BRENTWOOD MOURNS DEATH OF RETIRED FIRE CHIEF/STATE FIRE LEADER Brentwood Fire & Rescue Department retired Fire Chief Kenny Lane passed away following complications from heart surgery. He was hired in 1986 as one of three captains to help create Brentwood’s municipal fire department. Prior to Brentwood, he served with the fire department in Savannah, Georgia. In Brentwood, he served as captain/shift commander until being appointed fire marshal in 1992. The chief was instrumental in developing the Tennessee Firefighter Memorial at the Fire and Codes Academy in Bell Buckle, and was a Brentwood Noon

The Brentwood Historic Commission also hosted the 11th Annual Battle of the Minds History Bowl in February for Williamson County High School students where Centennial High School won the top prize, followed by Ravenwood High in second and Nolensville in third.
SEPT. 6 DEADLINE FOR ENTERING BRENTWOOD’S $1,500 BEST ASH CONTEST Someone will win up to $1,500 in Brentwood's Best Ash contest hosted by Brentwood city staffers and the Brentwood Tree Board members. Deadline to enter the contest is midnight on Sept. 6, 2021. This initiative is a photo and mapping contest designed to help educate the community about the invasion of the Emerald Ash Borer and its attack on ash trees, says city commissioner and Tree Board member Ken Travis. T-shirts and prizes were randomly given away during the contest, thanks to sponsor State Volunteer Mutual Insurance Company. There are two judging categories for entries, which include the photo and location of an ash tree. Photo entries will be judged on artistic expression, originality, creativity and demonstration of the theme, Brentwood’s Best Ash. The second category is for ash tree location, and winners are determined by the total number of unique locations submitted per entrant. For both categories, the tree must be an ash species tree and located within the Brentwood city limits. Submit

TENNESSEE BEER, WINE AND SHINE FESTIVAL RETURNS ON OCT. 16 The 11th annual Tennessee Beer, Wine and Shine Festival is slated for Oct. 16 from noon to 5 p.m. on the grounds of the historic Two Rivers Mansion in Donelson. The annual outdoor event raises funds for local nonprofit organizations in the Hermitage and Donelson communities. “We're eager to invite guests back to enjoy local, regional and national samples of brews. All attendees take home a commemorative glass and will be invited to our official after-party at Scoreboard Sports Bar & Grill,” says Bill LaFollette, chair of the Tennessee Beer, Wine and Shine Festival’s volunteer planning committee. 20

At Nashville-based Any Old Iron clothing design studio, concepts and products spring from anything but ‘any old’ ideas -- and Any Old Iron garments beckon to fashionistas with varied dynamics in play. Any Old Iron founder, designer and stylist Andrew Clancey moved his flagship British-themed boutique from New York City to Nashville during October 2014. He began dressing Music City’s musicians and fashion-forward locals. Now a retail store, Any Old Iron’s clients include Beyoncé, Lady Gaga, Cher, Ozzy Ozbourne, Kate Bosworth, Taylor Swift, Elton John, Cardi B, Florida Georgia Line, Bruno Mars, Cyndi Lauper, Nikki Minaj, the Jonas Bros, The Black Crowes, Meghan Linsey, The Shindellas and Jane Fonda. Miranda Lambert was one of his first Nashville clients, he recalls. “We add new sizzle designs every month, based on music-inspired flair,” says Andrew, who relays that his younger self used to rush to dress like new music artists that he discovered or bands he enjoyed. As a Yorkshire, England native, Andrew likes that the name “Any Old Iron” also is an Old English music hall song that references a young man’s style and fashionable art of dressing – a quality that he assures is distinctly English, and, ever-present in his brand’s aesthetic. A chance meeting at an Irish wedding led to Andrew’s first retail store as a multi-brand showcasing of British designers to shoppers in the United States. It’s been an ambitious, soulful journey since. “I make things that I like to wear, which sometimes are like a punked-up Liberace approach. I try not to follow trends, and I really like old punk with disco. I like the individualism of the whole Punk movement,” he says. “My clothes reflect an alternative music mixture, which certainly includes country.” NEW DRESS LINE WITH A TWIST New this month is Andrew’s fresh dress collection. “This collection is a foray beyond sequins for me, and they’re digitally printed. The dresses are easy to wear, and are meant to comfortably go from day to evening. They are bold, bright and colorful,” he reveals. With various fashion shows coming, Andrew says his new, full collections will include his “greatest hits with a few surprises.” For Nashville Fashion Week during Oct. 12-16, Andrew says each designer is only allowed to feature 10 pieces each. “We’ll have some fully hand-beaded pieces for the runways, along with fusion of new, one-of-a-kind elements,” he adds. Andrew premiered his first collection at Nashville Fashion Week during 2016. CUSTOM ORDERS The Any Old Iron team has access to an off-site tailor, with the shop also offering ready-to-wear items. Andrew recently designed a custom suit for Sam Williams, the grandson of country music pioneer Hank Williams and the son of outlaw legend Hank Williams Jr. “I got great satisfaction from that. But everyone who comes through our door can be their own celebrity with individual measurements and custom clothes. We’re very relaxed and easy-going,” he says. In fact, when asked how he decides what to wear, Andrew admits he has a go-to look with a basic template, but that he doesn’t think too much about it, although

he does say he always liked to dress “differently.” Rather, he lets his intuition lead the way -- often with symbols of skulls, stars and lightning bolts. “Any challenge is interesting,” says the designer of new projects stemming from companies or high-profile clients. Saying that he’s inspired by making their own textiles, Andrew’s currently working on uniquely branded pajamas for the global gin distiller Bombay Sapphire. AROUND THE FASHION CORNER During the early stages of the recent pandemic, Andrew even made facial masks into fun statements by creating a signature, sequined version for both adults and children. When those masks kept selling out, Andrew says he wanted to do something more helpful in the fight against COVID-19 spreading. So he partnered with Med Threads Nashville, and donated cotton versions of the masks. He says he still helps supply masks to schoolchildren and college students, and will provide discounts to medical teams who may need them in bulk. He says his overall sales increased by 25 percent once his company joined some online clothing platforms. “We got the eyes of England and Europe during the pandemic, and gained an international following,” he adds. “Now we’re thinking people are ready for some going-out pieces. The daughter of NFL Hall of Fame quarterback Terry Bradshaw grew up on the outskirts of Dallas, Texas, before embarking on a successful music career in Nashville. Today, she stars in the hit reality TV series ”The Bradshaw Bunch” on E! Network, alongside her dad, stepmom and two sisters. While Rachel finds herself under a brighter spotlight today, that’s not what motivates this 34-yearold, multi-talented Texan. “I’m confident in my own skin, and that’s a trait I get from my dad,” Rachel explains. The difference between performing music before live audiences and filming a TV series is night and day to Rachel. “Everyone knows you’ve got to have thick skin to perform. The difference is when you’re playing music on stage, you can instantly relate to the crowd because you’re in the flesh with the audience. When filming TV episodes, it’s just you and the crew. You have to wait months to find out how fans and the media feel about the show.” In 2020, the inaugural season of “The Bradshaw Bunch” launched with success. It took six months to film 10 episodes. Season two took about four months and will debut Oct. 6. RACHEL’S STYLE Describing Rachel’s personal style is similar to herding wild mustangs. “I’m all over the place. I’ll dress like a Southern girl one day. Another day I’ll branch out into something more high fashion. I love sleek looks -- the classic look. The bottom line is I stick with what looks good on me.” Almost everything looks great on Rachel, yet her affinity for blazers sets her apart. “I’m a blazer girl, and I probably wear them five days a week. It’s my go-to signature look. Someday I hope to introduce my own blazer line.” When Rachel pops in to visit friends and write songs, there’s a chance you’ll spot her at one of several trendy spots in the Nashville area. She and her dad, Terry, had a delightful time posing for these photos at the gorgeous Perry’s Steakhouse & Grille in Cool Springs, certain to be a new hangout for Rachel and her entertainment friends. “Adele’s is one of my favorites. The bacon with cotton candy at Kayne Prime is amazing. I also like the Marsh House in the Thompson Hotel for its vibe and seafood. And I love the original Puckett’s in Leiper’s Fork for the small-town ambiance and yummy barbecue. It feels like you’re in paradise.” Now a brand ambassador for Hot Works, her next steps include writing a memoir and possibly introducing a perfume line. “I’ve always wanted to write a tell-all intertwined with personal advice. I’ve seen triumph and tragedy and I want to impact the lives of others.”

NATALIE HEMBY ASCENDS FROM WHAT SOME IN THE MUSIC INDUSTRY DESCRIBE AS “NASHVILLE ROYALTY.” No, she isn’t the daughter of a business tycoon or country megastar. Her dad, Tom Hemby, is a renowned musician who has recorded and toured alongside Amy Grant, Vince Gill, Michael McDonald, Kenny Loggins, Wynonna Judd and other musical heavyweights. Born in Illinois, Natalie and her parents relocated to Nashville in the late 1970s when he joined the Imperials Christian group. Two of her most impressionable childhood memories include hanging out in the tour bus with her dad and his fellow band members and pecking away for hours on Amy Grant’s white baby grand piano as her dad rehearsed and wrote songs. “I remember the first time I got on a tour bus and thinking how cool it was,” recalls Natalie. “My dad was probably one of the first people in Nashville to build a home studio. The music would resonate through the air vents of our house, and I would have to go downstairs and ask him to turn the volume down like he was a teenager and I was an adult.” Natalie’s own musical quest began with the piano and saxophone. “I wanted to play the flute, but my dad suggested the saxophone was much cooler.” The future hitmaker didn’t realize it at the time, but she truly was surrounded by Nashville royalty and its historical palaces. Natalie walked across the stage of the Ryman Auditorium — considered the “mother church” of country music — during her high school graduation ceremony without appreciating its history.

“I never cared about the Grand Ole Opry, the Ryman, or its stage growing up because Nashville was my hometown,” she says in a reflective tone. “But today, I’m in awe every time I enter the building. There’s so much history there and I felt much different the first time I stood in that magical circle. Sometimes we never understand where we come from until we get older.” Soon afterward, Natalie began writing songs, but not with the intent of making a living penning blockbuster hits. “I wasn’t trying to be a great songwriter, but like most 18-year-olds, I had so much emotional crap to get off my chest.” Next came a short tenure at Belmont University. “When I did realize what I wanted, I dropped out,” she says. Her first industry break came when Barbara Orbison offered her a publishing deal at Still Working Music. She got to work closely with mentor and master songwriter Tommy Lee James. Natalie then set her sights on snagging her own record deal. After a decade of struggling in the trenches, she put her star aspirations aside to focus on writing songs for others. “It’s hard watching your friends succeed when you feel like you’re not,” Natalie confides. Undeterred, the brown-haired beauty kept writing, eventually scoring a hit in 2006 with Lee Ann Womack, “Call Me Crazy.” Even brighter days lay ahead. Three years later, she co-wrote her first No. 1 song, “White Liar,” with Miranda Lambert. “I was driving down Elliston Pike the first time I heard ‘White Liar’ on the radio. What a thrill,” she remembers. A string of hits followed, including “Pontoon” by Little Big Town and “Crowded Table,” which received a 2021 Grammy for Best Country Song. Not only did Natalie co-write The Highwomen hit, but she was also asked to sing on the track and later invited to join Brand Carlile, Amanda Shires, and Maren Morris as the fourth leg of the highly-touted quartet. “The invitation to join the group was so intimidating,” Natalie admits. “I’m a songwriter and can sing fine, but there’s a star quality about those ladies, and I’m honored to be included.” Today, Natalie and her producer husband, Mike Wrucke, and family are enjoying the fruits of their labor, including a pontoon boat of their own. Her latest 11-song Fantasy Records project, inspired in part by Natalie’s fondness for 1990s hitmakers, is titled, “Pins and Needles.” It’s scheduled to be released in early October. Natalie realizes she doesn’t fit into any specific box. So, what’s her advice to aspiring song crafters and singers? “Age and experience are everything so never set your dreams aside. Just find a way to make them happen,” she suggests. Music lovers worldwide are lucky that Natalie followed her own advice. 42

“I think this diversity helps with our creativity in that we bring a wide knowledge base to every shoot we take on. It gives us a fun edge because we’re not just shooting from the same perspective -- bringing in a base of experience lends itself to capturing creatively every time.” Capturing special moments always has been the driving force behind Canaan’s passion for taking pictures. He says, “Even as a kid, what was always the most interesting to shoot were people. I loved capturing moments in time, and then getting into the darkroom and developing them and seeing how those moments were captured. And so to this day, what keeps me excited about photography is that you can stop a moment in time and hold onto it.” Photographs, he explains, become a part of families’ histories and they also help trigger memories. “You can tell stories based off of a memory from a photo, and it’s one you may have forgotten until you see that memory again.” Details Nashville was not created, he says, to fulfill their own egos. Instead, it’s really always been about capturing their clients in the best ways possible while also creating an environment where the team can continue to love what they’re doing. “If our egos ever get in the way of us serving our clients, well, then we will have lost sight of the big picture,” says Canaan. “I think that’s kept everything in perspective for us and has helped us stand apart.” Being in business for a decade has allowed him and his colleagues to share in their clients’ many unforgettable moments. “There’s been so many families that we’ve grown with over the years as they have continued to expand and change,” he says. “It’s been very special to be able to see couples that we photographed getting married in their early 20s and who now have three or four kids and here we are doing their family photos.” Canaan and his team are all about capturing who their clients are in real ways. “The photos are going to be something they can connect with years from now because they’re going to remember that moment and not the pose we put them in or the filter that we put over it. They are going to remember how they felt when they were laughing. That real response is what we’re looking to capture. Those emotions are the things that will last,” he concludes.
