily used to help individuals with severe autoimmune diseases including Scleroderma, Multiple Sclerosis, Neuromyelitis Optica, and Guillain-Barre syndrome. Additionally, it is used to treat those with cognitive decline and has demonstrated successful results. “…This is supported by the AMBAR trial and that showed that individuals with moderate Alzheimer's disease had a 60% slowing in their rate of decline over 14 months,” says Dr. Haase of those undergoing the treatment. “In individuals with mild Alzheimer's disease, there was a strong trend towards improvement over those same 14 months. That was with the protocol we think now we have improved upon. So, it’s just really incredible…” According to Dr. Haase, the treatment also has successful results for people he calls “body hackers”, referring to those who want to improve their own human performance and enhance overall body healing. Through “before and after” testing, his team has proven that in some cases people who have undergone Regenerative Plasma Exchange have had their “…markers of

biologic age get younger after a treatment, sometimes four to six years younger after one plasma exchange.” Since all patients may react differently to treatment, they should discuss certain potential side effects including [insert side effects here] with [LV1] their physicians and treatment administrator. Dr. Haase and his team understand that no two people are exactly the same, which is why they focus on tailoring each treatment plan based on the unique patient “…Every treatment should be personalized to the needs of that individual…” explains Dr. Haase. “We start with utilizing the data from the largest published trials, which would typically for somebody with cognitive decline would start with doing one plasma exchange a week for six weeks and then we reassess…Some people are improving at a level where we want to continue doing it more frequently and others are plateauing or don’t have as much need for improvement and then we switch to every two weeks, [then] every month, in that order…” For Dr. Haase, he sees Regenerative Plasma Therapy as the future of longevity medicine and his goal is to help bring people more good days. “It’s a great life to help people get better,” he says. 615.370.0091 MaxWellClinic.com/RPE

Estate Planning Is Crucial

Some people's New Year's resolutions include plans to get their lives better organized. The COVID-19 pandemic reminded everyone that estate planning is vital. "Every family is unique. We guide clients through each facet of the estate planning and asset protection process," says Larry Bray, attorney at Patterson Bray PLLC. Brentwood Lifestyle asked Larry about important estate planning components. A POWER OF ATTORNEY LEGAL DOCUMENT DESIGNATES AN AGENT TO HANDLE YOUR FINANCIAL AFFAIRS IF YOU'RE UNABLE TO DO SO BECAUSE OF INCAPACITY. WHAT HAPPENS IF YOU DON'T HAVE A POA? In most cases, family members will hire an attorney to file a petition in Probate Court to name a conservator for the incapacitated person. The Judge will appoint another attorney, referred to as the guardian ad litem, to represent the best interests of the incapacitated person, or ward. The guardian ad litem will interview the ward, the ward’s family, the ward’s doctors and others and will make a recommendation to the judge as to whether the ward is in need of a conservator and whom the conservator should be. The conservatorship process is often lengthy and expensive. WHAT MAKES A LEGAL LAST WILL AND TESTAMENTS? A holographic, or handwritten, Last Will and Testatment is legal if it is entirely written in the handwriting of the testator. However, most Last Will and Testaments are typed and signed by the testator in the presence of two independent witnesses. Additionally, the witnesses should sign a self-proving affidavit to avoid the necessity of the witnesses testifying as to the testator’s competency in Probate Court after the testator’s death. Because of these technical requirements for a legal Last Will and Testament, having the document drafted by an attorney is strongly recommended.
WHAT ADVANTAGE DO REVOCABLE LIVING TRUSTS OFFER? A fully funded revocable living trust will avoid the need for a Probate Court administration at death. All Last Will and Testaments must be admitted to Probate Court after the death of the testator to transfer assets to the named beneficiaries. If the assets are owned by a revocable living trust, the trust document directs the distribution of assets to beneficiaries without the need for a Probate Court administration. A fully funded revocable living trust will keep the grantor’s financial affairs private and out of the court system at an incapacity of death. UPON DEATH OF A SPOUSE, WHAT EFFECT DO TENNESSEE COMMUNITY PROPERTY TRUSTS HAVE? In many states, Community Property ownership is the default way assets are owned by married couples. Although Tennessee is not a Community Property state, Tennessee permits married couples to “opt in” to Community Property ownership by establishing a Tennessee Community Property Trust. A benefit of Community Property is that the entire asset is entitled to an increase in basis to the asset’s fair market value at the death of the first spouse to die. A complete step up in basis at the first death will allow the surviving spouse to sell the asset without incurring capital gains taxes. CAN ESTATE TAXES BE SKIPPED WITHIN ASSET AND DIVORCE PROTECTION TRUSTS FOR CHILDREN/ DYNASTY PLANNING? Although most parents will leave inherited assets outright to adult, responsible children so that they take title in their names. If children own the inherited assets, the assets will be subject to the claims of creditors and possibly divided in a subsequent divorce proceeding. However, the inherited assets can be directed to irrevocable trusts for the benefit CONTINUED >

of children and their families so that the assets will be protected from the children’s creditors or divorce proceedings. Each child may act as the sole trustee for his or her trust for the administration and distribution of the trust assets. Additionally, the assets remaining in the irrevocable trust will pass free of estate taxes to the next generation. Many clients will direct all future descendants’ inheritances into irrevocable trusts to protect the inheritance from creditors, divorce proceedings and estate taxes for generations. WHY ESTABLISH GIFT TRUSTS? Each individual can gift $15,000 annually to a done without any gift tax consequences. This amount is referred to as the annual gift tax exclusion. Rather than making annual exclusion gifts outright to children or grandchildren, donors may consider making annual exclusion gifts to irrevocable gift trusts to maintain control over the management of the gifts as well as to protect the gifts (and appreciation) from the child’s or grandchild’s creditors or future divorce proceedings. Although some donors will establish custodial accounts for children and grandchildren, a custodial account, or Uniform Transfer to Minors Act (UTMA) account, an UTMA account must be distributed outright to the beneficiary when the beneficiary reaches the age of 21. IS IT TRUE SPOUSAL GIFT TRUSTS CAN BE SET UP? The current Federal Estate and Gift Tax Exemption amount (the Exemption) is $11,700,000 and will be increased to $12,060,000 beginning in 2022. There has been much discussion by the current Presidential administration and Congress to reduce the Exemption substantially. Even if no reduction occurs with changes to the law, the current law expires on

Dec. 31, 2025, effectively decreasing the Exemption by one-half. Therefore, many clients are in a “use it or lose it” situation regarding the Exemption. For married couples, one spouse can make an Exemption gift to a trust for the benefit of the other spouse, which I refer to as a Spousal Gift Trust. Some professionals refer to these trusts as Spousal Limited Access Trusts, or SLATs. The Spousal Gift Trust is designed so that any transfers to the trust will be gifts using the Exemption of the donor. However, the Spousal Gift Trust allows the trustee to make distributions to the other spouse. Additionally, assets remaining in the Spousal Gift Trust at the surviving spouse’s death will pass estate tax-free to or for the benefit of children, grandchildren or other beneficiaries. IS IT GOOD TO ESTABLISH RETIREMENT BENEFITS TRUSTS TO COMBINE TAX BENEFITS? The primary benefit of a Retirement Benefits Trust is to protect the required minimum distributions (RMDs) from retirement plans to beneficiaries’ after the death of the owner of the account. If RMDs are made outright to a beneficiary, the distribution will be subject to the creditors and divorce proceedings of the beneficiary. A properly drafted Retirement Benefits Trust will permit the RMDs to be distributed over the maximum term as directed in the Secure Act, which was passed in 2021 and decreased the term over which RMDs must be taken. The Retirement Benefits Trust will protect the RMDs from the creditors or divorce proceedings of the beneficiary while providing control over when the RMDs are distributed. 205 Powell Place, Brentwood 615.312.8220 (24/7 Call Answering) PattersonBray.com

In a world of flashy swipe-ups, contrived collaborations, filtered moments in time and oversaturated influence, Caroline Hobby, wife, mother, former country music darling and podcast contender, wants you to get real. Reclined in a plush, camel-colored chair in her stylish, ranch-style Brentwood home, an iced matcha latte in hand, and casually dressed in black yoga pants and a T-shirt, she looks impossibly radiant. Her aura does more than smile; it beams. “Some people walk into a room and want to be a big powerplayer, but I walk into a room and feel everyone’s feelings. I feel like my gift is to sit with those who feel misunderstood, undervalued or unheard. I like to help people make their story a beautiful work of art,” she says. She speaks with a gaze so tenderly penetrating and voluminously compassionate, you get the sense that she means it. There’s something about her that makes you feel as though it’s safe to drop whatever heavy emotions you might be lugging around, and come back home to who you are. Her husband, Michael Hobby, lead singer of the Southern Rock band, A Thousand Horses, is kicked back in a chair a few feet away from her, taking slow sips of his coffee, encompassed by rows of song plaques. He’s a real rock-n-roll spirit, though there’s a humility and a sensitivity about him that’s equally as inviting. While Caroline’s presence chirps and roars like a summer anthem, Michael’s lands with more of a bluesy whisper. Yet, there’s something infectiously harmonic about their synergy as a couple. It’s impossible not to like them. Now both well into their 30s, and doting parents to their 2 year-old daughter, Sunny, their first
encounter stretches all the way back to their early 20s. They were both musicians at the time, saturated in the Nashville scene, playing gigs and wandering out of bars at all hours of the night. They fell madly in love and dated for four years, but it didn’t work out because they each had a roster of self-discoveries to strum through. At the time, Caroline, a Texas native and Belmont University graduate, was busy recording and touring with her trio, Stealing Angels, alongside Jennifer Wayne, granddaughter of John Wayne, and Tayla Lynn, granddaughter of Loretta Lynn–opening up for the likes of Faith Hill, Tim McGraw and Lady A. Michael was riding the early success of A Thousand Horses, a band whose roots were dug somewhere in his hometown of Newberry, South Carolina. Two years after parting ways, and after a series of unexpected detours, when they came back together, sparks flew–each carrying a flame for the other that had never burned out. Four months after reconnecting, they eloped on a small island in the Bahamas while on a trip with Caroline’s family. “The funny thing is, my plan was to ask Caroline’s dad for permission to marry her while there, but she had no idea. When I was talking to her brother about it, Caroline ran toward me and shouted, ‘Hey! What do you say we get married down here?’ It was so Caroline,’” Michael says, grinning fondly. Days later, the couple stood on the pale pink sand, exchanging vows of forever, a few feet from the sparkling, turquoise-hued waters of the Caribbean, surrounded by their closest loved ones. “Everything fell into place in a divine way. It’s important to mention that because the way we got married is also how we live our lives and raise our daughter. Michael and I are big believers in taking risks, trusting your gut and not being afraid to take leaps of faith,” Caroline says. Though it might appear that theirs is a perfectly charmed life, they’ve trampled through a lot of hard stops and restarts–separately and together. Michael, whose band was first signed to Interscope by Jimmy Iovine when he was 20 years old, had traveled through a few lifetimes by the time he'd left his musical thumbprint on Nashville. Spending much of his childhood in and out of hospitals, he watched his older brother, Grayson, suffer with cancer for seven years before his body succumbed to illness. Growing up, Michael was serenaded to sleep by the beeping of his brother’s heart monitors. Music, though already in his bloodline, considering his cousins are Chris and Rich Robinson of The Black Crowes, became his haven of healing, joy and refuge. “From a young age, I learned that life isn’t always fair. But, even with the bad things that happen, you can make beautiful things,” Michael says. And he’d have to loop through this theme many times over. Although his band’s song, “Suicide Eyes” would be featured in the 2011 remake of Footloose, after six months with Interscope, A Thousand Horses was suddenly dropped, along with the rest of the label’s rock roster. Caroline has spun through a series of high and low notes as well. Once it became clear that the Stealing Angels singles weren’t charting well, the trio self-destructed. “It felt like my world had suddenly ended. But it quickly proved to be divine because that’s when I got the opportunity to be on The Amazing Race. That was the beginning of me learning to trust my intuition, and to know that nothing ends without a new opportunity coming your way,” she says. Between seasons 22 and 24, Caroline traveled to 20 countries. She was hurled into the belly of small town America and into tiny nooks of countries she’d never imagined visiting. She befriended locals. She worked in a sweatshop, making shirts and building a canoe to race across the Amazon. “Following my curiosity and listening to my soul is what led me to my true passion, which is podcasting. I had no way of dreaming the direction it would take, though. I just let my soul naturally lead me. There’s never a road map, but when you follow the open doors that feel good to you, you’re taken on the most amazing adventure,” she says. Caroline’s podcast, Get Real, launched in the spring of 2016, spotlighting Darius Rucker as her first guest. “I even got a tear out of Darius. I felt like Barbara Walters,” Caroline says, laughing. The podcast now boasts 1.6 million downloads annually, and she’s since featured celebrated figures from Lauren Alaina to Taylor Dayne, her childhood idol. And, in true Caroline fashion, she wraps up every episode with the heartfelt sentiment, “Leave your light.” Michael reflects on both Caroline’s and his career, emphasizing the necessity of being tuned to the melody of living vibrantly and knowing your “why.” Because, though you might find yourself at the top of the mountain one day, your wildest dreams unfolding like a heart-thumping ballad, you could suddenly wake up to find out that you’ve tumbled to the bottom of the valley.

He says that success is rarely what you imagine it’ll be, and transcends the fantasy of being rich and famous–of hearing your songs on the radio, of traveling the world in private planes and graduating from cozy venues to roaring arenas, and that none of it can satiate you if you aren’t driven by a sense of purpose. “I’ve been through multiple record deals and management teams. The thing is, you have to be truly in love with what you’re doing, because if you don’t, you’ll quit when it gets hard, and then you’ll miss out on the most incredible thing that could be around the corner,” he says. Just a few years after being dropped by Interscope, Michael’s band was signed to Big Machine Records. Their hit, “Smoke,” set a record for the highest debut by a new act, opening at number 28 on the Country Aircheck radio chart and later soaring to Number One. And, when Michael’s dad passed away two years ago, that loss further punctuated his allegiance to a spirit of openness and resiliency. His life-long hero, Michael’s dad was burned from head to toe at 3 years-old when a hot water heater burst near his crib. “Shortly before my dad died, he said to me, ‘Live life all the way. Go and do whatever you want while you can. No one is entitled to anything, so take responsibility for the life you want to live,’” Michael says. Caroline is moved to tears as she listens to her husband reflect upon that near-final message, adding that it embodies a life stance that the two of them fully embrace. The couple, who credit so much of their empowered outlook to Porter’s Call, an artist-geared counseling center located in Franklin, hope to inspire others by sharing their hearts. Michael says that, most essentially, when his name floats across someone’s desk, or anywhere in the world, his intention is that it be met with a warm feeling. Caroline nods in passionate agreement, adding, “Michael and I have the same goal, which is to create a colorful world around us, and to be led by our souls. For him, it’s through music. For me, it’s through sharing stories,” she says. The electricity between them is energizing and potent, with a takeaway that gleans clear: Seek refuge in the things you love. Turn the volume up on your intuition, and follow the nature of its song. Be a steward of your own healing, and encourage others to embrace theirs, too. And don’t forget to leave your light. CAROLINE HOBBY ARTICLE BY JENNIFER KAUFMAN

FASH ION F OR WA R D | BE AUTY
Caroline, Micheal and Sunny Hobby put together their very own DREAM TEAM for the Brentwood Lifestyle photo shoot. This group of people worked tirelessly to make this shoot special.
CIRBY RYAN STYLE Born and raised in Texas, music was what initially brought Cirby to Nashville nearly 8 years ago. She and her sisters chased a career in music together, gaining so many friendships and connections within the industry along the way. After their journey on stage came to an end, Cirby knew she wanted to find a way to stay involved in the creative spirit of all that makes up Music City. Through her experience, she knew that “Stage" and “Style" were two things that went hand-in-hand, and with fashion being a huge passion, Cirby knew this would be her way in. She has had the privilege of styling some pretty inspiring and talented people. To name a few, Cirby Ryan Style has been featured in People magazine by Whiskey Myer’s lead guitarist, John Jeffers. Walmart’s CEO, John Furner, was recently interviewed rocking CRS on the Today show, and Caroline & Michael Hobby of the "A Thousand Horses" band are frequent clients/friends of CRS. Cirby knew from the start that the ultimate goal is to be working red carpets and styling the stars, but she also knows that there’s a lot of work to be done for the everyday clientele. She wants to style that exhausted mom who’s ready to get her groove back, or the bride-to-be who is struggling to find the perfect timeless outfits for such memorable moments, etc. Cirby feels blessed to have had the support of so many already, and she is beyond excited to see where this road will lead Cirby Ryan Style.
PAIGE HIGGINS Born in Ohio, Paige always had an interest in makeup growing up. She originally went to college at Ohio University to become a science teacher, but discovered it wasn’t the right fit for her. Upon graduating OU in 2014, she went directly into cosmetology school at Aveda Fredric’s Institute in Cincinnati, Ohio. While in school, she worked part time in her local salon building up her resume in makeup. Anything from weddings, fashion shows, photoshoots, and charity events. Whatever she could do to work on her craft she did. While working in the salon, she also applied to MAC cosmetics. They had a part time position open in Columbus, Ohio. Paige took the job and worked
tirelessly commuting to between jobs which were an hour and a half apart from each other. "I'm not afraid of hard work, and making sacrifices. I embrace them. I know it’s molding me into the artist I want to be and the person I want to become,” says Paige. One of my favorite quotes, “hard works beats talent when talent doesn’t work hard” You can be born with a gift, but if you’re not working hard, taking risks, making sacrifices, failing, winning, learning, growing, evolving, then it’s a gift gone to waste. To me, the experiences of the ups and downs in pursuing your dreams makes life so beautiful and the job so rewarding” After two years working with MAC Cosmetics, she took a leap of faith, and moved her life to Nashville, TN in 2017. Retail didn’t allow her any free time for freelance work, so she left the cosmetic giant and an easy salary to pursue her goals, build her brand, and tap into the Nashville celebrity community. She’s currently working on the hit reality show Chrisley Knows Best. Other clients she has worked with are Jessie James Decker, Caroline Hobby, Jana Kramer, Temecula Road, Mallory Irvin, Lindsay Ell, Breland, Gabby Barrett, Hannah Ann Sluss from the Bachelor, and will soon have her first documentary film coming out on Paramount + this January called “Love, Tom.” You can follow her on Instagram: @makeupby_paigehiggins

“WHERE YOU’RE AT TO WHERE YOU WANT TO BE” ARTICLE BY SHELBY MCCLOUD
A MOBILE PERSONAL TRAINING COMPANY SPECIALIZING IN GROUP AND ONE ON ONE TRAINING.
Early bird gets the NFL jersey. Being an early riser isn’t something new for Zachary Olstad, and luckily, it doesn’t take much for him to bounce out of bed. That conditioning began at age six back on his family’s Armish farm in Harmony, Minnesota, population: 1,000, where his family still works and (sometimes plays.) Success for a guy from this farm town comes from making the most of what you have. Growing up with older siblings, Zachary began weight training in fourth grade and aspired early on to one day land a gig in the NFL. The weight training paid off, and the NFL came calling by way of the Buffalo Bills in 2018. While his dream of playing in the NFL was maybe short-lived, Zachary wasted no time figuring out next steps to catapult his passion for fitness and zest for hard work into a new career by serving others. After only two and half years in Nashville, 28 year-old Zachary officially launched 4X4 Mobile Fitness in July of this year, and it has proven to be a major success. Zachary is averaging about 30 sessions a week throughout the Nashville area with most sessions starting at 6 a.m. daily. In fact, he only takes Sunday’s off from his very packed scheduled. If a client wants to train, Zachary makes it happen. Like the name 4X4 Mobile suggests, this training concept travels by truck to you and caters to your individual fitness needs. The success of his company has mostly come from word of mouth, as most great things tend to do, and continues to grow. From high school ages to 70 years plus, there’s no age or fitness need that Zachary shies away from. Given his professional athlete background, he especially takes pride in modifying exercises to accommodate any possible injuries. “I begin every client with a phone consultation in order to better understand each client’s needs. Packages start at

a minimum of 6 sessions and are reasonably priced because I want my clients to understand it’s a process and that it’s all about persistence. I also want every client to have the same opportunity to succeed,” says Zachary. With celebrities and stars all around Nashville, it’s only natural to wonder who Zachary’s dream client might be. When asked, Zachary coyly smiles and says, “It doesn’t really matter about that stuff. I’m just happy to do what I get to do. I want to work with those who are persistent and continue to show up. That’s what really matters. Those are the clients I like to work with.” Not only has Zachary taken both his success and his setbacks and turned them into good, he took things one step further and became a self-published author in September of this year. In his book “Work Horse: From an Amish Farm to the NFL Gridiron,” it was important for Zachary to share his story and inspire others who might not have all the resources in the world to pursue their dreams. To stay motivated, Zachary is no stranger to blocking things out. (After all, he was a full back in the NFL.) “I don’t listen to the noise, and I don’t compare myself to what other people are doing. I stay in my lane and show up every day. I don’t feel like I’ve worked a day in my life.” So what’s next down the pipeline for this determined athlete? Zachary states, “I want to continue to grow 4X4 and serve Nashville and expand to other states. I want to travel the country and speak about my book and my story.” Zachary’s ultimate dream is to buy a farm back home in Minnesota near his family. With his humility, persistence and undeniable work ethic, there’s no doubt that Zachary will one day make that dream a reality. If his track record proves anything, his story will come full circle, andchances are that this early bird gets the farm, too.
“I STAY IN MY LANE AND SHOW UP EVERY DAY. I DON’T FEEL LIKE I’VE WORKED A DAY IN MY LIFE.” — Zachary Olstad

Dive Into The Wellness World’s Hottest (Actually, Coldest) Addition
The Cold Plunge
Are you ready to take the plunge? It’s a question you may not have asked yourself before but will now. So what is “The Cold Plunge?” In short, it’s a brisk, three-minute immersion into a cold tub that triggers the body into a state of regulation, greatly improving levels of energy, mental and physical strength and blood circulation. The profound effects of The Plunge can impact your overall health, from reducing chronic pain and inflammation to boosting metabolism and focus and creating better sleep and mental clarity. Co-founded by two entrepreneurs who bonded over their love for health and business, Ryan Duey and Mike Garrett found a friendship and created a vision to rejuvenate people. Two to three minutes a day of plunging into 39-55 degrees of cold water stimulates the mind, body and soul and sets your day into optimistic motion. The goal with the cold water is to lower your core body temperature, and it takes time to do that. “Water cools your body at 25 times what cold air does. Cold water is the quickest activation to do it.”
72
S ELF CA R E | WEL L N ESS
Cold plunging can be done daily or multiple times a day. It’s all about getting people to explore what works for them. They may offer up recommendations, but ultimately it’s you building a relationship with your cold plunge. Many like the morning plunge, others enjoy nighttime. For some, it cools the body down resulting in better sleep. The Cold Plunge offers four different models, all the same size, all cold at 39-55 degrees, and one that can turn into a hot tub at 103 degrees. The heat can be great for clients in really cold environments. There is also an app to control the temperature via bluetooth. You can find The Cold Plunge at thecoldplunge.com and @the.coldplunge on Instagram.

TO DRINK OR NOT TO DR I N K HAVE IT BOTH WAYS FOR DRY JANUARY WITH THIS COCKTAIL THAT SHINES WITH OR WITHOUT THE BOOZE
Hello, to the people of Dry January — here we present something special in which both drinkers and non-drinkers can partake. This mojito recipe is based around a flavorful nonalcoholic base that can ladder up if you choose, but is delicious with no booze added. INGREDIENTS • 3-4 fresh raspberries plus more for garnish • 5-6 mint leaves • 2 tablespoon simple syrup see directions below for how to make a simple syrup • Ice • 1/4 cup raspberry juice or can use cran-raspberry juice • 2 tablespoon fresh lime juice approx. 1/2 medium-large lime • 1/2 cup club soda or sparkling mineral water DIRECTIONS 1. To make a simple syrup, combine 1 cup granulated sugar with 1 cup water (or just equal parts, if making more or less) in a medium sauce pan. 2. Heat over medium heat, stirring frequently, until sugar is completely dissolved. Allow to cool. 3. In a tall glass, add raspberries, mint leaves and the simple syrup. 4. Muddle (squish with the back of a wooden spoon) well until the mint, simple syrup and raspberries are well-combined. If possible, try not to break apart the mint leaves, as this (in my opinion) will make for a less pleasant drinking experience. 5. Fill glass with ice. 6. Add raspberry juice, then the lime juice, and then fill with soda.

7. Garnish with lime wedge or additional raspberries, if desired.

Help for
Your Hair Q & A With An Expert In Hair Loss
Anyone can experience hair thinning. Left on our own, we often don’t know why hair loss starts. Twenty-year hair loss specialist Kimberly Vaughn answers your personal questions on alopecia, or hair loss. Kimberly is the managing director of HPIHair Partners in Nashville and a compassionate hair coach certified as a World Trichologist Society trained professional. She specializes in hair preservation, hair restoration and hair replacement. Question: I am a 27-year-old woman who is in great health (at least I think). Workouts are on my schedule three to four days a week, I am a vegan and work hard on getting enough protein in my diet, drink plenty of water and still my hair is falling out. What is going on? Answer: From your description above the first three thoughts that come to mind are: 1) Has something major happened in your

life within the past 9 months? Covid, break up, etc… 2) When was the last time you had a physical with a wholistic blood work up? This means, all hormones, thyroid tests, vitamins, and minerals. 3) Do you have a genetic predisposition? Parents, grandparents, aunts have thinning hair. Hair loss is a complicated topic with varying roads to travel in the quest for answers. The first step, and many times the hardest is determining the cause/s. As with any health concern, we need to understand the cause/effect scenario to determine treatment options. Start looking for your answers with factual evidence and get your blood work. Question: I am in my early 30s and I now wear hats every day. What are my options to have hair again and can it look natural? Answer: Hair loss is a challenging subject for men no matter how old you are. The photos you shared confidentially illustrate a significant hair loss on the top and crown of your head. Treatment for advanced hair loss such as you are experiencing has limitations. However, we now have many more options than ever before! If you are considering a hair replacement to fully cover the scalp, Nashville offers many options for hair replacement studios. Another option to consider is Scalp Micropigmentation (SMP) treatments. This is a tattoo-type procedure performed on the scalp to camouflage the bare skin, mimicking the look of a hair follicle. SMP is performed in sessions and can offer as much camouflage as needed. Either replacement or permanent camouflage are good options. Do your homework though! Ensure you have selected the best provider for your solution.

Question: My hair has been thinning for a few years and continues to worsen. My dermatologist has diagnosed my problem as androgenic alopecia. Does this mean I will start losing more hair or will the hair loss become patchy and fall out in clumps? After seeing several pictures online I am more worried now than even before the diagnosis. Answer: Take a few deep breathes, we will sort through the differences and you should feel better shortly. Androgenic alopecia and alopecia areata are very different diagnoses and conditions. The word “alopecia” simply means hair loss. As you would imagine the word androgenic refers to our heredity and can be referred to as male-pattern hair loss or female-pattern hair loss. Alopecia areata is an auto immune condition causing hair loss on the head, face, and other parts of the body and very different than its stepsister androgenic alopecia. Both hair loss conditions are extremely devastating and concerning and can affect your appearance in different ways depending on your gender, age, and ethnicity. Alopecia areata treatment, if started at the onset of the diagnosis, can be very successful and reduce the likelihood of further episodes. Look deeply into your diet and overall health and consider steroid injections or micro needling procedures. We have seen strong promising results with the above treatments. With androgenic alopecia, although very different in nature and pattern of hair loss, a holistic approach is the best place to begin as well. Hormones, thyroid, genetics, diet, and overall health are also key drivers adding to the genetic predisposition. Don’t blame your family! Eighty million of us experience some form of hair loss during our lifetime and blaming our amazing families isn’t the way to go! JANUARY 2 0 2 2 | C I TYL I FE STYL E . C OM/B R E N T WO O D

HELP HEAL, TRANSFORM AND GIVE OPPORTUNITIES TO WOMEN SURVIVORS OF TRAFFICKING, VIOLENCE AND ADDICTION
“Jewelry is a very personal thing; it should tell a story about the person who’s wearing it," insists Garance Daré, French fashion blogger, photographer, author and illustrator. If that's true for all, then the heartfelt jewelry created by one group of women tells volumes of stories about persevering over calamities and about unwavering support from those purchasing the resulting adornments. Sanctuary Project is a nonprofit and social enterprise hybrid, which means the group sells jewelry to drive social goodness by training and employing survivors of trafficking, violence, addiction or incarceration. "Anyone, from any walk of life, can feel beautiful simply by wearing jewelry. It's the finishing piece, and I've always thought jewelry is a wonderful transformation tool," observes Holly Christine Hayes, founder and CEO of Sanctuary Project, and a survivor of life-threatening circumstances herself. She launched the nonprofit during February 2018 with only one other survivor and the mission to provide a safe community for women to increase practical skills while restoring their lives and souls. The jewelry is designed and packaged by the women employed, with 100% of sales dedicated to providing more job opportunity and training to survivors. Now, she's working with about 35 ladies. The idea to create jewelry as a life pathway came from Holly visiting Thailand in 2012, where she witnessed women exiting sex trafficking from Bangkok brothels. She says she watched survivors make jewelry, which they sold to help support their rescue goals. "They stopped and celebrated each time a woman finished a piece. There was such pride and self-esteem building, and that's when I realized there was something incredibly special about the act of making jewelry together," she adds. After recently relocating from Austin, Texas, to the Nashville region, Holly says she's in discussions with possible Nashville office locations as well as local nonprofits who want to partner. "With every purchase going directly to help someone in need, every time shoppers support the Sanctuary Project, they have a real and meaningful impact on a woman’s life. In fact, a $40 purchase funds one survivor's participation in our job training program for a whole day," Holly explains. Each of the group's handmade pieces is made to inspire others. Shoppers can look forward to new jewelry collections during 2022 for spring, summer and the holiday periods.
THERE ARE SEVERAL WAYS TO SUPPORT THIS INITIATIVE: • Purchase the group's jewelry. • Donate funding. • Sponsor a survivor's training/employment for a day, a week or a full month. The job training program involves 8 hours a week of community time, job training activities, jewelry making and order fulfillment. • Support a survivor-leader staffer. • Encourage candidates to apply for a position with the program -- women of all skill levels are welcome. January is National Slavery and Human Trafficking Prevention Month. Holly reminds that trafficking is happening in every community of every country, including Tennessee. She says the average victim of trafficking is believed to enter commercial exploitation at 13 years young. In support of preventing trafficking, Sanctuary Project will offer special sales via the website and social media each Saturday during January. "Exploitation is ripe everywhere. We need to always remember there are vulnerable people in all local communities, and to come alongside them to help," says Holly. SanctuaryProject.com
