In vogue now, she says, are transitional styles with clean lines, classic styling and neutral colors. It’s important to think about who will be using the space, and take into account lifestyle needs as well as beauty. “Functionality and comfort are also more important than ever, with performance fabrics being in high demand,” says Barbara. “With today’s hectic lifestyles, there are so many different fabric and finish options available, that are easier to care for and more family friendly. Neutrals are still at the top of client demand, particularly when it comes to major purchase items like upholstery or drapery.” Neutral, though, doesn’t necessarily mean a sedate beige. Muted shades of blues and greens also serve as neutral color palettes, and many designers and clients now regard typically richer colors, such as navy and olive as neutrals, which clients love. If unsure about what furniture to choose, what artwork to hang, or what colors will work best, there’s no need to do it alone and become overwhelmed. Stock & Trade has a team of talented sales and design consultants to assist with design needs, no matter how big or small the project may be. “Our design team is available to consult with clients in our showroom, or by appointment in the client’s home,” Christopher says. “They then build a design plan tailored to that client’s needs based on client feedback and information they’ve compiled from those consultations.” With a few exceptions, he says that most items at Stock & Trade are available from the showroom floor or store back-stock. “We also maintain a vast inventory in our distribution center. Lead time on special ordered items varies by vendor.” No one is sure what this new year will bring, but at least you and your family can have a beautiful, calm and safe place to relax, have fun, do schoolwork, or work from home. When things do start to reopen, you may not be in a big hurry to leave the peace and comfort of your newly redecorated home.

ALEX KOCH’S SMILE IS AS BIG AS A BASKETBALL COURT. As a noticeably gregarious and social youth, the 17-year-old lights up roomfuls of people with his grin and irresistible laughter. He’s quick to grab other’s hands to share intimate moments, doesn’t hesitate to join them in walks and definitely is always ready for a game of hoops. ...He just can’t verbalize any words he wants to share. Each day, Alex deals with a genetic disorder that only 1 in 70,000 people around the world have. Called Sanfilippo syndrome, or also known as mucopolysaccharidosis type III (MPS III), it’s named after Dr. Sylvester Sanfilippo, one of the U.S. doctors who described the condition in 1963. It’s a rare, autosomal-recessive enzyme storage disease that affects the brain and spinal cord. It’s caused by a buildup of large sugar molecules, which essentially manifest as protein overload in one’s body. When those types of subcells are working properly, they break down and remove fats and sugars from cells. This condition is a progressive, metabolic disorder that eventually causes fatal brain damage. There isn’t yet a known cure, and the average lifespan of those experiencing it is 17 years.

Alex’s Nashville-based parents, Matt and Julie Koch, began to worry when they started noticing cognitive, verbal and behavioral developmental delays when Alex was 3-5 years young. After years of doctors’ appointments, therapies, an incorrect diagnosis, and watching their son regress, they eventually learned Alex had this syndrome as he turned 10 years old. Matt says they got around the previous brickwall of unknowns when they finally discovered a Yale Medical Center university study in which Alex could participate. “Part of the challenge was that not a lot of doctors had seen this disease to even recognize it. But after the Yale diagnosis results, we were able to connect with experienced people who could help,” says Matt. “Although Alex can’t verbalize, people say they always feel good interacting with him. We are blessed every day that we have Alex in our lives.” WISHING ON A COURT When Julie and Matt were approached by a Make-A-Wish Middle Tennessee nonprofit volunteer, they quickly realized what might make a wonderful difference for Alex: an outdoor basketball court. Alex had been playing with a basketball since he was 2 years old, recalls Matt. The court became a reality in 2014, and was a complete surprise to Alex. That court allowed Alex to play sports with his brother, Jaxson, and anyone else who will take up a ball. Julie says the now 5-foot-11-inch Alex uses the court constantly. “He’s probably gone through 50 basketballs over the past six years,” chuckles Matt. “Make-A-Wish is simply life-changing for the youths they assist and their families,” says Matt, who decided to give back to the organization by serving as one of its board of directors for the past five years.

IN MANY WAYS, MACY FOWLER COULD BE MISTAKEN FOR A TYPICAL 15-YEAR-OLD RAVENWOOD HIGH SCHOOL FRESHMAN. She’s cute, athletic, feisty and loaded with energy, just like her cheerleader friends. What sets her apart is that she’s a starting linebacker for her freshman football team. So does her attitude and determination to defeat her B-cell lymphoma cancer diagnosis. “I believe everything happens for a reason,” Macy told Brentwood Lifestyle after recovering from her first treatment for cancer in early December. “I try and keep a positive attitude regardless of the circumstances, and fighting cancer is no different. Like a football game, you’ve got to prepare for battle and leave everything you have on the field for four quarters.” Macy’s mom and dad, Stacy and Ryan Fowler, know all about their oldest daughter’s stubborn determination. “She takes the time to do things right and pays attention to details,” explains Ryan. “Those lessons and her fighting spirit are important in any endeavor.” Exactly how does a teenage girl find the will and skill to excel in a male-dominated sport? Having a dad who played professional football doesn’t hurt. After a standout career at Duke University, Ryan spent five years in the NFL, including stints with the Dallas Cowboys and Tennessee Titans. Following in her dad’s footsteps, Macy began her gridiron career in the fifth grade with the Brentwood Blaze. Except for one season, she’s played either tight end, guard and linebacker each year. She began this season as a starting linebacker for the Ravenwood Freshman football team until back pain led doctors to discover the cause. “Macy’s tough as nails; tougher than you and me,” explains Ryan. “She complained of a minor thumb injury before we found out the bone was broken in half. That injury didn’t bother her at all. Then she started complaining of back pain. When she woke us up in the middle of the night, and I suggested a trip to the ER, she didn’t object. That’s when I knew my girl was hurting.” Initial tests in late September were inconclusive. It took weeks before a team of doctors settled on her diagnosis. That’s when the family switched their focus from training to defeat another football team to whipping the enemy invading her athletic frame. Few experiences at any stage of life prepare people for a cancer diagnosis. When teenagers come face-to-face with friends dealing with significant medical complications, often, they don’t know how to respond. Macy announced her news to friends on social media, not knowing how they would react. The outpouring of love and support is nothing short of overwhelming. 36

HOW END SLAVERY TENNESSEE IS HELPING HUMAN TRAFFICKING VICTIMS HEAL IN THE UNITED STATES, IT’S HARD FOR PEOPLE TO GRASP THAT WOMEN, MEN AND CHILDREN, MANY OF WHOM ARE U.S. CITIZENS, ARE STILL BEING SOLD INTO SLAVERY. Human trafficking happens everywhere, and the people impacted by this heinous crime are often unseen and unheard. Here in Tennessee, there is an organization helping these victims transform themselves into survivors. Once victims are identified by law enforcement, hospitals, mental health co-ops, or addiction services, to name a few, End Slavery Tennessee representatives step in to provide them first with basic needs. These victims are in great need of things such as housing, food, clothing, and then counseling, addiction services and educational assistance. 52

“No two survivors are the same,” says End Slavery Tennessee CEO Margie Quin. “Some of the women, and men and boys, have suffered extreme nutritional deprivation and sleep deprivation and they come in with some really significant medical issues, so we address those needs.” Many also need addiction counseling as well as complex trauma counseling. Margie understands human trafficking in all its manifestations. As a former assistant special agent with the Tennessee Bureau of Investigation (TBI), she’s seen its many horrors in her 26-year career. “I worked on trafficking for 11 to 12 years, and had supervised the firstever statewide trafficking unit with TBI,” she says.

From burgers to even a decadent low-calorie dessert, these healthy recipes, and others like them, will trigger your journey toward shedding those pounds for good, or just eating healthier and feeling better. If you feel overwhelmed by all the conflicting nutrition and diet advice out there, you’re not alone. Healthy eating doesn’t have to be overly complicated. It seems that for every expert who tells you a certain food is good for you, you’ll find another saying exactly the opposite. The truth is while some foods have been shown to have a beneficial effect on mood, it’s your overall diet that’s most important. The cornerstone of a healthy diet should be to replace processed food with real food whenever possible.
ASIAN CHICKEN BURGERS
+ Nonstick cooking spray + 1 small carrot + 1 small red onion, halved + 1 pound ground chicken + 1/4 cup panko (Japanese breadcrumbs)
+ 1/4 cup hoisin sauce + 1 tablespoon grated peeled ginger
+ 4 teaspoons low-sodium
+ 3 teaspoons hot Asian chili sauce, such as sambal oelek
+ 8 ounces white mushrooms, thinly sliced
+ 2 teaspoons toasted sesame oil
+ Juice of 1 lime + 4 whole-wheat sesame hamburger buns
soy sauce Preheat the oven to 375 degrees F. Mist a baking sheet with cooking spray. Grate the carrot and 1/2 onion into a large bowl. Add the chicken, panko, 2 tablespoons hoisin sauce, the ginger, 3 teaspoons soy sauce and 1 teaspoon sambal oelek and mix until combined. Shape the chicken mixture into four patties and place on the prepared baking sheet. Bake until cooked through, about 20 minutes. Meanwhile, thinly slice the remaining 1/2 onion. Toss with the mushrooms, sesame oil, lime juice and the remaining 1 teaspoon soy sauce in a bowl. Mix the remaining 2 tablespoons hoisin sauce and 2 teaspoons sambal oelek with 1 tablespoon water in another bowl. Warm the hamburger buns in the oven. Serve the burgers on the buns with a drizzle of the hoisin-sambal sauce and some of the mushroom mixture. 70

GRAPEFRUIT CUCUMBER FIZZ MAKES 2 COCKTAILS
THE GOODS + Ice
+ 4 ounces cucumber-basil infused gin (see right) + 1 cup fresh pink grapefruit juice + 1 cup ginger beer + 3 tablespoons basil cut into ribbons + Fresh grapefruit wedges + Fresh cucumber slices
HOW TO
01 Add a half cup of cucumber slices and 2 tablespoons of basil ribbons to 1 cup of gin.
02 Refrigerate overnight. 03 Strain the gin and reserve 4 ounces. 04 Divide ice between two tall glasses. 05 Add gin and divide the grapefruit juice between glasses. 06 Top with ginger beer and garnish with grapefruit wedges, cucumber slices and thinly sliced basil ribbons. 07 Enjoy. Cheers!

Their concept is low-impact for all fitness levels, and coaches will make modifications depending on members’ specific needs and fitness goals. Now they have found an effective ways for their members to stay accountable. The Eat The Frog app provides class schedules, social media platforms, fitness goals and in-club challenges. Their app also allows users to link many of the popular fitness tracking devices and fitness apps on the market. It is an online fitness community through which participants can share goals and progress. “One of the best things about the Frog app is the accountability,” says Sarah Kinman, personal trainer at Eat the Frog. “We are like that little voice in your head. We’ll text you about your workouts. We recommend you come to our classes three times a week. We coach through the app and give you tips on what you’re doing wrong. We have our clients type in everything they eat in a day and then we give them feedback on changes they can make.” Once a week, Eat the Frog gives an InBody Scan. The InBody quickly measures fat mass, muscle mass and body water levels. No dunking. No pinching. No discomfort. Simply stand on the device and hold the hand electrodes. This information is then stored to Lookin’Body Web, InBody’s cloud database management system. Trainers then view and manage clients’ results anytime, anywhere. “It breaks down everything,” says Sarah. “It will keep track of your weight, whether your muscle mass has grown and what that weighs. Weight is so much more than a number. Muscle weighs more that fat so this machine can give you that break down. It will tell you if you’re dehydrated, which most of us are.”
