from red, irritated eyes," he adds. He says recent discoveries reveal that dry eye disease is a form of blepharitis, a chronic inflammatory condition caused by a bacterial biofilm that accumulates on everyone's eyelids to some degree. If this biofilm can be eliminated, the glands that make tears can recover and symptoms can be eliminated. Dr. Rynerson, the developer of this new treatment protocol, lectures around the world to teach doctors how to fix dry eye disease by performing a BlephEx procedure, followed by the new Alcon ILux procedure. FOOD & WINE (CONTINUED)
“We knew importers with extensive Italian wine lists in America, for example, but they weren’t physically located in Nashville. Getting Italian wines during the pandemic from warehouses in New Jersey, New York and California became tricky,” he adds. “Local distributors eventually embraced the idea of securing more rare, controlled wines for us.” Next, Tony and his team worked on securing other genuine products direct from Italy, such as ParmigianoReggiano. “All the effort paid off in getting the right ingredients into Nashville, because diners really enjoy the in-house pastas we make. We’re just being ourselves, preparing food like they would in Rome, not trying to conform to any other types of menus, and people seem to appreciate that,” he says. One of Yolan’s most popular dishes, Tony says, is a breaded veal chop, the Cotoletta alla Milanese. He says the run-away success ingredient, however, is white truffles from Northern Italy. “They are incredibly rare, found in the wild and can’t be replicated. Their aroma and flavor are intoxicating, and we sell out quickly when we have them.” (Inside tip: White trufChef Tony Mantuano and Cathy Mantuano, food and beverage partners of The Joseph, a Luxury Collection Hotel, Nashville / Photo by Haas & Haas Photography
fles are due to be received at Yolan starting in October and only run through December.) Tony’s recommendation for autumn-themed palate cravings? Squash and pumpkin filled ravioli with sage brown butter sauce. Tony’s introduction to the passion of food began with his grandparents, immigrants from Italy who opened a food shop and store that he says became the gathering spot for the Italian-American community. He went on to receive 12 nominations from The James Beard Foundation, winning Best Chef Midwest in 2005. With Cathy, Tony co-authored the cookbook, Wine Bar Food, a celebration of the Mediterranean. At home, he says they prepare uncomplicated “food for the soul with incredible flavors.” Tony assures they definitely have another book or two marinating, all seasoned with abundant culinary love. “We’re also considering opening a retail/wholesale grocery store in Nashville to fill the void of authentic

WHO DOESN’T LOVE DOUGHNUTS, ESPECIALLY WHEN EACH WARM BITE IS LOADED WITH A GROOVY BURST OF FLAVOR? Peace Love and Little Donuts, founded in Pittsburgh in a tiny 209-square-foot shop in 2008, has expanded its locations across the country. Lucky for local residents, one opened in Brentwood in 2020. “Cheston [Williams] went on a business trip to Pittsburgh, and while in the Strip District, saw a sign for Maple Bacon Donuts,” says his wife and co-owner, Becky Williams. “He went into the shop, which happened to be the original Peace Love and Little Donuts, and he liked it so much, he took me to Pittsburgh to visit it. We weren’t looking to open a business, but we both liked it and thought it would be a great fit for Williamson County.” Becky describes the shop, with its retro 70s décor, as vibrant and energizing. It’s a great place for delicious and shareable doughnut experiences.

“I have had the opportunity to travel abroad to many different and amazing countries for modeling, been featured in countless magazines and advertisements, walked across the stage at Miss USA. Now I’m enjoying my passion of creating beauty daily at my salon in downtown Franklin. My smile, whether meeting a new client or posing for a picture, is always noticed and commented upon. Each and every time I’m asked, I recommend Dr. Kemp!”

After completing her role within the Miss USA pageant, Kristen continues to model. She also has become one of the industry’s most successful hair and makeup artists. In 2013 Kristen took charge of a small team that worked backstage doing hair and makeup at Paris Fashion Week. In addition to helping shape the designer’s vision and leading the team toward that goal, Kristen accepted the coveted role of modeling the finale dress to close the show, one of her long held dreams.

of the year that Tennessee weather makes it challenging or impossible to play golf outdoors. Michael says they particularly are “a club of clubs” in that their convenient location sits among seven country clubs so they provide a central spot for business and community leaders to meet and connect with each other. Taking part in the Sanctuary’s state-of-the-art environment also involves first-rate membership service, as well as great meals and cocktails. PGA professional Sean Wells joined the Sanctuary as director of golf to lead groups through wonderful endeavors. Additionally, Executive Chef Joey Ray was hired as the facility’s director of food and beverage to operate the commercial kitchen, sprinkling in his Napa Valley- and New York-curated practices. They can handle up to 27 golfers at a time and up to 99 total guests, including dietary restrictions. They also plan to host special events, such as wine, tequila or bourbon tastings. To that end, the facility offers a mobile app that enables members to reserve bays, select refreshments and request other details, all before arriving. During October and November, the Sanctuary team is assembling a membership wait list. One doesn’t have to be a good golfer to enjoy the experience, they assure. Billy says guests can participate in a laidback, private and non-intimidating suite in which no one is looking, judging or waiting behind for their turn as additional golfers on a course. In fact, golfers of all skill levels and guests of all ages are welcome. “We’re proud of the social, stress-free environment we’re creating. We’re a ‘yes’ type of membership model, a place to get relief from making decisions all day long. It’s about golf in some ways, but it’s not all about golf in others. We believe conversations around meals are different, and conversations around golf are different. And, we agree that family time is precious,” Billy assures. Michael adds, “We want everyone who comes to the Sanctuary to feel like they’re getting a warm hug from an old friend.” info@mygolfsanctuary.com MyGolfSanctuary.com

KITCHEN TRENDS (CONTINUED) “People are now gravitating to waterfall islands, which is where the quartz wraps all the way around the sides,” says Gabrielle. “Many of these islands also have cabinetry for storage, which is a big asset in any kitchen. And one-level islands are in, whereas tiered islands are out.” Other popular choices in the kitchen include pull-out drawers for pots and pans, as well as appliances garages. “These garages can hide your coffee maker or blender behind your cabinetry, and many times the outlet is right there, so you never have to take them out,” she says. This way, appliances are not visible or taking up space on countertops. Light fixtures also underwent a drastic change. “We’re moving away from a lot of the heavier fixtures and using more that you can see through, such as smaller pendants with glass features,” says Gabrielle. People are always surprised, she adds, how much bigger their kitchens look when they take out these bulky fixtures. It’s the same thing with pot racks. “We used to see those a lot more, but when you take them down your kitchen looks much more open.”

TIONAL COMMUNITY IN SOUTH NASHVILLE THROUGH CUISINE, ART AND ENTERTAINMENT. “We’re proud to showcase local, immigrant-owned and family-owned businesses,” says this Brentwood area native who attended Ravenwood High School. With family roots in Yemen, Anas’ father and two uncles purchased a Hispanic supermarket in Nashville, just before he says the local Latino population grew exponentially. He then became familiar with Nashville’s “International Corridor” off of Nolensville Road. While attending Belmont University, he served as an Airbnb experience host to share this culturally rich part of Nashville with locals and visitors. Brentwood Lifestyle enjoyed securing some of Anas’ recommendations of distinctly creative eateries to try.

SOY CUBANO — Cuban pop-up with a regular schedule. Twists on true Latin cuisine keeps Anas returning for more. He says each dish is a must try, and that they all pack flavor. For example, they combine the magic of Mojo pork with crispy Cuban bread, ham and melty Swiss cheese to get one satisfying sanguish (sandwich). Or try a Cuban Jerk dinner.

This mother-daughter duo shares Taiwanese family dumpling recipes with the Nashville community.
Anas says their dumplings are super special. They also serve salted crispy chicken, scallion pancakes,
marinated cucumbers, and hot and sour soup. Don’t
forget to try Mama Yang’s Specialty Sauce on their dumplings and other delicious recipes!
SLOW BURN HOT CHICKEN — Barbecue fast food, even brunch.
They prepare hot spicy chicken at several heat levels.
Anas says it’s nice that they offer both fried and grilled options; he suggests consider ordering ahead. They also serve hot fish, shrimp, smoked chicken, fried pork, waffles and Hot Butt Sandwiches.
CAFÉ RAKKA — Live fresh, eat fresh, refreshing difference.
This family-oriented café serves Mediterranean food
with olive oil and no MSG. Anas likes its emphasis on natural, healthy eating. Everything is made fresh in-house, including yogurt and cheeses, using family recipes perfected for generations in the upper Euphrates region. Even the hummus is made fresh daily.

T r avel R ecom mend at ion s for Food ies “Slovenia borders Italy and Croatia, which is to say there are a lot of shared values in and around food; they have really great cheese, dairy, beef, pasta, but very few tourists, hardly any. So if you love Italy, that kind of specific travel and food experience, particularly Northern Italy, because you can see the Alps from where they are. It’s picture perfect, a beautiful place, and also where orange wine is from.” Dennis also highly recommends Costa Rica, Hawaii and Finland. “Most people love the idea of travel, but we tend to pick the same places when we travel, and there is nothing wrong with that, they are amazing for a reason, but when you get off the beaten path a little bit, you learn the difference between vacation and travel.” In addition to travels, Dennis is a huge advocate for supporting local businesses and the connection grilling in your own backyard can make. “Grilling is inherently communal. You talk to your neighbors, they smell it, they ask you what you’re cooking; the whole act of it is a community. One of the most common fears Dennis hears from people cooking and/or grilling at home is, ‘where do I start?’ Dennis recommends cooking the things that bring you joy — things that are on a restaurant menu you can’t NOT order because you’re so pumped that those dishes are on there. “Find the things that you love. Take the stress out of food. Feed people because all they really care about is spending time with you. Bring joy back into the kitchen.” CityLifestyle.com/Brentwood

DIRECTIONS Mix all ingredients together and add a cinnamon stick. This is the drink that is ready to send you off into the fall. Don’t misunderstand, though. The lemon juice still keeps that summer flavor in. But the sweet honey flavor, the cinnamon spice that will come with it, and the inevitable orange color that comes with it will signify that October is here and we have reached the heart of college football season.
