OK, GENTLEMEN. You’ve waited patiently for your turn. Last month, we brought you our Ladies issue—it is ladies first, after all—and this month, we present our “Gents” issue, celebrating all things masculine. Of course, there’s Father’s Day on June 16, but there are so many more reasons why it’s great to be a guy this month. With the summer season underway, the long, sunny days can be filled with backyard cookouts, baseball games, camping trips, fishing excursions and so much more. I admire the way he carries himself—his humility and his intense competitive drive and perseverance.” But Dr. Hommonay has some competitive drive and perseverance of his own. How else to explain his successful balancing of 40-plus hours of athletics during high school and college with full-time course loads? “The key for me was prioritizing the most important things first,” he recalls. “I decided I would not let either aspect of my life suffer; however, a healthy balance is extremely important.” In town since his years at Brentwood High—he helped the soccer team win state—Dr. Hommonay continues to stay involved with the high school and community sports leagues. “I enjoy playing some pickup leagues around town,” he says, “but most of my sports life now consists of coaching, spectating and sponsoring.” As for the deeper meaning of sports itself, the dentist waxes philosophical. “Sports are an interesting tool in human development,” he says. “I found that it taught me many vital attributes that are instilled in me today: camaraderie, working with others on a common goal, putting the team and others before myself. Athletics helped me develop strong characteristics such as perseverance, hard work and discipline.” Even defeat can be a learning experience. “The one thing I will never forget is the feeling of defeat,” he shares. “There have been times in my life when I was told I could not accomplish a goal. It was that feeling of defeat that gave me the drive to continue to achieve my goals.” 26

Having been a designer for California Closets for 13 years and with an extensive background in design, Mindy and fellow designer Jeni Burnside, along with Tim who handles the flooring components and the day-to-day business operations, can help bring people’s ideas to fruition. They use 3D design software to show clients a rendering of what the space will look like upon completion, and once approved, their in-house employees handle all the installations. While they can design any room in a house, one of their popular services is turning garages into man caves. Tailored Living utilizes this extra room in the house to design masculine spaces. Instead of their belongings being stored away in boxes, the men in the family can actually interact with and enjoy them in an organized layout. “Men tend to not have a lot of areas of the home that reflect their personalities and their identity,” Mindy says. “It gives them their own space, whether they are sportsmen and need to be able to organize that kind of stuff, or if they like to tinker on cars or even want to display their hubcap collections, they can do that. They can put in a Kegerator and have the guys over to watch a ball game.” 40
