Lifestyle Letter MARCH IS OUR MONTH OF ART—MAKING, COLLECTING, ADMIRING AND LEARNING. We love art because it gives us a glimpse of someone’s heart, the part of them we don’t see on the surface. We are all drawn to art in different ways. We like to look at and listen to art that makes us feel something, art that resonates with us. Through art, we learn about ourselves. As you read about the local artists in our community and their stories of passion and self-expression, we hope that you, too, are inspired to pursue what you love.

BRENTWOOD POLICE DEPARTMENT CELEBRATES 50TH ANNIVERSARY Feb. 1, 2021, marked 50 years since the Brentwood Police Department was created. Chief Howard Buttrey was hired to oversee the department development, and for the first two months, he was the only employee. He obtained a $40,000 grant from the federal government, and on April 1, 1971, hired three officers. Those officers began full-time patrol of the city, with one officer assigned to each of the day’s three shifts. Fifty years later, the department has 67 sworn officers, including one K9 patrol team, a dozen 911 dispatchers and six administrative personnel, a mobile crime scene investigation unit. A new Brentwood Police headquarters building is set to open this spring. The new facility will allow the department to exist in their own dedicated and secured facility located more centrally to all of Brentwood. The facility also will include an indoor gun range, a state-of-the-art firearms simulation system and a community room that will serve as the department’s courtroom, too. Plans are being made for a virtual grand opening due to COVID social gathering restrictions.

TELL US ABOUT YOURSELF! HOW HAVE YOU INCORPORATED YOUR CULTURE INTO YOUR RESTAURANTS? I was born in Laos and came to the U.S. as a toddler when my family fled communism. I grew up in Arkansas where I witnessed my parents’ work ethic as they worked two jobs to make ends meet. I spent a lot of time with my grandmother while my parents worked, and she really cultivated my passion for food. I was always helping her in the kitchen, and she showed me that in order for food to taste good, you have to put love and passion into it. By age six, I had started my own business. As soon as I could ride a bike, I pulled onions, peppers and cilantro from my grandmother’s garden and went around the neighborhood selling produce. Once I was in high school, this shifted, and I sold bowls of my grandmother’s noodles after school to friends. My mom was working two jobs, so these jobs were a great way for me to contribute. Family has always been a motivator for me. When my family opened King Market in Antioch, they asked me to put my hair stylist career aside to help the family business, and I was drawn into the restaurant business because of my love of food and of people. You’ll see the strong work ethic, passion for food, entrepreneurial spirit and familial ties from my culture and upbringing in action at Thai Esane. 5. TELL US ABOUT THE VIBE OF THE RESTAURANT/WHAT WAS YOUR VISION WHEN CREATING THE NEW BRENTWOOD SPACE? It’s a sleek space that has warm tones, as I want people to feel comfortable and welcome when they come in to eat. I also brought with me the iconic focal point from my Music Row location – a giant golden Buddha statue watching over the room. Visit them at ThaiEsane.com/Brentwood for menu. AMERICA’S MOST FAMOUS ANTIQUE PICKER SETS HIS SIGHTS ON MAKING SMALL SOUTHERN TOWNS ATTRACTIVE TO CITY DWELLERS
MOTORCYCLES OR COMIC BOOKS GROWING UP. Only a handful generate income from their hobby. Very few keep the most prized picks in their own climate-controlled garage. Then there’s Mike Wolfe. Born and raised in the Midwest, Mike’s personality showcases the characteristics of his upbringing. He’s friendly, talkative, and expresses a child-like excitement when asked about any item in his extensive collection. Watching him bounce

around his garage, pointing out his favorite finds and telling their stories shows his passion for what he does is still very much alive after all these years. Before Mike found fame on his hit TV reality show, American Pickers, he visualized a show featuring him rummaging through folk’s attics, barns, and garages, and buying his favorite finds. He pitched the show’s concept for five years, getting rejected by several production companies until the History Channel found his idea intriguing. Although the network expressed excitement over the project, neither their executives nor Mike had a grasp of what the show’s format would look like. “I’ve pitched many show concepts through the years,” Mike told us over a plate of fried chicken at Puckett’s in downtown Columbia, TN. “You’re not going to sell a show today without a well-developed format. It’s just not going to happen. We created what I refer to as ‘artifactual, transactional television.’ The change came when we introduced a transaction to the show.” Before filming even began, Mike became the executive producer, which has allowed him to shape the show into exactly what he wants it to be. As “American Pickers” begins its 11th year, no one can argue with the show’s success. The latest ratings have the broadcast as one of the most popular cable network reality shows. Besides a handful of cable news programs, few reality shows have American Pickers’ longevity. One reason is the show’s loyal fan base, and their love for the stories behind the unique items from the past. Mike’s finds from the show can be found at his two Antique Archaeology shops in LeClaire, IA and Nashville, TN. The Iowa location is in a two-story fabrication shop and is home base of “American Pickers”. The Nashville store located in the Historic Marathon Motorworks building showcases Mike’s antiques from floor to ceiling and unique home decor that will certainly be a conversation piece for years to come. SMALL TOWN PRESERVATION Just like his early instinct in capturing a key production role for his show, Mike’s decision to relocate to the South several years ago has proved positive for him. While exploring the communities in rural Tennessee, Mike fell in love with the small town of Columbia just south of Nashville. Driven by his passion for small town preservation, he found several historic buildings there he wanted to revive. One of the first was a building just off the town square that originally housed the local Chevrolet dealership and was built in 1947. Once the home of many of the local car dealerships, Mike is trying to restore this street to it’s former glory and designate it as Historic Columbia Motor Alley.

BACK STAGE (CONTINUED)
Mike also feels that creating inviting places for visitors to come stay in downtown Columbia’s heart will benefit the community. After purchasing a beautiful pre-1860s building right on the square, Mike kept the bike shop downstairs open and renovated the loft upstairs. Inspired by his decades of driving on two lanes, he named this vacation rental loft the Two Lanes Guesthouse. The loft’s decor highlights furnishings acquired through Mike’s travels, including antique wooden bikes hung from the ceiling, vintage guitars, and a 1951 vespa sitting in front of a massive antique circus poster ready to sit on for taking photos to share. The guesthouse also represents the first time that his fans have been able to see the way Mike envisions the pieces he finds in the dirt as unique home decor. While decorators have been purchasing from him for years, you can now see his vision for what some people see as rusty junk presented in style in his loft vacation rental. Constructed in 1857, the one-bedroom loft with 13 foot ceilings, original wood floors, and exposed brick also offers a direct view of the town’s square and historic courthouse through the full length wall of windows. Travelers can book their stay on the loft’s website or Airbnb. “The main reason I renovated the guesthouse is to set an example of what can happen when we invest in heritage tourism,” says Mike while giving our group a tour of the charming unit. “It’s important to have stylish, quaint, places to stay in growing communities. Once people start living and staying in downtown areas, the activity level and nightlife will increase and more businesses will benefit.” NASHVILLE’S BIG BACK YARD The COVID-19 pandemic obviously altered the filming and production schedule for “American Pickers”. However, the break allowed Mike to focus on some of his other new ideas. One of his recent projects is called Nashville’s Big Back Yard. Nashville’s Big Back Yard is as much an economic and tourism development project as it is an initiative. The project focuses on rural counties and small towns with populations of 5,000 or less along the historic Natchez Trace Parkway between the the music icons and creative hubs of Nashville, TN and Muscle Shoals, AL. Mike joined forces with Aubrey Preston for this project, a Middle Tennessee philanthropist that had the vision to protect rural areas like Leiper’s Fork by ensuring their historic preservation remained intact. 32

It takes only a few seconds to familiarize yourself with all the controls, everything works and is located precisely where it should be. As a professional car photographer, I do this all the time. I’m very fortunate to have driven just about every fast and interesting car you can think of. In terms of intuitive design, the 911 is in a class of its own. There is, of course, a touch screen but there is a button for everything used with regularity. No need to take your eyes off the road to scroll through endless menus to adjust the temperature. This same sense of intuition translates to the way the 911 drives.

DRIVER’S NOTEBOOK (CONTINUED)
The Drive Select button on the right of the steering wheel has five modes: Normal, Sport, Sport +, Individual, and Wet. In normal mode, the 911 Carrera S is as pleasant and predictable as southern California weather. With each turn of the dial comes a significant change in aggression. Shift into Sport + and the bullet quick PDK gearbox downshifts, the exhaust note is boosted, and the steering weight becomes heavier. In the center of the mode dial is another button: “Sport Response.’’ This button can be pressed at any time in any mode and it delivers 20 seconds of everything turned up to 11. Cruising along in normal mode and want to pass a Sunday driver? Press Sport Response, apply throttle and the 911 lights the afterburners leaving everything in its wake. Everyone knows the 911 is fast, but the 911 Carrera S is so fast that it is commonly road tested alongside exotic cars that fetch double or triple the price tag, and it rarely loses a head-to-head comparison. The experience of driving the new 911 is sublime. The ride is firm without being harsh and the handling inspires pure confidence. What stands out about this car is the complete lack of compromise. The 911 is a supercar that can be driven every day in any situation and is just as capable around town as it is on the racetrack. There are a few misses, the tire roar is ever-present at highway speeds and the infamous “shaver” shifter is a bit odd but after driving the new 911, my lasting impression is this car is as close to perfection as I’ve ever experienced. Anyone with knowledge of motorsports knows that Porsche loves to race and has more overall wins at Le Mans than any other brand, so if perfection is a moving target, the 911 is closing in fast.

sparking imagination ARTICLE SUE BALDANI
GROWING UP WITH A MOTHER WHO LOVED DOING ARTS AND CRAFTS, AND WHO SHARED THAT LOVE WITH HER FOUR CHILDREN, IT’S NO WONDER LYNN HARNEN ENDED UP OPENING AN ART STUDIO. Spark Art provides great entertainment for individuals, families and groups of friends. The studio opened in Brentwood during August 2020, right in the midst of the pandemic. Instead of that circumstance being a disadvantage, it ended up being a blessing for adults who were tired of binge watching television shows and for kids who were stuck in front of screens for large parts of most days. Here was a chance to put away the electronics and focus on making something beautiful. The concentration it takes, and the joy that’s found in creating something by hand usually doesn’t leave time for minds to drift or to be distracted by phones. In the studio, participants choose different colored sea glass, recycled glass pieces and porcelain tile pieces to arrange into pictures or designs on canvas or wood backgrounds. All skill levels are welcome. “If you’re not that creative and need something to get started, we have over 100 stencils, so you can actually stencil a design onto your canvas or wood and then go from there,” says Lynn. “We’re often just blown away by the creativity of people.”

Creating Beautiful Smiles
“I have had the opportunity to travel abroad to many different and amazing countries for modeling, been featured in countless magazines and advertisements, walked across the stage at Miss USA. Now I’m enjoying my passion of creating beauty daily at my salon in downtown Franklin. My smile, whether meeting a new client or posing for a picture, is always noticed and commented upon. Each and every time I’m asked, I recommend Dr. Kemp!”

After completing her role within the Miss USA pageant, Kristen continues to model. She also has become one of the industry’s most successful hair and makeup artists. In 2013 Kristen took charge of a small team that worked backstage doing hair and makeup at Paris Fashion Week. In addition to helping shape the designer’s vision and leading the team toward that goal, Kristen accepted the coveted role of modeling the finale dress to close the show, one of her long held dreams.

inspiration to canvas, sculptures or even graphic designs. Maria D’Souza, already an award-winning artist, found her creative outlet using beads and design talent on animal skulls to produce captivating works of art coveted by celebrities and collectors around the world. Maria was born in Portugal, and while following her dad’s job, lived on five different continents, spending three years living in Bahrain. As her artistic work transitioned from canvas to wood, she encountered artists using skulls in their designs and became transfixed on the idea of using beads. In fact, she’s the first artist to take this particular medium into the fine art world. “I’m an animal lover, so it’s imperative that the skulls I acquire come from ethically sourced providers,” says Maria. “Most of my domestic skulls, such as Texas Longhorns and Bison, are acquired from small family farms and animal sanctuaries, and have lived long lives. More exotic skulls are usually found in the wild and have died by natural causes or predators.

When Emily takes a break from songwriting, chances are she’s perfecting her roping skills with trainer Cody Jenson at Triple Creek Ranch, near Leiper’s Fork. 2020 taught Emily the importance of patience. When the pandemic interrupted her tour plans, she doubled down on her songwriting. GINA JULIAN: VIBRANT, SHOWSTOPPING COLOR FIELD PAINTINGS Hard-edge abstraction painter Gina Julian seeks to explore energy and motion through the use of flat color. This Nashville native enjoys evoking emotions by varying colors according to hue, saturation and value. “I’ve long been fascinated by effects of color on the human psyche,” she admits, confiding that she herself collects food art. She follows a style of abstract painting that’s often referred to as the color field painting movement that emerged in New York City during the 1940s and 1950s. Additionally, she’s guided somewhat by visual principles perfected during previously working as a graphic and web designer. “I’ve always loved art crawls and the art industry, painting in my spare time,” Gina says. ABOUT
BUILDING A CUSTOM HOME, IT CAN BE BOTH THRILLING AND INTIMIDATING. After all, homeowners can create their very own dream homes and get exactly what they want. On the other hand, they might be daunted by all that’s involved. Hidden Valley Homes in Brentwood has an experienced team of people to help make the process a lot easier. A family-owned company, it has been building high-end luxury homes for the past 12 years. “I think it’s the smaller things that overwhelm people,” says Matt Harris, Hidden Valley Homes general manager. “You know, the color of a countertop or the hardware on the cabinets in the kitchen. The good thing is that we have subcontractors, designers and vendors who are very knowledgeable in what they do, so they help our customers a lot.” “There are a lot of details involved between designing your blueprints, picking out your selections, and then the actual building process, so just finding a builder you’re comfortable with and that has an open line of communication really goes a long way,” says Lauren Pennington, the sales and marketing director. Matt says the process of building a custom house can be outlined as:
