Why Choose The Damon Smith Team? Because Experience Matters... After spending the last 18 years in California my wife and I decided it was time to find our “forever” home in Brentwood. We had no one in Nashville to lean on, so we needed a lot of advice from someone who really knew the area. We were so fortunate to be transferred to Damon’s Team when cold calling to view a property. After a couple of conversations to calibrate expectations, we set up time to view properties. When they picked me up they had a full day planned with agenda, maps, brochures, listings, etc. After the third viewing we saw all we needed to see, because they knew exactly what we were looking for. We made an offer on one of the three homes the first afternoon after a lunch with Scott and Sulinda to discuss the offer strategy. That was only the beginning of the services they offer and more important...the relationship. They have made the whole process seamless, simple and stress free. A month after close they are still present for us and I suspect always will be for they have now become “our new best friends”. - Tony M

DOG PARK DEDICATED IN HONOR OF BRENTWOOD RESIDENT Brentwood’s Barkwood Dog Park was dedicated in memory of beloved Brentwood resident, Peggy Sain Howell, who earned the nickname of Brentwood’s Top Citizen through her participation in many civic opportunities, such as the Brentwood Citizen Fire and Police Academies. Peggy also served on the Citizens for Brentwood Green Space board, graduated with Leadership Brentwood’s Class of 2003 and served as Country Club Estates HOA secretary/treasurer for almost 30 years. Called Miss Peggy’s Bark Park, it’s located at Tower Park off Heritage Way. There is a small and large dog area. Visitors to the park are greeted by the sign featuring Peggy’s beloved basset hound. Truman was the star of the 2013 “Where’s Truman?” campaign as part of the nonprofit Citizens for Brentwood Green Space spotlight on Brentwood parks. It was the Citizens for Brentwood Green Space that recommended the dog park be renamed in Peggy’s honor in 2020.

WHAT HAPPENS WHEN A TOUR PRODUCTION MANAGER AND CELEBRITY HAIR STYLIST SUDDENLY FIND THEMSELVES UNEMPLOYED? They started baking sourdough cinnamon rolls.
ARTICLE PAUL STANLEY PHOTOGRAPHY CHRISSY NIX PHOTOGRAPHY
Christin and Zito were living creative lives. She, as a hair and makeup professional for A-list celebrities. Zito (who exclusively uses only his last name) as a tour production manager for musical artists and shows working 300 plus days a year. Then came the shutdown. “I was on the road with Steve Aoki when the call came to a head home,” says Zito. “Our crew loaded the trucks in Cleveland on March 12, en route to Chicago. I had no idea it would be the last show of 2020. Touring was my life for the previous 21 years, so spending more than a couple of days at home seemed strange.” Christin had been equally busy. However, absent Music City’s red-carpet events, music video and commercial shoots, her work also abruptly ended. For busy professionals with little time for hobbies, both wanted to find or renew outside interests. The result is Rock N Rollz Nashville. “I’ve always been into cooking, Zito into baking, especially sourdough bread,” explains Christin. “One day Zito decided to make some sourdough cinnamon rolls and thought, ‘dang, these are great.’” The couple figured by working in their home kitchen, they could make extra “grocery money” by selling the sweet sourdough concoction to neighbors. The demand for their tasty rolls soon stretched the limits of their home kitchen, so they purchased a commercial-grade oven. Once they realized even the best home mixer couldn’t meet the new demand, finding a commercial baking space became a priority. “Fitting a 200-pound, commercial mixer into your home kitchen isn’t easy,” Zito emphasizes. “That’s when we realized we needed a commercial kitchen space and found a fantastic location at Citizen Kitchens.” “We work in creative professions alongside creative people. Zito and I want to encourage people who’re struggling during the pandemic to move forward and pursue things,” Christin says. “Don’t give up. Find something else to pour your passion into.” Rock N Rollz donates 50 cents of every $5 cinnamon roll sale to MusiCares, a Nashville nonprofit that helps those in the music industry who need financial, social and medical assistance. Through early November, more than $18,000 from the sale of Rock N Rollz tasty rolls has gone to MusiCares. “Hundreds of touring musical artists, along with even more people ranging from musicians, to sound and lighting professionals, merchandisers, to part-time venue employees are suffering financially without tour work,” Zito passionately notes. “That’s how the concept of ‘buy a roll, help a roadie,’ began. When we needed help, we hired former roadies. When we want to give up, we can’t, because too many people need our help.” Rock N Rollz sells individual sourdough cinnamon rolls for $5 each. A “Z-Pac,” or six bake-at-home rolls, is available for $27. The rolls must be pre-ordered online each Wednesday by 5 p.m. CST. Delivery is by pick-up only on Saturdays and Sundays at East Nashville, Richland Farmers Market, Franklin, Mount Juliet and pop-up locations announced online. “Lots of people are waiting for their normal life to return,” adds Christin. “Until then, we encourage everyone to find happiness and help others. That’s what Zito and I did, and we’re loving every minute of the experience.” CityLifestyle.com/Brentwood

PLANS
HAVE
BEEN
COMPROMISED IN 2020 BY THE CORONAVIRUS PANDEMIC. There’s no reason to relegate travel mem-
ories to your backyard this year because there’s an easy solution for Middle Tennesseans suffering from cabin fever. Book a Holiday Staycation at Nashville’s Hermitage Hotel. Native Nashvillians fondly remember The Hermitage Hotel, undoubtedly one of Nashville’s most prominent downtown landmarks. The hotel’s history is as colorful as the hotel’s grand lobby. In 1908, some of the nation’s most talented craftsmen – led by James Carpenter – began creating the hotel’s unique architecture in the heart of downtown Nashville. Merging classical Italian with the famous French Renaissance style, the hotel quickly earned the reputation as one of the South’s classic, timeless treasures. The $1 million project was initially financed by local Nashvillians and the Board of Trade through raising $300,000 by selling stock. When the 10-story structure opened in late summer of 1910, features, such as mahogany paneling, running ice water, telephones, and private baths, were in each guest room. On opening day, room rates started at a pricey $2, guaranteed to be “fireproof, noise proof and dustproof.” Soon the phrase, “Meet me at The Hermitage Hotel,” was spoken by business leaders, politicians and socialites having tea in the hotel’s magnificent grand lobby. Many back-room political and business deals have taken place in the hotel’s gorgeous rooms, lobby or downstairs Oak Bar. “The grand dame,” as the hotel was affectionately named, quickly attracted elite personalities from business, politics, entertainment, especially those coming through Nashville in the golden age of country music. Several governors stayed at The Hermitage prior to their inaugurations, which is only a few hundred yards from Tennessee’s State Capitol. Presidents Taft, Wilson, Nixon, Kennedy, Johnson, Carter, Clinton, and Bush have either visited or stayed at the hotel. Because Nashville has such a rich musical heritage, the list of who from the entertainment world that have graced the hotel’s doors includes Hank Williams, Patsy Cline and Johnny Cash. However, the property’s most famous guests might be the renowned pool shark, Minnesota Fats, who made the hotel his home for more than six years. The hotel’s most significant, and least recognized achievement helped pave the way for the 19th amendment. Known as the suffrage movement, the hotel served as the headquarters for various groups seeking to influence the vote. Because Tennessee produced the final vote to ratify the amendment, the hotel even serves a signature cocktail to commemorate the victory. After undergoing extensive renovations through the years, today the hotel features 112 guest rooms, three executive suites, seven junior suites, and a presidential suite—all with exquisite marble bathrooms. Each room features complimentary Wi-Fi, plush robes, nightly turndown service, and luxury bedding.

When entering the property through Sixth Avenue’s main doors, a marble staircase ushers guests into the main lobby. To the right is the check-in desk, but before going to your room, take time to relax in one of the lobby’s many sitting areas or at a table on the mezzanine level. The Hermitage lobby is ideal for people-watching, and one never knows what celebrity might walk through the hotel’s double doors. While the lobby’s breath-taking architecture will make you think you’re traveling back in time to the nation’s golden era, the hotel and basement offer visitors a glimpse of Nashville’s past, present and future. If you walk back down the lobby steps toward the main entrance, you’ll find another staircase that takes you below. It’s here you’ll find the Capitol Grille, the Oak Bar, and one of the world’s most famous men’s restrooms. Throughout the hotel’s 110-year history, the Capitol Grille restaurant has featured some of the South’s finest cuisine. Serving breakfast, lunch, and dinner, Executive Chef Derek Brooks combines innovative techniques with the region’s freshest produce and ingredients for a luxury farm-to-table experience. Adjacent to the award-winning restaurant is the most historic watering hole in Nashville, if not the entire southeast. The Oak Bar was initially opened as a private gentleman’s club in 1910. The bar’s reputation further expanded during the Prohibition years when teapots were filled with bourbon. Today, the dark, wood-paneled room features 200-plus bottles of bourbon. When the legislature is in session, you’ll often find lobbyists, staffers, and legislators continuing the day’s policy discussions. If the hotel’s glorious history and fine dining and drinking aren’t enough, the art-deco men’s room located next to the bar is a must-see, even for the ladies. It isn’t often that a restroom is famous for its design and color-scheme. Inside you’ll find gleaming lime green and black tiles, terrazzo flooring, and a shoe-shine station. Ladies, just tell one of the servers or hotel associates you would like to visit the “men’s room,” and they’ll make certain the coast is clear for your visit. While there’s plenty to do inside the hotel, Nashville offers tons of downtown restaurants, music halls, museums, and historic sites once you step beyond the lobby doors. 40
Brentwood Lifestyle | December 2020
Across the street is the Tennessee Performing Arts Center, which hosts stage and musical performances. Just a short walk or ride and you’re looking at the historic Ryman Auditorium. Only steps away is the area known as “lower Broadway,” where you’ll find Robert’s, Tootsies, and numerous music venues. Some are owned by famous music celebrities such as John Rich, Kidd Rock, and Dierks Bentley. There’s no better time to book a “Staycation” at Nashville’s Hermitage Hotel than during the holiday season. The hotel is offering several holiday specials, from Christmas Eve and day seating in The Capitol Grille, to-go meals, and a Nutcracker-themed signature tea series. The decorations, ambiance, and luxury features will provide decades of memories for you and your family. To find the perfect package for your family’s needs, check the hotel website for specials and availability. Note: Certain health mandates may be in place during this time, so it’s a good idea to check with the hotel concierge or specific venues to confirm operating hours and serving limitations. The property was placed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1975, and earlier this year, awarded the 2020 Historic Hotel of the Year.

DRESSES FOR HOLIDAY CELEBRATIONS THIS YEAR, RENT A WHOLE WARDROBE FROM THE SHOWROOM INSTEAD. They have a collection of designer dresses, outfits and accessories for holiday parties, New Year’s celebrations or winter weddings. “The advantage of renting, besides being more cost efficient, is that people like to be able to wear something new every time they go to an event,” says owner Kristin Geyser. Now open for over five years, The Showroom carries many well-known labels such as Jessica Angel, Bariano Australia, and Jovani, as well as their own private label, Ruby & Pearl. While purchasing these brands may not be in most people’s budgets, renting them provides a more reasonable alternative. Even those customers who are able to afford them, such as Reba McEntire and Martina McBride, love the ability to constantly change up their outfits for the stage or photo shoots. Before moving to Nashville from Los Angeles in 2013, Kristin worked as a stylist in the entertainment industry. “When I started styling people here, I had a hard time finding the right clothing, so I was ordering everything from NY and LA or from my mother’s store in Texas, that I co-owned with her,” she says. “That’s why I decided to open up my own place.” For the holidays, Kristin has dresses, jumpsuits and pantsuits in festive reds and greens, and vintage and faux furs to add even more pizzazz. There are great accessories too, like big sparkly earrings and beaded evening bags. Some customers come in just for these fabulous additions. “They want to make something in their closet work, so they change it up and rent 44

accessories like a belt,” she says. “If they don’t want to get a whole outfit, they can rent a great pair of earrings or a cute bag.” Besides glitzy and glamorous outfits for big fancy parties, Kristin also offers clothing for smaller, less formal gatherings, such as house or work parties. “It’s a little different this year because of COVID and a lot of celebrations may be toned down a bit, so I’ve changed it up to have more casual options.” She and the store manager, Lauren Lettow, work as a team to assist customers. “Lauren is very creative and is great at styling,” says Kristin. “We find out what event you’re going to, what the invitation says, and then we help you choose what’s appropriate. We find that a lot of people actually do need and want help, while others like to be left on their own.” Most rentals are for five to seven days, but can be extended. And, if someone absolutely falls in love with a dress and can’t bear to give it back, there’s an option to buy. The cost of the rental is then deducted from the retail cost. Unlike most other rental shops, alterations can be made, and the store has a seamstress to ensure that the fit is just right. All clothing is dry cleaned between rentals, and jewelry and other accessories are sanitized between wears as well. “We make sure everything that’s on our floor

looks perfect and brand new,” she says.

is very girly, says Kristin. “We have sequins and florals and colors and I would say it’s happy and bright when you walk in. It really sparkles.” “We feel that finding the right dress shouldn’t be stressful, so we try to make it easy and fun,” she says. This includes always having champagne for shoppers. Fun indeed! That’s precisely what happened to Lauren and Ryan Tannehill. The only difference is that instead of plying his trade in a downtown office building, this new hire’s role was to implement the air and ground assault strategy for the Tennessee Titans offense. “I had no idea Ryan would be traded to the Titans, but I had told him previously I believed we would someday live in Nashville,” Lauren told Brentwood Lifestyle. “God had a plan for us to be here and we absolutely love it.” Nashville’s newest power couple are both native Texans. Ryan grew up in the plains of West Texas, just outside of Lubbock. An exceptional athlete, he excelled at multiple sports in high school. After considering scholarship offers from several Texas programs, he chose to continue his education and football career at Texas A&M.
58
Brentwood Lifestyle | December 2020
Because of his athletic prowess, Ryan also played receiver during the first portion of his college career. His speed and hands proved valuable to the Aggies offense, with the 6-foot 4-inch receiver finishing the 2009 season with a team-leading 46 receptions for 609 yards and four touchdowns. However, Ryan was determined to somehow return to his old position. He got his shot mid-way through the 2010 season by leading the Aggies to a victory over Texas Tech and never looked back. Success on the gridiron wasn’t the only success Ryan had at college. While on a spring break trip to Panama City in 2009, he met a gorgeous A&M co-ed that would become his wife one day. “We had so much in common and immediately formed a connection,” explains Lauren. “Our love for God and His plans for us is something we talked at length about. Although we both attended A&M together until that spring break trip, we had never met.” To put it mildly, 2012 was a massive year for the young quarterback. Not only did the Miami Dolphins select him in the first round of the NFL draft, he and Lauren married. After settling in Miami, they focused on his career and starting a family. Their son, Steel, is now 4 years old, and daughter, Stella, is 2. Fast forward to 2019 and that’s when the Tannehills moved to Nashville, with Ryan spending the first few games as the Titan’s backup quarterback. In the second half of the sixth game, Ryan’s number was called to take the reins. Although some NFL analysts thought his best playing days had passed, Ryan ended the season by posting such impressive stats that he was named the NFL’s Comeback Player of the Year and participated in his first Pro Bowl. All these accomplishments mean many 12-hour plus days for Ryan, yet he enjoys quality time with his family while exploring all that Middle Tennessee offers.

LIKE A KID IN A CANDY STORE SATISFYING THAT SWEET TOOTH AND SO MUCH MORE
WHEN BROOKE O’DELL DECIDED TO LEAVE HER JOB AT COUNTRY MUSIC TELEVISION IN 2006 TO SPEND MORE TIME WITH HER CHILDREN, SHE BEGAN LOOKING FOR A NEW CAREER WITH VERY FLEXIBLE HOURS. Because she enjoyed baking and loved the artistic aspect of cake decorating, she focused on learning how to improve her skills. Soon after, she was making cakes for Ringo Starr, Willie Nelson and a host of other well-known personalities. She also was named Best Kids’ Birthday Cake Baker in 2008 by Nashville Scene magazine. In 2017, Brooke decided to expand her horizons, and bought the Sugar Drop Café and Dessert Boutique, which has been in Brentwood for more than 50 years. She completely remodeled it and added her own special touch. Due to its great success, Sugar Drop has now moved into an even bigger and better location. “It’s brand new, so anything I could dream up, we were able to bring to reality with our amazing interior designer,” says Brooke. Inside, customers will find themselves standing on a hand-poured glitter floor with a giant whimsical glass candy chandelier overhead. The beautiful party room, which can seat up to 20 people, is enclosed in glass walls that are covered with papier-mâché desserts. In the café area, customers can enjoy a delicious mug of gourmet hot cocoa complete with homemade marshmallows and a Puffle, a confection of cotton candy covered in chocolate. In-between sips, they can decorate a cookie from one of the incredible cookie kits that ARTICLE SUE BALDANI PHOTOGRAPHY HOUSEHOLD PHOTOGRAPHY
