FOR MANY OF US, AUGUST IS A BITTERSWEET TURNING POINT IN THE CALENDAR YEAR. Summer freedom is drawing to a close, and the school bells will be ringing any day now. While the lazy days of sipping cool beverages poolside may be numbered, this month brings a sense of renewal. New routines, new clothes and new school supplies often come to mind in August. And because we dedicated an issue to both the men and women of our community earlier this year, it would only be right to celebrate some of our cutest residents: kids and pets! There’s no doubt we have some serious pet lovers in Brentwood. Meet a nonprofit (and their four-legged friends) and you’ll find what makes the bond between humans and animals so special on Page 30. We also made homemade dog treats on Page 32 so you can spoil your loyal companions. When’s the last time you planned a birthday party in a decked-out retro camper? On Page 26, we offer some tips for styling the most successful party tricks—kids included.

Cindy Hamilton is one such parent. Her son, Will, is one of the most dedicated ninjas. “My son loves Code Ninjas!” she says. “He has a positive experience each time and has found his ‘tribe’ of like-minded kids. The staff is terrific and really wants the kids to succeed.” Code Ninjas’ ongoing, year-round drop-in program offers flexibility to accommodate the unexpected twists and turns of busy schedules. There are three options: the Lite program, which offers four hours per month; the Standard program, which offers eight hours per month; and the Fast Track option of 12. Seasonal camps, including Minecraft, Roblox and app building, are also offered throughout the year. As for Evan, age 11, he is already close to earning his orange belt and evinces an undiminished passion for coding. “It really helps me express my wild side!” he exclaims, referring to how he has developed the skill to bring his vivid imagination’s characters to life on a computer. All his new friends would no doubt agree with the sentiment. Screen time just doesn’t get any better than this.

“He stays by your side and trusts you will lead him. At home, he has the house mapped out in his memory and gets around just as well as our other dogs!” However, other families, especially with young children, might be reluctant to adopt a pit bull. Ashley addresses these concerns. “Leo is our kids' best friend,” she says. “He loves being around them and always respects their space. Despite being big and sometimes clumsy, Leo is full of love and has been an even happier dog since we've added children to our family.” The Ryans have certainly led by example, and RARF exists to help others do the same. Pa r t y Planning Tips TIP 1 A camping theme requires getting a little farther out there in an outdoor space, whether it’s a large yard, park or actual campground. It’s best to have a “home base” for people to gather and to assist in staging/storing food and drinks. The Flying Ham rents hyper-adorable retro campers for parties of all types and, in addition to being spacious and functional, it sets the tone perfectly for this shindig. TIP 2 The roomy indoor space on the camper provides a great practical and storage space for the party and an extra relaxation zone for adults. Examples for an adult tea/cocktail party setup are available for viewing on The Flying Ham’s website. TIP 3 The gleefully cute teepees and spectacular decor shown here are provided by Let it B Love. Master decorator and children’s party visionary Jessi Van Zant styles handcrafted, fully customized events with her Nashville-based company. Besides, what kid doesn’t love a fort to play in? TIP 4 Adult twists on the children’s favorite food will appease all palates. Some great ideas are: 1. Hand-breaded chicken fingers with a variety of easy dipping sauces (ketchup, honey mustard, spicy aioli and boozy barbecue). These can be cooked ahead of time on a sheet tray, wrapped in foil and transported to the event. 2. Macaroni and cheese with choices to mix in on the side (salsa, peas, avocado, diced ham, bacon, hot dogs, diced jalapenos or creamy artichoke dip). Make the mac and cheese in a slow-cooker and once it’s done, simply unplug, cover, transport and re-plug in to keep it warm. 3. Pieces of cheese and charcuterie layered and skewered on a wooden craft stick. The kids can have fun pretending to cook them on the faux campfire! TIP 5 Can you call it camping without s’mores? Pre-skewer marshmallows on pretzel sticks, and use a brûlée torch to toast them for the little ones. They’re fun to eat as is, but have graham crackers and chocolate handy, just in case. And don’t forget the pack of wet wipes for sticky hands and faces! TIP 6 Take all the work out of a birthday cake and party favor sweets with Sugar Drop Cake, Party & Sweets Supply Shop. Featured in these photos, owner and award-winning cake artist Brooke O’Dell creates edible works of art out of her business in Brentwood. She has something for everyone and every occasion!

WHO SAYS BRENTWOOD DOESN’T HAVE A BEACH? Of course, we do! We just keep it in Destin, Florida, that’s all. But where to stay on your visit to our perfect peninsula with its sugar-white sand dunes, fresh sea breezes and emerald green waters? Well, that’s a Brentwood Beach no-brainer. It’s The Henderson, a Salamander Beach and Spa Resort, which was recently named one of “The South’s Best Resorts of 2019” by Southern Living. Brentwood Lifestyle can confirm that the accolade is highly deserved. The luxurious and immaculate rooms come with free Wi-Fi, flat-screen TVs and furnished balconies. Rooms with Gulf views and free-standing tubs—Brentwood Lifestyle personally recommends—are also available.

The Henderson can serve as the start and finish of a family bike tour with more than 18 miles of safe, paved trails to ride and, at the resort itself, there is an inviting, kid-friendly pool, a lazy river, a splash pad and an ice cream shop for cool snacks in between all the splashing. There are also structured activities for kids ages 4 through 12 with the Poppy’s Kids Club and Kid’s Night Out, allowing time for mom and dad to get away for a while and do their own thing. The kids’ activities change daily and include either lunch or dinner. Mondays, for example, have a mad scientist theme as kids don lab coats and perform fun, hands-on experiments. Wednesdays are all about pirates as kids

put on pirate garb and dig for buried treasure. Fridays are for superheroes as kids make their own masks. Without a doubt, the kids will have a blast and will want to fly back to this enchanted place as soon as possible. Mom and dad will love it, too. With its ideal location, private beach, fine dining, a world-class spa, fitness classes, attentive staff, decadently comfortable beds and inviting balconies overlooking paradise, the only downside to the visit will be having to leave. But while you’re there, make sure to check out the extraordinary breakfast buffet and definitely treat yourself to some private cabana time at the adults-only pool. In the evening, perhaps while the kids are dressed as pirates and eagerly digging for surprises buried in the clean, white sand, enjoy a cocktail and s'mores around the fire pit and make some new friends. It is, after all, Brentwood’s Beach at The Henderson, and there’s a good chance some of the friendly folks you meet will be your neighbors.

For the majority of my life, I have been missing out on the “fillings” of life. Literally. I would eat a cheeseburger, and my teeth would leave the lettuce and tomato behind. I would attempt to eat chicken wings, and let’s just say this was never a pretty sight for me. The issue I had was not that I didn’t want these foods; the issue I had was my teeth. My top four front teeth never quite met with my bottom four, causing me to talk with a slight lisp and miss out on the glorious condiments filling life. After 20 years
of being told that my teeth could only be fixed with jaw surgery, I learned to adapt. I learned to give the issue a rest and move on -- that is, until I was referred to Kemp and Rice Orthodontics. These doctors told me they could fix my teeth with braces. One year of clear brackets versus a painful jaw surgery was a simple choice! The best part was how simple everything was after that. They set me up with an appointment to place on my brackets and wires, everything was clear and nearly invisible, and they accepted my insurance.
It’s still amazing to me how simple they made the process. Now that I’m six months in with my braces, I’ve noticed a dramatic change. I am speaking better and with confidence, my smile has improved, and I can now take a bite of a cheeseburger and get the lettuce and tomatoes, too. Making the decision
to get braces as an adult is not easy. Thankfully, Dr. Kemp and Dr. Rice made that decision a simple one for me, and I can now enjoy the fillings of life!

DR. ELIZABETH BAKER, OWNER OF MARYLAND FARMS CHIROPRACTIC, BELIEVES MATERNITY LEAVES ARE UNNECESSARILY SHORT. So when her assistant, Melody Blackwell, had her daughter, Dr. Liz worked out creative solutions for all involved. "Melody's been a very valued employee of mine since 2013. She's a hard worker, and I wanted to show her I appreciate all that she's done to help the office grow," Dr. Liz says. "And I wanted to give her that very important early time with her baby."
