Three new schools are open for the 2018-2019 school year: Jordan Elementary in Brentwood and Thompson’s Station Elementary and Thompson’s Station Middle schools. The district’s graduating class of 2017 posted an ACT composite score of 25.2, the highest in the history of the district. DOGS. Why do we love them so much? Is it because a house is never lonely where a loving dog waits, or that some angels choose fur instead of wings? So where to take your loving, patient, tail-wagging angel for some fun and frolic? Why, a dog park, of course! A safe, fenced-in place where your fluffy Fifi might meet her faithful Fido, or where your exuberant Rex can run and romp around with a revved-up Rover. Your fuzzy, four-legged friend will have a blast and—who knows—you just might make a new friend of the two-legged variety as well. Here are four nearby places nearby we think are true dog treats.

EDWIN WARNER DOG PARK Old Hickory Boulevard and Vaughn Road, Nashville, Tennessee
The big draw is the park’s size and its prime location. Edwin Warner Park is a beautiful place to be, and it’s a straight shot from Brentwood down Old Hickory. The large enclosure allows larger dogs to have a field day. However, there is no separate enclosure for smaller dogs. Also, make sure to wear old shoes as there is no paved area for people.

Located in Tower Park near the Concord exit off Interstate 65,
the traffic noise is muffled by the wall of trees and bushes. The Mars Petcare Company sponsors this dog park, ensuring that it’s a clean, safe place for dogs to run and play. The area for larger dogs is about 1.5 acres, and smaller dogs have just over half an acre of puppy playground.

Tucked away beside the humane shelter, this park is a little hidden, but it is very well kept and has agility equipment. There is a separate area for smaller or elderly dogs. There is also great shade, a water source inside the park and benches for the dogs’ best friends.

Who says you can’t teach an old dog a new tree? While not a dog park—all furry friends must remain on a leash—the Deer Arboretum is a great place to take your dog for a walk around the paved path and maybe even a quick dip in the Little Harpeth River. There is also a cool Tree Identification Trail Guide you can use to identify the park’s trees while your pooch perhaps uses the trees for his or her own puppy purposes.

“AN ANIMAL’S EYES,” PHILOSOPHER AND THEOLOGIAN MARTIN BUBER ONCE OBSERVED, “HAVE THE POWER TO SPEAK A GREAT LANGUAGE.” A trenchant insight and certainly one germane to our darling dogs, those wonderful waggle-butts who possess some of the most eloquent eyes of the animal kingdom. But who is to translate fluent dog eyes into standard English? Fortunately, there are a couple of experts in town conversant in pooch patois. We asked them to tell us what our furry friends are saying.

sugar + nancy Nancy Black, a realtor with Berkshire Hathaway Home Services, understands dogs. She has to. With more than 30 years’ experience in the business, she has seen much more dog-centered home buying in the past few years.
“Clients will make decisions on how easily an older dog can access the steps to the backyard,” she says. “Or millennials are not having kids. Instead, they want enough yard for their dogs. Having had dogs most of my life has given me a perspective and awareness of the importance that a pet can make in a buyer or seller’s life! They are an integral part of the family, and I give that high priority.” To help her understand the pooches’ point-of-view, Nancy has her own dog, Sugar, a 2-year-old Cavalier King Charles Spaniel. With Nancy translating, we asked Sugar a few questions.

SUGAR IS A PRETTY NAME, BUT DOES NANCY HAVE A NICKNAME FOR YOU? She calls me Miss Lickey-Loo because I like to lick her face. It’s my way of showing affection. WHAT ARE THE THREE FAVORITE COMMANDS THAT YOU LIKE TO GIVE TO NANCY, SUGAR? The first one I like is “wash my face!” It’s our evening ritual, and I really love it. My person has also been trained to know what “rub my tummy” means. It puts me to sleep with all four paws in the air. Finally, there’s “sit down with me while I eat.” I don’t like to eat unless my person sits beside me. I might be a bit high-maintenance, but I give out so much love and affection! WHAT IS YOUR FAVORITE ACTIVITY WITH NANCY, SUGAR? Oh, that’s easy: cuddle time! We Cavaliers are called “comfort dogs” because we’re quiet and gentle and calming. I’m the perfect furry friend for my person when she comes home from a hectic day in real estate! 22

Care of Tennessee, and he and his wife, Lisa, have opened a family pharmacy in Nolensville.
When their beloved dog of 14 years succumbed to cancer, Tim and Lisa found it challenging to agree on a new furry friend—so they got two. Meet Bella and Nash, the former a “Bichpoo,” (Toy Poodle meets Bichon Frise), and the latter just rocking the whole Bichon Frise thing. Both were happy to speak about their loving forever home, but Bella did most of the talking since she’s a bit older. HOW OLD ARE YOU, BELLA? I’m 19 months, and Nash is 17 months. We both joined the Albonetti family when we were 8 weeks old. DO TIM AND LISA HAVE ANY NICKNAMES FOR YOU? They call me “mean girl,” but that’s only because I like to play fight. I yap at my people when they stop! I guess I’m a bit of a diva. WHAT DO YOU AND NASH LIKE TO SAY TO YOUR PEOPLE? FIRST THE BAD NEWS. The Boxers and Brews event—adorable, adoptable boxers along with delicious, artisan-crafted beer—at Craft Brewed is over. It was held June 9 this year with a crowd of about 70 folks and some dozen dogs attending. The good news, however, is that this is an annual event, so mark those calendars for 2019! Boxers and Brews helps support a Brentwood-based nonprofit, Middle Tennessee Boxer Rescue. Since 1990, this 100 percent volunteer organization has dedicated itself to rescuing abused or abandoned box-

Monster Pudding INGREDIENTS + 1 bunch fresh spinach + 1 bunch parsley + 1 avocado + 4-6 ounces full-fat fat coconut milk (canned works best) + 1/2-1 cup coconut water + 2 teaspoons cocoa powder + 1 teaspoon cinnamon + 1/2 teaspoon sea salt + 1 tablespoon coconut oil + 1 scoop high-quality, naturally sweetened chocolate protein powder + Liquid stevia drops + Mini chocolate chips or cacao nibs for toppings (optional) DIRECTIONS Mix first 10 ingredients in high-speed blender. Blend on high, stopping to scrape sides of the blender with spatula. Taste. Add stevia drops to sweeten to preference. Top with mini chocolate chips or cacao nibs for a healthier option.
