BRENTWOOD'S PRESCRIPTION DRUG DROP BOX Prescription drugs save lives. If they are misused, however, they can also destroy them. Therefore, proper disposal of unused prescription medicine is not just the right thing to do, it’s a civic duty. Fortunately, here in Brentwood, that duty is now made much easier with the City Hall Drug Drop Box, located at 5211 Maryland Way. It’s a safe and convenient way to get rid of prescription medicines. Set up in January 2018, the drop box collected 954 pounds of prescription drugs last year alone, an average of nearly 80 pounds of drugs a month that can no longer find their way into the wrong hands or, via landfills, into our water supply. FEBRUARY, OF COURSE, BRINGS THOUGHTS OF VALENTINE’S DAY, THE MOST ROMANTIC OF HOLIDAYS. Or at least it should be. The reality, as we all know—the kids, the bills, the dog vs. cat, the kitchen that never seems clean—sometimes intrudes upon a couple’s best-laid plans for wine-and-dine romance. So what better way to ensure that a romantic evening unfolds according to plan than by entrusting reality to grandma or a sitter for a night or two and then making a couple’s getaway? You need not go far; the Childress-Ray House in historic downtown Murfreesboro is one such romantic Valentine’s destination. A newly renovated and beautifully furnished home on the National Register of Historic Places, the Childress-Ray House is located just off the main square with its shops, restaurants and pubs. Built in 1847, the house’s thick plaster walls provide plenty of privacy while its wrought-iron fence ensures security. The enclosed grounds include a beautiful garden, a charming veranda, an extant root cellar and an original stable. The home contains the main house and three adjoining apartments that were added in the 1940s. 20

The home also contains most of its original hardwood floors, moldings, fireplaces and light fixtures. Sandi Baylis purchased and updated the property in 2014 and made it into the charming B&B it is today. All three apartments are available during the month of February and are cozy and quaint. In the upstairs Magnolia Suite, snuggle up with your significant other on the comfy sofa or the antique canopy bed. You may also choose from the cozy Gardener Suite or the downstairs Coy Dunson Suite, the biggest of the three apartments. During your stay, stroll the grounds and check out the original 1800s kitchen and fireplace, potters shed and the two front porches. Or gather 'round the fire pit on the lightstrung back patio with a hot toddy. The parlor in the main house is accessible to all guests and is an ideal space to have a chat or just settle in beside the wood-burning fire with a good book. GREAT PROGRESS HAS BEEN MADE IN THE FIGHT AGAINST CANCER, YET THE DISEASE REMAINS A FORMIDABLE FOE. Fortunately, many wonderful institutions in town are seeking cures and aiding patients. But it’s expensive. That’s where Nashville Wine Auction comes in. As the country’s longest-running charity wine auction, the organization has raised tens of millions of dollars over the years for local cancer-fighting nonprofits such as St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital and the Vanderbilt-Ingram Cancer Center. "In 2018, we provided funds to purchase a 3D mammography machine for St. Thomas West. It will serve thousands and thousands of women in our community," says Holly Whaley, Nashville Wine Auction’s president and CEO. But that was only part of the $1.8 million Nashville Wine Auction raised last year. Another beneficiary last year included the Make-A-Wish Foundation, philanthropy made possible through the appreciation of great times with extraordinary wines. But let’s face it, not everyone is a sommelier, and high-end wines can be intimidating, what with all their complexities and layered notes and pedigree of grapes. Hence the rationale behind Pairings: Nashville’s Ultimate Wine and Food Weekend. You need not be an expert to enjoy yourself; you need merely be an enthusiast, one who is eager to explore the experiences afforded by some of the world’s most remarkable wines. “If you are at all interested in wine, then our events are going to thrill you,” Holly says. As well as, of course, raise significant funds. Since the vintners donate the wine and the chefs their expertise, about 60 to 70 percent of each ticket sold goes to battle against cancer. The first of the three evenings of events kicks off on Thursday, Feb. 21 with Private Vintner Dinners. These are intimate affairs with gourmet meals prepared by local chefs in private homes and select restaurants, allowing participants to converse with the winemakers themselves at the table. Friday evening is Wined Up! Here, 26 vintners from the West Coast provide samples of their wines at the City Winery while participants enjoy delectable cuisine from guest chefs and bid in a silent auction. Saturday evening is the Pairings Dinner. Again at the City Winery, participants savor a five-course meal prepared by featured chefs and paired with fantastic wines from esteemed vintners, all while raising their paddles to bid on donated wine during a spirited live auction. 2009 was not a good real estate market and we wanted to purchase a home with a basement. Mid 2009 I had an idea that if real estate was down, then builders were not selling homes. My idea was to find a builder to trade my home for their home and I would pay the agreed difference. I did not know Gabrielle at that time and spoke to another realtor that had over 30 years of experience about my idea. Her exact words were “I cannot do that and you will never find a realtor who would actually be able to do that—and if you did, they would be the greatest real estate agent ever.” Reading between the lines, she basically told me I was crazy. December of the same year I met Gabrielle at a Christmas get-together she was hosting at our playground. We spoke for ten minutes, but I never told her of my idea. I could tell from the brief conversation that she was not the normal realtor just in it for the commission. I called her the same day a few hours later and told her of my idea. She listened, asked me a few questions and said, “Let me work on it and I will let you know.” Within one week she called me and said, “I have found builders willing to trade.” When I started working the numbers, Gabrielle stated, “Look over the numbers and if anything makes you feel uncomfortable, I will address it with the builder. If you are still uncomfortable with the answer, do not go through with the sale.” At that point, it proved what I already knew—that she truly cares about her making her clients happy. March 10, 2010 we had a new home that we traded for and the agreed difference to pay. Gabrielle was there for us from start to finish; and even after we closed, to this day I have and still contact her with questions. She is still there for me and responds promptly even though we’re currently not in the market to buy and sell. To pull off what Gabrielle did makes me and the realtor I spoke to know without a doubt that Gabrielle is the greatest real estate agent ever.
