CEREMONY HELD FOR OFFICER DESTIN LEGIEZA MEMORIAL HIGHWAY A ceremony was held on June 18 to commemorate the naming of The Officer Destin Legieza Memorial Highway, which is a segment of U.S. Highway 31, or Franklin Road, beginning at the intersection of West Concord Road and ending at the intersection of Murray Lane. The June date was the one-year anniversary of Officer Legieza’s death. His patrol vehicle was struck head-on by another vehicle driven by an impaired driver. An accompanying sign along Franklin Road in Brentwood was placed in his memory. “Destin would be so proud, and I’m sure he’s smiling down upon us today as we pay tribute to him and his memory,” Brentwood Police Chief Jeff Hughes reflects. 16

Emily chose four looks that range from breezy casual to the dressy woman on-the-go! “The wide-leg trouser pant is a staple this season!,” Goodin says, “Take it to the next level by keeping the look monochromatic (all white) or pairing it with soft tones such as this beautiful blush blouse. Model, Anne Marie, looked amazing in anything I put on her. She loved the blue, Northface dress paired with the light-weight windbreaker and white sneakers. But, as soon as she put on that white, ruffly blouse with the blue and white gingham pants, she was walking down the street like she was on a runway! (Tausha captured that moment impeccably!) Brentwood Blaze YOUTH FOOTBALL AND CHEER PROMOTE ATHLETICISM, CHARACTER AND SAFETY
FOR 29 YEARS, THE BRENTWOOD BLAZE YOUTH FOOTBALL AND CHEER PROGRAM HAS ALLOWED THOUSANDS OF MIDDLE TENNESSEE YOUTH TO DEVELOP LIFELONG SKILLS. Obviously, not every participant will play and cheer for an NFL team, yet boys and girls from ages 5 to 12 learn firsthand the benefits of teamwork and sportsmanship. As a Tennessee Youth Sports Alliance member, Brentwood Blaze teams compete against area teams from similar programs in a fun and safe environment. For those who think football and cheer basics are all that’s taught in this program, they’re in for a surprise. Brentwood businessman Don Borgeson has two boys, Burke & Brody, who participate in the football program, a daughter, Bella, who is a cheerleader, and he’s also a board member and coach. Although he and his family are excited about the upcoming season, they believe the program’s benefits extend far beyond the football field. His oldest daughter Keaton, went on the cheer in high school and is now a cheer coach herself. “This is my fourth year to be involved with the Brentwood Blaze program. My coaching philosophy is more about skills than drills. Each of our coaches focuses on teaching fundamentals that make playing fun and safe. Watching the kids develop skills that will last them a lifetime is fulfilling for everyone,” Coach Don says.

LOCAL LIMELIGHT (CONTINUED)
The 2021 Brentwood Blaze season for football and cheer teams begins on Aug. 28, with an initial training camp held July 26-29. Player and cheer evaluations take place the first week in August. Bowl games are on Aug. 14, followed by a jamboree on Aug. 21. Depending on the number of participants, the Blaze program will have 15-20 football teams, with about 20 kids on each team. The cheer program will probably have fewer squads, yet they will cheer for all teams during the season. Don wants parents of Blaze participants to know safety is the No. 1 priority when it comes to both football and cheer programs. “I hope the conversation about participating in the Blaze program starts at the kitchen table,” he stresses. “I hear from many parents that their child wants to play football, but one or both parents are concerned about safety. Believe me, I understand. That’s why we’ve invested in NFL rated helmets for maximum protection. Plus, our coaches constantly stress techniques that minimize injuries.” Another strategy designed to maximize safety is how coaches evaluate players. Football teams are divided by age and weight, ranging from the 5- and 6-year-old Pee Wee to the 11- and 12-year-old Varsity division. For example, football players in the 9-10 division are divided into three groups based on skill level with weight ranges between 95 and 115 pounds. Any player exceeding the limit is not allowed to advance or run the ball. Don encourages parents of participating boys and girls to enroll their children in the July training camp. “When kids participate in the camp, coaches can get a better feel for their athletic and skill level. We work hard to make sure players aren’t matched against players that are bigger and stronger. That’s one way we help minimize injuries, plus, it makes for more competitive games.” The Blaze season kicks off with a four-day, non-contact camp for football and cheer held July 26-29 at Crockett Park Fields from 5:30-8 p.m. The cost for the camp is $125 each. 30

Football players need to provide their own cleats, mouthpiece and practice pants. For the cheer program, the regular season costs $225 each, which includes a uniform and poms. Each cheerleader must provide their own shoes, leggings and long sleeve undershirts for when cooler fall temps arrive. Sherri Baker is the Brentwood Blaze cheer director. Even though the former Virginia Tech Hokies cheerleader no longer has a daughter in the program, she says she still gets enthused each summer as the gridiron season draws near. “I cheered from age four all the way through college,” says director Sherri. “The Blaze cheer program gives girls that aren’t on competitive cheer teams the opportunity to learn about sideline cheer. They learn all the cheer basics and also have tons of fun. More importantly, I want our cheer girls to radiate confidence and learn to be a cheerleader in every aspect of their lives.” Besides Sherri, several cheer coaches are returning, including others with college cheer experience. Both football and cheer coaches are thrilled about the upcoming season. Outside of a love for their respective sports, sometimes coaches see the results of their efforts in later years. “It’s amazing to see how the kids develop year after year,” Coach Don explains. “One of our assistant coaches ran into a former player at the mall last year. When he played, this kid was hard to reel in at times, and we initially had difficulty coaching him. Today, he’s a different person. The coach was impressed with the young man’s disposition, how polite he was, and overall how he handled himself. We believe part of his maturity came from what he learned in our program. That makes everything we do worthwhile.” To inquire or sign up for Brentwood Blaze football and cheer programs, visit the organization’s website at BrentwoodBlaze.org.

IT’S NEVER TOO LATE TO GET IN SHAPE AND FOLLOW A HEALTHY LIFESTYLE. Brentwood Nutrition, which opened in March, helps customers stay the course. “We have meal replacement shakes that are high in protein, low in carbs and low in sugar,” says owner and former firefighter/paramedic Chad Clarke. They are also low calorie, he says, but keep you full and satisfied with amazing flavors, such as Banana Pudding and Snickers. In addition to the shakes, Brentwood Nutrition has loaded energy teas with fun flavors, including strawberry and watermelon. “They’re full of antioxidants, vitamin B6 and B12, and have guarana for mental focus,” says Chad. “They are also thermogenic, contain no sugar and have only 24 calories.” Sara Buchanan, a local fitness trainer and Chad’s girlfriend, also helps manage the shop. “We both have a passion for fitness and prioritize fueling our bodies after workouts,” she says. “You need to fuel your body with good nutrition and high protein to reach your fitness goals. Even if you don’t want to build a lot of muscle, to lose fat or tone up you have to build some.” Adds Chad, “What everybody struggles with is the diet part and we bring the convenience. You can come in and be out of here in a couple of minutes with your healthy shake and your energy tea. Then go walking, maybe add 10 minutes to walking your dog, or get out there and be active with your kids.”

Being a trainer, Sara finds people overanalyze things when it comes to getting into better shape. “It’s really just as simple as getting in a 45-minute workout and it doesn’t always have to be high intensity, but just getting your body moving for that boost of metabolism, that boost of energy. It’s also getting that protein in, getting nutrients in, because the workout is maybe 7% of the work. You can’t outwork a bad diet.” Brentwood Nutrition is for everyone, says Chad. “All body types, all ages. It’s for your mental health as well. Working out is beneficial mentally and physically and having a well-balanced diet means you’ll feel so much better. There’s a whole other life out there for you to live.” “It’s also about living longer, living healthier and being able to walk a block without being out of breath, or keeping up with your children or grandchildren,” says Sara. “Fitness and being healthy is not a fad. It’s not a race or sprint to your goals, but more like a marathon -- a slow steady pace of living a healthier life.” To pick up one of these delicious shakes or teas, and find out more about healthy living, visit Chad and Sara at Brentwood Nutrition or go to their Facebook page.

with beer taps on them,” says Sean. “They’re incredibly versatile as to where they can go and where they can park. We’ve actually built out the system to accommodate wine, cocktails and non-alcoholic beverages.” So far, they’ve taken their trucks to birthday parties, baby showers, corporate events, and of course, weddings. Although there is a 2-hour minimum, they’ve handled a varied number of guests. “We’ve served up to 350 people at weddings, and we’ve also done as few as two,” he says. “That was for an anniversary party for [athletes] Shawn Johnson and Andrew East. It was just the two of them at home.” Sean has been full-time military with the U.S. Air Force for 18 years, and Kay is a stay-at-home mom of four children. They say Tap Truck is a fun transition into their next chapter.

SARAH UMSTEAD TRAVELED FROM CALIFORNIA TO TENNESSEE IN 2011. It didn’t take long for the young entrepreneur to develop a keen interest in real estate and historic properties and decided to use her skills to style and renovate landmark properties. Along with her builder husband, Mike, this duo manages some of the most remarkable rental properties in Middle Tennessee.

Brentwood Lifestyle | July 2021
After visiting Leiper’s Fork, the scenic and quaint village a few miles southeast of Franklin, Sarah became enthralled with the area’s tranquility and beauty. “It’s Americana with the city promise, a place where the road winds so subtle you’d think it rolled in with the breeze,” Sarah writes on her company website, HouseAndSanctuary.com. Sarah slowly began building a base of rental property homes in 2011, eventually managing six properties. “When we first began advertising on VRBO, only a handful of properties in the area were on the site,” says Sarah. “I was definitely one of the first to style our properties to make them more appealing to potential renters.” As a result of some changes in her personal life, Sarah took a break from the vacation rental business. However, her love of real estate and renovating older properties resurfaced again. What began with purchasing one property for a renovation project has elevated Sarah to managing nine distinctive vacation rental properties, all within what some have coined as, “Nashville’s Big Back Yard.” The first property Sarah managed is a project she and her husband undertook called Milk + Honey, which they purchased in 2018. The renovation took more than two years and was initially undertaken as a project the couple hoped to flip. Located in the tiny community of Lynnville (population 409), the two-story, four-bedroom farmhouse offers beautiful wood floors and modern amenities with a touch of rustic charm in the interior decor. Once Sarah decided to keep the home and offer it as a vacation rental property, she and Mike, who she describes as “my creative, super talented, perfectionist, contractor hubby,” focused on styling their dream cottage. “Homes that I manage need to have some type of character. All of my properties have the aesthetics necessary to attract a certain type of clientele,” explains Sarah. “I want our guests to be inspired by the decor and property. After all, anyone can provide a place to sleep, but it’s also important to offer a place to create memories.” In addition to her own, today, Sarah manages 12 properties, all of which came about through word-of-mouth. The largest property under the House + Sanctuary umbrella is the 6,000-square-foot home in Leiper’s Fork known as The Big Blue House. This gorgeous property sits on five acres and offers stunning views of the rural

Middle Tennessee landscape. It sleeps up to 15 guests, and the outdoor fire pit provides guests a place to warm themselves on chilly fall and spring evenings. Other properties in or near Leiper’s Fork include Sweeney Cottage, located in the heart of the village, Storybook Cottage, Hargrove House, Wildflower Farm and Millville. Just South of Leiper’s Fork sits the small town of Columbia, Tennessee, where Sarah manages two unique properties. One is Two Lanes Guesthouse, outfitted from the personal antique collection of Mike Wolfe, from American Picker fame. Sarah’s boutique rental management style is certainly impacting the upscale, short-term rental market in Middle Tennessee. “It’s fun to do something that you absolutely love,” Sarah notes with excitement. “I hope our guests enjoy the personal touches we provide. I feel like it shows because of all the repeat business.” 805.698.7014 HouseAndSanctuary.com

For Him: Ray Bradbury's moving recollection of a vanished golden era remains one of his most enchanting novels. Dandelion Wine stands out in the Bradbury literary canon as the author's most deeply personal work, a semi-autobiographical recollection of a magical, small-town summer in 1928.
