December Holidays and Giving The holidays are here and as the spirit of the season is among us, we often try to replicate what made the season feel so magical to us in our youth. The traditions we set for our own families often mirror some of what we experienced as a child whether it is the smells, the sounds, the lights, the holiday activities or a combination of it all that reflects that best. This month, we wanted to highlight the magic of the season and what our city has to offer that helps spread holiday cheer. We’ve compiled a gift guide to make your shopping easier and that also supports our local businesses. We also wanted to share what our area has to offer this holiday season for entertainment and ways to give back. While this season can be beautiful for some, it can be painful and lonely for others, especially those who have recently lost a loved one. In the true spirit of the season, let’s take care of those in our community that need assistance or who are alone. My hope for you this season is that you feel love and peace and that we all remember to take care of each other extending grace, empathy and love.

In warmer months when people are out and wearing T-shirts and shorts, they know to lather on sunscreen and moisturizers to protect their skin to make it look soft and silky. But, when it gets colder, skin care can sometimes become less of a priority, even though there’re many issues that can arise. “The number one winter issue I see is dry skin, and when that worsens, a condition called eczema develops,” says Dr. David Greeson of Brentwood Dermatology. “We also see a lot of seborrheic dermatitis, which is essentially dandruff, and hand dermatitis where hands dry out and crack.” So, what can be done to avoid these skin problems when the temperature starts to drop? “For eczema, the main thing is to use mild cleansers,” he says. “Unscented body washes are preferred, and be sure to use a moisturizer within three minutes of getting out of the bath or shower. You want to trap some water in your skin before it evaporates.”

There are many over-the-counter products that can be used if symptoms aren’t severe enough to warrant a doctor's visit. “If you like body wash, Cetaphil RestoraDerm is a good product, but if you prefer bars, there’s a Cetaphil Bar and a Dove Unscented bar.” Avoiding very hot showers is advised because hot water strips oils from the skin. For moisturizers, Dr. Greeson recommends fragrance-free Neutrogena Hydro Boost Body Gel Cream, Cetaphil Cream and CeraVe Cream. For hand eczema, moisturize your hands frequently with a product like O'Keeffe's Working Hands Cream and wear gloves when cleaning or dishwashing. “Detergents strip grease off of a plate, so they will also strip the oils out of your hands,” he says. If these issues become more severe, for example, developing a persistent itchy rash, or what looks like dried honey develops on the affected area, that usually means a secondary infection. It’s then time to see a professional. “There are prescription treatments that typically involve topical steroids, and in some cases, we may also use a non-steroid anti-inflammatory medication,” says Dr. Greeson. “Very severe cases can require oral steroids.” Because all the dermatologists at Brentwood Dermatology are highly trained and board certified and have a wealth of experience, Dr. Greeson says patients get the right treatment and products for particular conditions. “There are a lot of TikTok skin specialists who are marketing products, and these recommendations are often going to be based on whatever they can sell. Although we do sell cosmetic products at the office, I always give recommendations that are over the counter. I don’t profit from them.” For overall skin health, don’t forget sunscreen. Just because it’s cold doesn’t mean the skin isn’t soaking up UV rays. Dr. Greeson was familiar with dermatology from an early age because he had some issues with a form of eczema as a child, and a dermatologist helped him. “I was familiar with the specialty, and when I was in residency, I was just drawn to it because it’s visually oriented. I could see my patients improve and progress.” He treats patients of all ages (infants to elderly) and performs procedures for skin cancers, cysts and lipomas. “It’s a mix of medicine and surgery, which I like.” Originally from Georgia, Dr. Greeson recently moved with his wife, Beth, and 15-year-old son, Luke, to Brentwood, which he says they are enjoying immensely. “We built a house that accommodates not just us, but my mother and my in-laws, so we’re all under one roof, which is a blessing.”

Relatable interior designer, television host and locally based lifestyle influencer Lauren Makk was instrumental in HGTV Urban Oasis' design home in Nashville. Additionally, she's willing to share some inspiring design ideas with Brentwood Lifestyle readers. If Lauren and her helpful advice seem very familiar, it should. She's known for renovation space makeover TV shows and competitions, such as Design Star: Next Gen (2021), Bake or Break (2022) and Shop Class (2020). She also provided real estate expertise as the co-host and home life-stylist on ABC’s talk show, FABLife. She spearheaded the Emmy Award-Winning show, Trading Spaces, and the hit home renovation show Drill Team for A&E, too. At press time, she was flying to New York to film a Christmas Special for celebrity cook and TV personality Rachael Ray. She says the Rachael Ray show is about fun and easy DIY holiday entertaining. "It was a blast!" Lauren's signature approach to affordable luxury, as well as her homegirl-next-door charisma, is noticed and appreciated by her audiences. By incorporating “relaxed sophistication” into her approaches, she says she draws inspiration from architecture and from how clients are actually functioning in their spaces. She grew up in Oklahoma watching her mother renovate and flip houses. Then her design career ramped up after college while she was designing model homes in Los Angeles. "Bold, bright, clean and classic definitely sums up my design style," surmises Lauren. "So holiday-related designing is certainly my fun time."

Lauren says she loves out-of-the-box ways to approach decorating for the holidays. To that end, she's happy to share the following fun, budget-friendly design tips for adding extra spirit into the upcoming holiday season:

using one pattern as a tablecloth, another pattern as a runner, and even cut out rectangles or other shapes in a third for my placemats. The effect is breathtaking, and I can throw it all in my recycle bin when my guests leave."

1. Have some extra ornaments? Throw them in a cute dish or bowl. These little orbs of opulence look great on a coffee table, entryway, or shelf. If the colors match one's decor, they can even be kept out all year long. "You could also string groups of them together on some fishing line to create a stunning mantle garland," she adds. 2. Wreaths aren’t just for front doors. Consider hanging smaller versions over upper kitchen cabinets, oven hoods or even around dining lights for an unexpected punch. "Just make sure they aren’t obstructing any light bulbs, and you’re good to go," she assures. 3. Think outside of the gift box when it comes to holiday gift wrap. Lauren says she likes to use coordinating paper as a disposable addition to her tablescape. "I layer them up by

JORDAN THOMAS DOESN’T BELIEVE IN ACCIDENTS OR COINCIDENCES

At the age of 16, Jordan Thomas lost both of his legs below the knee in a boating accident. Today, he is referenced as the best adaptive golfer on the planet with a physical disability. While recovering in the hospital in 2005, and facing his own future, Jordan discovered that kids outgrow prosthetics every year to 18 months and that not all insurance companies cover the costs. He says insurance never pays for activity limbs. "Parents have to pay out-of-pocket for their child to be able to run. The more I learned about how insurance companies deflect responsibility to pay for covering prosthetics that are fundamental to a child’s development, the more I was outraged.” That’s when he formed the Jordan Thomas Foundation. “The way to sustain the work is with passion. My purpose for being on this planet is to provide prosthetics for kids. I pursue it like hell every day," he assures. Jordan says he finds that golf provides the opportunity to share the work of the foundation. “It’s a big part of my life and an element of who I am,” he adds. “I play golf at a very, very, very high level. That was shown in the US Adaptive Open. But I don’t play to compete, I play because of the relationships. It gives me the opportunity to be around people I care about and offers a message of inspiration and hope.” Jordan is focused on growing the game of golf to make it more inclusive and diverse. “There are a lot of barriers to golf if you’re a person with a disability. Being able to encourage, motivate, and inspire people is a big joy.” He’s also passionate about mental health awareness and the struggles that aren’t apparent on the surface. “People will see that I’m a CNN Hero, or in People magazine, or that I was on the Golf Channel or in Golf Digest. It’s often portrayed as a heroic endeavor. Some bits are, but that doesn’t tell the whole story of the depression and anxiety and the fear and the shame and the guilt. The work

to learn how to walk again was a lot easier than the work of trying to heal the wounds that weren’t visible. It’s very easy for people to otherize, like I must have been born with something that was different, but no. I just had to embrace the work. The physical, emotional, spiritual, psychological, all the work. That is the only way I've gotten to where I am today. I dove in.” When asked how that part of his journey started, Jordan says, “I attempted it early on. My parents made help available to me. I wasn’t ready when I was 16, 17, 18 years old. What I found was alcohol. That was really effective for a number of years, and then it was really ineffective. For a while, it helped with pain and body shame. I was an able-bodied kid at 16 and all of a sudden I lost my legs and my first thought was ‘what will girls think?’ I had to contend with all of that stuff. I had to get sober from alcohol because I was self-medicating my feelings. I had to be willing to look at the pain, grief and trauma. It was the only way I was able to integrate that loss into my life. “I don’t believe in accidents or coincidences anymore. That journey was required to get me where I am today. Now I’m in a place where I feel more fulfilled, more enriched, more empowered, and more connected with the community that supports me than I’ve ever felt before. I don't think that you could find a single person on the street who doesn’t have a family member or someone they know very closely who either deals with depression and anxiety or substance abuse. There's still a taboo around it. Sharing requires people to have the courage to be vulnerable and real. That takes the power away from it and erases the shame. We’ve got to start talking about it and sharing authentically and vulnerably, or what’s the point?” JordanThomasFoundation.org

On behalf of those who don’t work on holidays, Brentwood Lifestyle staffers share gratitude to those who do, such as emergency dispatchers, hospital staff, convenience store operators, veterinarians, retail employees, news anchors/reporters and tow truck drivers. Often on the clock during the holidays are local ambulance teams and EMS professionals. Michele Simpson, Williamson Medical Center Emergency Medical Services' director of marketing and communications, says the unit consists of 160 personnel. She says they staff 17 ambulances and three field supervisors 365 days a year. Sharing what that business-as-usual-on-holidays experience is like are Michael Wallace, CCPM, MBA, CCP-C, NRP and Williamson County EMS director, along with Mark King, Williamson Medical Center EMS assistant director.

HOW DO YOU MENTALLY PREPARE FOR WORKING THE HOLIDAYS? Michael: EMS personnel realize that emergencies never stop happening, including holidays. As a matter of fact, depending on the holiday, volume is often enhanced. We would, of course, prefer to spend time

with our families on holidays, but we also consider it a privilege to stand in the gap and help those in need when they are having an emergency, which can be particularly difficult when they happen on holidays. As a leader of emergency services personnel, I am always acutely aware and appreciative of the sacrifice that each of our providers makes when they work on holidays or even special circumstances. Their service matters and their families miss them, but also support their efforts, which is inspiring. Mark: The families of our EMS personnel are extremely supportive of their loved ones and understand that due to the nature of the important work they do, they might not be able to be home on the official day of some holidays. Many of these families selflessly adjust their personal holiday plans (to before or after the actual holiday) so they are able to celebrate together as a family. This genuine support and pride in their loved ones are vital in our EMS professionals’ abilities to successfully function in their service of caring for others.

WHAT ARE THE HARDEST ASPECTS OF WORKING HOLIDAYS? Michael: The hardest aspect of working holidays is seeing the enhanced impact that it has on patients and families when emergencies occur. It often leaves a memory that reoccurs for them every time that holiday occurs in the future. Mark: I agree with Michael’s comments. Without a doubt, seeing patients and their families hurting/ struggling on days on which the rest of the community is celebrating, is a tough thing to witness.

WHAT ARE THE BENEFITS OF WORKING ON HOLIDAYS? Michael: It is a privilege to serve those in need anytime, but it's an extra privilege on the holidays because of how impactful it can be on them. Mark: While we might be away from our families during the holidays, we celebrate together as a work family. Our teams come together on holidays and we share a special meal together; sometimes just us, but often with other public safety teams (like the fire and police departments). Additionally, it’s always heartwarming to have community members stop by our stations to spread holiday cheer through special treats and/or words of encouragement.

WHAT'S THE MOST EVENTFUL HOLIDAY SHIFT YOU'VE EVER HAD? Michael: New Year’s Eve several years ago in another state: We had such a high volume of vehicle accidents,

multiple shootings and a series of arson-related structure fires across the community, that we had to call in personnel from home to staff additional ambulances. It felt as if we were in mass casualty mode for the entire night. Mark: I don’t have one particular holiday that I would call the “most eventful,” but each holiday I’ve worked holds unique memories that will remain with me always.

HOW WILL YOU OBSERVE YEAR-END HOLIDAYS THIS YEAR? Both Michael and Mark: We each always plan our family gatherings in conjunction with the needs of our department. And as a department, we diligently work together to try and cover vacation requests as best we can while ensuring that staffing needs are appropriately met and sometimes even enhanced depending on the projected needs of the community. Beyond that, no matter what day it happens, we will find ways to celebrate with our families at home, as well as with our colleagues at work.

Homes are now more expensive to build, cars cost more to fix, and there is much more of a legal atmosphere. Therefore, buying adequate limits of liability is important and everyone should consider a personal liability umbrella policy. Also, with respect to homeowners, each person should be taking a close look at the replacement value on their policy and also their contents coverage.

WHAT ARE SOME COMMON MISTAKES PEOPLE MAKE WHEN SELECTING INSURANCE? People sometimes look to cut costs by sacrificing coverage, which I would never advise. Having low limits of liability on auto coverage does not get you very far in today’s world if you are involved in an accident, particularly if you cause bodily injury. Another mistake is not having adequate replacement cost on your dwelling or having actual cash value settlement on your contents or roof. Basically, if you have actual cash value settlement, the insurance company is going to depreciate every item in your home or your roof and you’ll be left paying the difference.

WHY IS IT SO IMPORTANT TO HAVE AN EXPERT ASSIST WITH CHOOSING THE RIGHT INSURANCE FOR ONE’S SELF AND FAMILY? Whether you say je t’aime, te quiero, te amo, or I love you, the way you say it varies just as much depending on who you’re saying those magical words to. So, when Gary Chapman first published his bestselling The 5 Love Languages: The Secret to Love that Lasts in 1992, his guide to giving and receiving love became a revolution with more than 20 million copies sold to date. Although, the type of love doesn’t matter in this equation. Dr. Berrylin Mangin, a psychologist and coach, says that, “The basis for giving gifts to people we love no matter what type of love, it’s all the same basis. It’s just the applications that may vary when thinking about what to give them.” If your love language is primarily physical touch, for example, a full body massage may be great for your significant other, but maybe not so much for your boss. Keeping in mind that how you like to receive gifts can differ from how you like to give, the same is so for the recipient. Berrylin suggests, “Just put your heart into what you give to let that person be seen and known and celebrated in this way.” And, if you’re giving out of guilt, she recommends examining what healthy boundaries look like. The key is in “Knowing yourself and being able to communicate it, which are both practices. The more you do it, the more comfortable you will become,” she adds. She helped us understand Chapman’s five love languages in order to say “I love you” this holiday season with these gift ideas in mind.

THE TOM AND JERRY RECIPE: The Batter: • 12 eggs • 1 ounce aged rum (anything from Foursquare would be delicious for this!) • 4 cups organic sugar • 1/2 ounce Allspice liqueur (St. Elizabeth's Allspice Dram is a great choice) • 2 teaspoons freshly ground nutmeg • 1 teaspoon powdered cinnamon • 1 teaspoon powdered cloves • 1 teaspoon Maldon sea salt • 1/2 teaspoon ground mace Separate the eggs: beat yolks in a stand mixer, slowly adding the rum, for a minute or so until they lighten. Gradually add sugar, and keep beating until it dissolves. Add the spices, and beat to incorporate. In a separate bowl, beat the egg whites until soft peaks form. Gently fold in the egg whites to the yolk/spices/ booze mixture. If making ahead, cover and refrigerate until it's Tom and Jerry time. With the booze in this mixture, it will keep for at least a week. The Drink: • 9 ounces Tom and Jerry batter • 24 to 32 ounces whole milk, hot • 6 ounces aged rum • 4 ounces cognac Garnish: • grated nutmeg and cinnamon stick In a heatproof punch bowl combine the batter and hot milk, and slowly add the booze, whisking as you go. Serve in pre-warmed mugs or cups, and garnish with freshly grated nutmeg and a cinnamon stick. For the true Tom and Jerry experience, look for the vintage mid-century bowls and cups on eBay or antique stores.

Giving Campaign Now in its third year, the City Lifestyle Giving Campaign will give away $300,000 this holiday season to help individual community members who would benefit from a helping hand during their time of need. But they need YOUR HELP to make it happen! OPRY COUNTRY CHRISTMAS The Grand Ole Opry has been called the home of country music, and as the saying goes, there’s no place like home for the holidays. In 2021, Opry Country Christmas debuted for its inaugural season, bringing beloved holiday songs and country artists together to celebrate a new Christmas tradition in Music City. This year, Opry Country Christmas is back and even better than before with double the shows for the 2022 season, each brimming with beloved, Nashville-influenced stories and songs filled with holiday spirit. “In the past, there hadn’t been Christmasrelated Opry programming,” says Dan Rogers, executive producer of the Grand Ole Opry. “Of course, the closer we get to Christmas day, the more likely you are going to hear holiday favorites on stage. This is the first time this iconic show has created its own holiday performance.” In true Opry fashion, each Opry Country Christmas show is filled with varying styles of music spanning generations, plus storytelling and comedy. Hosted by Grammy-award-winning trio the Gatlin Brothers, each show features at least one guest artist and a single spotlight artist to conclude the show. “This is where Music City and the holidays truly converge,” Dan says. “Not only is it the best of the Opry with a holiday flair in that you

There is more often than not a touch of bluegrass, and there's, you know, the rocking side of Christmas.” Planning the Opry Country Christmas show is no small feat. For the 2022 lineup, planning began immediately after the 2021 show wrapped due to its rousing success. Prior to the announcement this summer that the show would be returning, several acts had already been booked. “I think we all looked at each other and said, ‘Wow, we feel really good about [the show],’” Dan shares. “People were interested from the get-go. It was just really interactive, lively, smiles on people's faces, multigenerational…all those things you want in a holiday performance. We really started planning the minute we finished last year.” One of the most interesting aspects of the show stems from the city’s robust country music history, as many holiday favorites have unique (and unknown) ties to Nashville. What are they? The stories will be

thoughtfully revealed throughout the show, so guests must visit to find out! “We hope people leave with a great appreciation for the music, but also for Nashville's contributions to the holidays,” Dan adds. “Most importantly, it’s one of the few places on Earth where you can see Santa play an electric guitar.” Beginning November 27 and running periodically through December 22, this year’s lineup includes headliners Lauren Alaina, Scotty McCreery, Chris Janson, Trace Adkins and Mandy Barnett, plus appearances from renowned Opry members. Audience members can expect a 2-hour, two-act show, with beverages available to purchase onsite. “To me, the Opry Country Christmas show is the quintessential way you can celebrate the holidays in Nashville,” says Dan. “It speaks to what our city and our region hold dear and our collective history.
