And, since it's located in the Hamilton Creek Recreation Area, a public park, friends who don’t wish to paddleboard (their loss) may still dip in the water while you look down and say, “kiss my splash!”

ROCK ISLAND PADDLE RAMPAGE Put your newfound paddleboarding skills to the test with a summer road trip to Center Hill Lake. Since the course comes right up to the dam, it flows more like a river than a lake, so make sure to bring some extra oomph! There’s a 4-mile course and a 14-mile course from which to choose and, since it’s a HardWin Adventure, expect live music and lots of great beer and delicious food. Camping is available too!

Begin with the beer. The Brentwood Corner Pub has 32 taps featuring such locally crafted favorites as Black Abbey’s The Rose, a Belgianstyle blond ale, and Jackalope’s Bearwalker, an American brown ale. Also available are more exotic flavors from farther afield such as Kentucky Bourbon Barrel Ale, a high-gravity—8.2 percent—brew out of Lexington.

But men shall not live by fermented barley alone; order something to eat. Managing Partner Yogi Davis has some suggestions. “The wings are a thing a beauty,” he says. “We make our own cayenne pepper-based sauce.” Or try the Hot Chicken Chunks, boneless white meat marinated overnight with an in-house, spicy dry rub. Not feeling chicken? Then get the burgers! “They’re huge,” Yogi says. “They’re a halfpound of fresh meat cooked to temp, which is not something many people do.”

With 27 TVs, there’s no such thing as a bad seat for watching the big game—or games. “During football season, there are Sundays when every single game is being shown,” Yogi says. FRIED CHICKEN SANDWICH WITH JALAPEÑO SLAW INGREDIENTS (SANDWICH) 1 cup all-purpose flour 1/2 teaspoon ground paprika 1/2 teaspoon garlic powder Cayenne pepper, to taste Boneless, skinless chicken breasts Vegetable oil (as needed) Sesame seed bun Pickles

DIRECTIONS 1. Mix the flour, paprika, garlic powder and cayenne pepper together in a shallow bowl. 2. Fill your skillet with oil to about 1-inch deep and heat to 350 degrees. 3. Coat your chicken breasts in the flour and seasoning mixture, then carefully place them into the heated oil. 4. Cook until golden brown with an internal temperature of 165 degrees. 5. Lightly toast your sesame seed bun, then top with pickles, fried chicken breast and slaw to taste.

FOR THE SLAW Combine mayo, hot sauce, garlic and dill pickle juice with shredded red cabbage, pickled onions and candied jalapeños.

CARNE ASADA STREET TACOS WITH AVOCADO RELISH INGREDIENTS (TACOS)

1/2 red onion, coarsely chopped 3 cloves garlic, peeled 2 tablespoons adobo sauce

MARINATE THE STEAK IN THE REFRIGERATOR FOR UP TO 24 HOURS FOR EXTRA FLAVOR.

2 tablespoons olive oil 2 teaspoons cumin 2 teaspoons dried oregano Salt and pepper, to taste Choice of steak Fresh flour or corn tortillas Lime, optional

DIRECTIONS 1. Blend the red onion, garlic, adobo sauce, olive oil and seasoning in a food processor or blender, adding water as needed until smooth. 2. Marinate the steak in the mixture for at least 30 minutes prior to grilling. 3. Heat 2 tablespoons of oil in a large grill pan and add the steak, cooking to desired doneness. Let rest in a foil tent for 10 minutes then chop into small pieces and assemble tacos as desired.

FOR THE RELISH Chop and combine avocado, fresh jalapeño, cilantro, onion, lime juice and salt to taste. Top with queso fresco and pepitas as desired. Steak marinade from CulinaryHill.com
