AMERICAN BATTLEFIELD TRUST HONORS LOCAL BATTLEFIELD PRESERVATION CHAMPION At its most recent annual gathering, American Battlefield Trust, a national nonprofit dedicated to preserving the nation's historic battlefields, honored Robert Hicks of Franklin with the Edwin C. Bearss Lifetime Achievement Award. As a New York Times bestselling author, Robert’s novels have brought national attention to the Franklin community and to the cause of battlefield preservation. When the future of the Franklin battlefield hung in the balance, Robert helped reinvigorate the preservation spirit through his 2005 co-founding of Franklin’s Charge, a broad-based coalition dedicated to recapturing Franklin’s Civil War leg-

After selecting your portion size—a regular bowl with 3 ounces of protein or a large with 5 ounces—choose your base: the white rice, the brown rice or, for those on the keto diet, the spring mix of greens. Next comes the protein. Would you like the fresh tuna from Japan or the fresh salmon from Scotland? Perhaps you would prefer the tender chunks of tofu or the perfectly seasoned sous vide chicken? You can’t go wrong, but you do need to choose because now it’s time to get your mix into the mix. Edamame or mango, carrots or cucumbers, tobiko or candy-striped beets—the list goes on, and the possibilities pile up. Now, to make your palate’s bell go "ding," pick your favorite sauce: sweet, savory, citrusy, spicy—your call. DOES THIS SOUND FAMILIAR? You drive past the same patch of place year after year after year. The spot never seems to alter. You can even close your eyes and picture it all perfectly. But then change happens. New buildings pop up. Perhaps old ones come down. Streets are widened. New stop lights appear. You drive by the same patch of place now, and its new look imprints itself upon your consciousness like some kind of instant mental tattoo. And, for the life of you, you just can’t remember how the old place used to look. All you can see is what appears in the present. Nashville is currently undergoing an epic of such reimaginings. But even we here in more development-controlled Brentwood are not immune to the challenges that change poses to our memories. Can you drive past the Walgreens at Old Hickory Boulevard and Franklin Road and still picture Noble’s Restaurant and the Travelers’ Rest Motel? Can you roll past Brentwood Middle School and conjure up the former scene of surrounding farms and fields before the construction of the park and the houses and Brentwood High? I can’t. And I went to “Northside." I went to BHS in year one. Therefore, a few words of appreciation for three local landmarks, three constructed constants that have withstood the test of time. Two have been repurposed, but, in each case, that has only made them better. One Brentwood landmark clearly towers above all the rest. Erected in 1932, the WSM Tower, once the tallest radio tower in the United States, began broadcasting the Grand Ole Opry from the get-go. With its 50,000-watt, transmitter the tower could—and still does—send its signal across almost all of North America. Plus, with its distinctive diamond shape and its proximity to Interstate 65, the WSM Tower still stands out among all the other towers around as the beacon of Brentwood. In just six years, Ravenswood Mansion will turn 200 years old, yet the house itself appears nearly the same since the days Sam Houston hung out there as best man for a wedding. But what makes Ravenswood truly a landmark is that it serves as the focal point for Smith Park, our 400-plus-acre oasis of nature and community. Few places in town have changed as much as Maryland Farms, its former forests, farms and fields now deeply submerged beneath an ocean of office buildings and parking lots. But one building from formerly bucolic Brentwood remains truly "stable:" the Horse Barn Office Building at 219 Ward Circle, expertly converted to fuse our past with our present. The Team Annie Rose Poker Run REVVING UP THE SAVING HORSEPOWER IN THE FIGHT AGAINST CANCER

BLOODBORNE CANCERS CONTINUE TO CLAIM LIVES. “But where the danger is,” a German poet of the Romantic era once wrote, “also grows the saving power.” And the saving power is certainly rising to the challenge on this front. In the early 1960s, leukemia patients had only a 10% chance at achieving remission. Now, thanks to the unremitting efforts of tens of thousands and to institutions like the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society, those numbers are reversed. Today, some 90% of patients diagnosed with a bloodborne cancer will achieve remission. It's much better, but it's still not good enough. The finish line is 100% remission. And that’s why Team Annie Rose Foundation has started its engines, rolling toward the checkered flag of bloodborne cancer’s final defeat. Founded in 2013, TARF is a Brentwood-based nonprofit that funds research into all blood cancers and provides support for patients and families here in Tennessee. Annie Rose, herself a survivor of acute lymphocytic leukemia. Along with her dad, Ross Robinson, a cardiovascular anesthesiologist, they came up with ways to raise funds and eventually struck upon the concept of a poker run, a sort of group-joy-ride-meetscasino-gaming for a worthy cause. Almost all the vehicles are driven by their owners, although dealerships will sponsor a few of their newest models as well. “When we started the foundation, we did a golf tournament," Ross says. "But then a friend told me about a poker run that was initially started by a motorcycle group. So I thought, 'Well, if you can do it with a group of motorcycles, then why can’t you do it with cars?'” Thus the Poker Run was born with this past May marking its sixth and biggest year. From its origins in 2013 when the event drew 28 cars and raised $3,500, this year’s Poker Run saw 105 vehicles participate and generated more than $54,000. Talk about rolling in the right direction. “The Poker Run is a blast,” assures Zach Durbin, a Brentwood Lifestyle photographer and a man who deeply appreciates a finely crafted sports car. “I got to tool around in a new 911 Carrera GTS with Mark Powers of Porsche of Nashville. I couldn’t believe I was getting paid to have so much fun!” Zach isn’t the only one who loves the event. The Poker Run has become so popular that TARF has to limit the number of participants in order to keep the event’s intimate vibe humming like a well-oiled machine. “The Poker Run has become really well-known in the car community and has reached critical mass. It’s gotten to the point that I have to turn people away,” Ross says. But while the number of participants is limited, there is still room to grow in terms of sponsorship. Much success has already been made here with wonderful local support. As for future plans, Ross is clear: “Now our challenge is to keep it fresh, to keep it fun, to increase the number of sponsors.” To help keep TARF’s Poker Run firing on all cylinders, email Ross at rvrobinson@me.com.
